Panic! Folder on a Desktop was vanished without trace!
When i create an iWeb site called "Work", I indicated to maintain the site on Desktop.
Soon discovered that iWeb saves all the site structure mixed with the existing folder "Work" with files that were there earlier and the site does not include (pdf, ai, png, tiff, key, pages).
Therefore, I renamed the site in "Worksite" kept it and got ready to clean iWeb files in "Work" folder .
But on the desktop was just a folder with the files only "Worksite" site. A "Work" folder and all its contents had vanished without a trace.
Spotlight can not find anything, DATA Rescue 3 will scan my 320 gigs is 3 hours and restored 1,680,879 files, including very-very old files. Files from a "Work" folder, as well as traces of the folder was not found. Incredible!
Where have gone folder Work with all its contents?
P.S. Colleagues, I am not Lammer. But it first time. Nor can two dozen files and documetns in the two months of various sizes, extensions, names that are in the same folder ... evaporate in an instant without any trace. Who is engaged in file restoration agree with me?

AirPort Extreme vanishes without trace?
Installed a AirPort Extreme into my set-up a week ago, and have now lost my wireless network on 3 occasions (approx 48 hrs in between each loss). It vanishes completly from view and is not visable on my mac or any wireless devices. Only way to reinstate wi-fi is to pull the power supply and re-connect after about 10 seconds and like magic it resets and appears again. Any ideas how to solve this problem?

Spotlight lists items and shows preview images. BUT what about showing the path/location address of an item in my computer.
Especially important if I've put the item in the wrong folder and what to locate it without multi-steps. iMac OS X 10.5 was more useful.
Old OSX Spotlight function automatically displayed path/location within the machine: e.g. desktop/folder/sub-folder/item.
Can I make Spotlight show the path?Press option-command and the path is displayed at the bottom of the little preview window. Press command-return and the enclosing folder opens.

When looking on Web Sites associated with Ancestry information how can i save the information i find to a folder on my desktop without having 3/4 files with other information that i do not want / need. The information i want is shown in a second file which is great but when i delete the 3/4 files i do not want it removes the file that i do want also. I use Windows 7.

What is the method you are using to download the webpage? Are your right clicking on the webpage and choosing "Save as.." or using an alternative method? The 3 or 4 files you are getting are likely the style-sheets associated with the website, without them the website would be nearly impossible to read.

I moved my applications folder to the desktop when i first got my imac. now i want to get rid of it, but when i put it in the trash, it wont let me use the applications, even though they are in more than one folder. I am at a loss of what to do now cause i have two copies of everything. please help me figure this out.

I really don't understand what you're trying to say. If I have a folder in A, and I move it to B, then the folder will be in B. There is no duplication. I still have only one folder, only the location is different.
Furthermore, your desktop is on your hard drive. Everything is on your hard drive. -

I backed up my entire hard-drive of my macbook pro - just prior to installing osx mountain lion.
I put everything into a folder on my desktop - then backed it up onto an external drive. Once this was done - i deleted the folder off my desktop - and following this - things started to go all weird...pages hanging, the coloured 'wheel of death' appeared for ages. So i had to employ a 'hard-boot' restart - as i had not other options.
I'm pretty sure i made copies of of files/apps/folders etc - however not so sure now as i cant even start up my laptop!!!
Can somebosy please help me urgently??!!!Got the exact same problem, and I also did this operation many times before, from 500Gb to 750Gb, and then from 750Gb to 1 Gb. Not My HD got a little such complaining about bad sectors when in windows bootcamp, but still runs fine though.
So I bought a new 1Gb drive exactly same drive as the one thats getting sick. I did the clone thing, with super duper, CCC, DU, but no matter it will not boot when i move the new drive inside the macbook…….**** thing exuse me, but wasted so much time.
Now I get this strange feeling that something must have changed in the macbook itself. Just wondering if this could be a EFI "mac bios" prevention thing, they made just to sell more new computers, when you can't improve or fix your old one.
If so, then its pretty scary. If not then I simply can't figure out why this suddenly becomes a problem for so many people, as I see so many posts about this!!

