Panic - hardware or software?
Hello, macbook pro, mac os x 10.5.8
System froze and a big black window with white writing came up and said: Computer failure - hold power button for 3 seconds, and 2 other languages as well. Had to hold button for a while before the system would reset.
I looked in /Library/panicreport for a file (found this on this discussion site (thank you)). Given the information below, how do I know if this is a hardware or software problem? I have one month left on my support contract. Suspect I will have to call this one in.
THis is what is says:

Well, unless you are an expert in kernel panics, have a second computer connected, and have the panic debugging software, you really can't know for sure.
Your panic was apparently generated by Skype in conjunction with the GPU driver.
Visit The XLab FAQs and read the FAQ on diagnosing kernel panics.
Is this the only panic you've had? If so, then it may just be a glitch or problem with Skype. Be sure you are using the current version of Skype. If you are experiencing frequent panics, then I'd suggest booting into Safe Mode for a while to see if they stop. Note that you cannot use wireless while in safe mode.

Kernel Panic - Hardware or software?
Mac Pro Early 2008. 2 x 2.8 Quad Core. 16 GB RAM. OS X 10.8.2 (12C60)
This morning my Mac Pro Refused to start.
It goes into an endless cycle of the grey panel message "Your computer needs to restart etc. ...... " with each restart failing.
Here is what I have done and discovered so far:
1) Disconnected all peripherals and network and secondary monitor leaving only principle Apple monitor, Apple Keyboard and Apple mouse. No help - Problem remains.
2) Done a recovery start up and repaired disks and permissions (nothing significant found there). No help - problem remains.
3) I can do a safe boot and have tried rebooting from this. No help - problem remains.
However inspecting the system from Safe Boot starts to show some interesting things.
4) If I open Acitivity Monitor and look at RAM it is completely clogged with Page Ins (Over 14 GB of them). The Pie Chart is completely red. This would look like a RAM issue. There is almost 160 GB of free space on my startup disc and 16GB of RAM Installed.
5) "About this Mac" Memory tab correctly finds and identifies all the DIMMS and shows their size and slots correctly.
No. 4 would seem to indicate a memory problem but No 5 would seem to indicate that the DIMMS are functional and the system able to address them.
I have tried removing the DIMMs and trying them pair by pair and in various different combinations. No change. The system can consistently identify them and their slots but the Only Safe Boot works and the Page In log jam is always present.
I am mystified as whether I have a hardware or software problem here. If it is software then a full clean re-install followed by a time machine restore may solve things. What worries me is that if I have a hardware problem and attempt this I may end up with no OS as well.
Any suggestions for further analysis? Any wisdoms greater than mine can explain the significance of the Page ins? Should I try re-installlng first or is it time to visit the repair shop?
Any help welcome please.
David MacSorry to be late responding. I have been unexpectedly bedridden since posting and only able to try your suggestion today.
Sadly I cannot get Apple's hardware test to run at all. Holding down the D key does nothing at all. Accessing the test by internet isn't going to work on a 2008 machine. Tried the original installation disc as suggested by apple. Doesn't work. Since Lion install I cannot start up from any disc pre Lion- it causes a black screen 'You need to restart ......".
So stymied for now.
Looks like I'll have to try ans see if a full clean re-install will work. If it doesn't then back to the shop.
I have the whole system fully backed up externally so nothing to lose in the long run. Just don't want more chaos than necessary ;o) -
Kernel panic: hardware or software problem?
Can anyone read those logs and tell me what could be the problem?
I bought a refurbished MBP 15" 2.2GHz i7 quad core with anti glare screen and originally 750GB HDD 4Gb of ram and it arrived on September 1st. I wanted to upgrade to 8GB of RAM and a SSD but at the moment I upgraded only the SSD (to a 120GB Corsair Force 3). In those days I experienced 5 kernel panic. It's not the first mac I buy, and those kernel panic are a bit too frequent and unnatural. I run the Apple Hardware Test twice (in the extended test) but no errors there.
Before getting Kernel panic, it could happen that I see some graphic artifacts on screen (maybe it's the ram? the graphic card(s)?). I installed gfxCardStatus v2.1 to switch to intel integrated GPU.
I'm running on mac os 10.6.8, all software is up to date.
Here are the logs:

