I'm really curious, so far I've isolated it down to the HDD, I've tried Data Migration using firewire, and Target Disk mode. Anything would help.

what is your mac OS version and your iMac model? The pre-2006 iMacs this forum covers have different troubleshooting steps from newer iMacs, so we need to make sure which you have. The non-intuituve forum labeling here means people with relatively recent iMacs are tricked in to posting here instead of a more active forum for iMacs made since 2006.

Bootup holding CMD+r, or the Option/alt key to boot from the Restore partition & use Disk Utility from there to Repair the Disk, then Repair Permissions.
One way to test is to Safe Boot from the HD, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, Test for problem in Safe Mode...
PS. Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive
    Reboot, test again.
If it only does it in Regular Boot, then it could be some hardware problem like Video card, (Quartz is turned off in Safe Mode), or Airport, or some USB or Firewire device, or 3rd party add-on, Check System Preferences>Accounts (Users & Groups in later OSX versions)>Login Items window to see if it or something relevant is listed.
Check the System Preferences>Other Row, for 3rd party Pref Panes.
Also look in these if they exist, some are invisible...

I put the disc in that it came with so I could see if a recovery file has come up but nothing.

  • Load of /sbin/launchd failed, errno 2 - CRT iMac

    Hi,
I've been working on my parents' iMac, which was booting to Darwin. I followed the instructions in another thread and booted to single user mode, and then did the /sbin/fsck -fy. This produced a massive stream of errors to be corrected - it went for pages and pages. I didn't write it down, because I didn't expect to be locked out, but it was lots of different errors. It seemed to be correcting things, but then it got to something about a directory or header file, and it stalled on the message **Look in the lost-found something something for the missing files**. At this point it died...I gave it some time, and when it was obvious nothing was going on, I hesitantly forced a reboot.
Now in a single-user boot I can't even get to a command prompt. I wrote down some of the last few lines displayed:
    BSD root diskOs5, major 14, minor 5
jnl: journal start/end pointers reset (some number strings in here)
    Load of /sbin/launchd errno2, trying /sbin/mach_init
    Load of /sbin/launchd failed, errno2
And that's where it stops every time. Is it bricked? I'm afraid I don't know what their model is, but I believe there were running the latest Mac OS compatible with a CRT iMac - I recall putting more RAM in the machine so they could upgrade the OS a year ago, maybe.
    Many thanks...

Since it's a slot-loader iMac (600 MHz), you can use a feature called FireWire Target Disk Mode.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1661
You can then connect the iMac to your other Mac using a FireWIre cable (assuming it also has a FireWire port). Now, the iMac's hard drive will (hopefully) appear as an external FireWire drive on the other Mac's Desktop. If that works, immediately attempt to copy off all the valuable user data on the iMac's hard drive to the other Mac. Then, if the other Mac has sufficient free storage space, you may want to make a disk image of the iMac's hard drive using Disk Utility. After the image file is created and saved to the other Mac, make sure it can be mounted and accessed.
At this point, you should try using Disk Utility on the other Mac to repair the iMac's hard drive. If the other Mac has Leopard, it has a newer version of Disk Utility so it may be able to do the fix.
If that does not work, and you don't have third party utilities such as DiskWarrior or TechTool Pro to try, you should probably erase the iMac's internal drive using Disk Utility. After erasing completes, go to the Restore tab in Disk Utility. Make that disk image file the Source and the newly erased internal drive the Destination. Check the box for +Erase destination+, and click the Restore button.
If that process completes successfully, use +Repair Disk+ again to make sure there are no errors on the iMac's internal drive. Then, unmount the iMac's internal drive and disconnect the iMac from the other Mac, and attempt to start it up normally.
If it does start up and operate normally, great... If not, you may have to start up from the Mac OS X installation disk for 10.4.x and use the installation option for +Archive and Install+. This this give you a fresh system while retaining the user's account and data. Be sure to run Software Update a few times to install all the updates.
Worst case (if +Archive and Install+ does not make the Mac bootable), you will have to use the +Erase and Install+ option and then separately restore the user's data from that disk image.
Please post back if there are any questions about the above, or you don't get passed one of my many "if" statements.

