Panasonic SD900 5.1 sound in FCP X

I have been importing into FCP X from my Panasonic SD900, everything works great except that the 5.1 sound is converted into 2 channel stereo. Anyone know how to solve the problem? It could be a bug?
Interestingly, I have found a work around, first import the footage into FCP X, detach and delete audio, I then use Aunsoft MTS Converter to convert the MTS files to Apple ProRes 422 and reimport these into FCP X, from these files I  detach the audio and delete the video. Its then possible to combine the video and sound again (without video quality loss).

OK, this may be a bit odd, but I just solved my problem!  At least for practical purposes.  For those who might run into this same problem, here's what I found:
I have an Apogee Ensemble and noted that I was, indeed, getting audio (at least visually) from the Timeline clip as demonstrated by the volume light flashing on channel 3 of the Ensemble.  This was visual only since I was only monitoring stereo output from channels 1 and 2 and could not hear channel 3.
I went to the Inspector to check both the Event Clip and the Timeline Clip.  I clicked the Audio Tab.  In both the Event clip and the Tilmeline clip, the audio was properly noted as:  "Four Mono" (because that's how the HPX170 records---in 4 channels).   For some reason (which I still don't understand) the audio from the Event clip played fine.  But he audio from the clip in the  Timeline was silent (that is, no output through channels 1 and 2)..
Selecting the Timeline clip, I then clicked on "Channel Configuration" in the Inspector.  That gave me the option of switching from "Four Mono" to "Stereo."  This obviously then routed the signal to the channels 1 and 2 of my Ensemble so I could not monitor them.  Problem solveed!
Again, I don't know why the audio of the Event Browser clip was properly routed in "Four Mono" mode when the audio of the Timeline clip was not (while in the same mode).  But by switching the Timeline clip to "Stereo" it was fine.
One small step for man, one lightly larger step for mankind, in the New FCP X World!
Cheers,
Rob

  • Slow Motion sound from FCP doesn't get sent?

    Hi,
I recently sent a segment of my FCP movie top STP and found that footage I'd reduced to 50% speed is imported as empty sound files or in one case a different part of the audio track. Has anybody else experienced this? The FCP file is fully rendered (and that's all that I could imagine being wrong). Anybody know what's going on?
    Thanks
    Powermac G5 Dual 2.7   Mac OS X (10.4.4)

Yeah, had this one myself. Soundtrack pro doesn't except Slowmo... it's a later version thing i suppose. only work around i've figured is exporting your slow mo as quicktimes and re-importing to FCP. then STPro will recognise them. there's a little more on this in the manuals.

  • Popping sounds in FCP when importing from itunes

I'm trying to use a piece of music dwonloaded from itunes. listening ot the piece on itunes there are no "pops" or crackle sounds. Once imported to FCP and incerted inot my track it has annoying pops, suttle but they are there. How can I fix this?

Music purchased through iTunes won't work in FCP. Because of rights issues.  You need to get the rights to use the music in certain projects.  While your project might not be for broadcast, or displaying on the web, Apple assumes it is.
You cannot just use any old music you want in projects you put up on the web and on TV. You need to get the rights to it.  YouTube will even pull your video down if it finds popular music and detects rights issues. If this is a family video not aimed at the web, well...that's different.  But still Apple prevents working imports due to the fact that FCP is PROFESSIONAL software, and most uses for it is for broadcast and web.

  • How ro export small (compressed) files (.mpg) with sound from FCP or compr.

I have some dv pal footage that I need to store in in very small files. Then I need to convert it back to dv, for editing.
The quality (regarding artefacts and all that) is not important. The stuff was ripped from DVDs originally and are only to be used as reference.
Can I export an .mpg file with sound muxed into it from FCP or Compressor?
    H.264 produces to big files.
    Thanks for any replyes:)

    Hm, what a weird workflow.
I presume you are trying to edit with this stuff in FCP, so my question is, If you are grabbing media off DVDs, and converting with MPEG Streamclip or some such thing, and then trying to down-rez to edit with proxy footage, how do you plan to use timecode to reconnect to the high-res media when your cut is done?
h.264 can produce to big files or small files, depending on the settings of the file you tell it to produce to.
Consider that the amount of time you would spend converting media back and forth to low-res formats of lousy quality could be much more valuable than the cost of a firewire drive which you could use to convert your DVDs directly to DV, which you will find much easier to work with.
Hope this is helpful to U

  • Panasonic z-10000 work flow for FCP?

