Panasonic nv-gs180 and 16:9

I shot footage with my new Panasonic NV-GS180 in 16:9 wide mode. iMOvie sees my camera fine but imports the footage in 4:3 mode and pillarboxes it. How do I get iMovie to give me the correct aspect ratio?
Thanks!

If you export the footage from the JVC in Standard-Def mode (..I'm not familiar with the latest JVCs, so I don't know if there's a facility to do that, but I assume that the camera can export HD as SD, like Sony hi-def cameras can..) then you could mix'n'match that JVC footage with the 16:9 Panny footage.
Unfortunately, my similar project is on a different machine, so I can't.. oh: wait a minute: here's a screen-grab of some Sony hi-def footage, 'downconverted' in the camera and imported into iMovie as standard-def, with another SD clip added after it (..in this case a 4:3 clip..)
(..click on the pic above to see a larger, clearer version..)
But you won't be able to mix'n'match true HD with normal SD in the same project: you'd have to bring the HD into iMovie as 'downconverted' (..exported from the camera..) into standard-def first.
[..NOTE that the first DV clip in that picture, above, is a "disposable" (not really wanted) clip, which was purposely put into the new project first to "convince" iMovie that the program's supposed to be playing, and importing, normal DV-Widescreen, and to tell iMovie to IGNORE the HDV 1080i identity which the connected Sony camera announced itself to be even when the Sony was playing 'downconverted' standard-def down the FireWire cable. I don't know, though, how to set up a JVC to export hi-def which it's 'downconverting' to standard-def as it exports, sorry..]
(..Sorry this may seem a bit garbled: I've got knee-ache and back-ache today!..)

  • New MacBook and Panasonic NV-GS180 Camcorder

I cannot import content from my Panasonic NV-GS180 camcorder onto my new MacBook (10.5.6). There is no firewire port on the new MacBook, and the USB cable that came with the camcorder doesn't seem to transmit anything. When I plug it in nothing happens. I open iMovie to tell it to import but it says it can't find anything. I have tried through image capture as well but that says it can't find any external device. Anyone know the answer? Appreciate it, thanks.

The Panasonic camera will have a 4 pin.
I don´t know what kind of FW the computer has, it is either 4 or 6 pin.
So you will need a 4 to 6 pin FW cable or a 4 to 4 pin FW cable
Since you will be working with DV i suggest that you use iMovie 06 instead of 08.
iMovie 06 is better with DV material.
You can read a lot on this forum way many people use imovie 06 instead of 08 when they work with DV
You can download 06 from Apple for free when you have imovie 08 on your computer
And yes you can transfer the material to your new computer
    Cheers

  • FCE compatibility with Panasonic PV-GS180 ?

Just wondering if anyone knows if the Panasonic PV-GS180 camcorder with work with FCE 3 on PPC eMacs, and/or FCE 3.5 on Intel iMacs with integrated video memory?
    Thank you!

I should work fine. It's a DV camera and has a FireWire out that you can connect to your Mac. Just don't try using the USB out with FCE - that won't work.
In regard to the camera, whether your Mac is PPC or Intel doesn't matter, nor does the version of FCE, nor does the Intel GMA video in the Macbooks and Intel Minis. If you have an Intel based Mac, however, you do you need to go with FCE v3.5 or higher.
It's a nice little package at a reasonable price, but if you haven't purchased the camera yet, see if you can find a suitable model with CCDs larger than the 1/6" CCDs that this one has and also optical stabilization. You will notice the difference.

  • AVCHD Panasonic HMC-150 and Premier 4.1 - Escalated problem

Just spent 3 hours on tech support in India reagrding AVCHD and premier 4.1 - plus about 2 weeks in Panasonic Engineering-
I have a Panasonic HMC 150 and could not play the footage (strobe like plus mosaic- explaining that to a foreign laguage I think went OK- )
The tech support manager has "escalated" this as of Wed Sept 23rd because he has had "100 calls about this recenty". I have sent test footage to Panasonic engineering for confirmation of "clean footage" and that was confimed Monday Sept 21st. I then viewed a training segement on Adobe TV Tuesday by Dave Helmly and he was importing HMC 150 footage onto a OS 10.5.6 --- 2.93 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo with 8 gig memory- and it was perfect. I am running 3.06 Ghz and 4 gig memory (which Dave stated as not a problem in the training) Hoping to open the conversation to other users to solve this. If anyone can put us in touch with Dave that would be great.

