Panasonic DVD Recorders

I'm looking into options for creating video for my PSP. I have 2 main options, a TV Tuner for the Mac, or buy a "home" DVD recorder and convert those files. I would want the Panasonic machine that writes to DVD-RAM, DVD-R and DVD-RW. I know DVD-RAM is not an option on the Mac, but does anyone know if I would be able to do anything with the recordings on DVD-R or DVD-RW on the Mac and convert them to MP4?
Cheers
Matt

I use VR mode DVD-R discs from my Pioneer standalone recorder. You need Toast 7 to be able to extract the video from those discs. Otherwise you can only extract video from finalized video-mode DVDs recorded on the Panasonic.
As for DVD-RAM, Toast 7 reports that the Matshita UJ-846 Superdrive in my iMac (iSight) will read DVD-RAM and Toast 7 will extract MPEGs from DVD-RAM media. I don't know for sure because I have nothing that writes to DVD-RAM media.
Another application that will extract the video from those discs is Pixe VRF Browser. However, Toast 7 works better and is a far better value.

  • First Play Menu doesn't work properly on DVD Recorders

    I am an experienced PC Encore user. Just finished authoring a DVD with Encore CS3. Test results on Toshiba and Liteon DVD recorders yield a failed first play response (no menu appears). Test results on Sony set top players and computer DVD players, first play responds correctly (menu appears instantly).
    I have created and tested DVDs on the same DVD recorders with earlier versions of encore and never had failed first play results.
    Further, if I press the DVD Menu on the remote, the menu appears.
    I discovered a work-around. I duplicated the DVD in a duplicator, tested the duplicate in the recorders and it worked properly. It must have stripped the header information from the master.
    This is a problem with Encore CS3 and needs to be addressed. Many people use their DVD recorder as players, which is one of the reasons we use recorders to test.
    Response . . .

    AS opposed to lyonseye I am a plain novice on Encore - always dependent on templates. Now , I've just recently finished my first proper encore-project. Simple enough - one single menu linking to three timelines and wow my own pictures as static background! Checked and built (+R single layer) without any hickups in the error-report-department.
    The disk plays perfect in various set top dvd's
    but not on my own recorder(s)!!! ( 3 different machines tested with various players).
    I won't go into machinery details (harm :-)) but would be happy if someone could explain to me if this is a common problem or eventually could point to the most usual reason for this unexpected behaviour.
    Another question: the manual states that it is possible to apply motion background to the entire menu. I've tried this , linking video to buttons are easy enough as is linking sound to the menu. But pickwhipping ( did I spell that correct ,wonder) video to the background is a different animal.Short takes of approx 1 min duration was ment looping until buttons beeing pressed. Not working for me , maybe others could tell me the secret?
    Again :

  • Connecting iMac to Panasonic DVD Recorder

    I need to connect my new iMac to my Panasonic DVD Recorder, which only has 3-RCA input. I tried it via connecting the iMac to my HDVT and then from the TV to the DVD Recorder , but that did not work. Is there a way to connect the iMac to the DVD Recorder? With my Windows Notebook it's no problem at all. I want to record movies from a German TV Station, that streams via FlashVideo.

    I assume you are trying to send the signal from iMac to DVD recorder, not the other way, although it is not entirely clear.
    The Mini DisplayPort does not provide a signal for composite output. Therefore, there is no simple adapter that will output to an RCA connection.
    Maybe you can find a way to capture the stream directly and bypass the need for the DVD recorder.

  • Panasonic DVD camcorder to Mac

    A friend asked the following question of me, which I cannot answer. Maybe someone here can:
    I'm a relatively new Mac user and have had a Panasonic DVD Video Camera (VDR-M50) for a few years. I'd like to begin to use my Panasonic on my Mac for video and pic editing and can't get the camera to talk to my laptop. I was given this Mac. It's a PowerBook G4 OS X. Any tips?
    Right now, I don't have other details.

