Panic Kernel - OS 10.9.5 + Parallels
Hello Community!
My iMac keeps shutting down and restarting twice a week. First I thought it was the power supply that happens to be interrupted every once a while. Now I looked at the report but I don't understand it.
Could anybody please look at it? I would appreciate your help very much!

Is your Parallels up to date? It's possible that Parallels is conflicted by either or both the ZTE driver and/or the SyncMate extension. I would make sure Parallels is current, and uninstall the other two and any third party external devices you are using to test. If the panics stop start adding them back one at a time, testing between each change to be sure that it doesn't panic, until you find the culprit.

Kernel panic "kernel NULL pointer dereference in pacpi_set_dmamode"
Hi. After upgrade to linux-3.6.2-1 my PC fails to boot with this panic: http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/5/imag0085.jpg/ How do I fix it? I can provide more specific info if needed.

It's 404
I fixed the link (dropped the l in html).
glenn69 wrote:How do I accomplish this when I cannot get past boot into the OS?
Boot a live cd and chroot (see the wiki on chrooting).
glenn69 wrote:Also, headkase, which log file are you displaying in your post? I can access my disk via a live cd, but cannot find the appropriate log for my machine.
That's the content of the email that I failed to link to properly.
Does anyone know if there is a bug number for this? I'm experiencing this bug on my MacbookPro 7,1 (2010) too (I am forced to use IDE as sata is not supported on this machine in bios compatibility mode afaik).
The title of this thread is rather non descriptive. How about name it something like:
kernel 3.6 panic ("kernel NULL pointer dereference in pacpi_set_dmamode")

Panic kernel after installing Onyx 2.0
I installed Onyx 2.0, backup the system on Time Capsule and run the "Automation" feature. After that I restarted the computer and got the panic kernel and I was not able to boot. I have a visible mach_kernel.ctfsys file on the HD and the same on the last backup (not on the previous ones). When using the single user mode I get a message "Error loading kernel 'mach_kernel' (0x8000000e)". I tried all possible ways including resetting PRAM, running disk utility, etc. I restored the system with Time Capsule (last backup) and didn't solve the problem. I think it will work on previous ones but like to find an easier solution, if possible since I have 72GB to restore. Thanks
Simply installing Onyx would not cause a problem. All that involves is putting the program into the Applications folder. You might check the panic, console, and crash logs using the Console application in your Utilities folder. The logs may provide useful information on what caused the panic. Visit The XLab FAQs and read the FAQ on diagnosing kernel panics.
If the kernel panics persistently occur during startup that usually means a corruption of some system files or a hardware problem such as bad RAM. You can fix the former by reinstalling OS X:
How to Perform an Archive and Install
An Archive and Install will NOT erase your hard drive, but you must have sufficient free space for a second OS X installation which could be from 3-9 GBs depending upon the version of OS X and selected installation options. The free space requirement is over and above normal free space requirements which should be at least 6-10 GBs. Read all the linked references carefully before proceeding.
1. Be sure to use Disk Utility first to repair the disk before performing the Archive and Install.
Repairing the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (Utilities menu for Tiger.) After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported, then quit DU and return to the installer.
2. Do not proceed with an Archive and Install if DU reports errors it cannot fix. In that case use Disk Warrior and/or TechTool Pro to repair the hard drive. If neither can repair the drive, then you will have to erase the drive and reinstall from scratch.
3. Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When you reach the screen to select a destination drive click once on the destination drive then click on the Option button. Select the Archive and Install option. You have an option to preserve users and network preferences. Only select this option if you are sure you have no corrupted files in your user accounts. Otherwise leave this option unchecked. Click on the OK button and continue with the OS X Installation.
4. Upon completion of the Archive and Install you will have a Previous System Folder in the root directory. You should retain the PSF until you are sure you do not need to manually transfer any items from the PSF to your newly installed system.
5. After moving any items you want to keep from the PSF you should delete it. You can back it up if you prefer, but you must delete it from the hard drive.
6. You can now download a Combo Updater directly from Apple's download site to update your new system to the desired version as well as install any security or other updates. You can also do this using Software Update. -
Panic Kernel Help Please.....I'm Stuck.
Here is the Panic Kernel I am receiving:
http://i39.photobucket.com/albums/e182/state95/IMG_0053.jpg
I removed the 1Gb memory I added about 2 years ago.
I then tried repairing the disk using the First Aid option of the Disk Utility on the Installation Disk.
After receiving several of these errors:
http://i39.photobucket.com/albums/e182/state95/IMG_0052.jpg
This screen then appeared:
http://i39.photobucket.com/albums/e182/state95/IMG_0051.jpg
I'm stuck. What do I do now? I don't have a problem formatting the drive to zeros and then reinstalling the OS but first I want to backup my files. Any idea on how I can do this? Any help is appreciated. Thanks in Advance.
Powerbook G4 Mac OS X (10.3) The Installation Disk just says OS 10.3. I'm not sure if it's 10.3.something though or just 10.3.Hi Deb.
Thanks, once again.
I hope this post will cover the last of my questions.
Previously Corenlius stated the drive I need for the 12" PowerBook is a 2.5" ATA/IDE drive. I found the following Seagate drives in stock at a store near my home. However, I want to make sure they are ATA/IDE drives. According to the website for the store they fall under the category "PATA & IDE drives". When I look at the enlarged photo of the drives I notice the boxes say "Ultra ADA/100".