Yes. You want to add photos from a folder on the desktop to an existing iWeb album page? Just bring up the page in iWeb and drag the photo into the group of thumbnails that are displayed on the page and move it to where you want it locate

No. Desktop spaces affect only applications and their windows. If an icon appears on the desktop it appears on every desktop.

Please help... it seems all is lost as all I kind find on this subject seem to lead to nowhere. My engagement was on imovie, a school project, several videos of our son. You will have to hold my hand through this process... as I am not very good at this type of thing. I believe I have deleted all the necessary plist files and moved my projects and events to a folder on my desktop. imovie has been upgraded to version 9.0.9... Yes this can be many things - and I can only guess/suggest.
A. a very common origin to make the Mac un-happy is to - PANIC-HALT - when the round multicolored thing appear.
So much can go wrong by doing this - and if done often problem builds up that can result in a real disaster.
B. NEVER - move or alter any folder named - iMovie Event's resp. iMovie Project's - as iMovie has no search function - moving them results in that iMovie get's 100% lost.
One can move them - but this HAS TO BE done within the iMovie application (as it is up and running)
C. preference files - there are TWO or more Libraries on Your Mac. First and easy to find is the one You see when opening Your Start-Up Hard Disk window = Root Library == the WRONG ONE
What we need to find is the one in Your User-Account folder (icon as a house) - and this is in Mac OS X.7, X.8 and X.9 HIDDEN. To see it do:
( It can be done like this: Open Terminal, then enter:
chflags nohidden ~/Library
Press return, then restart, and it will always be visible until the next major update, when you do the same thing again. )
or - do like this.
On the Finder window at the top left of the screen,
Hold down the Option key and clicked on Go.
This allowed You to see the Library folder and select it.
Then keep the Option button pressed down in order to see and select the Library folder.
Once found it, You are able to navigate to the iMovie preferences file and move it to the trash. iMovie then start’s up fine!
Now here in Your User Library - find Preferences and trash

com.apple.iMovie3.plist
com.apple.iMovie7.plist
com.apple.iMovie8.plist
com.apple.iMovie9.plist
com.apple.iMovieApp.plist
and find
com.apple.iApps.plist
While iMovie is NOT RUNNING - move this/these file/s out on to desk-top.
Now restart iMovie.
I Prefere another way to find out if this is the problem.
(after all folders (iMovie Event/Projects are moved into original place)
• go up to Apple Menu
• Down to System Pref's
• Select Accounts - Create a new User
• Go down the Apple menu - Log OUT
• Log into as the new User
Now try iMovie
Does it work at all ? (Yes You don't see Events or Projects in Your original Account just now)
If so - Then we know that there is a corrupted pref file to be trashed.
Else - the problem are much more severe.
D. After Panic Halt / Forced Quit - I always do -. to keep disasters on arms length.
• Repair Permissions (Apple Disk Util tool)
• Start from other HD or DVD - then run Repair Hard Disk (Apple Disk Util tool)

When trying to recover a lost iTunes library file, the programme moved all the normal contents of iTunes folder to the desktop. Now what must I do? There is no iTunes Library.itl file. On the desktop it is labelled iTunes Library.xml. Several others files have appeared there too including iTunes Music Library.xml
Before I can use the programme is it necessary to take another step?

