Panasonic SD5 and Sony CX7 - Fluid Motion or Stuttering?

So I am a backcountry skier and I've been looking for a new video camera and have narrowed it down to the Panasonic SD5 or Sony CX7 as these seem to fit my needs (high altitude use, cold environments, light weight, size, reliability and shock resistance) best. The problem is that I have downloaded many sample clips from various sites and many samples exhibit the same problem...motion is "stuttery" versus fluid. Keep in mind that since iMovie won't let me import the files, I must convert to Quicktime using Voltiac.
When you hook up your CX7 or SD5 directly to your HDTV, is the motion smooth, similar to a conventional camcorder? When you import the video from the camcorder to iMovie 08, how are your movies and DVDs turning out? Of course if you have any sample video posted on the web, that would be great to check out.

Looking for a new HD flash based camcorder and would like some opinions on which would work better. Like that I can use existing SD cards that already own in the SD5, but also like the fact that the Sony can utilize the Bluetooth Mic. which would be nice for recording kids events. Will use mostly for shooting kids and their school and sporting events including baseball, Soccer and Hockey.

Newbie - General HD Questions - Plus Sony & Panasonic

I've been a standard definition guy for years, and am thinking of moving to a HD camcorder. I'm a relative newcomer to the Mac, and am using IMovie 09.
IMovie 09 is just the tool - it's the output that counts - and in my case, it's going to be the Apple TV for 80% of my movies, and standard definition DVDs (using IDVD) for the remaining 20% of my movies.
Neither of these things (Apple TV or DVDs) can display in 1080 resolution. Am I therefore still able to use a HD camcorder or not? Will IMovie keep the high-res 1080 footage on my hard disk, and then just convert to Apple TV and/or DVD format as appropriate? -- or am I stuck with 1080, with no easy option of using IDVD....?
Also, if I move into the world of HD, does the time taken to render to AppleTV and IDVD grow exponentially over using a standard def camera? And, is IMovie still a usable product, or does editing etc become painfully slow, using HD high bitrate films? Does the addition of Turbo264HD become a valuable or essential addition?
Also, I find it frustrating that the list of supported camcorders doesn't change very often.
For example, I wonder if the SONY HDR-XR105E, HDR-CX105ES, HDR-TG3E are compatible, in addtion to the HDR-CX11E which is on the list. I see no reason why not, but it's too much of a gamble.
Also, the Panasonic HDC-SD100 AVCHD Camcorder has good reviews, and I think does 1080p (the Sony only does 1080i as far as I know). Question - is 1080p the same as doing 25p? I notice an article on Apple's site about Panasonic's 26p, which says "If you plan on importing clips into iMovie '09, do not use Digital Cinema Mode settings when recording with your camcorder". However, it doesn't say anything about the PAL version (25p), but I'm assuming it'll have the same issue as the 26p. This obviously makes the advantage of the Panasonic over the Sony useless.

HD is the way to go -- even with appletv. I have AppleTV and now hardly ever burn any video! I'm working off a new macbook, but your imac is faster processor. I just did a 20 minute video last night-- a combination of DV and HDV with a theme-- I imported on Full and large for a test run. I didn't see much difference on the appleTV for either one. I suggest still importing on full to future proof. Then you just export to itunes select the setting for appletv. It took an hour. No biggie. Output was not as good as my camera, but I can't find anything yet that gives me equal to my HD camera plugged straight to the TV via an HDMI port.
The minute you bring footage into imovie it is second generation even if you output full footage to Western Digital Media Player that can handle 1080p. There is a compressing process the footage goes through...with that said....it's still pretty good! Much better in HD even outputting at any resolution!
Now for the camcorder, find Steve Mullen's posts. He has several on different issues with cameras and codec's. Bottom line: Its best to edit in progressive. However, 1080p 60 you need a mac pro!
1080p 30 is ok. I shoot 1080 60i. Its fine also, but some people are having issues with interlacing!
imovie can't handle 24p-- or something like that.....There are a bunch of threads on camcorders. Do a search on 1080p and see what pops up. Find Steve Mullens post. Click on his name and then you can see all his posts on this topic from various threads! He recommends actually 720 60p, but its very hard to find.

