Panasonic Toughbook falling asleep and never waking up again

Hi,
I recently decided to replace CentOS 5.5 on my Panasonic Toughbook by a fresh install of Arch. Base system is configured OK, same for X11, and the minimal install of KDE4 is also functional. Now I'm working on sanding down the rough edges. First things first.
When I leave the laptop switched on, but unattended, the screen goes black, and there's no way to bring the desktop back. I have to hard-reboot the whole thing. I wonder if there's something missing in my install, but what? A curt pointer to the relevant documentation will do.
Cheers from France

Sorry for the late response, I was stuck in a french airport.
I managed to solve the problem. I have an Intel chipset too. I've been searching the wiki, and found out I had to use KMS to get my board working properly. There are some clearly explained entries on "Intel" and "KMS" in the wiki. I followed the instructions, and now, 3D acceleration as well as the screensaver work well.
Cheers from cold Austria

  • Airdisk falling asleep and not waking up

what i thought might be a partitioning error/issue might be another thing altogether... let's start from the top. lots of random details follow, but something might be the kicker.
i have an older AEBS (non-dual-band, non-giga-bit, circa 2007) in another room (garage -- with all of the other panels, switches, etc.) that distributes a signal to the whole house -- specifically to two airport express base stations (delivering music, printer sharing, etc.). the AEBS is sending out a G/N signal (for iphones, network cameras, etc.) and one of the expresses is sending out an N-only (for my macbook).
the purpose of the AEBS is three-fold. (1) to provide wireless connectivity (2) to serve as a conduit to a backup airdsk for (a) general computer/home theater backups and (b) a consistent repository for a network (security) camera feed fed through "security spy" via a mac mini (home theater hub) which is hard-wired to the network via whole-house ethernet (belkin hub in the garage ties it all together). the camera itself is wireless (G-speed).
over the past few weeks, i've been getting very poor throughput on the wireless network -- speed bumps back up (from <1bps to >20mbps) when plugged into the ethernet network (as viewed through speakeasy's speedtest).
ok. the issue is that the new 2TB lacie harddrive is going to "sleep" and not waking up. it works fine for about 1/2 hour after hookup or "hard" wake-up (restart AEBS/drive).
previously (as few as 5 weeks ago, i had a smaller lacie drive (1TB) serving the same function flawlessly.
so... is this new airdisk issue due to:
-- the AEBS not liking the 2TB size?
-- the AEBS giving signs of failure (esp. with the network issues noted above)
-- is the new lacie drive either (a) a DOA-failure or (b) doing its job by falling asleep (if so, it'd be a new 1TB>>2TB feature)...
    -- user error
    -- something completely random...
thanks for any wisdom you can lend...

I have pretty much the same setup with the same model AEBS and I get the same problem with a 2TB Western Digital drive plugged in. I solved this problem a month ago by updating my system to Snow leopard and updating firmware to the base station and rebuilding pretty much the whole network. But it came back this weekend. Is driving me crazy!
(Side note: I also use that drive as a wireless Time Machine backup but can only get it to work reliably with my wife's Macbook not my own- which actually worked for a weekend but then decided that was enough.)

  • Falling asleep and waking up to iPhone (alarm volume question)

I would like to both fall asleep and wake up to music on my iPhone. I know hot to do sleep the iPhone after a certain amount of time using the timer, but I like the volume way down so I can barely hear the music. The problem is that for my alarm in the morning, I need the music very loud. Is there some way to have the music soft when I am falling asleep and automatically get louder for my alarm in the morning? I'm not too hopeful on this, but maybe someone can help.
    Thanks,
    Colin

I believe your alarm tone volume is the same as your ringtone volume and has nothing to do with your music volume. You are not presently able to wake up to music.

  • Display falls asleep and won't wake when connected to new Haswell MBP

For over a year now I've used my 2007 Macbook Pro and my 2004 20in Cinema display together. I woud dock my macbook pro and just use my cinema display as my main display.
I attempted to do this with my brand new macbook pro today. Purchased a Mini Display port to DVI adaptor and I can get the display to appear on my the 20in Cinema Display, but when I close my laptop it falls asleep and so does the monitor. I've been able to wake it up for about 10 seconds but then it'll fall asleep again and I can't wake it up any longer.
Has anyone had a similar issue like this and is there a solution out there?