    A DVD video camera is built for recording and playing on the TV without editing. The video is highly compressed in a format (MPEG-2) that is not intended for editing.
    Now, if your Mac has a tray-loading DVD drive (not slot-loading), you can rip a FINALIZED DVD for editing in iMovie. But it requires time and quite a bit of hands-on for each disc.

  • 16:9 DVD created in iDVD plays cropped on Panasonic DVD player

    I created a DVD from a 16:9 QuickTime movie using iDVD 7. Everything works fine when I play the video on a computer (Mac or PC), but when I play it on my DVD player (a recent Panasonic that plays all commercial 4:3 and 16:9 DVDs perfectly) it plays the video cropped to 4:3. In other words it completely loses the left and right edges.
    I have a 16:9 LCD TV so I verified that the settings on the TV were fine and they were. I am certain that the image that the TV receives is already a 4:3 image, it isn't cropped by the TV.
    I tried to change the settings on the DVD player manually to see if it was a problem with the player (although I doubted that to start with as I had no problems with commercial DVDs ever). It didn't matter if the DVD player was manually set to 4:3, 16:9 or Auto, all I could get was differently resized versions of the 4:3 cropped video. It appears that for the DVD player, the extra information outside the 4:3 box doesn't exist, it will only play the 4:3 part of the 16:9 video.
    Does anybody know why this happens and how to fix it?
    Thanks, this is driving me nuts as I've already rendered and rebuilt and re-rendered this project twice and I need to get this DVD to my friend before he moves.
    Andrew.

    I think I figured it out.
    Download myDVDedit from http://www.mydvdedit.com/index.php?pg=downloads
    From iDVD save the VIDEO_TS folder (or copy it from your disc/disk image) to your computer.
    Open the VIDEO_TS folder in myDVDedit
    Use myDVDedit and change all of the VTS files to use an 16:9 auto Letterbox aspect ratio in the IFO section
    Save VIDEO_TS from myDVDedit
    Load up Toast and burn a new DVD from your VIDEO_TS folder.
    I'll test this at home and let you know if it worked on my DVD player.
    Cheers, Andrew.

    So, is there a list somewhere I can find? Or does anyone have any suggestions about quality drives to purchase?
    Thanks.

    Or does anyone have any suggestions about quality drives to purchase?
    I've been happy with LaCie.

  • MacBook Pro Won't Read a DVD+R (RW) Created on a Panasonic DVD Recorder

    Hi,
    I recently used a DVD Recorder to transfer VHS tapes to DVDs. The disks (DVD+R RW) read fine on the video recorder and other dvd playback units, but won't open on my MacBook Pro. I keep getting the screen that asks me to format. Is this a problem with my MacBook? I'd like to edit these DVDs. Can I do that?
    Thanks,
    Chris

    One other slight possibility is that the drive in the problem MBP is a different brand to the one in the "good" one, and for some reason doesn't like that particular brand of media (they all have slightly different reflective properties etc). You can check in System Profiler to find out what sorts of drives are fitted in each.
    But a bit of dust or film on the lens is the most common cause of optical drive problems, so a cleaning disc is certainly worth trying. I actually run one in my own computers every month or so. Seems to keep them running for years while others have issues after months!

  • IDVD 4.01 and DVD recorders (DVD-RWs)

    I am considering buying a DVD recorder to replace my VCR. Does iDVD 4.01 have the capability of ripping and editing DVD-RWs, and then burning permanently to a new DVD-R for my personal library?
    Any feedback is appreciated. I haven't bought a recorder yet so any brand suggestions are welcome too.
    Thanks!

    Hi Trayce:
    Does iDVD 4.01 have the capability of ripping and editing DVD-RWs, and then burning permanently to a new DVD-R for my personal library?
    No- iDVD 4 can only burn DVD-R and (as if that weren't enough) iDVD 4 can't send your movie to anexternal burner without a hack. That hack can be downloaded here:

    Maybe you should purchase iLife 5 or iLife 6 as they both have that built right in.
    Hope that helps! Sue

  • Can DVD recorders connect?

