Panasonic Frame Rate Converter available apart from FCP 6?

The FCP 6 New Features pdf reads:
"The DVCPRO HD Frame Rate Converter is now installed with Final Cut Pro. Both 720p60 and 720p50 footage can now be converted."
Is this still a plugin, and is it available somewhere for older versions of FCP? The download on the Panasonic site is still the older version that doesn't handle 50fps.

My thought is that it is available only as part of the FCP6 package and works internally with that.
If you are asking if it is available for earlier versions, the answer in all probability is no.

  • Poor Result using Panasonic Frame Rate Converter.  Please Help!

    Hey All,
Myself and a crew of other university filmmakers shot some footage at 720P and 60 FPS on the Panasonic HVX-100 with the hopes of converting it to 24fps for smooth slow motion. We are using FCP 5.1.2 and the panasonic DVCPROHD Frame Rate Converter Tool. I am almost certain I am using the correct workflow for this, but the result yields footage that seems to be at the right speed, but is very jumpy, as if its only playing every 4th frame or so. I tried exporting the footage off the timeline as well to check and make sure it wasnt a playback problem, and it wasnt. It appears as if the converter is working incorrectly. This slow motion is vital for our project and I'm at my wits end trying to figure it out. Any help?

Ok. I tried converting making sure that i didnt remove any frames on the import from the raw P2, as well as for the export. i tried all the combos of this. I still get the jumpy slow motion because of repeatyed frames. I did notice a combo in these repeated frames, it will play 3 of one frame, then 2 of another. could this be a pulldown problem somewhere?
could you guys outline the settings you use to import (capture and editing timebases) as well as to edit on, and to process slow motin. I just want to make sure im not missing anything.
The help is SO awesome. thanks for trying to work through this with me.

  • Frame Rate Converter wobblies

    Anyone had this problem.
Digitise footage from a Panasonic AG1200 at 60fps (for Varicam DVCPRO HD)
Use the Frame Rate Converter to create reference clips from the original footage (ie 60fps to 24) then import this reference clip to discover that is actually points to another clip that I've not even touched yet. Annoying.
Second annoyance. The Frame Rate Converter throws up a message saying "The selected media file (media file name) cannot be processed by this tool. Only DCVPRO HD 720p 59.94 and 50 fps media files are supported"
Inspection of the media file shows it to be fully compatible and is even from the same tape as ones that work fine previous (ie no camera alterations)
I always feel the same working with FCP, even after all these years. Initial success followed by a gradual downfall of media reference mash up and confusion and ultimate meltdown.
My solution now will be to go the more time consuming route of creating new quicktimes from the original media and importing those into the project.
    Any thoughts appreciated.

how many hours do I have to loose in production discovering these issues before I can sit down and actually do the 'creative' stuff.
This comes from experience. And this is true for any editing system. You don't know that a "feature" doesn't work right until you find out yourself, or if you happen to work with someone who knows that "hey, that feature doesn't work right." I always did the self contained thing until I worked with another guy on a project. He started doing the REF thing and it seemed to streamline the production. Until it came time to lock the show and prep it for output. Then we had relinking issues. So we had to go back, make self contained files, link to those, then replace the REF ones in the sequence. And no, we won't do that again.
Before these forums this was something found out on the job from other editors. Or by yourself thru experience. But because you bring this up, not others who didn't know about this issue might be able to avoid it.
Now, I have a blog where I write about my experiences in editing, and share my pitfalls and successes so that this information can get out there. I was always frustrated with some feature or another on an Avid until I went to a company with 15 editors, and one of them goes "Oh, that? I figured out a way to do that..." and then they showed me. These forums are a GLOBAL way of sharing that information.
Until now, your issue really hadn't come up. And I will have to confess that I didn't blog about it. Dunno why, I should. But now many others will benefit from this experience. And if you hang out here daily, or even a couple days a week and read thru the posts, you will find all sorts of problems you can avoid.

  • Third party DVCPROHD Frame Rate Converter not showing up in tools.

How can I get a third party frame rate converter to appear in my FCP tools. I meet all system requirements... followed instructions. Not sure what is up. Any ideas?

Yeah, I downloaded it from the site onto an older G5 with an ATI 9600 in it. I could never get it to work. It showed up in the menu but couldn't actually select it.

  • DVCPRO HD Frame rate converter not working

    Hello all
I cant seem to get my frame rate converter to work. I shot the footage on my hvx200 at 720p30 and then put it in film mode and changed the frame rate to 60. Then I log and transfered it into FCP and when i go to convert it i keep getting the same message.

does anyone know why? I have gotten some footage to convert before with no problems.
    Thanks

All worked well last time I did this (late March), but upgraded to Leopard since then and brought all FCStudio apps up to date at the same time.
Looks like on import (log/transfer in FCP from Firestore) somehow the files are being flagged as having 'temporal compression', which can't be true if they're DVCPRO-HD, can it? Anyway the 'temporal compression' seems to be blocking the conform in CT, as well as the DFCPRO FRC in FCP.
So I tried importing the files from the Firestore thru an older version of FCP (5.1.4) that I have on my PowerBook (the problems described above are on my Mac Pro). I then copied these files out of the capture folder over to the Mac Pro, and sure enough: no problems with 'temporal compression'. The files were all marked as "maximum quality" and were allowed to be conformed from 60 to 24 in CTools, and have dupl frames removed using the FRC as needed.
So something appears to be broken with FCP 6.0.3 and how it imported this particular set of files on the Firestore.
I should note that if I hadn't tried to conform or FRC these files, I might never have noticed that there was a problem - they behaved as normal 720/60 files when just viewing them.