http://www.bhphotovideo.com/bnh/controller/home?O=6531&A=details&Q=&sku=437315&i s=REG&addedTroughType=categoryNavigation
Do you know if these drives will work for me? If so I'll be deciding between:
- 100Gb @ 7200RPM for 113.95
- 120Gb @ 5400RPM for 109.95
- 160Gb @ 5400RPM for 129.95
Now, hopefully this is my last question.
DiskWarrior built a new directory but could not replace the original directory due to a hard disk malfunctions(which is why I'm purchasing a new hard disk drive). So I used my current PowerBook as a Target Disk and backed up all the data from the Preview Disk DiskWarrior created. Now the folders are all on my current laptop but I cannot open some of them them because I "do not have sufficient access privileges". Do you know how I can change this so I can open them on my current PowerBook?
Thanks,

Panic kernel when I try to instal Tiger
The problem: I cannot install Mac OS X.4.7 on my oldish ibook.
When I insert disc 1, I get the front page of Tiger and install option. I press this and then get a panic kernel page.
The spec: ibook (d usb), PowerPC G3, 600MHz, ATA bus no.2 Dev.0 15GB. vol format either HFS or HFS+.
128MB built in. 512MB added (Crucial 144-PIN SODIMM 64x64 SYNC PC133).
Firmware update not needed as per this website. Did install update 4.1.7 just in case and computer told me not neeeded.
Current OS Z1-9.2.2 Active enabler OS ROM 8.9.1
Also has OS X.1.2 installed. I am trying to install Tiger from OS 9 though as recommended.
I have zappped the parameter RAM and also carried out a Disk First Aid which reports OK.
The installation disk has been checked for damage which seems fine as only used twice on my new Imac. There are no peripheral devices attached.

I think roam's analysis is correct, as you wrote "When I insert disc 1..."
The Full Retail Version, of the Tiger Install DVD, is one DVD.
You also wrote "The installation disk has been checked for damage which seems fine as only used twice on my new Imac."
Are the discs the system discs for the iMac?
Tiger is available for purchase at The Apple Store (U.S.).
If you know what to look for, a Full Retail Version, of the Tiger Install DVD, can also be purchased rather inexpensively, at some online Apple retailers, Amazon, eBay, AppleRescue, FastMac, etc.
As you have discovered, be sure not to purchase grey, upgrade or machine specific CDs or DVDs.
Unless purchased from AppleRescue, the discs should look exactly like the images in the above links, and not say Upgrade on them.
Additional info in these links.
Using OS X Install CDs/DVDs On Multiple Macs
What's A Computer Specific Mac OS X Release
Software Update, Upgrade: What's The Difference?
If your Mac meets the Tiger System Requirements, once Tiger 10.4.x is installed, you can use the PPC 10.4.9 Combo Update, to upgrade to the current version.
Additionally, "Tiger ships on a DVD, but if your Mac doesn’t have a built-in DVD-ROM player, you’ll need CD media. When you buy Mac OS X Tiger, you qualify to purchase Tiger CDs for only $9.95."
Download the Media Exchange Program Order Form Here.
Orders must be mailed by June 22, 2007.
AppleRescue, also sells a Tiger installation set on CD.

