Panasonic DV2500 for tape capture and tape output

Although I use all P2 now, I still need to capture mini-dv tapes via the Panasonic DV2500. The new set up (see below) will not work...any suggestions? Final Cut pro 7.0.2
Thanks in advance!

I tried that and changed scratch track to desktop and still no go.
I have an older "cheese grater" which I may just hang onto for capture via the DV2500. I need a newer system and was going to get the imac quad i7 but this makes me nervous...

  • Recommended Workflow for eventual 1080p and 1080i output?

We have a show shooting on HVX-200's (at 720p60, 23.98), and also some HDV footage.
We are editing with FCP 6.0.2 on MacPros, with San Server, and Blackmagic Decklink HD Extreme cards.
We must deliver to two networks:
    1) 1080p 23.98
    2) 1080i 29.97
    (both on HDCam tape)
    Shooting/editing hasn't yet begun.
    What is our best workflow?
--Should we edit on a 23.98 or 29.97 timebase (I presume we'll need two final sequences for layoff, one at 23.98 and one at 29.97, since one is DF and the other is NDF)?
--To layoff the 1080 masters, should we create 1080 sequences and render; or can the Decklink card upconvert upon edit-to-tape? [I've already tested converting the footage to 1080 with Media Manager, and the computer can barely handle playing it]
--When mixing HD and HDV footage in a timeline, what's the solution for minimal rendering and normal-looking frame-rates?
--Will we need a Tri-Sync generator to Edit-To-Tape at 23.98 via the Decklink card? Or any other hardware we should start acquiring?
    --Other issues we should expect?
Any suggestions would be GREATLY appreciated from those who have been through this before.
    Many thanks!

I have tons of experience with this workflow...and I blog about most of it. Here is a post that will enlighten you on a few things:

  • Creating InDesign files for both print and mobile output?

I am looking for a way to create files that can be multi-purpose for both print and mobile/online environments. I would like the output to be 2 different PDFs from one set of Indesign files. The problem I am encountering is that currently my files are full of hi-res and vector graphics, effects, and are generally created to be optimized for large-scale printings on offset or digital presses. I am trying to use the same files to generate files that are optimized for mobile and online presentation but finding that the number of vector graphics specifically is slowing page display down.
My initial reaction is that the solution would have to be dual-development. Multiple forms of 'master graphics' would have to be created and placed on multiple layers (one for print and one for mobile/online).
Hi-res files could be made lo-res in Acrobat or Pitstop, but vector imagery would have to be rasterized and I am not aware of a method to do that in either of those programs.
I have found some info on adobe.com leading me to think that maybe CS6 addresses some of this, but the majority of my work is being done in CS4 with only the bleeding edge being done in CS5.
Thanks in advance for any insight.

the output to be 2 different PDFs from one set of Indesign files.
You can accomplish this by saving each PDF using a different preset - High Quality Print for the high res, smallest file size for web
but vector imagery would have to be rasterized...
You should be trying to keep all vector work as vectors. This, in most cases, lowers the file size. There are a couple of exceptions to that like if the vectors are very complex (layered etc) and you are using bitmap effects like drop shadows. In general, rasterizing will increase the file size and lower the quality.
Is there any functional difference between the 2 PDFs? I am wondering why exporting using 2 different presets will not do the job efficiently enough. You could always save your linked images with a low res version - same file but make a copy 100dpi instead of 300dpi. This might help but InD normally downsamples the images anyway when exporting as smallest file size.
EDIT:// In Acrobat, you can save as "Reduced Size PDF" which strips out all the meta data etc and makes the PDF lighter and faster for web use. This would be a final, before publishing online step.

  • 4K capture and 1080p output

I am interested in using one of the new high resolution cameras to capture scientific tests (rocket motor static tests). I have an eye on red.com which is a 4+K capture at a typical framerate or 2K at 120fps, which excites me.
Two main issues. What is the data stored on and what interface must be used? The mentioned camera has dual-link but aparantly not optical. I am thinking it has to be a solid state disc or a multi-channel RAID.
And, how can it be edited? Will FCP even import it and let me crop and save it to 1080p?
Thanks for putting up with such questions. I am ONLY a rocket scientist!
    Jerry
    MacBookPro C2D   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

My understanding RED in particular is going to offer a solid state drive (up to 160GB) which is mounted on the camera. Okay. At about 7.5GB/sec, that is a pretty short capture segment.
In reading the specs of Apple's fibre channel the throughput is only about 480mb/s and that is with dual 2GB links. I guess there is some link handshake or inefficiencies or perhaps disc bottlenecks.
IBM in June announced a $20k RAID system with dual e-sata that only does about 4GB/s and they say it is the fastest thing as of then. No benchmarks to show actual performance. It might only be 480mb/s too.
So, since 4K is some sort of video standard now, albiet a particularly demanding one, there must be a way to simply capture it.
This may be one of those situations where the camera has dropped in price from $120k to $20k but the storage technology is still not up to par. And remember, we are only talking about ONE camera here.

