Panic - I seem to have messed up a my shared iPhoto library....

I truly hope someone can help me with my issue.
I was following instructions for rebuilding my iphoto library - it is shared between two users and so the library has been moved to the shared folder within the Users directory.  I am not sure what happend to cause the mess but when I start iphoto it starts as though it is the first time using it - no pictures  just a "to get started" sticky note.
I have started while holding down the option key and confirmed that the library that is being chosen is the one that is in the shared folder.  Furthermore when I select the iphoto library that I want to open from within the finder it appears to be 15 gb which is the size I would have normally expected it to be.
Is there some way to fix this data so that I get my photo's back.  I do have time machine and so I can go back to a time before I tried to rebuild, but I am really not sure how to do that so if that is the best path I would appreciate any direction to accomplish this.
I have other back ups but at present if I was to have to back to them it would be a year or more of very key photos lost.
Please help and thank you.
Scott

As I continue to try and figure this out I have noticed that even the library that I did not touch or try to update - (an older one that was not shared and that resided in my home directory under Pictures - the default location for iphoto libraries) will not open now. This library is a year or so old but normally would have over 1000 photos.  It appears as an available library to open when I start iPhoto while holding down the option key but even after being selected iphoto opens completely empty.
It seems like there is something that is preventing iPhoto from reading these libraries but I am not sure how to correct this.  I suspect when I try to restore from time machine I will encounter the same issue.  Before I do anything else I am copying the data that was in the Photo Masters folder from within the iPhoto package to an external HD.  They are all JPGs and appear to open properly inside Preview so once completed I will be dealing with trying to get iPhoto to work not the more critical issue of recovering 9 years of family photos.
Still will be very appreciative of any guidance on getting back to normal.

The Lion upgrade does not touch iPhoto. However, you may need to purchase an iPhoto upgrade.
Look in your /Home/Pictures/ folder for the iPhoto Library file.

  • I have a problem when syncing my iphoto library to my iphone 3gs. There apprears to be more than 40  events with the same names but containing only 2-5 pics in my itunes sidebar when in fact I only have around 10 events on iphoto. How do I fix this?

This has never happened before, and I've tried deleting all photos off my phone then syncing them all instead of specific events and nothing. I have around 10 events in my iphoto library but around 3,500 pictures. I have more than enough space on my phone but I only like to sync certain events, so when I go sync them I notice there are over 40 events listed, and all of them have the same name but it seems as though each "event" has like 2 photos.. On my phone all the different events come up as well. This is super annoying, does anyone know how to fix this ?

I have the exact same problem!
I have about 25 albums and a total of 8,100 pictures. When i go to iTunes -> "My iphone" -> Pictures, and then check the box to sync choses events the list of events is messed up. The same events shows up like 3-4 times and the events only have a couple of pictures in them.
Does anyone know what can be causing this? Or what can be done to fix it?

  • IPhoto Library locked in Yosemite; You do not have permission to open the document "iPhoto Library"

Long story to get to the iPhoto part but may help someone who is in-the-know about what can be done for me...
I turned on my computer a few weeks ago (iMac 27" late 2012, 2.9GHz Intel core i5) to access some photos in iPhoto and it would not load to the home screen but gave me the Disc Utilities Menu. From memory the options I had were; (1) Restore from Time Machine Back-up, (2) Re-install OSX, (3) Get online Help, (4) Repair or Erase using Disc Utility.
I tried Repair in option 4... no success.
I tried option 1 as I have my internal HDD backed up to an external HDD via Time Machine in case anything goes wrong... no success.
I tried option 2 (which was Mavericks) and it loaded and took me to my desktop.
When I tried to opened the iPhoto app in the dock there were no photos in it.
After searching forums and the internet they suggested it may have been an iPhoto upgrade issue so I tried to update iPhoto but found it was already up-to-date.
After looking, I found that the "iPhoto Library" in "Pictures" had a red circle with the white dash through it and was locked. When the "iPhoto Library" folder was double clicked I got the message "You do not have permission to open the document “iPhoto Library”.
In all the trouble I have upgraded to Yosemite 10.10.3 (with Photos 1.0) and am obviously still having the same warning/error message come up when the iPhoto Library folder is clicked.
Right click won't allow me to view package contents.
The "Import" function in the "Photos" app won't do anything with the folder, and the "iPhoto Library" folder looks and functions the same in all of the back-ups on my external HDD Time Machine.
I don't care if I need to use "Photos" or "iPhoto" but I do need to get the photos out because they are irreplaceable. If had know this problem was possible (especially while using Time Machine) I would have manually stored and backed my photos up in folders on another external HDD.
Any help would be greatly appreciated, feel free to ask any additional Questions (but this is the first time I have posted in the forum so hopefully I can work out what is going on if you do reply to this post )
    Cheers.