    1. update your graphics driver
I have a Nvidia Ge Force 8800GS. When I could not find a mac driver
version at the Nvidia' site (the archives say  that is only for windows....)
I called Apple Care and we thought it was strange - but the supervisor said
that it automatically updates.(as best as I could understand the
    communication.
    - Yes, that's correct.  Sorry, don't always look as to what platform...
    2. make sure you have the latest update on Premiere Pro (currently 4.1)--
    got it
    3. clean the media cache in Premiere Pro - Ugh don not know how to do that-
did not find that it "help" tab
Preferences>Media and then there should be a button.  This probably won't fix it, but it can't hurt.
    4. trash the preferences folder -- I think - the adobe help hade me create a
new user and still had the problem
Mac: UserDocuments>Adobe>Premiere Pro.. Take the 4.0 folder and drag it to your desktop.  This is the prefs file.  When you launch Premiere Pro, it will create a new version.
    5. uninstall/reinstall (with running CS4 clean script)  - I do not know what
    clean script is....

  • Panasonic SDR-H40P and FCP HD

    Hello,
I am upgrading my analog S-VHS setup to digital with a Panasonic SDR-H40P and am experiencing difficulties with the import and aspect ratio. I have calculated the pixel dimensions of the native video from the camera as 834 x480. I am not familiar with these dimensions? (640x480, 720x486 are familiar to me) Which preset should I edit to accommodate this camera or is there an existing codec and preset I can use native?
    Norman

The camera records in an mpeg 2 format that must be converted to an editable format.
You may need to use mpeg streamclip to convert it.
If the camera records Standard Definition video, convert the mpeg2 files to DV/NTSC (720x480).

  • Panasonic HVX-200 and FCPX import issue

I'm using a Panasonic HVX-200 and having trouble importing the data from the P2 cards into FCPX. I get this error message: The following clip encountered an error during import and is still referencing media on the camera:  The files play as long as the camera is connected, which is useless in the long run.

I was on the phone today with several terrific Apple techs for about five hours and we may have gotten to the bottom of this.
FCPX works well with many different recording formats of the HVX 200 and the p2 cards. But I have had issues with importing 720/30PN footage. It just would not work.
After many hours of trouble shooting with me on the phone, the Apple tech was able to replicate the problem on an HVX 200 at their office.
Apparently FCPX works with HVX 200 1080i, 480i, just about any footage except the 720 set.
He opened an inquiry with the FCPX engineering department and they are looking into it.

  • How can I get my Panasonic 3D TV and BluRay Player to go online using Time Capsule?

So I've extended my home network using my Time Capsule so that I have a stronger signal in different parts of my home. My Time Capsule isn't hard wired to the modem, but I'm now getting a stronger signal in parts of my house that never had good signal strength. That being said, I've set up my Time Capsule in my living room right next to my home theater system. I thought since Time Capsule is connected to the internet, I would be able to connect my 3D TV and BluRay player (both Panasonic) to it. I did wire connect the tv and BD player to the Time Capsule, but no connection is happening between the tv and BD player and net. Can anyone help me out a bit? Does the Time Capsule need to be hard wired to the modem for this to work?

Let's check your settings first on the Time Capsule.
Open AirPort Utility - Click Manual Setup
Click the Wireless tab below the row of icons
What setting do you see for Wireless Mode?
What type of router (make / model number) is providing the "main" wireless network that the Time Capsule is trying to "extend"?

  • Matching video sources: Panasonic DVX 100 and Canon G10

I am trying to match digital video captured on mini-DV from a Panasonic DVX100 with video captured on a Canon G10 digital camera. The G10 footage is a good quality, but looks noticably different, the clips do not blend well. Has anyone tried something like this before, or have any suggestions?

A lot can be accomplished in the 3Way to get what you want, in fact, I would advise you against using Color for this, unless you know it and unless you're looking to establish an image baseline and have Color render new media. Time should have been taken to match the DVX100 to the G10 beforehand on chart like a DSCLabs Chrome du Monde or at least with a Macbeth Color checker.
Find similar shots from each camera, place a marker at each spot. Toggle back and forth between the markers, observe your scopes (the vectorscope, waveform and RGB Parade - ignore the histogram as it's fairly worthless) as they will tell you what to do.
    Manipulate away.
Don't know how to read your scopes? There's a section in the manual that quickly gives the highlights of this great skill to know.
If you get in a bind, send me a couple of .tiffs from similar shots of each camera and I'll get you started.