Anyone Familiar with Mobile TV Elite for iPad

The only info I seem to be able to find online are sales pitches.
My hubby just downloaded it to watch the NASCAR race today and is having issues finding the correct channel. Everything I can find says it should be on there, but he can't seem to get it to work.

The Pioneer 9G Elite series is still considered to be the best TV in the industry. Look at all the reviews across the web, and the Elite is the tops. The Panasonic G10 comes close as does the Sony XBR8.
One of the reasons that Pioneer left the plasma business was that the average consumer wasn't willing to spend upwards of $4,500 for a 50" set and the costs associated to manufacture each panel were too high to justify Pioneer from continuing their plasma line. The Elite line obviously catered to the niche ultra high-end video and audiophile and custom installer.
Whether Panasonic will incorporate the "Kuro" technology time will tell. Pioneer will continue to support their products so purchasing one shouldn't scare you.
I snagged the 50" Elite from BB last week and going to have it professionally ISF calibrated. I've always been a Sony guy and also considered the XBR8 series but could not justify Sony's price markup and for me, the picture quality wasn't representative of actual real world images even after fiddling with the controls. I'm obviously biased and it's personal taste, but head over the AVS forums and you'll see that the Elite is still regarded as the king. I waited for 10 months before purchasing the Elite and extremely glad I held out till now as you can get a $4500 TV for almost half that price.

Any camera recommendations

Hi Everyone, Im wanting to upgrade from a Canon Vixia HF20. Wanting to spend between $1000 to $2000. Ive been checking out various cameras by Panasonic, Canon, and Sony and reading the mixed reviews. The reviews are mostly by amateurs so Im hoping some of you will be willing to lead me in the right direction. I am mostly filming myself as a talking head sharing coaching knowledge. Ed, I would look for a camera that implements AVCHD's highest current data transfer rate, which is 24 megabits/second (not to be confused with frame rate). Both of the cited Canon models do.
Broadcast cameras typically have rather low megapixel sensors - and are 1920x1080 in size. Some top ENG cameras, for instance have a 1mpx sensors. But there are pixels, and there are pixels. Large photosite, high-quality pixels are the norm in broadcast gear. Low-light sensoring can get you out of a jam, but it's no substitute for good lighting. The other advantage of the 1/3" low-pixel density sensor on these cameras is the increased dynamic range. Bear in mind, too, that broadcast video is recorded at a high data-transfer rate, typically 50megabits/second or higher, which accounts for the pristine images and high detail: think Superbowl, despite the small sensor size. The top AVCHD data transfer rate is currently 24mbps, although Panasonic and Sony are discussing, or have agreed, to increase that in the new spec.
I assume both cameras have manual control, and wouldn't want a camera without it, but the HF G10 has a configurable custom control button, which I would miss. I don't know if HF 41 has one. Mine (on the HF S21) is set to exposure control: it lets me instantly lock exposure and/or increase or decrease it by quarter stops without going to the menu. I lock exposure for virtually every shot, as I don't like exposure to drift or adjust during the shot.
Canon makes a quite high-quality after-market stereo microphone for these cameras with a three-position switch for cardioid, hypercardiod, and shotgun configurations. It comes with a dead cat wind-suppression cover and is powered through the camera's mini hot shoe. I use it a lot.
Canon's touch-screen technology is a pleasure to use too. You can touch someone's face on the screen, or an object, and it will follow-focus wherever it goes in the frame. You can set exposure the same way. If it sounds like I favor Canon - I do. I'm sure other makes have their advantages, and I'm not a fanboy, but I research purchases heavily and Canon, so far, has always come out ahead of the pack.

MBP for video. Thoughts?

I'm buying a new MBP this week and having a bit of trouble deciding which configuration. Any help would be fantastic.
I plan on using this for light video editing with Final Cut Studio 2 and encoding as WMV files. My budget will only allow for a 15" 2.4GHz MBP. The question comes up with configuration. My options here are an internal 160GB 7200RPM HD or an internal 160GB 5400RPM HD with an attached 160GB 7200RPM bus powered firewire drive.
I don't usually like to capture video to the system HD, even if i'm only working with DV video. But between the camera (as a deck) and an external firewire drive, there's a lot to carry around. Will using the internal HD as a capture scratch be a serious detriment to performance? Am I much better off using an external in this situation? Or will the 5400RPM internal drive still give me poor performance even if the capture scratch is on a faster external?