    My iBook (dual USB) has only a CD drive. A friend suggests it might be possible to use a DVD recorder as an external DVD drive. His 80GB unit has both A and B USB ports and he can connect his digital camera and his video recorder; why not an iBook? Anyone tried it?

    "My problem is that I've now got Tiger on a DVD and trying to figure out how to install it on the iBook without a DVD drive. I think I'll have to resort to Apple Rescue for CDs. "
    You are correct. It is not possible to use a television-type DVD recorder to install Mac OS X.
    You can however install Tiger via Target Disk Mode if your friend has a Mac with a firewire port and a DVD drive, and you hook it up to your iBook.

  • Does DVD Studio Pro 3 handle dual layer DVD recorders?

    If not is it possible just to output the project as a build and use toast 7 to write to a dual layer machine?

    dual G5 Mac OS X (10.4.6)

    I don't believe it will handle burns directly from within DVDSP to a DL burner/disc. You definitely can output a project hard drive and use toast. If you output your project and don't set a layer break, Toast will pick the appropriate spot for you. If you set the layer break yourself, Toast will honor it (if it is on media but not media) if it is in the appropriate locatioin. If you output to an image file and burn the image file, you need to set the layer break yourself AND make sure it is in the correct position since Toast will not be able to change it. If you mount the image file first and burn the project with Toast after that, then Toast can adjust the layer break if it needs to. You would build your project first to your hard drive and make sure there aren't any problems or errors with the build. You would then format your build to your hard drive as an image file, make sure you select the appropriate sized media, and select a layer break that is appropriate. If your image file formats and compiles without a hitch, you should be good to go.

  • Do iMac (Intel) play blu-ray discs?

    before I back-up stuff from my DVD recorder onto blu-ray discs, will they play on my new iMac (Intel) ?
    Also, given the comparative lack of availability of blank blu-ray discs, does this mean people are favouring other means to back up material they wish to archive on their DVD recorders; and if so, can someone recommend them (specifically for Panasonic DVD recorders) ?

    Apple does not make an Apple-branded BluRay player, but just about any USB BluRay Player will work on a Mac. It will plug and play. All drivers are already included with Mac OS/X.
    Apple's DVD Player software does not work with BluRay, so you will need a third party app to use as a player.
    Here is a good article from MacWorld which covers some good options.

  • Can't import from DVD-R or DVD Ram media from Panasonic Camcorder

    I recently bought a Panasonic DVD VDR-D300 camcorder. The device accepts DVD RAM, DVD -R and DVD -RW media. The camera comes bundled with software from Pixela Corp. that allows me to download media to my hard drive (I am using a 1.33 ghz G4 Powerbook with a 60 GB HD, running OS 10.4.5). The Panasonic camera uses MPEG-2 compression. The hook-up from the camera to my powerbook is USB (no firewire supplied). When the camera is hooked up to the Mac, Apple DVD player opens and controls the camera -playback, eject, fast-forward of the media in the camera, no problem. When I want to import the footage into iMovie to edit, the files are not recognized. Doesn't matter if its DVD RAM, DVD -R or DVD -RW media - iMovie can't import it.
    I really like the camera - it's got 3 ccd's and looks better than other camcorders in its class. We've got an 11 month old and the main reason we bought the camera was to make movies on iMovie to show him later on down the line. I've got calls into Panasonic about this, but so far nothing. If I can't get it to import into iMovie, I'll probably have to return it for something more mac-friendly.
    Would appreciate any and all input on how to remedy this issue. Thanks!

    and here's my original standard answer
    * DVDxDV (free trial, 25$)
    * Apple mpeg2 plugin (20$) + Streamclip (free)
    * Cinematize >60$
    * Mpeg2Works >25$ + Apple plug-in
    * Toast6/7 allows converting to dv/import dvd, hit apple-k
    * connect your Camera to a DVD-player and copy to tape/use as converter