  • DVCProHD frame rate converter strips out audio?

    Hi,
We are doing a capture of DVCProHD material from DVCProHD tape. They are all coming in as DVCProHD 59.94 with 23.98 flag. Unfortunately when we captured, we captured everything as DVCProHD 59.94 with no pull down.
We are hoping to remove the duplicate frames after the fact, and tried using the DVCProHD frame rate converter tool in FCP. However, upon reading and re-writing the file, we find that FCP strips out all the audio of the original file.
I am wondering if there is a way to remove the duplicated frames and at the same time maintain the audio tracks on the new 23.98 file.
    Thanks!
    Michael
    <Edited by Moderator>

make a copy of your captured media and "conform" it in cinema tools. this will keep the audio but is destructive to the file thus you'll want to work from a copy in case you mess up. the frame rate convertor used to be used for variable speeds ie 48 over 24 for half speed thus thee audio would never sync and thus the FRC doe not process audio

  • ATV3 frame rate on HD movies from iTunes store

I bought the ATV3 recently, and I've rented two movies off the iTunes store.  Both play very smoothly most of the time, but in patches it just looks like it's missing a few frames.  Like it's 20fps instead of 30 (I actually don't know what it's supposed to be, this is just an example).  It's still watchable, but it's noticeably worse.  I might get 20 seconds of smooth followed by 5 seconds of jitter, followed by 30 seconds of smooth.  It can be very hard to detect depending on what's happening on screen, but you can definitely see it during action scenes or scrolling credits.
Both movies I have rented were HD (not sure, maybe they all are).  My internet connection is sufficient that it isn't pausing to buffer.  I paused the movie halfway through and it had already buffered the entire movie.
Any ideas why the frame rate would be dropping?  I expect the CPU to be able to play a HD movie at 1080p at full frame rate: this is what the product is designed to do.  So I want to know why it doesn't.  Is it defective and should be returned?  Am I doing something wrong?  A setting is incorrect?  All settings are still default apart from unit name & apple ID type settings.  Video settings haven't been changed.
Any assistance/suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
    Regards,
    Ian

Thanks a million Alley_Cat, looks like that was it.  I have a Samsung Plasma (PS50A750), and they have a mode called "Movie Plus".  Looks like it does some sort of motion smoothing algorithm, and was set to "Low" by default.  When set to High I saw the problem more often, and when set to Off it has disappeared.
Unfortunately the motion generally looks much smoother with this turned on (which is what it's designed to do).  In particular it has a demo mode (what they'd use in a store display), and with any panning camera or scrolling text (credits) you can see it makes a huge difference.  Switched on the motion is ultra-smooth, off it is very very slighly jerky.  Unfortunately with it switched on it has patches of real jerkiness (how's the technical jargon?!).  But I accept this is a problem with my TV processing software, and unfortunately they never released any firmware updates for it.
Maybe time for a new TV
Thanks for the help, and especially the speedy response!

  • Image Sequence Settings in QT Pro - what is the Frame Rate range available?

I am considering purchasing QT Pro for Windows. I wish to make a time lapse movie out of a series of pictures. I would like to know what the range of options is for the "Image Sequence Settings" in File->Open image Sequence... menu. Does is it go well beyond 1 second?
    Thanks!
    Chris

Frames rates are from 10 seconds per frame up to 60 frames per second.
I make many image sequence movies and just start with one frame per second.
I then "add scaled" to a properly timed audio only file. This way you can get nearly any frame rate you could ever need.

  • Converting to MP4 from FCP 7, jerky at times.

I am trying to create a HD MP4 file less than 4GB, to play my 6 min HD movie on PS3. I can not have file larger than 4GB as FAT32 will not allow it.
    1. What is the max bit rate should I use? I used 9,000 kb/sec
    2. I noticed jerky motion at times, its not smooth as in FCP playback.
Would switch to mac pro from iMac solve the problem?

No. The Pro might be faster, depending on the capabilities and spec of the two Macs but it won't make any difference to the quality.

