Panasonic SD700 - Best output??

Im recording video on my Panasonic SD700, which I import into FCE using Log and Transfer.
When I export to Quicktime, the resulting video is either of a poor quality (jagged edges as the camera moves around etc), or the frame rate drops so panning is not smooth.
What are the best output settings, assuming I want to ultimately get my video onto DVD???

Before exporting make sure you have rendered everything.
I often have need to experiment with different settings and see the results quickly on DVD so I keep a few DVD±RWs handy that I can re-use hundreds of times, which saves wasting DVDs.
My tests are usually no more than a minute long, using typical problematic footage eg. action rather than static shots.
These mini-projects take only minutes to prepare plus a few more minutes to burn to DVD.

Panasonic SD700 Camcorder compatibility with iMovieHD

I am considering the purchase of a Panasonic SD700 Camcorder not just for the reported image quality but because it has sockets for an external mike and headset. My only remaining doubt is its compatibility with iMovieHD. Is is simply a case of transferring the SD card from the camcorder to my Mac or does the camcorder output have to be converted into an iMovieHD-compatible format? Help would be appreciated. Regards.

There have been a number of responses to my initial query but none seems to address it directly. I have both iMovie 09 and iMovie HD. The Panasonic model in which I am interested is the SD700 which only uses SD cards. I want to buy the most compatible camera possible to use with either of the above applications. I am trying to avoid having to do conversions to another format before I can edit. I am a newcomer to video & camcorders trying to avoid an expensive purchasing error. What are best output options in DVDSP for playback on VGA Computer Screen?

I understand that DVDs were designed to be viewed on TV sets - not computer monitors with much higher resolution than a TV set.
However .... I'm curious what the best output options are within DVDSP3 for playback on a standard 19" VGA computer screen 1024x768 and not necessarily on a TV screen. Any ideas?
Will DVDSP3 address playback on a standard VGA computer screen any better than iDVD6? .... or are they both very much the same?
Here's my objective:
MiniDV>FCP HD >DVD SP3>DVD-R / Playback on VGA 19" Monitor only (no TV involved).

George - I'm not a web designer, so I'm probably not the best person to respond but here goes anyway (FWIW):
(anywhere from 10sec to 2min) for website visitors to play (but not download). There can be multiple audios per web page.
No problem. QuickTime. X-platform and you can set whether it's downloadable or not - but that's really moot, as anything on the web can be captured, especially with the 'analog loophole' such as WireTap or Audio Hi Jack.
I need a combination of buttons from very simple round (or square 20x20 pix) to a bar style with volume control, both with the option to change the color to fit my site.
Buttons are your business - nothing to do with playback functionality. They are usually just a link to a file - your site should be set up to play anything, by anything, that's clicked on… Flash, QT whatever

So you're hosting? I'd hate to go down that path… what if your site takes off? What if it goes down?You'd never handle the bandwidth. IMO better to buy inexpensive (but competent) hosting for $10 or so per month and avoid the headaches, and expand the hosting service as and when required.

I have QT files, not downloadable (well, supposedly) from text links (check the green "Here's" links). The link method (graphic, text, whatever) is your design, not part of the playback system.

What's the best output method for publishing onto a DVD that

(Sothinkmedia *dot* com) is one of them. That will also allow you
to attach a playback bar, or, just use the one in your media
player, similar to what you see in YouTube.

You can connect an iPod to any sound system. So the best "output device for iPod" is the same as the +best output device, period.+
I'm told you get better sound (for the purpose of feeding into a sound system) if you connect the audio output through the docking connector, instead of from the headphone jack. You get +line level audio out+ like with other audio system components.
You can do so if you have a Docking Station device with a stereo jack, or if you get a cable like this one.

Best Output Format for Slide Show?

If I were to purchase Final Cut Studio...
What would be the best output format to use for a simple slideshow intended for Web deployment? In other words, which encoding method will provide the best compromise between file size and video quality? The slideshow is a series of simple static images with some fade transitions and Ken Burns effects. There is also a soundtrack for background music.
A 1.5 minute slideshow with soundtrack created using Adobe Flash is less than 2 MB in size (which is great for Web deployment), and it looks very good. If that same slideshow is exported from Flash to a QuickTime-compatible format, it balloons to over 20 MB!
So what I'd really like to know is, if something like Final Cut Pro were used to create that same slideshow, would I be able to produce a web-ready video that rivals the Flash version in size?