  • Load of /sbin/launchd failed, errno88 - revisited

    Hi,
I am looking for a solution to what seems to be a fairly frequently occuring problem.
Software Update ran on my MacBook, failed to download/install some OS update (I think it was 11), told me to reboot, when I rebooted, I got the apple logo and a spinning wheel.
Verbose mode gives me /sbin/launchd failed, errno 88.
Can't log in via Single User mode, same reason - stops at /sbin/launchd failed, never get to the prompt.
Ran fsck in target mode as a sudo (that, and diskutil, and fsck_hfs - all came back that my volume was fine). http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106214 on using those commands
Can't boot to my installation DVD to fix it as was described in http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1250841&tstart=75
Nor can I see the CD option when I boot with Option key, nor shift-option-command-delete (is that still supposed to work on the new Wintels?)
However, I can access my slot loader if I boot my MacBook in target mode onto another Mac (unfortunately, it's not a Wintel Mac, so I can't run the Installer on it to reinstall the upgrade and hopefully fix my Mac).
Why can I access my CD drive from another machine in target mode, but not from my machine when trying to reboot from the installation disk? I think if I could get the machine to boot from CD, I could finish the upgrade (which is already downloaded and on my MacBook, I just can't install it), and hopefully that'll get 'er done.
Any ideas / suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
    Best Regards.

  • Help, panic CPU caller 2

    Hi,
any help would be great. Was watching a video on you tube when safari crashed (spinning rainbow). I couldn't force quit so i forced the computer to shut down by pressing the power button. I tried to reboot and now on the grey screen with apple logo i now get the below error come up:
panic(CPU 2 caller 0xffffff80111cdf34): "process 1 exc of /Sabin/launchd failed....... And it keeps going.
DOes anyone know what this is or how rectify it.. I've tried booting in safe mode and it keeps repeating this long message on the apple logo screen.
    Thanks

    Hello weaves56,
Performing a Safe Boot is where I would have started as well if I were getting this panic message at the gray loading screen. I would recommend the other troubleshooting steps in the following article to help you isolate and resolve the issue here:
Mac OS X: Gray screen appears during startup
Just start at the top, and work your way down to the bottom as needed.
Thank you for using Apple Support Communities.

    Hi Guys
No good news I'm afraid. I have been through ALL the system caches and files that were updated at the time of said issue. Reset - rebuild and even gone back to my TimeMachine copy from earlier this AM. Nothing! Can only assume it is something deeper in the /usr or var or private folders.....
I have cloned the system and core files (/usr, /private) etc etc to an external HD and it still recreates the fault. I am afraid to say I have no more time at the minute to look at so have put my machine back to 2 hours prior via my TimeCapsule.
I the absense of anyone else or, indeed, Apple fixing in the next 12 hours, will get back onto it from the cloned copy I have kept and see if I can find the offending file/files...
Sorry I don't have an immedaite solution.

I have resolved the issue. Here is what I did to resolve the issue.
Cleaned up the PGP removal by following the steps from Symantecs sitehttp://www.symantec.com/business/support/index?page=content&id=TECH149057
Removed the OS X Install Data Folder (not sure if that was the exact name) from the root of my HD. I noticed it was sitting there and is not normally there. (I think this was the fix)
I also redownloaded ML install from app store just in case.
Ran fresh download and install went according to plan and I am typing this from ML now
Good Luck anyone else with the same issue.

  • Help on how to fix macbook pro 13inch 2010 (cpu 1 caller 0x47f5ad)?