I normally capture to the internal HD and then move the entire captured footage to an external drive for editing - reconnecting the footage in FCP is easy. With DV/MiniDV material that is not really needed - it is more a space problem and a convenience thing (I can easily connect the external disk to the MacPro at home and just transfer the project file via WLAN). The internal SATA drives do really have sufficient bandwidth for normal editing - and other factors (GPU/CPU/RAM) are more likely to be limiting. You would have to do some heavy compositing / use a severe number of tracks to really challenge the HD when using DV footage.

Adobe media encoder cs4 extremely slow (5 hours for 8 minute video)

I know you have seen slowencoder issues before, but I have tried everything I can to fix this and need help.
Lets start with basic info:
8 minute vieo takes over 5 hours to generate final video.
Observations: 3 processes are running most of the time, with over 2GB memory left over and available, I/O is low, CPU is at 90 to 100 percent for hours during encode.
PProHeadless.exe 48-50%
Adobe Media Encoder.exe 30-40%
ImporterProcessServer.exe can be from 30-50% CPU but not constant.
I live in San Jose, and am willng to take this laptop to your Office to debug it personally. (FYI)
CS4: 4.2.1 with all updates applied
ALL Encoder OUTPUT is set to a 128GB Solid State Drive drive so there are very low delays on I/O: SAMSUNG MMCRE28G8MXP-0VB.
This setting is in the general disk setting, media cache files, etc. All I/O is to this drive, except the project file which for some reason gets copied to temp on c drive... (no I/O there however)
OS Boot drive is the seagate hybrid drive and is also very fast: ST95005620AS

I use time Warping ON SOME OF THE CLIPS, and I TOOK 2 of the 60P videos and set the time to 10% and 20% IN THIS PROJECT FOR SLOW MOTION OF THE ENTIRE CLIP.
Another note that you need to look at separately:
I have seen issues trying to time warp and 60P video interpreted at 30P and time warped. It displays fine, but WILL NOT RENDER. I deleted these and re-did them at 10 and 15% time respectively to get the video rendered.

Cost: I got 2 of the Kingston 128GB SSD V100 from Costco at around 165 each (after rebate). They are on sale, and there is a 40 rebate each drive (up to 2) rebate.
Yes you are right, I did not expect improvements for Premiere pro, but I installed because I use this configuration on other systems for 1 year... and here are the results...
ALL of the data on this sytem is backed up on my 8TB server. I can loose anything here and get it back. I see the OS as just another replaceable disk.
I used the system motherboard hardware Raid 0 for C: AND... I put 3 of the 1TB drives on the motherboard hardware raid as a data disk. Data disk is ALL scratch disk, for the encoded files and cache. Source files are on the other software striped drive. Of course I loaded a fresh install and moved to Windows 7 64bit...
Overall observations:
     As you predicted encode times did not improve much, It was 15 minutes vs 17 minutes at 2.66 clock. I am unimpressed with the Intel Motherboard Raid 0. I saw the SSD was blazingly fast, but I think moving these to a RAID controll they will go faster. Each SSD drive in 200+MB/S rated.
What I do see is dramatic improvements in load times of the OS and ANY program you run. The pagefile was moved back to this raid 0 drive after benchmarks. RUNNING ANY application (adobe, microsoft, ALL are blazingly fast to load).
Example: Premiere pro CS5 from click on launch to CS5 prompting for a project name was 5.5 seconds... I would not take this out of the system for any money saved. It is amazing. Almost as good as the nvidia quadro FX 4000 Display card and the CS5.
My NEXT investment IS the RAID controller, and 6 of the Hitachi deskstar 3TB 6GPS Sata III drives to replace all my current drives. Next month or so for that.
I want components that I can keep in the system when I do replace the motherboard and CPU. I will tune this system as I have funds, and ask for help when this system no longer is viable and replace the motherboard. I will ask for the fastest motherboard and CPU combo that you can buy, and keep my 730X(treme) case and add a water cooler. As drives add 1TB a year in size, they seem to meet myneeds and I replace the old every 2 years to get the space I need.
As always your comments are spot on and I appreciate your reviews.