And yes, you can convert a QuickTime movie to flash, but it's just not the same in terms of file size as generating the same slideshow directly in Flash. I suspect this is because Flash is optimized for animation, whereas the QuickTime codecs are designed for video, and a simple slideshow is more of an animation than a video.
So my real question is (and I suspect the answer is no), is it possible using Final Cut Studio to generate a simple slideshow which rivals the output from Flash in terms of file size for a given resolution?

what's the best output format to burn a dvd with? I normally select a h264, but i don't know which preset i should use (between "match source high bitrate and hd1080...)

A DVD is Standard Definition... export using the MPEG2-DVD preset and import the TWO (audio and video) files in Encore for authoring

The amount of motion, especially off-axis motion, would be where to look for ultimate qualtiy, established by Bit-Rate. Lower motion footage, will still look good,at a lower Bit-Rate, but only the editor, or the client, can make the final determination.

50fps conform with Panasonic SD700

I have a Panasonic SD700 which shoots at 50p and I use a lot for ski footage in slowmo, this works great.
With FCP 7 I would import the footage, convert to prores 422 and use Cinema tools to conform to 50fps.
When I now import to FCPX it seems to want to match it pack to the project rate of 25. I can Modify - Retime - 50% but I'm not sure as to what FCPX has done with the original 50P footage, has it just left it as is or applied frame blending or optical flow.
I would hope it has just left the 50fps as is, this footage looks great in its raw conformed state. This is why I got the camera.
As for import - hopefully Panasonic or somebody will bring out a plug-in to deal with this in a more direct way.

Reviving this old thread as I have the same issue - although I now think it may be a non-issue. In FCP7 I was very used to sending 50p clips to Cinema Tools to reconform to 25fps and get very smooth slowmo. I expected the same in FCPX but better - given that reconform is now built-in. However, it doesn't appear to do anything (as this thread says). So far so bad - until you look at 50p (or 60p) footage slowed down to 50%. It's just as smooth as I ever got with the CT reconform approach, and in fact it seems to be identical. I've tried reconforming a clip in CT and then watching the same clip (unreconformed) in FCPX slowed down to 50%. There's zero difference to my eyes.

Very hard to say at this stage. What is it you're trying to do? Do you want to listen to audio through speakers or a hi-fi? Do you want to transfer audio files to a different medium? Do you want to record audio from your MacBook to a recording device? You need to give us more to go on!

AVCHD footage to DVD in FCP - best output options?

Hi - I've been importing AVCHD files from my Panasonic HDC-SD1 camera into Final Cut Pro 6.0.2 Using the Log and Transfer to get the files in works like a charm, editing them is no prob. However, when I export the files and view them on a large screen, the footage looks pretty low quality, especially when I do any slow-motion moves (it gets stuttered) or when there is a lot of movement onscreen, it just looks BAD.
There are a lot of choices for how to export my film, and I'm clueless as to which is best. Hoping to get some advice on here. Thus far, I've tried exporting it as a QT .mov file, and I've also tried using Compressor, but there are so many output choices and I don't know which will work best.
In terms of "Log and Transfer" import, I've been using AVCHD - Apple Intermediary Codec. I tried switching it to "AVCHD - Pro Res 422" but it won't let me import that way.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated! I'm starting to worry that the "3CCD broadcast footage quality" camera I thought I bought is lower quality than I expected...

The term "broadcast quality" gets thrown around a lot in the marketing business. And while footage from all across the quality spectrum might be broadcast on one network or another (especially the cable networks), the camera you listed is far from what those in the industry would call "broadcast quality." But even more so than that, the format the camera records in is definitely not broadcast quality.

Obvious ? Want *best* output for DVD - what do I choose?

OK - this seems rudimentary but I've been on iMovie '08 for about 4 months now and it's still not obvious. I am shooting video footage on my Panasonic DV Camera - it's a great quality. I was under the assumption that I can import into iMovie without losing any quality, edit clips and keep same quality (and I'm not changing any color, audio, or cropping, etc - just clipping out some images, adding transitions), then export in same DVD-ready quality. I want to take the footage and put onto a DVD to watch on a TV.
So, why doesn't that seem obvious? I can't really find the right export. It's cramming down size to 640 x 480 and setting quality at medium. Using H.264 is a compressor - and if I want a DVD, I'd prefer it not to be compressed since it's going to be converted to a MP2, right?
Am I missing something? What do I use to Export at the same pristine quality in which I brought it in to then use on a DVD (and I mean shown on a SCREEN big viewing)?
I hate to commit "apple blashphemy" but when I used Roxio Media Creator or Adobe Premier Elements on my PC, the video was of better quality. I have Final Cut Express and maybe the answer is to spend about 40 hours learning it better because I much preferred the ease of iMovie for quick footage. But, I can't stand the end product looking worse.
Seems like iMovie is fine if I want to shove into a smaller-visual-size, poorer-quality video for MobileMe or email or YouTube but not keeping the quality I bothered to take? (And, even with the latter, the quality is poorer when I do a side by side of video footage from my dig camera - canon powershot s5 is - from straight out of the camera AVE vs pulled into iMovie, added transition, uploaded).
I know there are many of you that are professional videographers out there and can still make iMovie work in your flow for short, quick projects - am I completely missing something here?

p.s. To establish - I am using DV tapes an importing directly. I also have an ADVC-300 for bringing in analog. I am not messing around with anything during capture.