Hi
I have a case of panic kernel attack, since a couple of days ago I can no longer put my machine to sleep, a message pops up telling me I need to reboot. I have had this machine for over a year and not a glitch, now this began to happen. Below is the log of the error, I tried starting the machine on safe mode but boot up was no successful on that mode.
Any ideas what could be wrong?

I suggest you also try booting into safe mode and operating that way for a while to see if the panics cease. Note that wireless will not work in safe mode. Report back what happens. -
Here's what happened and I hope y'all can give me some solutions -
My computer was running slowly so I reset the PRAM like what's been suggested on the boards here. It really helped to speed up the computer and I got it to boot and got into it (which I hadn't been able to do). I was trying to synch my iPhone and got the message that iTunes needed to be updated. I clicked okay and then I got a message that Mountain Lion needed an update. I clicked okay - this morning I am unable to get the computer to boot (except for in the safe mode boot). I get a panic kernel trap message
After this message displays, the computer then restarts on its own and displays this kernel trap message again. I have not been able to boot the computer today at all. Is there any way to boot the computer and get around this message? I am trying to get the computer to load so I can save my music and photos in the case that I have to erase the drive and re-install software. I don't have any disk to use to reformat my computer since I downloaded Mountain Lion through the iTunes Store. So any advice on how to fix my computer would be greatly appreciated. I just don't know how to proceed in order to get my computer fixed.
Thanks guys!!I stand corrected: I cannot boot up in safe mode. I get the panic kernel trap that comes up and the computer restarts on its own. It has gone through this loop of saying there was a problem and the computer must restart, then it restarts and displays this message and restarts again.
I am only able to access the disk utilties, nothing else. So I'm pretty sure the only thing I will be able to do is reinstall the OS. I'm not sure how i can do that when I don't have a disk to use though. Hopefully someoone has some idea that will help me.
Thanks again!