  • I would like to use a virtual machine as a refernce computer during capture and depoly

    Hello all
I can't seem to find a good step by step on using a virtual machine as a refernce computer for the capture and depoly part of OSD. Does anyone have a link that has helped them?
    Thanks,
    Phil

It is pretty straight forward, same way you would do a B&C on a physical. Only added benefit is you don't have a bunch of garbage drivers preloaded into the OS.
I can give you a high level type of approach:
Create your B&C task sequence inside of SCCM
Advertise to your unknown computers collection
Using your Virtualization software, provision your VM with standard hardware. Nothing special
PXE boot your VM into the SCCM OSD
Choose your advertised B&C task sequence
Once complete, add your newly captured WIM to the Operating System Images node in SCCM
    Create a Deploy Task Sequence
Advertise that to your unknown computer collection
PXE boot one of your physical boxes and test the new task sequence to ensure the new image works/looks properly
Please note: Step 9 may take some additional configuration of boot drivers in order to work depending on your hardware you are trying to deploy to
It's hard to get any more in depth on a walkthrough with that process unless you wanted to start getting hardware/software specific. If you have questions along the way about specifics we can always help with that as well

  • Image Capture and Samsung All-in-One SCX4825FN Preview Delay

I am trying to scan using a Samsung SCX4825FN all-in-one printer, scanner and fax machine. It is installed using an ethernet cable via my internal network. Two Macs see and scan with it without a problem. The third used to, but since I tried installing Samsung's own scan software (just to see if there were any OCR capability in it, which there wasn't), each time I try to open up the flatbed scanning, it takes hours (literally) to do the preview scan, and in the meantime, the computer is almost unusable. The printer (scanner) appears to correctly do the preview scan, then do a more detailed scan (at very high resolution?), which takes it ages, and it uses this to build the preview scan.
Other computers haven't changed, so I assume it is the since Mac that needs fixing. It also doesn't happen with the multi-sheet feeder scan on any of the computers, so it is only the flat-bed scan that causes the problem.
I have tried fixing permissions, removing the Samsung software completely (I then couldn't see the scanner at all) then reinstalling the minimal amount, deleting permissions for Image Capture and for the Samsung Scanning software, changing preferences within the Samsung software, but all to no avail. It still takes a couple of hours to complete the initial preview scan on the one computer but not the others. Has anyone got any other ideas?
I would like to delete the Samsung software off the problem Mac and then copy over the required drivers from another computer to let it scan without a problem using the standard Snow Leopard install, but I am not sure which files to copy over. I am worried that the (not very good) Samsung installation software is taking off more files than it is supposed to when I remove it, but I am not sure what it is supposed to leave on there, or perhaps it is leaving too much on there.
The nice installation software from Samsung forces a restart each time you try and do anything, as well as insisting that no other software is running while it is trying to make changes, so I am already a little unhappy about what kind of changes it is trying to make since most Apple software is not that crazy...

Interestingly here is what I received from Brother. (Note that scanning using the Control Center works fine.):
    Dear Brother Customer,
Thank you for taking the time to write to us.
Is your machine able to scan using the Brother ControlCenter software?
If you are able to scan with the ControlCenter, the drivers are
    installed and working properly.
Your issue is with Apple's Image Capture software and should be referred
    to them for support.
When you open the Apple software, you will need to click DEVICES in the
Menu Bar, then select the disclosure triangle next to TWAIN devices to
    reveal the Brother TWAIN device.
Select the Brother TWAIN and click OK.
You should now be able to scan with Apple's Image Capture application.
For any additional assistance with the Apple application, we suggest you
    contact Apple for assistance.
We hope this information will be useful to you. If we can be of further
    assistance, please let us know.

So, who owns the problem: Brother or Apple? If I go to the Apple Store I see Canon and HP scannners for sale but not Brother. Maybe that is part of the problem. Corporate relations between Brother and Apple.

  • "Lacie Rugged" for hdv capture?