The permissions thing may be a red herring, but if there is a problem with file access rights to the designated media folder iTunes has been known to place files on the desktop instead since it can access this location. The most common cause for such problems is working with a folder on an NTFS drive via a differnt account or on a different computer. In the normal course of events folders created inside user profiles have limited rights for other users.
Here are the typical layouts for the iTunes folders:
Normally the iTunes folder will be created at <User's Music>\iTunes with the media folder inside it. The library files should all appear in the same place so your comment about there not being an iTunes Library.itl file is confusing. Is it just the case that the .itl extension is hidden? The two .xml files makes sense from the above and indicates that the active library is not in <User's Music>\iTunes, but you have a recovered file from when it was.
If, in fact, the situation is that your desktop is acting as the main iTunes folder, and contains the library file, Album Artwork, iTunes Media and (optionally) Previous iTunes Libraries folders, with all other content being inside the iTunes Media folder, then it should be relativly easy to rearrange your into the correct shape and move them to the correct location.
If things are more complex, with something other than a library folder containing a media folder, then reestablishing the normal order is more complicated. The iTunes consolidate function is used to bring copies of files stored outside of the media folder into the media folder. It may sometimes be needed as part of the process of tidying up, however it leaves behind originals. There are circumstances where there isn't room for two complete sets of the media files on the same drive which is why I suggested the script might be useful as it produces the same results for the library without leaving the originals for manual clear up.
I think before you do anything however, we should get a clearer picture of exactly what is where. Could you perhaps take a screenshot of the desktop and post it here? Take a look at this post on making a split library portable. The same techniques I outline there can be used to lick your library into shape, it is just a question of working out which to use in which order for the best effect.

I recently tried to burn some photos on a CD. For some reason, It did not work. Now I have a .fpbf folder on my desktop. I can't seem to get rid of it. I tried dragging it to the trash, but then I get a box asking my to type my password it, so Finder can make the changes. Doing so, does nothing at all. And when I try to burn another CD from the same .fpbf file, I get a the following message: "There are 35 items that can’t be burned because the original items can’t be found. Skip the items and continue burning?". When I skip and continue burning, nothing shows up on the CD. In the meantime, the .fpbf folder is still in my desktop. I tried changing the aliases on each pic, but it still doesn't work. Any ideas of how I can remove this folder from my desktop?

Thank you for your detailed explanation but something is seriously wrong with my computer. Although the method you have described is very similar to the one I tried in step 2 from my second post, I have since "done things" which may have complicated matters—or suggests that my computer has a more serious problem.
Here's what I did:
1). Installed Onyx and discovered that I had a .plist file (com.apple.iphotomosaic.plist) that was causing a Syntax error: "Conversion of data failed. The file is not UTF-8, or in the encoding specified in XML header, if XML." After doing some research online, I was given the understanding that downloading the iLife update 9.0.3 (I installed the more recent version, 9.0.4) would solve this problem because it would also fix some system issues. So, I downloaded it...and when it didn't solve the problem, I decided to just deleted that .plist file.
2). I read your knew post and decided to follow your directions, even though I realized they were basically the same steps I followed in the 2nd method I mentioned earlier. I say "basically" because, for some reason, after inserting a blank disc, my computer does not open the disc in the Finder. Instead, it places the blank disc's image on the Desktop, even though the Finder's Preferences and the System's Preferences are set to have it open in the Finder—nothing should be on my Desktop! (Note: When transferring the items (all folders) I want to burn to the blank disc, I did not use the Option-Click-Drag method as before, I used the Click-Drag method, which created the curved arrow in the lower left corner of each item.)
Now, for the result of "method 2," the method we basically have in common, the computer goes through the burn stage but, in the verify stage, tells me that it is unable to verify the disk, suggests that my DVD may be unreliable and that I should try another disc, and then tells me about some "fork" (?) error (-43).

long story short...i attempted to import pics from iphoto to a folder on my desktop but somehow clicked desktop so 45,000 pics loaded to my desktop and now my computer freezes up after trying to load everything, and i'm not able to just drag the photos into the folder. is it possible to reverse this? what are my options? restore hd from time machine?
a further question to restoring my hd from a previous backup on time machine...it says it will erase the hd. does it actually erase everything or does it just erase anything that may have been added or downloaded since that backup? this is confusing to me.
another problem which is part of the original problem is it seems that when i connect my iphone to my computer and iphoto uploads my pics...it doesn't just upload new ones, it duplicates and uploads every picture again...which is why i have 45,000 pics...they are 40,000 duplicates! what's up with that?
I have a macbook pro, and recently updated the os to Yosemite. the iphoto app is out of date, but i'll worry about that once i can figure out how to get all those pics off the desktop. also, i recently purchased and installed 8g of new ram, but that hasn't seemed to help.