Why is a monitor more expensive than a hd lcd tv

why is a 30 inch hd lcd monitor £1900 when you can buy a 32 inch panasonic or a sony high definition lcd tv with digitl buit in, hdmi sockets and use it for every thing for £1400?
can some 1 explain this to me, you can even get samsungs for £1050 which is less still.

Its to do with resolution. The Apple monitors support a higher resolution, therefore, require individual pixels. So, on a 20" monitor, the resolution is 1680x1050, on a TV screen, this is usally 1024x768 or 1280x768 (widescreen). This is because most broadcasts are 500-lines or so for normal definition, or 720 or scalled down from 1080 for HD resolution. But computer monitors are used for multi-tasking, etc, so require a high resolution to open lots of apps and view them at the same time. Making these panels requires a more expensive manufacturing process to get the panels made with the minimal of errors and dead pixels. A 30" LCD TV for HD would have a resolution of 1376x768 or 1280x768, the Apple HD monitor has one of 2560x1900 - way better - this is why it'll be better to get a Mac monitor for an extremely sharp picture with no scalling of HD footage, you'll get the full quality.

Cannot connect samsung hdtv to imac

Hi Accidently posted this on intel forum but someone suggested this is correct place.
Have 2.7ghz I5 21 inch Mac with OSX with 10.7.4 version. Have purchased new Samsung 7500 HDTV and cannot connect the two. Have purchased Thunderbolt to HDMI converter cable all in one. All the TV says is no signal.
Have tried
1. All three HDMI ports on the TV
2. Each combination of turning each device on including another thread suggesting turn TV on first with cable connected then turn Mac on
3. Forcing computer in displays to detect TV but it does not
Any suggestions greatfullly recieved, many thnaks

An Update
After trying to solve this for a few days took the Mac into the TV shop. Mac worked with Panasonic, LG and Sony and even worked with Samsung Series 5 & 6 but not with Samsung series 7 or 8.
Hence have returned Samsung and now have a Panasonic.
Not sure if other Apple products are affected but a Mac and Samsung Series 7 & 8 are not compatible, surely this will be a big issue??

Which camcorder do I get?

I was curious about what sort of camcorder to buy. I would like to purchase an HDD with a Sd slot. Problem is, I've heard concerns about the JVC GZ-MG555 and Panasonic HDC-SD1 and the SDR-200 having some compatibility issues. Can anyone recommend a good camcorder thats around 500 - 600? I greatly appreciate the help.

I have used and tested many cams for reviews. My advice for a100% trouble free iMovie experience:
price range 500-800 USD: stick to mini-dv SD quality. Do not buy a HD cam in this price range.
the Panasonic NV-GS300 or NV-GS320 is top notch. 3CCD guarantee superb image
price range 800-1100 USD: buy a HD cam with mini-dv tapes.
the Canon HV20 is no doubt the best buy and 100% compatible with EVERY current imovie and Final Cut version
price range 1100-2000 USD: buy a SD or HD based AVCHD cam. image is not better than HV20; and no compatibility with iMovie 06 nor Final Cut Express. You wil enjoy though lightweight cam and fun of random access of recording. At the moment any 5.1 sound cam has stereo downmix problem with iMovie 08 and FCP6.01. I expect Apple to solve this but stick now to stereo mic.

A special cam is the JVC HD7. This cam costs 1500 USD records in HDV mode and is compatible with every iMovie and FCP version when using streaming via fire wire. The harddisk guarantees 5 hours recording and random access. Forget zooming more than 5x because stabilisation is poor. Forget full HD filming with this cam because getting the footage in the Mac is via this route slow and requires the very very best hardware on the Mac side at this moment. Yet this cam gives me every day fun in filming and playing with all the options.