  • Panasonic DMC-FZ8 and Leopard - third party plugins for use of RAW?

    Hello!
I have a Panasonic DMC-FZ8 camera, and frequently find myself in situations that require the use of RAW image format. Unfortunately, even as of the 10.5.4 update, this camera's RAW format is not supported by OS X natively - only through Photoshop Elements 4 in my case. (Leopard's formats as of today: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1475) While I can read and edit the raw images, it's a hassle to go through photoshop when importing images - Ideally, i'd like to simply import the images into iPhoto ('08) to browse and touch up - instead of opening in PS, editing, saving as JPG (or TIFF), and so on.
Is there any plugin for OS X that will allow me to view/use my RAW format - at least in iPhoto? Ideally, I'm thinking of something similar to the way the perian plugin works for Quicktime. (See here for Perian: http://perian.org/)
    Thanks

    Hi Daddeo,
I have not seen any but some of the codes that some of us have been receiving in this forum have worked for me as a plugin. I copy the code and paste it in a snippet and it does what I wanted. Search the forum for the things you want to accomplish. Chances are someone has asked for it and someone has helped. If you really do not find anything ask and someone will help.
    Good luck

  • Any solution for Panasonic Raw files and/or DNG support?

Hi folks - in addition to my Nikon cameras I shoot with a Panasonic LX3 and soon a GF-1 - and so far I haven't had any luck getting any sort of raw files from the panasonics to be read by Aperture. I had thought that with Apple's DNG support that there would be a way to convert the files to DNG and then import, but so far I have had no luck.
I realize that the GF1 is brand new, but the LX3 is over a year old and supported by all of Apple's competitors. I really don't want to switch to lightroom, but it is getting harder and harder to stick with Aperture.

Eric: Great, Aperture 3 might be out by spring 2010? That's only 6 months or so from now. [/sarcasm]
I appreciate the pointer to the AI article, but personally I'm more interested in whether Apple is working on adding additional RAW support for Aperture/Mac OS X any time soon, and certainly before Aperture 3 is out. Both Aperture 2 and Lightroom 2.5 are more than capable for my workflow and editing needs.
This week only added to my dismay re: Aperture v. Lightroom update likelihood and frequency; still radio silence from Apple, and Adobe releases a public beta of Lightroom 3, even as Lightroom 2 was released subsequent to Aperture 2 and has had more updates since its initial release than Aperture 2.
Brian, can you elaborate on the DNG conversion process that worked for you? Having tried every possible profile (I believe) in the latest release of the DNG Converter app, I have to say I'm skeptical that there's a setting that works with the GF1. But I'm ready to be pleasantly surprised!

  • Panasonic Raw, DNG, and Aperture

So, I've tried everything I can to get a Panasonic RAW file into aperture without going through ACR and outputting a TIFF. I have tried all DNG converter options (Yes, ALL, in every combination) To no avail.
Here is the interesting part though: Aperture will generate the thumbnail, but when imported it says Image Unsupported. This was even with jpeg preview set to NONE in DNG Converter. SO if Aperture can extrapolate a thumbnail preview, why can't it work with the image?
    Interesting.....
    Dustin.

What would be even better would be support for the
linear conversion that can be embedded in a DNG file
    - that way you could use DNG files converted from
almost any camera under the sun and import them,
    including medium-format backs.
I submitted a request for this and everyone else should too - perhaps then priority for it would increase.
The annoying thing is that Linear DNG is supposed to be the format that ALWAYS works even when other DNG conversions fail. It exists as a fallback, so supporting some DNG files but not Linear RAW is madness.

  • Hi. Quick question I am working with Panasonic GH3 footage and it is playing back in slow motion?

Hi. Quick question I am working with Panasonic GH3 footage shot using .MOV wrapper with their IPB 50mbps and All-Intra 72MBPS codecs and they are playing back in slow motion in Sg CC. The footage works fine in PP CC and I have no clue on how to fix it. Is this a bug or do I a have a setting wrong some place?

Yes it turns red this is silly PP and AE have no problem with playback for these codecs. So it is indeed Sg not handling the codec correctly and not my system?
What if I transcoded it to something else other than the previous what would you reccommend?
I was going to transcode to ProRes but 5DtoRGB does not work on Windows with GH3 codecs.
What is the correct time warp seting under clip properties? I screwed with it and forgot the default setting.
Is there a way to reset Sg back to defaults settings globaly. I tried to many settings trying to fix the playback and may have left something in the wrong state.
    Thanks...