NVIDIA GPU Kernel Panic - Hardware or Software?
Hi, everyone,
I generally don't game on my MBP, except for some Torchlight, Plants and Zombies, but recently, decided to pick up Europa Universalis 3 developed by Virtual Programming for Mac.
I've been playing for days and then last night, in the midst of playing, the game froze, the screen flickered and basically crashed, forcing me to power down and back up. I've only ever had two kernel panics in the life of this machine, this being the second (the other not game related).
I dug up the system log and this is the only entry associated with the crash:
11-05-30 10:46:33 PM kernel NVDA(OpenGL): Channel exception! exception type = 0x6 = Fifo: Parse Error 00000069
This error continues until I shut it down.
From searching on this forum, this seems to be specific to NVIDIA, as the ATI Macs/MBP don't have these issues. Is this a software issue (due to poor drivers) or something more serious like a hardware issue that I should actually bring in to Apple and have repaired? My sense is it's a software issue, and I should stay away from 3D gaming on this MBP despite the fact that it has an integrated and discrete solutions.
From what I understand, too, the ATI-based MBP don't have performance issues, and perform well.
First Starcraft 2's poor performance (despite this hardware) and now this.
Very disappointed.
Thanks for your input.
Cheers,
Wilde.Hi, Linc Davis, I have a same one, and a few other people with Mac book pro Retina 2012 GPU-Panics
Than, screen goes off, but you can still hear computer working and keyboard works. You can change volume and hear it changing.
I checked it and if you plug external HDMI screen, it still works. Than when you run a hard video program, it crashes with GPU-Panic, and external screen also goes off. It crashes right when it slightly changing colors (switching from one Video card to more powerful one.)

Kernel panic: hardware or software related
I had two kernel panic incidents recently. I know that most kernel panics are related to hardware. I have not 3rd party ram and only my monitor, keyboard (apple) and mouse installed. That is, no additional usb or firewire devices. I understand that faulty ram is one possibility and that ram tests may not fully diagnose the problem. I tested my ram with rember and the techtools that I got with my applecare (runs out march 2009.) I was not able to boot into the techtools DVD so had to run it off of the harddrive after updating. I ran rember with the finder still active (there is the option to run rember without the finder running). The memory tests in rember and techtools passed which I understand may not tell me much. I have not yet run the memory test off of my install disks.
Before updating to 10.4.11 using the combo updater, I booted from my install disk and repaired the drive (it was ok) and repaired permissions (from the install disk). I did the same two tasks from the install disk after the updates, although I let a couple of days pass before doing these tasks. After reading in another forum that repairing permissions from the install disk (os 10.4.5) might have caused some problems, I just repaired permissions while running from my day-to-day account.
I have decent backups.
I thought I'd run my two kernel panics by you folk in this forum to see if anyone has any suggestions.
*kernel panic #1*
I got this kernel panic the other day on shutting down. That is I shut down using the shutdown command in the apple menu then got the kernel panick The only new thing that I had done (asides from finally updating to macosx 10.4.11 and the latest security patch) was that I had my idisk set to automatic, so the mirror agent was active. I have shut down a couple of times since with out kernel panic.

kernel panic #2
This actually happened twice put I only have one crash log. I think that the reason why I only had one crash log is because after the second kernel panic, I had to boot into safe mode to get rid of my icalalarm scheduler from my login items because of some conflict. Anyway, the scenario is that I am using firefox 3.0 (I have the latest version) and then open google earth. After I try to open google earth, I get kernel panic.