Lightroom, Camera Raw and DNG Product Manager

Well, I managed to locate and download both the ACR 5.2 and the DNG 5.2, but it was a bit of a challenge. I have a couple of comments regarding the DNG installation.
As a sometime OS beta tester, I have developed a habit of keeping C:\ for the operating system only. When a new OS or beta is issued, I just format C: and install the new OS. I try to keep applications off C:. It is hard, though, with all the default installations. It would be nice to have the option to install DNG.exe in my applications partition.
My workflow involves importing NEF's from the memory card to a folder, and at the same time converting those NEF's to DNG's and putting them in a different folder in a different partition. Both these NEF's and DNG's are archived. A copy of the DNG's are used as working images. The virtue of DNG's is that there are no sidecar files to keep track of when exporting images. Unless I really mess up, I never go back to the NEF's again. I guess that I am an "outlier" too. I guess that this is essentially the 5 - A "double DNG-only" workflow, using type 2, the native-DNG-DNG system. This is discussed in detail by Barry Pearson at http://www.barrypearson.co.uk/articles/dng/safety.htm#personal
I do like the camera profiles. I previously have used the Fors script. My Nikon D200 lacked red and the Fors script fixed that. Not surprisingly, different profiles are appropriate for different image types. Is there any way of determining the methodology and reasoning between the different profiles, and what specific problems each one is designed to correct. This might permit better matching profiles to image types, with less trial and error.

  • DVCPRO PRO HD Frame Rate Converter

After using DVCProHD FRC to remove duplicate frames from some 720/24 over 60 clips, I compared frames from the original 60 frame clips to the new 24 frame clips. Everything looked identical -- even down to the compression artifacts in any gradients in the image -- except one slight difference: there appeared to be a slight color shift in the entire frame -- ever so slightly more red/pink.
Any reason this should be happening? The frames shouldn't be recompressed, should they? Does the codec do something different with a 24fps v. 60fps?
I know this is a pretty specific issue, but wondered if anyone else had noticed a similar effect.

  • Any other viewer available apart from CrystalReportsViewer?

    Hi all,
having an unmanaged scenario, is there any other viewer available to display CrystalReports?
I have seen that the viewer in the JRC and the RAS seem to be the same. Is that true?
Do we have another possibility to display reports without the need of installing a server (we are using the push approach so no storage of reports, user handling or backend connection is needed)?
    Thanks,
    Pascal

If data refresh is not a requirement (i.e., you're only pushing rpt files with Saved Data), then the Crystal Report Viewer XI may be a possibility:
A newer version, Crystal Reports Viewer 2008, should be out this year.

  • FCP ERROR when trying to convert variable frame rate Panasonic P2

Ok, yesterday I was able to convert variable frame rate footage so it rendered out nice slo mo's via DVCPRO HD Frame rate converter in FCP 6.0.4, it worked perfect. I tried it multiple times - So I know it can be done... Today however I created the same "easy setup" in FCP I used yesterday, and it wont work?
it comes up with the error:
"An error occurred during processing, unable to conform source media FCP" is there some setting that by default switches"
has anyone heard of this happening? it seems like a program error... but I could be wrong... I haven't been able to figure it out on my own.
    does anyone have any suggestions?
    Thanks!

    Lance,
Sounds like you have done a very thorough job of tracking down your problem and a temporary solution. Just one question. Is the footage from the HDX-900 that you say...

flagged in camera as being 24fps or are you just trying to convert it after the fact?

  • Reconnecting media after frame rate change

Shane Ross wrote a reply ( see below )  to a person that had the same problem as I am now.
I shot with HVX200 using the Firestore that converted footage to 59.94. Then, mid-project I shot with the P2 which shot at 24. I now have 2 diff. frame rates
I tested some clips in Compressor comverting the 24 to 59.94.
Using FCP Studio 2 , I was unable to reconnect the media without the in/out points being off with varying degrees.  Doing an entire re-edit will be painful.
QUESTION : Do I really have to convert the 24 to 59.94? Would it significantly affect output?
The codec is the same for all footage.  ( DVC PRO HD 720P. )
    THANKS!
[elizabeth charles] "My question is, is there anyway to change the files in my timeline to the conformed files without having to begin my editing again?"
    Nope.
You did a bad thing.  Editing, finishing, then changing the frame rate of your masters.  FCP cannot reconnect to media with differing frame rates.  Because the duration of the footage is different, and the frame rate is different. The footage has the same amount of frames..., but now they play at a different frame rate, so the duration is different. You'll have to re-edit with the new masters.
But...RECONFORM...that changes the frame rate, as well as the speed in which they play.  30fps conformed to 24fps will play in slight slow motion.  If you want the footage to play at a different frame rate, but the same speed...normal speed...you need to use Compressor.
    Shane

gang allows you to lock the viewer and canvas together so when you move one, the other moves the same amount.  To match back your footage, you find a frame with a clear difference from the previous frame, for example when someone blinks.  You then find the blink on the new source file in the viewer and then turn on the gang function It's the center thingamagic at the top of the canvas.  You then jump around the shot in the canvas and make sure the movement in the viewer matches.  you then find the in in the canvas and mark an in in the viewer, etc and replace the shot.  If this isn't clear post back.
In compressor in the frame controls panel, you enable frame controls and set the rate conversion to best.