I can only get one (not 2) video strams to download.  Any ideas?
    Thanks

I'm having the same issue.  Unfortunately, the only options I've come up with are:
    1.  Convert your footage using Cineform (after doing parallax adjustments and such).  Then edit in FCP.  Problem with this is:  if you shoot 100 clips and in the process of editing decide you're only going to use 10, you just spent time adjusting and exporting 90 uneeded clips from Cineform.  Huge waste of time.
    2.  Edit in Sony Vegas.  This is a Windows only program.  I just installed windows on my mac (using boot camp).  Apparently, Sony Vegas is the ONLY video editing program that nativly handles 3D AVCHD (MTS) files.  Problem is:  I haven't gotten it to work without major lagging and drop out issues.  *****.  Apple needs to step up and start dealing with 3D.  Also, I think it's shameful that Panasonic hasn't created a plug-in for video editing softwares to handle their footage.
Let me know if you come up with anything better.  I'm pulling my hair out trying to deal with this.  Best of luck.

  • How to arrange audio clips to create 5.1 surround sound in FCP?

I've been searching for information about this in the documentation and search engines but so far no luck, so I decided to ask this.
I want to use FCP (not Soundtrack Pro, because I don't think it's "overkill" at this point), to mix audio recordings with videos from a shoot. Here is the situation:
Video and audio were recorded with separate equipment, I have:
Video recordings (audio will not be used)
Voice in stereo recordings of the above video shots in question
    Music in stereo
Currently I have the recordings layed out in FCP tracks as follows:
    Channel Content
    1 Music left +0db
    2 Music right +0db
    3 Voice left +0db
    3 Voice right +0db
    4 *Not used*
    5 Music left -10db
    6 Music right -10db
    So here are my questions:
Voice was recorded in stereo, do I put them on two channel 3's or do I need to downmix them to a single mono channel and put them on a single channel 3 track?
Do I need to -10db for the music used in channels 5 and 6? They are the same exact tracks used in channels 1 and 2.
Do I need to + or - the db of channel 3?
I am sending this to compressor to output in AC3 5.1 surround for DVD.
I have done this already and it sounds okay, but is there anything I overlooked or am I doing anything wrong?

    Shane Ross wrote:
FCP is a video editor, not designed to mix 5.1 surround.
Like its rival, Avid MC, it is only really designed for 2.0 audio mixing - and fairly poorly at that (although Avid have made some improvements in this regard with MC5). Neither have bussing for example.
For a very good audio editor, that does video not so well, you have to transfer to the PC side of your mac and try out Sony Vegas.
Currently Avid DS is probably the best combined picture and sound editor - and that is dying through neglect.
If you have to stay within FCS then, as Shane says, laying out your audio in a way that makes sense when you roundtrip to STP will be your best option. Then do your panning and balancing from within there. Do be aware that most people will monitor a stereo (or mono) downmix of your 5.1 - so mix accordingly.
    Anyone using PPro / CS5 with 5.1 ?

  • HELP PLZ Importing stereo sound into FCP brings it in mono and not linked!?

Hi, I am needing to import some sound which is stereo. On the flash card it came on I have channel 1 and channel 2...now being primarily a avid editor im used to selecting the both clips and it links together to make one when imported. I have found when I import these into FCP it brings them up as seperate mono tracks...I need them to be linked as i'll be doing multiclips for A and B cameras....
Also in my tracks section it says 2A for both audio tracks...Is there something im missing or I need to do in order to get it to work.
    Thanks for the help

Hi, could you be more specific? I have tried marking in points on both channels 1 + 2 at the clapper board...I then dropped them onto the sequence separately and then selected that...then did the Stereo pair thing...however its not doing it...what is it im doing wrong?
Sorry to be pain...its all a little alien to me at the moment...

  • Panasonic DVX100a NTSC DV video camera FCP Settings

I used a Panasonic DVX100a for the first time. I shot 30FPS Progressive. I was wondering if anyone knows what the appropriate setting I should use in FCP to digitize and edit only the progressive frames. I ask because when I digitized using the standard FCP Basic DV NTSC setting the logging info told me that the footage was lower field dominate. If it is progressive shouldn't there be no fields?
On a side note I have heard in the past that DVX100a's sometimes have an audio sync problem. Is this true and if yes what is the work around.
Thanks in advance to anyone who can help.
    Cheers,
    Mike Kroesen

Me neither but it's been reported since the first version was new and apparently was enough of a problem that Apple wrote that sync tool and included it on the first version of FCP 4.
I capture regular NTSC and 30p with my JVC vtr and as the darn thing doesn't read the pulldown flags, if I have 24p or 24pa and wanna work in 23.976 fps, I log with the JVC and and then do a one pass capture with the camera. No shuttling, no reversing, just pass the tape, no worse than taping. By the time I'm ready to replace that erstwhile camera, tape will be long gone and P2 cards or whatever will be as cheap as SD cards are now.