about a 2 week problem now:
I've uninstalled the iPod software and reinstalled it. I've done disk permissions, cache cleaning, repaired disk permissions....uninstalled OS X and then reinstalled.
Funny...it's my iPod. Because when I plug my digital camera into the USB port, I don't get a Panic Kernel. I cant reset my iPod and clear it out because to do so I have to plug it in.
So know I have all of 84 songs on a machine that's supposed to carry 7,500. Useless. And all the music came from my CD's.I took it to Apple today. They gave me a new one at no chrage. I spoke with the manager of the store and I had him test it. I wanted someone a little higher up that had some good knowledge.
He came to the conclusion that the iPod had a faulty hard drive. And it wasn't my fault. And the 1-10-06 Updater didn't help either.
Problem solved. -
I have a Mac Air Book. I started it up and it told me there were updates. I clicked on it and got a panic kernel. It is frozen. Restarting does not fix it.
If you can't boot in the usual way, try a safe boot. During startup, you’ll see a progress bar, and then the login screen, which appears even if you normally log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin. If you have more than one user account, you must be logged in as an administrator to carry out these instructions. Safe mode is slower than normal, and some things won’t work at all. Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the startup volume is on a software RAID, you can’t boot in safe mode. If you're able to boot, launch the Console application in any of the following ways: ☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.) ☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens. ☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid. Select the most recent panic report (with a name that begins with "Kernel" and ends in ".panic") under the heading System Diagnostic Reports on the left. If you don't see that heading, select
View ▹ Show Log List
from the menu bar. Post the entire contents of the report — the text, please, not a screenshot. In the interest of privacy, I suggest you edit out the “Anonymous UUID,” a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header and body of the report, if it’s present (it may not be.) Please don't post any other kind of diagnostic report, such as a hang report. -
New IMac is crashing randomly because of "Panic Kernel Error." Now IMac startup disk is not visible and will not mount. What the story with this machine. Running 10.6.7
Almost certainly, some sort of hardware problem on your logic board.
Make an appointment and take it to your local Apple Store: http://www.apple.com/retail/geniusbar/ -
Hi
I'm new to the Forum, and understand I may be able to solve an 8 month occurance of Panic Kernels and unexplainable crashes with my G4.
I run Logic Pro, have an Airport, have to use web-based mail because the Mac Mail application crashes since last year and I'm not sure how to reinstall it. I wrote down the last panic kernel message which could be useful to someone who understands it, perhaps?
Appreciate any input!FJ has some good KP tips.
Or, do everything, in order, in Dr.Smokes Resolving Kernel Panics and don't leave out any steps (most used KP site in the forums).
Quote from Dr.Smoke "My FAQ is a roadmap: start at the beginning and work through to the end, following the instruction in the order specified, including the "If all else fails..." section if a cause or resolution is not found in an earlier troubleshooting step therein"
Here's more at a brody's KP site.
Here's a link to Smokes repair thread. It includes an easy to follow section on repairing your hard drive with disk utility (which may solve your problem).
Cheers!

My G5-Quad had a kernel panic this afternoon.
Two attempts to reboot normally eventually ended in the gray box with the well-known multilingual instructions to restart the machine, obvious signs of further kernel panics.
Two attempts at running applejack in safe mode (Command S) were aborted by the machine shortly after it started checking stuff with a message like "Release the PPC, we are hanging here".
Now it doesn't even boot in safe mode. On an occasional try, a white screen with some small black text but does not accept any commands.
Then it just wont boot. It sounds normal for a while, then the fans and pump spring into heavy action.
I opened the optical drive with the straightened heavy paper clip (only way to open it) and put the AHT test, tried holding the Option key, but the same behavior persists: no signal sent to the monitor, then it sounds normal for a while, then the fans and pump spring into heavy action again.
The first time I got the kernel panel, I was able to copy the crash report, but now I can't even get at it.
I'm working on my Mac Pro Quad right now.
I hadn't had any trouble whatsoever with the PPC G5-Quad in so long, that I've practically forgotten all about troubleshooting a PPC (getting more "senior" by the day, with brain damage caused by a series of mini strokes; diabetic type 2)
Any ideas as to what to do next? I do need Classic and a PPC CPU to run a lot of irreplaceable and indispensable software that does not run on Intel machines.
If I can't fix this machine, I'll probably be looking for an exact replica of this (July, 2006) PPC G5-Quad. Hope to move RAM and cards, etc.
2.5 GHz Power Mac (PPC) G5-Quad; 16GB RAM; mutant, flashed 550MHz nVidia GeForce 7800GTX 1,700MHz 512MB VRAM; ATTO ExpressPCI UL5D LP SCSI card; Mac OS X Tiger 10.4.11 and Leopard 10.5.8 boot drives; intrusive Spotblight, Dashboard and Time Machine permanently disabled; dual 22" CRT monitors; USB wireless 'n' available but connected to the Internet via wired Ethernet; FW flatbed scanner; 2 SCSI scanners (one tabloid-size transparency scanner and a film scanner); various internal & external HDs; FW Epson 2200 and Ethernet Samsung ML-2850ND printers; 2 X Back-UPS RS 1500 XS units. When looking through my Dropbox, I was delighted to find that I had the good sense to save there the two crash report from my earliest kernel panic yesterday and one of the subsequent ones, before I could no longer boot.
