Question:
Programs used have been operating without any events. Can someone please explain the error, cause any required resolution?

I have had this same parentalcontrols kernel panic crash my system 4 times today--every single time I try to switch from my child's managed account to my own admin account. I can't seem to find anything on the discussions board that suggests a fix. Does anyone know if this bug will be corrected in 10.5.2? Or is there a workaround that doesn't involve turning off parental controls?
This kind of instability isn't what I'd expect from OS X.

  • How to switch to "Login Window" using cocoa?

From my cocoa application I need to programmatically switch user desktop to Login Window.
The analog of this function is "Login Window" item near the user list menu in the status area (Fast User Switching, Session switch).
I need this API under 10.6
    thanks!

    In the Terminal, type
    {code}/System/Library/CoreServices/Menu\ Extras/User.menu/Contents/Resources/CGSession -suspend{code}
So you just have to perform a system call to run this command.

  • Timeline Video Playback Glitches after going to login window.

Anyone else had this problem. When I leave the office, I click the login window button to stay logged in but protect my documents.
When I come back and begin to work in the timeline in FCP again, it just repeats a small section repeatedly as the audio still plays correctly. The timeline marker moves right and everything, but the video playback is glitching. I have to save and re-start FCP each time I log back in.
    -Josh

I've experienced the same thing. I find that if you enable all frames in video playback (cmd+F12) it fixes itself.

  • Sporadic crashes/kernel panics after switching to new mac

Hey everyone I'm really hoping that someone here can help me with a problem I've been having
In late December I accidentally water damaged my 2011 13' MacBook Pro, resulting in loss of keyboard function, however the computer was still workable. And I made do until the beginning  of March when I bought a second hand 2012 13' 2.5GHz MacBook Pro.
I put the ram and harddrive from my old MacBook into the new one, and everything worked fine....for the first 5  days
However I began to experience crashes(kernel panics?) where any number of things would happen...
Most commonly the computer would freeze,  briefly followed by an immediate reboot, followed by a error message saying something like "your computer restarted because of a problem"(after logging in)
It also presents as the computer freezing, with the sudden appearance of scattered purple/blue lines, and I am forced to hard reset. This is followed by the same error message as before.
I have also encountered problems with the computer not responding after being put to sleep(however this may have been fixed when I reset the SMC, hasn't happened for a while).
Does anyone have any suggestions as to things I could check or possible causes of this? Cause I have no clue.....
These problems have happened under all sorts of different conditions different,  work loads, ect.
I Also can't find anything difinitive in the console in regarded to any specific crash, and there's nothing consistent between them.
    Things I have done:
    -Reset PRAM/NVRAM
    -Reset SMC
    -Repaired disk permissions
    -Ran apple diagnostics
-Stress tested processor using "yes" command
    -Tested ram with memtest
Any thought you have would be greatly appreciated!
    ~P

  • ITunes doesn't recognise iPhone after switching back from Windows 7

    Hi all,
I've searched Google and this message board for this issue, but haven't found any mention of it.
    Here's the problem:
I have Windows 7 installed on a boot camp partition. Any time I switch into Windows 7 and then back to Mac OS X (latest version of Snow Leopard) iTunes (both 9 and 10) refuses to recognise my iPhone, meaning I can't sync or transfer any files to my iPhone 4.
The only way I've found to solve the problem is to reinstall iTunes, which is really not a good solution. Rebooting into OS X from OS X doesn't work either.
Has anyone else come across this issue and/or found a fix for it?
I don't use iTunes on Windows 7, or even have it installed (although I did try installing it to fix this problem, and that didn't work either)
    Any help appreciated!
    Thanks
    Paul

    Hello again, GiannisFromAthens.
At this point, considering that the primary issue is with getting the Windows update resolved, we need to get that taken care of first. To do so you may need to consult Microsoft, or whoever supports the installation of Windows on your computer, for more troubleshooting to resolve it.
Once that is resolved, if you are still experiencing the issue, you may find better information by using another of Apple's Support resources at https://expresslane.apple.com/GetProductGroupList.action for a more hands on response.
    Cheers,
    Pedro D.

