Panasonic tape in a sony deck?

I shot footage on Panasonic tape (miniDV) in a Panasonic AGDVX100. Will I have playback difficult in a SONY deck - specifically DSR11 or DSR40? I am outputting via firewire from one of those decks to a DSR 45 - dubbing from DV to DVCAM.
if so, do I need to acquire the shooting camera to output.
(shot at 29.97 NDF) (and some DF)
thank you!

Folks,
thanks for your answers regarding the mixing different brand stock/decks...
Nelson --
Thanks for your totally ridiculous question. Yes, of course... I shot at DF and NDF because I thought that would make things easier in editing.
My DXV100 malfunctioned a couple time during the course of shooting 60 hours of documentary footage in some pretty dusty environments, and miraculous slipped into DF somehow mid-tape on a rare occassion, despite a setting of NDF. It's hard to get your camera repaired when your in a 3rd world country in South America.

  • How do I transfer mini dv tapes from a Sony videocamera to my macbook?

How do I transfer mini dv tapes from a Sony videocamera to my macbook?  Issues are: my macbook has no hdmi port, no firewire port, and Sony does not support streaming USB between its mini dv tapes and Macs.
Only available ports on my macbook
I've been told I need an "external firewire capture card" to basically give my mac some semblance of firewire ability.  But no one so far can tell me definitively 1) what product to purchse and 2) that it actually works.
I have had some tapes converted by Costco to dvd but those do not work - they are in an uneditable dv format.  I want to import the tapes to digital format in order to edit and create new video from them.
    Thanks!

If you have tried all the Google search suggestions including the YouTube tutorials, then it's time to contact Sony tech support.  Or post in the iMovie forum area.

  • Conflict between Macbook pro and Sony deck GV D1000

When editing with Final Cut, my Macbook Pro intermittently loses site of my hard drive which is plugged into the 800 firewire port. When this happens the computer hangs up completely and can only be powered off manually (by holding the button down).
The Apple engineers said that it is because of a conflict with the Sony deck which is also plugged into the computer!!!!!!!! The Sony deck is plugged into the 400 port. Is anybody else having this issue? If so, has anyone out there found a solution?
    Thanks,
    Rhonda

Usually, regardless of how many FireWire ports you have, their is only one FireWire bus.
Sometimes cameras can grab the bus and block it for other devices. Canon are notorious for this.
In Log & Capture, go to the Capture Settings tab. Change the Device Control setting to FireWire Basic.
You might also try "daisy chaining" the camera by connecting it to the second port on the drive.
The best solution is to purchase a FireWire equipped Express Card. This will create a second bus.

I want to transfer my hi 8 video tapes from my Sony AF CCD  camcorder. I read that my mac mini supports some tape camcorders and to use the fire wire

If you can get hold of a Canopus ADVC-55 it requires no extra software and will feed digital video into your Mac. There are a few in Amazon UK but it's a fairly old device - I've used one for some years now - and I don't know what the general availability is.

  • Panasonic Af-100 and Sony D7 in same timeline, motion artifacting

I'm cutting a piece together that has footage shot with both the Panasonic AF100 and the Sony D7. I got the footage from the AF100 first so I set my timeline up for that camera. Any of the footage from the D7 that that has pans/camera motion seems to have motion artifacting when cut into this timeline. Any tips on how to address this? media converter, timeline settings? I've used lots of different footage from different sources in the past and not had this problem, but I've never done a project using both of these cameras at the same time. Thanks for any help.....

Indeed.  Also could be some of the CMOS roll on the D7.  Do those shoot interlace?  Not sure they would.  But maybe that is what you are seeing?
As Shane says, frame rates need to match too or FCP will shove one into the other and it might not look right.  Would look great in the viewer, but not so much in the canvas.

  • FCP and Panasonic AF-hvx-200 & SONY Z1

I am considering buying a Panasonic AG-HVX200 and was wondering if there are any compatibility issues with using it my current workflow with FCP 5. Currently I am shooting with a Sony Z1 HDV camera and Im shooting in HDV mode and then downconverting that into a SD DV-Pal Comp. I realize that the Panasonic is a different format, I was just wondering if I can combine the two different footages from the two cameras in a single sequence or do they require separate seqences? How can I export the final sequence using these two different types of footage? Any Help would be appreciated.