She read the report from my earlier conversation with Apple Care, I told her about the error message from AHT, and she then did a very thorough diagnostic using one of their utilities. Her theory was that if it was hardware related, that it might be the graphics card on the logic board or the memory. Seems that she was having a hard time finding the error code for my mini model in their database. <shrug> The memory test took about an hour and it passed. And I think it passed the other tests she did, but when she tried to reboot the machine, got a kernel panic which told her that it is the logic board (graphics card that is soldered on the logic board.
The Bridgewater NJ store is undergoing some renovations so they are, for the moment, not able to order parts and have lost much of their backroom. But she took down a detailed report with new apple care case number after making an appointment for me at another apple store (Menlo Park, I've been there before, they are good). She also told them to order a logic board. I work tomorrow, so I am going this Friday afternoon. -
Lion 10.7 Only Boots in Safe Mode. Is This a Hardware or Software Issue?
Hi. On my iMac late 2009 i7 8GB bought last March only. I reinstalled Lion (I didn't erase the whole disk because I have Boot Camp Windows and I have filed there) and it can only boot in safe mode if I use the Mac's built-in EFI bootloader (where you have to press option on restart) menu then press shift after choosing the iMac OS X hardisk. I've been trying to fix it for around 4 days now today. I'm tempted to take it to the authorized Mac shop but that could take weeks to months in our country. If I let it boot normally, it would seem to have a kernel panic and would stop at the white/gray screen. Verbose mode showed that is stopped at something 10 of these like: nstat fail.
Is this a GPU hardware problem, specifically the 3D element of this 4850M GPU? I'd like to do load each kext, each extension manually but I can't find them in Lion. When I use the Lion DVD or the Lion Recovery partition, it's very sluggish, every click and process takes 20 seconds to minutes. If I try to boot in Linux, Snow Leopard DVD or Snow Leopard external hardisk, there seems to be a kernel panic. It's either just a black screen or a garbled screen.
I want to erase/format the iMac's hardisk but in Safe Mode, it can't be mounted even if I use Disk Utility. If only there's a way to force it to mount, I can save some Windows 7 file to one of my external hardisk or flash drive. Does anyone know of an app or program that can mount NTFS files on Lion's Safe mode?
If it's a Lion bug, has Lion somehow corrupted the Mac's built-in (hardware not the EFI partition in the hardisk) EFI or somehow corrupted the Mac or GPU's ROM? Could it be a new OS X virus? Should I then perform in Safe Mode to flash the GPU ROM and the Mac's ROM again (I have the latest)?
Do you think if I erased the whole drive, reinstalled it again with either Snow Leopard (assuming it doesn't boot into a garbled screen) or Lion things will go back to normal?
Has anyone experienced something like this? What was the culprit (was it a hardware or software issue) and what was the solution?
Gbu.Hi thanks for all the concern and replies. I've tried all that.
I had just got it back from the shop last Friday. It was there for around two weeks. It was a faulty GPU (when you see garbled display that's consisten when booting it the GPU). I have a strong feeling it's related to the Lion install 10.7 or 10.7.1 and may be similar to reports of Mac laptops overheating. It's good the GPU is removable, it might have taken 3 week or a month if it had been the whole board.
It's a blessing in disguise though as with all or most cases because I also got to have the LCD replaced for excessive backlight bleeding (in my opinion), the dead pixel from the previous LCD isn't there anymore (though under the glass there're some smudges but nothing crucial). The backlight bleeding is still the same though in my opinion but at least it's new.
It's a great thing I bought Applecare. I didn't buy it for the iPhone because that's more durable (my iPhone 3G's 3 years old now and it's still solid. Although there are scratches and a crack at the back at the bottom, got sqeezed under the table I think when I sat). I think Applecare is a good recommend for things that get hot like desktop and laptop Macs(are the iOS considered Macs btw?) which are twice or thrice the price of iOS devices.

My MacBook keeps crashing. Hardware or software issue?
Here is a copy of the error report. Any ideas?

If your MacBook Pro is turning off unexpectedly, isolating the issue to hardware or software is a good place to start.