  • GPU panics after Windows 8.1 install

    Hello all,
I am experiencing a "funny" issue though I am not laughing...
Am using a mid-2012 15" Macbook Pro with retina. The hardware is great and I have never had any issues with it. OS X just ***** - in so many ways - and this is my personal preference. I have had plans to install and switch to Windows 8 but never had the motivation. Now, as I recently upgraded to OS X Yosemite, got the dreaded WLAN dropping issue. It is just hilarious how unresponsive Apple has been to that problem... I also have a Macbook Air which has exactly the same issue so... Decided that it is now a perfect time to ditch OS X for good and switch over to Windows on both Macbooks starting with my Pro...
I prepared Bootcamp, Windows 8.1 install media... and did the Windows 8.1 install (still have OS X on another partition). Windows installed fine and worked OK: until I installed Bootcamp drivers. I suspect it is the NVIDIA graphics driver (installed by Bootcamp v 5.1.2) which causes Windows 8.1 to crash. The system may run for a minute or an hour. But, inevitably, it will crash to a black screen.
Now, the funny thing is, once Windows has crashed, it will no longer restart. System will die on Windows startup logo. It gets even funnier when I reboot to boot menu and choose to boot OS X. It crashes in the apple logo boot screen, too! So neither of the OS'es boot! Several boot attempts later (even did cmd+opt+P+R a few times) the OS X finally boots. And reports that there's been a GPU panic fault...
I have now repeated the above mentioned process (installed Windows 8 from scratch, installed graphics drivers, got Windows 8.1 to crash, got both OS'es to crash on boot, got OS X running again after several boot attempts, and - finally - OS X to report GPU Panic). Here I am, just laughing to myself hysterically... What the heck is going on?
I need to add that I have NEVER seen a GPU panic on this Macbook before. There has been absolutely no problems with the hardware - ever. And now, with OS X running again, there are no issues whatsoever.
So does the Bootcamp REALLY work with Windows 8.1 on this HW. And how the heck do I get rid of OS X for good?
    Jouko

Just to report back on this issue: solved, but not in the way I would have liked to see.
That friggin' Macbook pro got toast. In age of just 26 months. The GPU is fried. This first surfaced only when running Windows, as it
uses only the external NVIDIA GPU. At first there was no problem running OS X, as my use is not very GPU intensive and most of the time the integrated intel GPU was in use and it shows no problems. Now, a few weeks later, the black screen crashes are frequent in OS X too - whenever Nvidia is switched on.
I am so ****** off with Apple... Have left the Macbook for a "indie repair specialist" to solder in a new GPU. Should that fail the Mac goes straight into dumpster. Needless to say, will never buy another.

  • MacBook Pro - After Battery dies I'm not able to type in login window, until forcing a restart

Hi, as mentioned in the header : MacBook Pro - After Battery dies I'm not able to type in login window, until forcing a restart
After the battery drains to 0% the computer switches off.... *Makes sense*
Once I put the charger power chord back in for an extended period of time I hit the power button and then see the login screen.... *Makes sense*
However it won't let me type into the login box therefore having to force a restart and lose any saved data or data open when it died of battery. *WEIRD*
This happens every time my computer runs out of battery. I understand that obviously not letting the laptop die is a good idea, however it seems like there is something wrong as it allows me to login yet won't let me type anything...
Any solutions? Anyone else experience this?
I have an early 2012 MacBook Pro - 15 Inch Screen.

    Hi s4mboy,
Thanks for visiting Apple Support Communities.
I'd start with resetting the SMC and PRAM on the MacBook Pro:

  • Stuck in login window after upgrading to Mavericks

I am unable to login with my (admin) account after upgrading to Mavericks yesterday.
This was very unfortunate considering that I didn't backup my data !!
On reboot (I do not remember whether it was the first or second time) I couldn't login anymore as I usually did.
I tried different procedures (entering secure mode, repair permissions, reinstall 2 times Mavericks) but cannot solve the stuck.
Then I thought it could be a nice idea to create a new admin user and followed this instructions (http://www.hackmac.org/tutorials/how-to-create-a-new-administrator-account/).
After that I was able to login with the new user, I backed-up my data but I was still in stuck on login window with the old user.
    I tried to delete
         com.apple.loginwindow.plist
         com.apple.recentitems.plist
from /Users/XXX//Library/Preferences/ and tried to restart but nothing.
Now I wonder how my old and important user can start working again.
    Thank you very much.
    Giuliano

Restart and hold down the Command and R keys during startup.
On top, in the Menu Bar click the Utilities item then select Terminal.
In the Terminal window, type resetpassword and hit Return.
    The Password reset utility launches/
    Reset password.
    Restart

    Hmmm.  Maybe try this?

  • No keyboard at login window after logout

    Hello all,
I'm just starting state testing and have been presented with a problem.  When a student logs out of a machine in order to log into the testing account the login window won't accept input from the keyboard.
    Bacground and details:
We have labs of computers using workgroup manager and open directory for management.  In a normal lab the machine will boot to a login window.  This is so that the preferences will be refreshed before a student logs in.  The student will login as a local user (student) and procede to do whatever for the day.
We have recently started state mandated testing.  I have set up an OD account which is very locked down and keeps the student on track while testing.  This requires someone to log the normal user out and login as the OD user.  This is where the problem arises.
About 50% of the time the keyboard will no longer funtion after logout.  No keys of any sort work. The mouse still works.  Even keystrokes through ARD do nothing.  A end user is then required to reboot the system in order to do ANYTHING.  This is not ideal for elementary kids.
From my digging in log files and poking around i noticed that the loginwindow process was hanging or crashing.  If i kill the process the login window blinks and then works just fine.  I'm sure i could write a logout script that drops a process into the background to kill the loginwindow process after so many seconds, but thats messy.  Has anyone seen this?  Any thoughts or solution? Only happens on a logout, never on an initial bootup.
I have found that 95% of these issues occur on Mac Mini's.  I can consistantly replicate the issue on a mini.  If i clone the mini to a macbook, i no longer have the problem (using carbon copy cloner).  So either the hardware is part of the issue or the clone fixed something in the process.