help on how to fix macbook pro 13inch 2010
Hi, I need some peoples help on fixing my laptop. I have a macbook pro 13 inch 2010 model, and it refuses to boot into either osx or windows. Every time I prevoiusly treid to boot into mac osx I got this error "panic (cpu 1 caller 0x47f5ad)". there is an image below. and when I had treid to boot into windows (bootcamp) I got this error "A disk read error occured Press Ctrl+Alt+Del to restart". I have treid to restart the computer and gotten both these errors agian. The strange things is this deosn't always happen, sometimes I don't get any errors, and it just has the apple logo whith the spinning loading thing happening below (I left this for an hour and it still kept spinning, and never loaded). Other times it just show white whith no errors but never loads, sometime it lets me alt to select which os to boot into (nether work), but other times it just freezes and shows a mouse cursor on the white background. it's not consistent.
Most recently it has a flashing folder on a white background. I treid inserting my osx disc and went into disc utility but it doesn't detect my hardrive. It may be a faulty hardrive or sata cable but I dont know (I have links below). I was recently (well for the first time), defragmenting my windows partition, it hit temparatures of 80-85C, and stayed at that for several hours throughout the defragmentation, would this have damaged it?
I have scoured the internet and found many people whith very similar problems to me but none whith the same, and A lot of people saying that if you get the error you should just use a time machine backup, the thing is I don't have a time machine backup. The internal hardrive I am currently using on my laptop is a seagate 640gb 5400rpm (it's not an apple harddrive). every thing else it standard, standard ram and no overclocking, I was running 10.6.8 snow leopard, and windows xp profesional 32bit (split 320gb each, whith about 10gb spare on each parttion).
It would be greatly appreiciated If any one could shed some light on what I should do. I need the laptop working whithin the week (for my tafe work), but If I have to reinstall the OS's and programs it could take a long0I have a lot of programs and that could take a month. not to mention The fact that the hardrive might be completly fine and it's just a faulty sata connection. but then would I still be getting an error if thats all thats wrong?. and if it is just the error is there anyway I can fix it whitout doing a fresh install, there a error reading document blow but I cannot make heads or tails of it. I also have almost no money to afford getting it fixed.
also one last thing, I stupitidely inserted my mac osx disc 95% of the way into my macs slot loading drive when it was powered down (off). when I turned it on it sucked it in fine, but would that have caused any damage to the disc or laptop (I cannot eject the disc to check)
I have images of many of the things I described below. So any suggestions.
I have also posted this on several other websiets if that helps)

The problem may be that your macbook is'nt set to 'mirror image' if you go into settings, onto 'displays' there should be an option within, once youre connected, to 'mirror image' if you check this box, then the problem should be sorted, if not then maybe a dodgy cable or adapter.

  • PLEASE HELP:  I deleted all my Kernels, and I get a "panic (cpu 0 caller...) during startup.

    Hello,
I use the forum all the time to find solutions to problems, and my Mac was slow so I went to this discussion: "kernel_task high memory usage" and I thought I had to delete my kernel extensions based on what several users said worked for them.  In retrospect it says to delete them for printers, but I accidentally and ignorantly deleted them all.
I restarted my computer and what I get is a quick start to the gray screen and the the apple logo.  On the gray screen I get a bunch of white text in black backgrounds.  It says:
panic(cpu 0 caller 0xffffff800a2c3221): "Unable to find driver for this platform: \"ACPI".\n"@SourceCache/xnu/xnu-2422.110.17/iokit/Kernel/IOPlatformExpert.cpp:1 533
    Debugger called <panic>
Backtrace (CPU 0), Frame : Return Address
and then it has numbers and letters and a : and more numbers and letters
it says aslo "can't perform kext scan: no kext summary
BDS process name corresponding to current thread: unknown
    Mac OS version:
    Not yet set
    Kernel version:"
and it has all the version and other information.  I don't know if you need it to solve the problem.  I can type it up if it's necessary.
I tried holding the shift button to start in safe mode but that doesn't help.  How can I backup my data to an external hard drive?  Some important data is not currently backed up and I don't have a time machine.  I just made several copies of data that's important.  How can I make sure I don't lose anything in the process of fixing my computer?
The computer is MacBook Pro And I think I had Mavericks installed on it.
what do I need to do to backup my data and to fix the computer?  Do I need to reinstall the OS?  If so, how can I do that?  I didn't have an original cd or DVD that came with the computer.  And I upgraded my os through a download.
I Know I did a stupid thing, and it would mean the world if someone can help me resolve this.  Thank you so so much.

    VitoK1,
I’m glad to learn that you’re able to use your MacBook Pro again. To back up your files (as a bit of insurance against future disk problems, so that a disk problem won’t wipe out all of your personal files), you can use the Time Machine app, which is different from the Time Capsule hardware. The Time Machine app can be used with an external disk of your choice; it’s not limited to being used with Time Capsules. As backup software goes, it’s pretty painless.