PLEASE HELP!
My Lenovo SL500 is not working at all - I get error: "Windows Vista failed to start. A recent hardware or software change might be the cause"
I tried the following on my Lenovo:
Windows repair menu = "windows cannot be repaired"
Lenovo Rescue and Repair
Rescued my files from Hard-drive (copied to external hdd)
Restore System = Failed
Diagnose hardware = HDD passes all tests
Don't know what else to do with = Boot from another device ? Access BIOS?
Because I do not have the windows vista install disks
I purchased and downloaded the recovery disks from neosmart.net
The neosmart windows vista recovery disks DO NOT WORK = Error is "Unable to find any valid Windows partitions on this computer".
The Hard-drive exists because I was able to back-up files from HD through (Lenovo Rescue & Recovery Rescue files). So there is a hard-drive.
I don't know what to do next?
Last resort is to Factory Restore via either the Lenovo R&R or Windows Vista Recovery Disks (neosmart)?
Will I still have windows?
PLEASE HELP!Hi, Josemne
Yes, if you can restore the system through Rescue & Recovery, then you will still have WIndows on your machine, but all your files will be deleted from the hard drive. Luckily, you have already saved those files elsewhere. I would recommend trying to restore the system and see if that works.
Best,
Adam

My bb Z10 just went completely blacked while i was using it this afternoon. It had above 70%charge while i was using it. i removed the battery and checked again a number of times. I even tried with another z10 battery properly working and found that its not a problem with my battery since the phone worked well with my battery in the other device.
Since i bought the phone from another country and cant get the service here in India (the phone is still in the warranty period) I m confused what to do.
It would be really useful if I could figure out whether its software or hardware failure. If its a hardware prob, i should ship the device for warranty time benefits of service. But it it where a software prob, i could find out someway to solve this somehow here in India.
HOW TO KNOW ITS A HARDWARE OR SOFTWARE FAILURE?try this,
connect the device to BlackBerry link.by connecting it the conputer using USB cable(you can use your USB charger here)
then while the device is still connected to the computer do not remove the USB but remove the battery.
if BlackBerry link will be able to detect the device you can perform a back up(to keep the data of the device) then update the device. you need internet connection.
this should fix the issue if the problem is with the software
let me know what happens