Thanks for the suggestion. I had tried this earlier with no success either. Even with the padlock unlocked I can't even change the tab that says "OPEN WITH". I still get the... "You do not have permission to open the document “iPhoto Library” message. You may also it continues to say "Fetching" where it should say my user name at the bottom.

  • I just purchased Aperture and have 20,000  photos in my iPhoto Library. Can I import only certain events from iPhoto into Aperture or do I have to merge the whole iPhoto library?

I just purchased Aperture and have 20,000 + photos in my iPhoto Library. I see that I can create a unified library between the two. I am wondering if I can import only certain events from iPhoto (like only 2014 events) into Aperture or do I have to merge the whole iPhoto library? Are there any benefits to bringing the whole iPhoto library over to Aperture (iPhoto is SO SLOW for me, I wonder if it is because I have so many photos). Or, any detriment to only bring a few events over?
And, if I don't merge the two libraries, I assume that means I cannot do it at a later date?
Help. My local Apple store has had very few Aperture workshops, and the next one is like 2 months away.

Thank you so much for this information. Here are some responses/comments:
Disk space - it says 114.43 GB out of 499.25 GB free. I have no idea if that is enough.
    iPhoto version is 9.5.1
Again, I am not sure how to know if I have 3rd party software...but I don't think I do. Is 3rd party software anything non-apple?
I will try rebuilding the library. if that doesn't help, maybe I need more memory...? That is what Apple suggested, but that, of course, means buying something else. I've already bought APERTURE, on their recommendation...
It wasn't, and they told me it was slow because I had too many photos for iPhoto to handle and that I should buy Aperture. Which I did.
What is your iPhoto version? Are you using the most recent version 9.5.1?
iPhoto can handle 20000 photos, no problem.  Your computer can be slow for several reasons:
The most common problem for slowness - insufficient disk space. Don't let your free disk space drop below 20 GB of free space, better more. If the operating system does not have enough working space and the applications you are using, you will notice a very lagging behaviour.
Older or incompatible softweare can cripple your mac. Do you have any older third-party software installed, that might have installed incompatible kernel extensions?
Aperture might be slow or keep crashing, if you imported a corrupted image or incompatible video,  that cannot be processed. Then Aperture will try over and over again to create previews and never succeed.  You could test for this situation, by launching Aperture with the Shift-key held down. This will defer the generation of previews. If Aperture will launch and work better this way, you probably have some bad media in your photo library.
Another problem to check for is a corruption of your Aperture/iPhoto library. You have run the First Aid Tools to repair the iPhoto Library, but have you ever tried to rebuild the library? See this post by Old Toad: Rebuild iPhoto Version 11

  • I guess I should not have messed with my file sharing pref...now I'm toast

I use my Airport to connect to my DSL.
I was "messing around" with my SHARING configuration (Apple...System Pref....Sharing...) and did something awful. I no longer have wireless connection to my Verizon router. I can hook up and get online (as I'm doing now) with Ethernet , but not Airport.
The Airport ICON is now GREY and has an ARROW (pointing UP) though it. Never seen that before.
And when I click on the icon I can't find my net work. The other Macs in the house work fine with airport.
Verizon tech support could not help.
How can get my Sharing preference back to normal (I was trying and guessing how to connect my other imacs around my home , without really knowing what I was doing. And I did something in there to screw this up).
    Help please
    JON