There is a world of information in these forums if you use the search function near the top right of this page. Just type in NAS for example and you get many threads on the subject (marked with a green checkmark if it solved the question) another example would be Airport Exterme and sound system. Once you formulate your ideas better then specific questions can be addressed one at a time. You may find that a less expensive choice for a server might be a mac mini. Good luck with your project, ask more specific questions and update you systems profile.

  • Macbook didn't fall asleep and the fan was running?

I closed my macbook this afternoon and expected it to fall asleep like every other time, but after getting back this evening, I noticed the fan was running as if it was hot, it wasn't asleep, and I had to reboot using the power button in order to get back into Mac OSX. What is going on here? Does this happen on occasion? Or do I need to take it in and get it fixed? This is the first time it has happened and I've had it for about a month and a half. Thanks for your info.

No. If something would have overheated, it would have shutdown completely, and the fan wouldn't have been running.
When your OS stops communicating with the hardware, the fan kicks in to protect the computer from catastrophic damage. Same with iMacs, Power Macs, etc. By running, it actually protected the MacBook. You should be fine.

  • Mac falls asleep and won't wake up

I need help fast diagnosing my Mac Problem!
Out of nowhere yesterday my machine started to automatically shut down and go into sleep mode without me touching anything or making any settings changes. The screen goes blank. The hard drive winds down but comes back to life once I click my mouse. This is now happening every few seconds and I cannot even run diagnostics before it shuts down.
It's a PowerMac G4 (Quicksilver with 5 hole front). About a month ago I upgraded to OSX Tiger 4.7 and was running fine with no problems.
I check energy saver and made sure it was set to 'never' for the sleep selection. I disabled my hot corners but it still keeps doing it.
I even unplugged the system and vaccumed out the dust from the fan grates thinking it was overheating and powering down as to protect from overload but still no go.
I don't know if this is software or hardware related issue or if I picked up a virus. I've never seen or heard of this problem before and can't find any info on it.
If anybody has any information or suggestions please respond here or email me at [email protected]

Try using Disk Utility to repair your startup disk (hard drive) as shown in Dr.Smokes Resolving Disk, Permission, and Cache Corruption as Archeeum so helpfully suggested (if it stays running long enough!). The link will show you how.
    Cheers!

  • USB 3 drive falls asleep and hangs system

I have a USB 3 drive and I notice that when accessing files on my internal drive (that is, not the USB 3 drive) it sometimes needs to wake up.  I hear it whirring up to speed and it takes about 5 seconds while the entire system hangs until it comes online and then everything goes back to normal.  This happens while I am already actively using the system.  Any idea why and how to stop this?
By the way, the drive was in a Lacie enclosure, but I moved it to a new USB3 enclosure myself.  It is listed in Disk Utilities as a SAMSUNG HD204UI.  It's 2TB and 7200rpm.  I also have a WD drive in another USB3 enclosure as a Time Machine backup.  It doesn't seem to be causing the issue.

Didn't know that this was a feature of USB specifically.  I actually took my drives out of FW enclosures and moved them to USB3 since that's so much faster.  When you refer to the do not sleep setting, I guess you mean in the Energy Savings settings where you have the tick box to "Put hard disks to sleep when possible".  I unticked that and it seems to be helping, so far!

  • Office 2013 64 bit get rid of WSD ports and never see them again

I have some users with enormous spreadsheets, so we upgraded to Office 2013 64 but (from Office 2010 32 bit). The OS is Windows7 64 bit.
We were working just fine with TCP ports for the printers. But Office 2013 64 bit installs WSD ports (not the trial version BTW, but as soon as you buy the full version it re-installs and messes up your printers)
How do I stop Office Pro 2013 64 bit from putting in these WSD port monitors. I don't need them. I just want fixed IP TCP ports.

  • Dual G5 falling asleep again ramdomly, need help!!!  DUAL G5 2.0gHz

I can't get any work done. I updated to the latest greatest OS that software update told me to do and now every time I try to work on anything processor intensive the computer fall asleep and I need to hit the escape key to wake it up. This will sometimes happen 2-3 times in one minute. I've posted on this problem several times in the last year and usually I've been able to get the machine running again. However this time nothing is fixing it. I've downloaded the combo update, trasted the ,plist files, reset the PRAM and cleaqned my cache, repaired permissions, booted from 10.4 install disc, run diagnostics, checked log files for thermal runnaway (never seen that one). Unfortunately this computer is about 3 years old now and all warantees and apple care have expired. It's had issues since the get go. I've had to replace the logic boar, case and one of the processors. I'm about to pay the 50 bucks and call apple but I was hoping that there would be a solution here first. Please help. My business is suffering...
    Joel