Keyboard problems: hardware or software?
The keyboard on my iBook G4 has dead keys, not all in a row but grouped on the right side of the keyboard (they include the enter key, 'l', the comma, and three or four others). There's no obvious damage to the keyboard (I've lifted the keyboard out and inspected the connector, and nothing looks cracked or broken).
Is there any means to tell if this is a hardware v. software problem? I can use my logitech keyboard and mouse with the iBook (in fact, I'm doing that now). I've restarted, repaired permissions, zapped the PRAM and run other maintenance scripts with no success.
Thanks!I don't have a firewire external hard drive or a bootable backup (I do have a Time Machine backup to a USB hard drive, but I don't see that I can boot from that external drive). I did boot from the OS10.5 disk, but of course there's nothing (so far as I can see) that allows me, once booted, to test the keyboard -- i.e., no text edit.
I can use my external (logitech) keyboard just fine, and nothing else seems to be wrong with the computer, so I'm leaning toward replacing the keyboard (I'm not against that anyway, just on the grounds of preventative maintenance). So, a related question: what's the best way to be sure that I buy the right replacement keyboard for my 1.42 GHz G4? Is the part number on the keyboard itself, or available through System Profile (I could not find it there). As always, thanks! -
I'd appreciate some views about whether my totally flaky PowerBook is suffering from hardware or software problems, if it's possible to tell.
The computer goes bad in various ways but most frequently some application will stop responding, and soon after that nothing can be saved, error messages appear about disk problems or shared library problems, and so on. Restarting would usually restore everything for a while, but it's been getting worse. This trouble started after I had a new (Apple) hard drive installed, but the place that installed it has twice checked the drive and all my hardware, and all tests were passed.
When the trouble grew constant, I wiped my drive clean, installed a new system, dragged in the contents of folders from a backup, and things were better for a while and then got just as bad and even worse.
What I did next makes me think that it's a hardware problem, like perhaps the new drive or RAM (both under warranty), and I'd like to know whether this makes sense:
My backup is on an external HD, created with Carbon Copy Cloner. I can boot from that backup and everything functions normally-- I don't think I've ever had a problem when booted from the external system. But recently I (again)reformatted my laptop's drive and used CCC to clone from the external to the internal drive, and the resulting system would start up and immediately be frozen. Does it follow from this that either my cloning was imperfect or there is a hardware problem on my laptop?
(I then reformatted the drive again, installed a fresh system and used Migration Assistant, or whatever it's called, to pull in the contents of my backup, and it worked for about a week and then got even flakier than ever. Won't boot up at all anymore. The bootable backup still seems fine, though.)
The place that replaced my HD say the computer is old, just get a new one. But if it's just the drive, or just the RAM...After about a day and a half with the new hard drive installed, I have yet to see any evidence of my recurring problems. I spent the first evening using only a newly installed system on the new drive (worked fine), then yesterday morning I cloned everything back from my external "backup". So it's been a day of apparent full functioning. Considering that in its last stages, my computer wasn't able to even open Safari, this does point to a bad hard drive. The only other possibility, I suppose, could be some sort of loose connection that had gotten progressively worse, which could have jiggled back into place during the drive swap, in which case it might show itself again gradually as it did before (the problems started a few weeks after the HD was installed). At any rate, I seem to have a working computer at the moment, which is only to the good.
After another day or so I am going to try to open Eudora. This was what seemed to trigger all of my earlier problems (they first began shortly after I made a change in Eudora Preferences, and the HD installers assured me that the problem was not in their new drive and that my "Eudora was toast." After that, it did seem that every time I used Eudora, problems would arise (rebooting seemed to make them okay temporarily) and so I have not used my POP3 email for months, and have about a thousand emails up on the server that will download into Eudora In as soon as I dare to try this.
The guy who installed (in May) the almost-surely-bad HD said that if my experiment proved the drive was bad, I would probably be out of luck because the warranty on that drive had run out, which is a laugh because I came back with a complaint, for the first of about four times, only three weeks after it had been put in. But I don't know if it's worthwhile pursuing justice (assuming my new new drive continues to work). As I said, I do not need another 80GB drive, and don't think I ever will. Should I try to demand a refund for that drive and the labor costs of installing it and transfering data?

Hardware or Software Problem?
Hi
Every six weeks or so, my IMAC G5 slows down until it doesn't respond (pinwheels galore).
Ultimately I run disk utility from the Leopard Disk, but verify disk and repair disk both fail. So I erase the hard drive and re-install. Everything is then great for about six weeks until I start waiting for godot again...
How can I tell if this is a hardware or software issue? I'm sick of doing this, so if the solution is hardware I'd be willing to get new hardware. I don't want to get new hardware, and then have the same problem when I transfer of the data.
Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Rob