Sys Prefs Sharing should not have messed up your ability to connect wirelessly to your router.
Click on the  on your menubar, click on "About This Mac" then click on "More Info..." Find "Airport Card" under "Network" and click on it. Does it say something like "No information found" or is your Airport card being recognized? If Airport is recognized as existing, I would next look in Sys Prefs Network, authenticate on the padlock in the lower lefthand corner, click on AIrport then click on Advanced, then check stuff in there, like on the Airport tab, is your home network listed there anymore? Try deleting it and readding it. Under TCP/IP, are you using DHCP (or whatever you use)? Or might it have gotten changed to a setting that is incompatible with your router's settings?
To get the Sharing Prefs "back to normal," just uncheck all of the checkboxes in Sharing and it will be back in its OEM state.

  • I seem to have lost "list view" for my iTunes library.  The option doen't even appear on the view drop down.  Any conncection to iCloud?

I seem to have lost the ability to select list view for my iTunes library.  The choice for lst view doesn't even appear on the drop down when selectiogn "view".  Any ideas?  I recently enabled the cloud and subscribed to iTunes Match/  Any connection?  Thanks/

See this thread for background on why iTunes can end up with duplicates and how they can be systematically removed. The script there is for Windows users and the "show duplicates" menus have moved around in iTunes 11,  but the advice on clearing recently made duplicates should still hold.
As given in my older post "Reorganize library" is meant as a one time command to change the structure of a pre-iTunes 9 library into the newer layout that places music in its own subfolder of the media folder. Once used, if the option becomes available again that suggests that a file called .iTunes Preferences.plist in the media folder has been deleted or editied.

  • I seem to have lost all my photos in iPhoto, error code 36,

I went to open iphoto and received an error message, asking me to restore iphoto. I do have a backup but not sure how to restore. I thought I would just update iphoto with a new version, but my operating system is too old. How do I get all (14,000) photos off this computer. I have tried to transfer my iphoto library to an external hard drive but the 'finder cant complete operation because some data in iphoto cant be read or written - error code 36. please help

You're asking a lot of unrelated questions there, and some of them would interfere with the answers to others.
I went to open iphoto and received an error message, asking me to restore iphoto
What's the exact error message you get?
I do have a backup but not sure how to restore
How to restore depends on how you made the back up?
I thought I would just update iphoto with a new version, but my operating system is too old.
You can update via the Support Downloads, just not to v9.5 or later. But it's probably best to fix the issue before you update.
How do I get all (14,000) photos off this computer.
HOw doees this relate to the error message from iPhoto? What do you want to get off? Just the Photos? Or the iPhoto Library? And to where?
Which questions do you want help with?

  • Newly imported photos in shared iPhoto library have wrong permissions

I have recently encountered some problems with a shared iPhoto '09 library. When I initially shared it by placing it in users/shared iPhoto prompted to fix the permissions and everything was hunky dory. However, it seems that any newly imported photos do not have their permissions set properly so that the other user of the library on my computer can't do useful things like edit or email the newly imported photos.
Looking inside the library reveals that the permissions on newly imported photos are set to read write for me as the owner and no access for 'everyone'. If I hold down cmd-opt and repair permissions it is all fine - until I import some new photos and then the permissions are wrong for those.
I noted this effect on a pristine iPhoto library that I created to test this as well as my venerable iPhoto library.
Is there something I can do to change this behaviour so newly imported photos get the correct permissions set and the shared user of this library (my wife) is able to edit and email photos I import (and, presumably, vice versa)?