the booting and walking away and then attempting to browse and clean method is what i've been trying to do. it won't let me drag and drop and just freezes up and goes to sleep after 2 minutes. it's a never ending battle with very few results. which is why i questioned the method of just restoring the hd from a time machine backup.
do you think restoring the hd from time machine will resolve the issue with all pics on the desktop? and everything will be as it was from the date i restore it from? sorry, as you can tell, i'm not overly computer savvy.
i have a really old desktop mac...i can try connecting the two...how does one boot a mac in 'target mode'?
as for the iphoto cleaning and organizing issue...that is what i was trying to accomplish with importing them to a folder. was going to browse and clean from there...but somehow imported to desktop which is what's complicating everything. once i get them off the desktop i can work on the iphoto issue...which as i mentioned...i didn't take 45,000 pics...i've just taken about 4,500 over the last few years, and they are being duplicated in iphoto. this was my attempt to clean it out entirely and start over. it will basically be a lot of deleting.
one problem, seems to lead me to more...which is just my luck. :-)

Photos in iPhoto cannot be found in the Library Folder on the desktop
I have a perplexing problem with iPhoto 6. A couple of months ago, I started a new Library and renamed it Current iPhoto Library placing it on the Desktop (rather than in the Pictures Folder).
I did this because my laptop became too full and I ran out of hard disk space. The original Library resides on an external hard disk.
I added many new photos to the new Library, inside of new albums.
My problem is that all the new photos seem detached from the Library Folder on the desktop.
They do take up memory, and now my laptop hard disk is full again.
But I cannot free up space because the Library folder does not recognize the existence of the new photos—even though while in iPhoto, with the program is running, I have no trouble accessing all the photos.
I tried DiskWarrior, assuming that there was a Directory malfunction. That did not help.
I tried rebuilding the Library using iPhoto's built-in capability, by starting the program while pressing the Command and Option keys. No help.
How can I make the Library Folder recognize all the photos that iPhoto can see fine within the program?First, thank you for keeping up with me.
Second, where do look for Folder? On the desktop? iPhoto?
Third, in replaying what must have happened, I think I have an idea of what went wrong. Originally, I moved my first Library to an external HD to free up space on my laptop, and I started a new Library. Some time ago, iPhoto must have spontaneously created a new third Library. It left what I am calling the second Library as the only visible folder containing an iPhoto Library. I was able to mount the small second Library when I restarted iPhoto by pressing Option and selecting the only Library that was visible to me. When I did that, unfortunately iPhoto disengaged from the huge third Library it had created. All along the third Library was invisible on the desktop as a folder--which is why I got into trouble. I ran out of space again and wanted to move the contents of what I now realize was a third Library to another external HD. But I couln't find that Library anywhere. Strangely, for the last three months, I did not know there were three Libraries, only two. The one iPhoto created as the third one worked perfectly when I would start up iPhoto. But now it is gone. Not even DiskWarrior can find it. -
I'm using two displays and several desktops on my Mac (OS X 10.9.4).
When I need to restart Firefox, it remembers to open windows from last session in correct display, but does not remember which desktop was used for each window. So when the application starts, it opens all windows on a desktop which is currently active instead of reopening them on desktops used during the last session. How to fix the issue?Hi Nerva,
Thank you for your question, there is a add on I have been recommended to custom set up of opening windows in new monitors. It's called [https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/monitor-master/ Monitor Master].
However, in regards to the session remembering which monitor the window was open in, in the profile folder there is a file that stores window positions and dimensions. It is called localstore.rdf.
Please stay tuned for more investigation, as there are definitely bugs on file for similar issues. Pinpointing it is the hard part.