You can use OnyX to clear your caches, and how much RAM do you have? Increasing that might speed things up as well. Make sure your trash is emptied as well.
These are a few things you can do to speed your machine up, you can also clear out deadwood, run [whatsize|http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/44018] to see if anything you don't use is taking up lots of space. -
Hardware or software issue causing purple lines & no boot...
I was watching a movie on my Mac Pro (2006) and suddenly the video stopped and purple lines went all over parts of the screen. I couldn't do anything, not even a force quit, I was forced to turn off the power.
Upon restart, the Apple logo is showing the same purple lines, though the grey background was unaffected. After the loading, the logo disappears and then I get a cursor and a beachball and nothing else. Mouse input works, but otherwise the computer does nothing.
I was able to do a safe boot and it works, but the purple lines still remain.
Anyone else have this issue? Does it sound like hardware or software?
I'm probably gonna transfer files and just reinstall snow leopard. I'm hoping it's not a dead video card or something. If that's the case, then it's just become a craigslist special... maybe $250?lol
Any input/help is much appreciated.
WHatActually, I have a Late 2011 Macbook Pro Quad Core Sandy Bridge that's mostly been sitting in my safe since I bought it in 2011 (insurance replacement form a Core 2 Duo era Macbook Pro that was stolen).
That thing has always run circles around the Mac Pro. It may run at a slower clock speed, but everything about the Sandy Bridge Core i7 is superior to the now severely obsolete Woodcrest Xeons
It's definitely served me well, it was my first Intel Mac, I moved from a Powerbook G4 1.5ghz to this, and it was amazingly fast, even running Adobe CS2 in Rosetta. But lately, for me it's been getting slower and slower. Any websites with flash are slow as molasses. I can't even make it through an episode of a show on the History or A&E websites without the last segment being a slideshow.
I've recently switched to the Chrome browser, it's helped in usability, but it's still not ideal.
I'll wait for a good deal on a 7300GT on eBay to get it back up and running. Still, I really like iCloud and all the integration that comes with the latest Mac OS releases, so it really is time for me to start using my modern Macs more. I was already heading in this direction. It's been a good system, but it's time has passed. I'm already moving my iTunes HD to my Macbook Pro, next I gotta get the files off of the Mac Pro onto an external.
Maybe I'll just keep it around as a Rosetta system since that's the one area where my Macbook Pro falls short. I still use PPC apps once in awhile.lol -
Remote Desktop Services - VDI / Hardware and Software requiremnts
I am going to plan to do POC for 50 user on customer end for Microsoft VDI installation. For this i required hardware and software requirement.
Hi Pratik,
Thank you for posting in Windows Server Forum.
It all depends on how you want to configure your VDI environment. In Server 2012\R2 there are 2 flavors: Pooled & Personal and further can deploy both that as Managed\UnManaged deployment. You can check following article for further details.

Windows xp pro stalls - blank screen- hardware or software problem?
Hi Guys,
My system is about one month old and has been awesome in performance and graphics.
Suddenly it (windows xp pro) stalls after flashing the windows loading screen and it goes blank. Looks like a software problem?
I am posting on this forum because when I check cmos, no hard drives are registered.
I can't get into safe mode, can't get past the administrator/user screen because no mouse operates here and can't select icons with the keyboard.(No admin passwords were set up anyway)
Booting from CD, repair console doesn't work because it can't find any hard drive.
Reluctant to do a complete reinstall because of precious stuff on the hard drive.
Using f8, "last known good..." just gives the same blank screen.
Using floppy boot, no other drives are recognized.
If my root directory has been wiped out by a virus or something, how come it gets past post and starts to load windows? If it's merely the graphics driver or similar not loading, how come the cmos shows no hard drive?
Is this a hardware or software problem? Any help much appreciated.THE ANSWER !!
Hi Guys,
I finally got to talk to the guy who set up this system and he said that it is normal for RAID drives not to show on BIOS/CMOS. 'Think of it like a vrtual drive' he said. When the black and white initialization screen shows something like: 'Nividia Stripe-healthy'...then THAT is the hard-drive.
He said that as long as Windows was getting to the loading screen, that means that the computer itself was functioning okay, so don't worry about BIOS, the problem is a file corruption in windows, or virus etc.
Also he said that when trying to use recovery console or reinstall windows, because the system can only read the RAID drives through a SCSI interface, you have to load the Nvidia SCSI drivers from floppy by pressing f6 when asked to at the bottom of the pale blue screen (from Windows cd boot), before trying to do anything with windows (or windows will just tell you it can't read the drives, as it did before with me.)
So in the end, I reinstalled windows by that method and everyting seems fine so far. YAY!
Thanks you people for being kind enough to help someone out. I really appreciate it.