You don't route thru the deck at all. The only connection you have to the deck is firewire...for capture and output. Unless you want to capture at a different codec like DVCPRO HD, then you connect to the deck via the component cables, or HD SDI if the deck sports that (which I doubt it does).
Monitoring is done thru the card...typically on an HD monitor, but it can downconvert to an SD one as well. But if you want to do any sort of color correction and see what it REALLY looks like, you need a professional HD monitor. One from Best Buy won't do. But that is for like broadcast work. Getting an HD monitor to see generally what your image looks like is a good idea. You will need to get one that has Component or composite connections. Or, if you get the MultiBridge Extreme, it has a DVI out that you can then use another Apple 23" or Dell 24" monitor for viewing.
The Intensity is good for going to TVs with the HDMI connection, and capturing from cameras that have HDMI out (not many do).

  • Ingesting HDV from a Sony deck for archiving

I bought a Sony HVR-M15AU for the purpose of ingesting all my HDV tapes onto hard drives for later editing. I have never used FCP but intend to train on it soon. At this point all I want to do is get everything on hard drives. The deck is connected via FireWire 400. Not sure what to do next. I want to preserve the original quality of what's on tape. Ideally every scene could be a different file.

I understand compression, sorry if the zip analogy confused you. Zip is lossless, that's the only real difference. Other than that, they're simply different compression algorithms. I brought it up in the context of wondering if the MOV format is simply a wrapper, and you confirmed that it is.
When playing an HDV tape in a camcorder, the output via the HDMI port is uncompressed. This gives you an identical picture with a higher data rate and bit footprint for the purposes of display compatibility. I was trying to verify whether FCP also decompresses the HDV datastream before storing it. You indicate FCP does this "natively" which I assume means it uses the HDV stream without decompressing and recompressing it.
So when I capture HDV and I wind up with an MOV file that is roughly 200MB in size for every minute of video, you're saying this is exactly how it was stored on tape and has not been uncompressed. A 60-minute HDV tape therefore has an estimated capacity of around 12GB. A 2TB drive would therefore hold about 166 of those HDV tapes.
The HDV MOV files can then be stored as clips to be used in future FCP projects, and can be imported into FCP natively and edited natively without further decompression/compression and final output can result in HDV MOV files which are identical in quality to their originals, assuming no titles or effects have been added. True?

  • Final Cut Studio 6 and Sony Deck HVRM15U

Is Final Cut Studio 6 compatible with the Sony HVRM15U deck. NTSC Format connecting to Mac with Firewire and recording back to tape from Final Cut.

I bought the HVR-M15U Deck last week but I am having difficulty understanding the Menu settings. I intend to transfer HDV video (mini-DV tape) from the deck to FCP and then from FCP out to the Deck on a full size DV tape. I have connected firewire directly to the computer (no 3rd party capture card) and FCP tells me that my device capture pre-sets are wrong. I used Easy Set-up for HDV. Is there something I need to do with the Deck's menu setting so that I match up with FCP? Also I tried capturing from the deck to imove 08. imovie does control the deck but I get no image in the imovie capture screen on import. Anyone used the deck with imovie 08?

  • Unable to import video from Sony deck

I've been using FCE HD3.0 for well over a year with excellent results. I got tired of wearing out the heads on my camera using it to access footage so I broke down and purchased a Sony HVR-M15U editing deck. I'm able to control the device from the desktop quite well. However, every time I click the "capture now" button to import video, I get a gray screen overlaying the desktop and at the bottom it says "Allocating disk space" and my external drive(which has plenty of space) whirs for at least 3-4 minutes, after which I get another message stating, "Waiting for timecode. Device must be in VTR mode when device control enabled." This despite the fact that underneath the viewer, it states "VTR okay." I haven't been able to import a thing. Any ideas? I'm using OS10.4 with iMac G5 with Power PC chips. Thanks.

    G'Day Dan,
    Have you upgraded to 3.0.1?
Os 10.4 what? There was trouble with 10.4.9.
Does the deck have a Master/Slave setting?. Switch to Slave mode if so.