In those cases there may be threads and/or processes trying to do things with windows that they don't own. In other words, some programmers may have goofed up a little bit someplace.

  • Kernel Panics at Login Window?

Ever since I installed Adobe CS2 a few months ago, I've had increasing numbers of kernal panics just as the machine reaches the login window. I thought it might be hardware related so I unplugged all usb devices except mouse and keyboard and my external Firewire 800 drive and my speakers. I'm still getting the panics, or I'm not getting past the grey screen, fans revving and cycling dial for 5 or more minutes.
I'm running the hardware test disk but it seems to be passing all hardware tests. Can this simply be a bad or corrupt system? I cannot log in now to deauthorize or deactive, so I'm planning to do an archive install and hopefully it won't mess up my CS2 and Macromedia ownerships.
Please respond quickly if you have advice, I'm checking mail often because I'm starting to get desperate. Using my PC for email, which i never do!
Oh, btw, when doing a safe boot, I see comm apple driver IOFirewire Serial bus prtocol has no kernel dependency. and a bunch of types of devices showing no kernel dependency. Would going from 10.4.3 to 10.4.5 install what I'm missing? G5 Dual 2.5 Mac OS X (10.4.3)

I bought a G5 Quad a month ago. Right from the start, a constant series of Kernel Panics. Took it back to dealer. They returned it to Apple. Apple sent dealer a replacement. Dealer tested it. 'Blew up' on workbench. Apple sent another. This was sent to me. Now, a week later, Kernel panics continue. Exactly as before. Have followed all the numerous pieces of advice in this forum and on Apple Support, etc, etc, to infinitum. Tomorrow I shall take the machine back to dealer.
Now I am wondering two very simple, very basic questions:
    (1) is there something wrong with these machines? There are SO MANY reports of issues like these.
    and
    (2) Why is it up to the customer to find out the answer to this question, having paid x amount of money? I am amazed at how generous Apple customers are to the company!

  • Stuck in a "loop" at the login window after upgrading to Leopard

I bought a new iMac Oct 26. It contained Tiger, and included a disk for installing Leopard. I easily got the machine up and running using Tiger, but last night I attempted to install Leopard. When the installation was complete, I tried to get it running. A screen asking for my password came up. I keyed that in and hit logon. Back came the screen asking for the password. To make long story short, I tried everything I could last night, and then called Apple Support this morning. Took quite a while, but I was back in business this afternoon. The technician who helped me sent me the email copied below describing the solution. Perhaps it will help someone else? Romelle
    Hello from Apple!
Charles at Apple Service & Support thought that you might find this article useful. We hope that it helps resolve your technical issue.

Mac OS X 10.5, iMac (Late 2007): Stuck in a "loop" at the login window after upgrading to Leopard
    Issue or symptom
After installing Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard on a 20-inch or 24-inch iMac (Late 2007) computer, you may not be able to log in at the login window. Your login name and password are apparently accepted, but after a blue screen appears for a few seconds, the login window reappears instead of your desktop.
    Products affected
    20-inch or 24-inch iMac (Late 2007) computer with 2.0, 2.4, or 2.8 GHz processors
    Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard
    Solution
    If Leopard is installed
Start up from the Leopard Install DVD and perform an Archive and Install installation (and select Preserve Users and Network Settings).
After the Archive and Install is complete, you should be able to successfully log in. Use Software Update to install any other updates.
Important: Install the iMac Software Update 1.3 for Leopard after the Archive and Install is complete.
If Leopard is not yet installed
If you have not yet installed Leopard on your 20-inch or 24-inch aluminum iMac computer with a 2.0, 2.4, or 2.8 GHz processor running Mac OS X 10.4.x, but previously installed the iMac Software Update 1.2, you should install the iMac Software Update 1.2.1 (Tiger) or later, before installing Leopard.
    Thank you,
    Apple

If Leopard came pre-installed and this is a new machne, then the disks that came in the box should let you archive install preserving users & network settings. The disks have a grey label, and if you get more than one use disk #1 for this procedure.
Hold down the "option" (also known as "alt" on the new keyboards) key when starting up with disk #1 in the optical drive. Select the install disk icon on the grey screen and click the arrow. Then when you get to the "select destination pane, click the options button after selecting your hard drive as the destination. In options A& I preserving should be checked by default, if not, select them. Click "ok" to dismiss the options pane, then run the installation.
If this does not work for you, call apple support. They want everything to work. Be patient, they are real busy these days.