Is the 160gb 5400 rpm buss powered drive good enough for basic hdv capture and editing?

I'm not a big fan of the larger 3.5" drive based Lacie units, as Shane already pointed out, they have a very poor record for reliabilty ....
... the "Rugged" however, one of their smaller 2.5" format drives, is an excellent little drive, very robust and in my own experience its very reliable. It will be more than adequate for HDV capture and editing.
Note: if you are not travelling regularly and do not need the added peace of mind of the big rubber bumper then there is little point in spending the extra money on this one, there are plenty of alternative drives that are equally reliable AND that have 7200rpm drives inside for that extra oomph when you want it.

  • Purchasing organization and PO output

    Hi,
I have implemented the PPOMA the following way :
    Porg
    Pgroup
    Company code
    Plant
    Storage location
    users
I received warning message saying that Porg should be at the same level or under the company code.
I didn't care about the warning message in the PPOMA and the purchasing flow (extended classic scenario) is working fine EXCEPT for PO preview and PO output.
At this step, the system is reading the Porg and try to determine the internal company address : for srm this is the "contact address".
Becasue my Porg is above the company code, the system doesn't find anything and issue error message "cannot determine contact address". Thus no preview, neither print can be done.
I want to keep my PPOMA structure.
Do you know what i have exactly to do to print the PO ?
    Kind regards,
    Yann

  • Begins capture and then stops (says problem with tape)

When I try to capture (whether it is with Clip or Now) the capture begins for three seconds and then stops citing a problem with the data. The menu suggests that there may be a problem with the DV tape. (I can preview with no problem). I've tried many tapes and all have the same result leading me to think there's something up with the program.
I haven't specified any system preferences other than what is suggested for default. The program recognizes and controls my device with no problem. I just can't capture. What should I do?

  • HD - best capture and edit for NTSC Sd output?

I shoot in HD but need to output for community TV channel in Standard NTSC. What shoud my capture and sequence settings be for optimum picture quality for playback?

    Two suggestions.
When I did shows on the local community tv, they had pretty rigid specs I needed to conform to. So check with whomever you are producing for, the station will give you what they need.
For my local community tv, it was 29.97 frame rate bitrate 6000-8000 720x480 mpeg2. Audio was 2 ch stereo bit rate of either 192 or 256, 44.1 or 48 khz.
So I would export in prores and use something like Compressor to change.

  • WILL FCP 7 Recognize older camcorders like Panasonic PVGS120 for capturing?

I wanted to find out if FCP 7 has the ability to read all older camera models. If I can upgrade to FCP 7 (for under $300) and my old camera (Panasonic PVGS120) can be recognized by FCP software/drivers then I will not need to go out and buy a new HD camera just yet. Can anyone confirm this? The Panasonic PVGS120 was a gift and did not come with a driver for mac only PC/Windows. Right now I can not capture my footage onto my mac via fire wire & camera. I have to transfer my tapes to a friends HD camera to be able to import and capture my footage. If not I'll just have to break down and get a new HD camera for footage and importing, either way it's a win-win. PLEASE HELP!!

I own this camera, I just did a test and it works fine with the newest FCS.
All should be well for you!

  • Best Capture and Sequence settings for project ending up as digital file

    Hi. Looking for capture/setting advice.
I am used to working in broadcast NTSC 10-bit uncompressed video, but I now have a project which needs to end up as MPEG-1 files. The tapes I have were recorded NTSC 4:3. Should I capture the footage in DV instead of Uncompressed 10-bit, and set my sequence frame size as DV? Will this avoid the reshaping of the image when I output to an MPEG1, or will I lose quality?
    Thanks for the knowledge.

The tapes were recorded on DVCAM 4:3, but we have an
    analogue capture board (AJA IO).
Then for best quality you should be capturing via FireWire as DV (its native format) and then editing in an uncompressed sequence.
This issue came up after I had captured and edited in
the 10-bit uncompressed (space is not an issue), then
was called upon to export stills of the footage,
which, of course, came out in the 720 x 486 format,
much to the consternation of the person who had to
use the stills. This person didn't understand how
the MPEG1 files could come out square, but the stills
came out in 720 x486. So it made me wonder whether I
shoudn't be editing in DV or some other "square"
    format to begin with.
DV (DVCam) isn't a square pixel format. It's the same as what you've got except it's missing a measly six usually-blank lines at the top. You just have to make sure it doesn't get stretched into the 486 lines.
For your graphics person: all they have to do is stretch them to 10% narrower or 11% taller when they place them. That's all.