  • Help - HDV tape import problem - Sony HC-3 broken - Questions/Warning

My Sony HC-3 HD camcorder has just failed. I've had it just over 3 years.
I really don't enjoy video editing much, and despite maybe shooting 20-30 tapes of HD footage of my young children, I'd only got round to importing a handful over Firewire, but was lulled into a false sense of security perhaps by treating the tapes as my film negatives (new tape each time).
The camcorder behaved a bit erratically a few weeks ago when inserting a tape, then the other day it gave an error, I ejected the tape and had a constant C32:11 error flashing. Lots of user reports on the web, no idea what the real issue is, but any suggested fixes didn't work.
Essentially I cannot close the tape transport compartment with or without a tape - it won't accept a tape and return to record/play position.
Almost feels as though something isn't clicking/catching when you push the tape in.
Anyhow, I thought if worst comes to worst I'll just buy Sony's latest model - then the realisation they'd discontinued consumer HDV tape camcorders. Not a happy bunny.
I've sent camcorder to local Sony repair center and am awaiting outcome.
    Now my questions are:
1 - Is there any way of simply reading the tape data using an SD camcorder if I ever needed to ? - There are programs that use them to archive data so I guess in theory it must be possible just to read the data, unless it's stored in an SD compliant file format rather than just data.
2 - is 1080i HDV (1440x1080 res) as captured by the Sony HC3 a cross-vendor format or Sony specific - (if 1 is impossible) could I if needed say pick up a Canon HDV camcorder and use that to import my video?
3 - are we to assume now that DV/HDV is dead as a consumer format despite it's better image quality compared to hard drive/memory card video codecs.
Hopefully Sony will repair my camcorder for a fixed rate charge - if they can't or won't what are my options for importing the video I've got on tape?
There are bound to be companies who'll do this for a fee if worst comes to worst, but I feel a bit annoyed with Sony for dropping support for the format after buying an expensive camcorder only a few years ago.
Even if it can be repaired, I'm not sure I'll want to continue using it if there's a risk of future failure and inability to import old tapes. Frankly I'm glad I've used the video function on my Canon 5D II a lot in the last year or so for quick video clips even if many are transiently OOF.
Yes, my fault for not importing the tapes immediately after shooting, but I'd assumed that I would be able to import the data well into the future evene if it meant a new device.

    Jeremy Hansen wrote:
HDV is not dead!!! Heavens, the pros laugh at AVCHD and hard drive based cameras. When you shoot on HDV tape, you have a backup.
Sony do still manufacture HDV pro camcorders of course - it's the early adopter consumer they've left in the lurch.
One of my original reasons for using tape was this automatic backup - silly of me not to routinely import tapes to Mac of course.
    To answer your questions:
    1. No, you can't read it with an SD camera. you are correct that it is just 12GB of data, but no software really knows how to go back and forth, so to speak. In case you care, there was an app years ago (I forget which) that could use a Dv camera as a 12GB backup drive. But practically, no.
Shame really seeing as it's just data - I'd used the Firewire SDK kit DVHSCap app to pull off 12-13GB m2ts files in the past which I felt would be ok for computer archival, unedited direct playback on PS3 and fairly quick to convert to AIC as needed for future editing purposes using a utility.
I did wonder if DVHSCap might be able to pull the data from an SD camcorder, but maybe the tape just would not play.
    2. HDV is HDV. If you had problems, pros would advise you to import with the same camera, or at least same brand. But, usually there are no problems. There shouldn't be, but occasionally there are.
I was hoping this was the case, great.
    3. Image quality is NOT better with hard drive based camcorders. In fact, most use a higher rate of compression than HDV. What is the advantage? A tape-based camera takes an hour to import and hour. Hard drive cams go faster. Some look great, but there is no advantage over HDV.
Yes, the only advantage of HD/card based camcorders is simpler import faster than real time, and I'd always been concerned with HD camcorders you'd have too many eggs in one basket if the HD failed in between imports to computer.
I own an HC-3, and you have to realize it was an early camera in the high-def market. I don't use it often (except as a secondary) because of its optics.
I've always found it produced pretty acceptable results - constantly amazed that 3-4 year old products get regarded as obsolete by manufacturers who just want you to buy the latest gadget.
    Here is my advice:
Get a Canon HDV camera. Use it to import your tapes, and enjoy its superior optics and color quality. Opinion? Yes, but I believe it.
I may consider that if repair fails - any model recommendations that would trounce the Sony?
    Cheers

  • Lost Firwire Output to Sony Deck after Updates

I just did my software update yesterday to 10.4.4 OSX and also updated Quicktime and ProApplication Support. Today, my Sony DSR-30 is recognized as an Unknown device in the system profiler and I have remote shuttle control through FCP5, but no video/audio in or out. I have tried the following:
    - Repairing permissions on HD
    - Deleting QT Receipts and re-installing (x2)
    - Trashing all FCP5 preferences
    - Looking for new Sony driver for DSR-30 (not available)
    - Attaching Sony PD-150 Camera to test Firewire I/O and IT WORKS...but when I re-attach to the DSR-30, no go.