I have made changes to permissions to my old library a number of times. Originally this was to enable sharing in earlier versions of iPhoto and it worked fine. For example I've added a group that consists of myself and my wife and given it read and write permissions and applied that to all enclosed items. I've also had iPhoto repair the permissions as per the startup options.
Notwithstanding this, I created a new library in my pictures folder; moved it to the shared folder; switched accounts and allowed iPhoto to repair permissions; switched back and then imported new photos. While most files and folders inside the package are OK (including any modified files and the enclosing originals/year/event folder) the actual original photo files themselves have the permissions problem. This seems to prevent emailing or editing by the other account.

  • Freaking OUT!! I have a desktop (IMac) and my IPhoto library is gone! Events gone, albums gone, faces gone!!! I can't even find the folder for IPhoto Library under Pictures under my hardrive. I have no idea how long it's been this way!

Ok so here's what has happened. I got on the Mac to open IPhoto. It opened, but no files PERIOD! No albums, events, photos, faces. They were all empty. I had TONS of albums and photos. I have no clue how long it's been this way, probably a couple of weeks since I've been on it. Ac couple of things come to mind that might have caused or had something to do with...IPhone 4 had to be restored and a back-up and upgrade occurred. Also, I deleted files off my camera while connected. Not sure the culprit, but VERY UPSET! I have never set up Time Machine and have no other back up. I downloaded and purchased File Salvage but I have to get an external hard drive before it will do it. I put the application install CD in last night thinking that if I reinstalled it would help but then I got scared and shut Mac down half way through. I couldn't even find the file IPhoto Library. When I open IPhoto it say IPhoto 9 but when I "get more info" it says IPhoto 8.1.2 or something like that. Please HELP!!

    Try an All Images Search:
    In the Finder:
    Command - f
    Kind: Images
Size: Greater than 300kb (This is to avoid all the thumbnails, icons and so on.)
Set it to search the Mac.
As to why? The most likely answer is user error, I'm afriad. It does point up the importantce of always having a back up.

  • Do pictures in photo stream have to be downloaded to my iphoto library?

When I look at my iPhoto Library I see photo stream broken down by month.  Do I need to download these pictures so that they show up in Events?

If you want your Photo Stream photos to be automatically imported into iPhoto you need to setup iPhoto's Photo Stream preferences as shown below:
If you're not setup that way now do so and then check after a bit to see how many of the PS photos have been added to your library.  Those that have not can be manually imported into the library by selecting them in the Photo Stream and dragging onto the Events icon in the left hand pane.

  • Is there a way to have iCloud stream into a reference iPhoto library on Mac?

I would like to use iColud to get photos from my iPhone onto my Mac. But, from what I have read, even if you set up your iPhoto library as a referenced library, iCloud imports photos directly into the library rather than storing them on disk as indiviudal and having iPhoto reference them like your other photos. Is this correct, and if so, is there any way around it?

If you are both using the same iCloud account all your calendars will appear on all your devices.
If you are using separate iCloud accounts each of you should share the required calendars privately so the other can subscribe. Please see this page:
    http://help.apple.com/icloud/#mm6b1a9479
and expand 'Share a private calendar or reminder list with specific people'.

  • Latest imac update seems to have messed up disk utility

I just performed (as I always do) the latest apple software update that just popped up on my screen. I did the upgrade (for itunes and quicktime) on both my 1.25 GHz G4 imac (system 10.3.9) and my 10.7 GHz G4 (system 10.3.9).
For both machines I ran disk utility within 15 minutes of the upgrade, having performed no other operations. In both cases, Disk utility failed, giving me the message: "disk utility has lost its connection with disk management tool and cannot continue. Please quit and launch disk utility."
Relaunch was not effective. I ran disk warrior on both computers and it did not help.
Any clues? Seems like the latest updates must have done something crazy to the software.
    Thanks!

OK, I tried running disk utility from the system disk as you suggested. It acted just the same way - froze about 1/3 of the way through. Gave the same error message, and the same scary message that if you stop running disk utility (which one must do since it will not run), then there is a risk of damaging the disk.
Thanks for the help. Any other suggestions?