Audio CD disappears after confirming impoty into iTunes

Setup:
Hardware: New Macbook Pro 15"
Software: Preinstalled software no modifications or additions solely upgrades.
When I try to import a CD into iTunes the following occurs:
1 The CD is displayed on the Desktop as Audio CD.
2 iTunes queries Gracenote and downloads the track details which flash up in iTunes.
3 The Audio CD icon disappears from the desktop and cannot be seen as mounted in either Finder or iTunes.
4 I press the eject button, eject the CD, push the CD back into the computer and the second time the Audio CD icon remains and the tracks can be imported. This is extremely easy to reproduce as it happens every time.
I am new to Apple and Mac OS X but this appears to be a possible bug. I am a systems developer on Linux, Unix, Windows .... but I am not familiar with the OS X API's or kernel. It appears that the automounting of the CD is not working.
I looked at the system.log in /var/log and kept seeing the following call fail.
/Applications/iTunes.app/Contents/MacOS/iTunes(1959) StatusMonitor::volumesChangedCallBack returned -47
Any help would be appreciated.

Just to clarify the "Superdrive" thing:
All optical drives that can burn to DVD, installed as original equipment in Macs, are called "Superdrives".
The name covers a multitude of different drives installed over the years. Many of them, in fact, aren't all that "super". They often have downtuned firmware installed by Apple that actually reduces their capabilities by limiting burn speeds or compatible media types etc. Most have actually been either Matshita (ie Panasonic) or Optiarc (Sony NEC) or , less frequently, Pioneer drives in recent times.
Your Matshita UJ-845 is a "superdrive", as is the Matshita UJ-857E in the MBP I'm typing this on , too.
Apple installed drives which can read DVD's , but only burn to CD-R, are called "combo" drives. Again they can be from various manufacturers and have come as a vast array of models, speeds, etc over the years.

This new version of the Camera Raw plug-in replaces the original Camera Raw plug-in that was installed with Adobe Photoshop CS2 and Adobe Photoshop Elements 3.0 and 4.0 software. Visit the Camera Raw page for a complete list of supported cameras.

Read the installation instructions carefully. Incorrect installation will prevent Adobe Bridge and Adobe Camera Raw 3.5 from reading raw images correctly.

To answer the most likely questions:
No, this update does not support the Nikon D80 nor the Canon 400D [Rebel XTi] yet. We receieved these cameras too late in our development cycle to make the cut for this release. We understand there are a lot of users now getting these cameras who want support as soon as possible.
There are also a bunch of other cameras models likely to be announced at Photokina which will want to support as soon as possible.
Because of this demand, we are planning to make the time gap between the ACR 3.5 and 3.6 releases shorter than usual, so you will not have to wait all that long for support.
Also, we are nearing completion of the Beta 4 release of Lightroom. This will be released fairly soon (before the release of ACR 3.6). Lightroom is currently in a free public beta program:

Beta 4 of Lightroom will have preliminary support for both the Nikon D80 and the Canon 400D.
So in the time period the Beta 4 release of Lightroom (soon) and ACR 3.6 (shorter cycle than usual), you wil be able to processor your Nikon D80 and Canon 400D files using Lightroom Beta 4. You will also have the option of using the Beta 4 build Lightroom to convert the Nikon D80 and Canon 400D raw files into DNG format, which can then be used with ACR versions as old as 2.4.

How edit DVCPro HD and HDV footage in the same multi-clip project?

Dear All
I am to edit a music video material shot with two cameras. I received the footage as .mov files, but one file is a DVCPro HD 1080i50 codec and the other is a HDV 1080i50 codec. - It seems the music concert was recorded on two different cameras (I guess one was Panasonic the other Sony).
How can I edit the music video using multi-clip editing? - I guess I will have to reconvert one of the footage-format to match the other format. If so, which conversion assures the best quality: from DVCPro HD to HDV or vice versa?
Or should I ask for the original tapes and then import all as a HDV codec (is that possible with the DVCPro?)?
I have never worked with the DVCPro codec before. So any links further explanations and tutorials are appreciated.

Thank you for the tip. I converted the DVCPro footage into a HDV file and it looks good. The new file is only 9BG compared to the DVCPro file of 39GB. Quite surprising that such a down-conversion still results in a rather good quality.