#30 - Deck recognition after Tiger Upgrade:
    Shane's Stock Answer #30:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=1063600&#1063600
The credit for this goes to Bob Sidebotham:
I was just walked through a repair procedure by an Apple Care person, and it fixed my camera recognition problems (I have a Canon XL1 and sometime after installing Tiger, then 10.4.1, various patches (including Quicktime 7.1) and the latest Desktop Video patch, I've been unable to use the camera with Final Cut Express, and attempts to capture would result in a FCE crash).
The workaround is to download Quicktime manually, after removing the "receipts" which indicate that it is loaded. Specifically, I was told to do the following:
    1. Navigate to Library -> Receipts on your main drive (not from your personal folder).
    2. Remove all files of the form QuickTime*.pkg, where "*" is a version number. E.g. QuickTime600.pkg, QuickTime650.pkg, Quicktime700.pkg and QuickTime701.pkg. This simply tells your system that those packages are not installed.
    3. Go to http://www.apple.com/quicktime/downloads and click on the "download Quicktime" link. DO NOT USE THE AUTOMATIC UPDATE UTILITY. Download QuickTimeInstallerX.dmg. Double click this file (probably on your desktop) and then invoke the installer by double clicking QuickTime701.pkg.
    4. After your computer reboots, you should be able to restart FCP and see your camera.

  • Laying of to tape on HD cam Deck

does anyone know what i have to do in order to lay somethign off to tape on an HD Cam Deck using an AJA Kona card to connect?
    thanks

Get your sequence set up, make the appropriate connections, HDSDI, 422 remote, insert tape stock, after making sure the deck is set up for the format you're going to record stripe stock with appropriate time code, place deck in remote, initialize "edit to tape in fcp" type in the appropriate code and drag the sequence you want to print to the assemble window if you only striped enuff code to get started, or insert if you striped it all the way through. check your audio and video levels as the edit goes down. (assuming you've already mixed your audio and checked your video levels as you were editing.)

  • Importing tape material from SONY HDR-HC7e, blue screen

    Hi,
I get blue screen even though the cam and the iMovie are communicating.
I tried importing in FCexpress with no hassle.
Any ideas, what to do in iMovie?

    Hi
*Not knowing the origin to Your problem - General approach when in trouble is as follows.*
    • Free space on internal (start-up) hard disk if it is less than 10Gb should rather have 25Gb
    • Hard disk is untidy. Repair Permissions, Repair Hard disk (Apple Disc Util tool)
    • Garageband-fix. Start it, Play a note and Close it. Re-try (Corrects an audio problem that hinders iMovie)
    • Delete iMovie pref file - or rather start a new user/account - log into this and re-try
    iMovie pref file resides.
Mac Hard Disk (start-up HD)/Users/"Your account"/Library/Preferences and is named. com.apple.iMovie.plist
While iMovie is NOT RUNNING - move this file out to desk-top.
    Now restart iMovie.
    • Third party plug-ins that doesn't work OK (not relevant for iMovie’08 or 09)
    • Program miss-match. iMovie 5.0.2, up to Mac OS X.4.11 AND QuickTime 7.4.1 - is OK
    • Program miss-match. iMovie 6.0.3 or 6.0.4, Mac OS X.4.11 AND QuickTime 7.4.1 - is OK (might work under Leopard)
    • Program miss-match. iMovie’08 v. 7.0.1, Mac OS X.4.11 AND QuickTime 7.4.1 - is OK (might work under Leopard)
    • Screen must be set to Million-colors
From LKN 1935. (in this case = iMovie HD (5), I tried it all, but nothing worked.
Your answer (above) has been helpfull insofar as all the different trials led to the conclusion that
there was something wrong with my iMovie software. I therefore threw everything away and reinstalled
iMovie from the HD. After that the exportation of DV videos (there has not been any problem with HDV videos)
to my Sony camcorders worked properly as it did before.
    iMovie updated ?
    QuickTime updated ?

  • Why has FCP stopped recognizing my Panasonic DVX 100A and DV Deck?

I have been using FCP on my Macbook Pro for over 3 years. I recently installed iLife 11 and since then Final Cut won't log and capture either from my camera or my DV deck. The preview shows color bars but FCP will control the camera and deck. I have tried numerous setting combinations.
I can capture in iMovie without any problem.
Thanks in advance for any suggestions.
    Robert Allen

    Thanks for your answer.
I tried what you suggested. Still getting an error when I try to capture. I can see the preview image in the log and capture window when I hit the "now" button I get a message saying
"Attempt to Capture video without a video device selected. Please select a video device in your video capture presets and try again."
    Any thoughts?
Capture works fine in imovie 11.