Try this again also. If you have issues with a Mac or display that goes to sleep at inappropriate times, you may have a problem with Energy Saver. Delete the following .plist files and restart:
    -/Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/com.apple.PowerManagement.plist
    -/Users/username/Library/Preferences/com.apple.systemuiserver.plist--
(username is your name or System Administrators name)
    -/Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/com.apple.AutoWake.plist
A restart is very important after deleting these plists. After a reboot your Mac will then generate new ones.
Some, in these forums, have had luck fixing sleep issues downloading the Combo update from this site (yours may be corrupt), not Software Update, disconnect all firewire + USB devices except keyboard + mouse, Repair Permissions, re-install update, Repair Permissions again + try.
Yours would be the 10.4.8 Combo update. Others reading, download the combo update that applies to you!
    Cheers!

  • G5 Randomly Falling Asleep

Seems my 2.7ghz dual PPC G5 tower running 10.5.8 sometimes falls asleep on it's own while I'm using it... I have to press the power button to wake it up - Bluetooth mouse and keyboard lose connection when this happens. I have set the Energy system prefs to 'never' fall asleep and it still does it.
I'm wondering if this is some kind of safeguard or something? Maybe I'm overheating? It's definitely not a case of staying idle too long. Seems to do it most when I'm using processor intensive software.
Can anybody tell me why this is happening?

    Get freeware Temperature Monitor.
    http://www.bresink.com/osx/0TemperatureMonitor/download.htm
What's going on when this happens? Are you doing something highly CPU intensive? I see you answered this.
Seems to do it most when I'm using processor intensive software.
Then that could be temp related.
Not sure about the G5 Tower, but just to get an idea, an iMac G5 CPU has to get up to 85C before it starts sleeping or shutting down.

  • How do I stop my external HD from falling asleep??? So, so Frustrating!!!!

    Hey Apple users
OK, I have a Seagate 500GB external HD formated with MAC OS Extended. This puppy is great, very dependable, only ONE issue...
After not using it for a few minutes, it falls asleep, and when it needs to be used, it takes an annoying 6 seconds to start up. Working with audio and having live samples that are stored on this HD, not having them playback for a few minutes (ext. HD then falls asleep), then playing back the entire project with these files needing immediate use, the software CRASHES because it can't access the data fast.
I have no room on my PowerBook HD for much at all. This also causes problems in iTunes, wanting to play a song after not touching iTunes for a few minutes (when not playing), iTunes freezes for some seconds until it can access the songs on the external HD.
SO SO ANNOYING, the internal HD takes like .01 seconds to access data. And this HD takes like a painful 6 seconds Ugh,
How can I keep my external HD awake ALL THE TIME, unless my entire Mac is asleep??
    Thanks!

Actually, this app. I mentioned above... HDriveAwake... is not a good idea,
it has many flaws, but it's decent software, just needs some improvements, main issue: consumes an incredible amount of RAM and Processing PWR while working.... (on my mac.. consumed 60+ %) & this is a bad thing if you use an EXTERNAL HD for stuff like audio/photo/video editing... I'm just going to get a Mac Pro G5 with like 4TB, I need it.... my bank account doesn't, but i do...

  • !!!DATA LOSS!!! Lion falls asleep, breaks active shared drives

Lion falls asleep and breaks active connection to shared drivers. This is from Snow Leapeord that is reading/writing to a drive being shared by Lion. If I don't have someone present, moving the mouse on the Lion machine, the connection will die a horrible death and any data reading/writing stops in its tracks. Nice?

    scarroll wrote:
My only compliant is STILL DATA LOSS!!! Networking between Snow Leopard (multiple machines) and Lion is highly unreliable. Connections still drop, resulting in half file transfers and complete DATA LOSS. This doesn't happen between Snow Leopard machines, only between SL and Lion. The fact that this happens at all makes Lion simply unworthy of use. My only work around thus far is to abandon Lion. It is simply not usable.
It doesn't happen between Snow Leopard and Lion either. Quoting http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1776 :
Note: Hard disk activity does not prevent display sleep, but it does prevent system sleep. It is not uncommon for the display to sleep before the system goes to sleep if both types of sleep are set to occur after the same length of inactivity.