  • Panasonic DVX100a 24p vs 30p in FCP

Hi, I am renting 3 Panasonic DVX100s to video a ballet performance in April. I rented on this weekend to use so I can learn about it.
I don't see any difference between 24p and 30p. Is there any difference in FCP?
Would there be any significant difference between the two when shooting a ballet?
    Thank you for any advice.

Keep in mind, 24p on the 100 is one thing... 24p on a sequence is something else. 24p does NOT mean 24 frames per second when shooting with the dvx. 24pA does (with added step).
I guess my thought would be to test it out at a rehearsal and see what you really want.
Do you want Franco Zeffirelli or do you want the irreverent Peter Sellers (the director, not the actor).
Make sure you really understand what that camera's choices are and how you can use them to your advantage.

  • Panasonic tm900 in 24p mode in FCP

I already have a Canon T2i, but need a second camera for portability and "run & gun" as I am often too involved in the action I'm covering (usually church-related events.)
I've had success with 24p editing timeline with the DSLR. But I'm confused about shooting 24p in the newer camcorders, such as the Panasonic HDC tm900. Some say it's not "real" 24p, but uses pulldown instead. The bottom line for me is, when I import the footage into FCP, is it recognized as 24p and will it play nicely with the T2i? I need to make the purchase very soon. Thank you for your help.

You want to know what this camera shoots. Have you tried Google? This is a question for a camera forum or a Panasonic forum. Find out if the camera shoots true 24fps. It's got nothing to do with FCP.

  • Panasonic AG-HSC1U compatibility w.FCE/FCP or i movie08 ?

on some reviews of this camcorder it is stated that it works fine.
    true or false?

CLick on UNDERDOG and read my blog. I talk heavily about working with the HVX-200 and intermixing the footage shot with it and the Varicam. It works with FCP rather flawlessly. Many of the features are tied to the P2 card, such at 23.98 24PN...24 real fps opposed to pulldown removal. If you use the firestore HD with this, you cannot use that feature. Also, the firestore breaks your footage into 2GB chunks as it is formatted fat 32, so when the chunks are re-assembled there are small 2-5 frame gaps. A fix is in the works, and this isn't consistant behavior.
The HVX-200 shoots DVCPRO HD, which is a 4:2:2 colorspace as opposed to the JDV HDV format which is 4:2:0. Plus, the HDV format is virtually unkeyable, suffers from motion artifacts when fast motion occurs (most notably the blurring of the objects opposed to nice clean pictures).
I cannot recommend that camera more highly over ANY HDV camera. But mind you, the P2 workflow isn't for every production. There are many instances where I'd suggest the HDV cameras over the HVX because of what is being filmed and the workflow needed.
    What will you be shooting?

  • Sound in FCP - Questions about MP3

    Hi
Which is the best way to convert MP3 to AIF file ( 48HZ & 16 bt) ?
(The sound that i am using in my project, i have it only in MP3 it's specific and i can't change it.)
Write now i make it with Adobe Audition CS6 - is it OK? or its best to do it with  Compressor? The quality is the same or not?
I am asking all of them because my project  export sound is  on 5.1 (for DVD)  and for the music  i put every file  to Pan Mode to Stereo Left/Right in order to have better perfomance but when i do that the music sounds very low!! The rest of the sound(effects etc..) its sounds very good!!
Do i have other solution? or i am making something wrong?
    Please give me your guideness......
    Thank you!!!!

Don't know about that. Good conversion to AIFF should be identical. I don't use Audition but I've never had a conversion lose sound level.

  • WILL FCP 7 Recognize older camcorders like Panasonic PVGS120 for capturing?

I wanted to find out if FCP 7 has the ability to read all older camera models. If I can upgrade to FCP 7 (for under $300) and my old camera (Panasonic PVGS120) can be recognized by FCP software/drivers then I will not need to go out and buy a new HD camera just yet. Can anyone confirm this? The Panasonic PVGS120 was a gift and did not come with a driver for mac only PC/Windows. Right now I can not capture my footage onto my mac via fire wire & camera. I have to transfer my tapes to a friends HD camera to be able to import and capture my footage. If not I'll just have to break down and get a new HD camera for footage and importing, either way it's a win-win. PLEASE HELP!!

I own this camera, I just did a test and it works fine with the newest FCS.
All should be well for you!