I'm going to have to disagree with the other poster here. I don't think iMovie 08 is touching the DV format as it's captured/edited. It may be using a method of changing the display, by only displaying a single field (as your screen is progressive, the 2nd field is kinda irrelevant unless it's an interlaced display.)
I do promise to go back to Muppet Labs and test this at some point this week.
On the other hand, the real problem is to "share" the work, iMovie is converting it into h.264 format...and then iDVD is converting it to MPEG-2 format.
To work around this, is pretty simple: Export using Quicktime:
For the Video, change your compressor to DV/DVCPro; the footage is interlaced, the quality slider is useless on the DV codec.
Change your audio to 48k 16 bit stereo.
These match the incoming DV footage, and should export it out 'untouched' for iDVD to make an MPEG-2 file from.

Best Output to HDTV and Computer?

I just got a Micro four thirds cameras that takes 720 HD movies in avi besides regular stills in 12mb. What is the best Share output when I want to play on an HDTV? (I have a 1080 but do not have a Blu-ray burner in my computer; only a DVD burner)??

Alan, are you using a camera like the Panasonic Lumix GF1? That camera records video in one of the following formats: AVCHD-Lite or Motion JPEG.
I think what Alan is attempting to do it to burn the AVCHD Lite files onto a standard DVD and playing back 720 HD resolution on certain BluRay players such as the Sony Playstation's BluRay.
That said, I don't believe Alan's Premiere Elements version 4 supports AVCHD editing or burning and the improvement in quality you may be seeing Alan could be the upconversion to near HD quality that most BluRay players will do with standard definition material.
I think you are correct though that AVCHD footage can be burned to standard DVD's and played back in 720 HD resolution on certain BluRay players.
I'm rather out of my depth on high definition so Steve or John, please feel free to step in and correct my info if it is incorrect.

Best Output for DVD from FCP???

I'm a newbie and need help. I was outputting from FCP 6.0.4 using Export > QuickTime Movie, then importing that file into DVD Studio Pro. But, a college student who saw it recommended Exporting using Compressor 3.0.3 which I did using the DVD: Best Quality 90 Minutes. I noticed an improvement in my DVD quality, however, in every program I've tried and retried so far I get a little short segment (about a 10 second portion) in my half hour long program that all of the sudden goes crazy with distortion and pixelization and image irratic jumping movements. What can I do to create a totally smooth video when going from FCP to Compressor or is there a better way to finally get it into DVD Studio Pro? I want the highest quality solution as the video footage is originally HD. Thanks for your help, Desperate Russ

The advice is more or less sound but you have several unnecessary steps. Your idea is to consolidate all of the FCP timelines and their associated media into a single timeline; you are nesting the project.
Forcing everything to render is good.
Export the entire project as a self contained movie.
Import the self contained movie into DVDSP.
You would perform these steps with each of the individual movie clips you want to have as menu items in your DVD project. Maybe. You might be able to use one single large movie and set go-tos for each chapter. Whatever.
But there is no reason to restart your computer.
And there may be no good reason to use Compressor to create the MPEG2 files.

I wonder which way is the best result to output the video to beta tape for TV broadcasting. I used firewire to DV but once the TV station dup to beta, the picture gettin worst.

On a more serious note...
I searched around for a beta sp deck that takes fire wire in and could not find one.
It strikes me that if you (Cantonpro) are already using an iMac you are either sharing the firewire bus, or placing media on your system drive. As noted, neither of these situation are recommended.
However, if you are on the system drive, then an AJA IO might be a possibility, but almost $2000 plus deck rental seems a bit steep, especially since the capabilities of the AJA would be limited by the iMac. Maybe a higher end canopus converter like this one,

but you are still talking almost $1500 plus deck rental. This solution is a bit more appropriate if you plan on staying with the iMac.
There are less expensive options that rely on composite video, but then you may as well have the station do the conversion.
Maybe you should contact a local dub house and see what they have to say, or find out if anyone near you has this equipment already.
Or, if your work is generating profit, and your business would benefit from the higher quality on-air, start to upgrade your hardware so you will see greater returns in the future.
