Panic screen in mac mini after ox 10.8
I´m having a really bad time after upgrading to Mountain Lion in my Mac Mini (Early 2009). Crushing and panic screen!!. I´ve tried some solutions but can´t find one that solves the problem. HELP!!!
Bootup holding CMD+r, or the Option/alt key to boot from the Restore partitirion & use Disk Utility from there to Repair the Disk.
Then reinstall the OS.

Anyone know when Apple will bring out a patch to fix the volume problem you get on mac mini after downloading OS 10.8.5?
Only Apple knows the answer to whether or not there is a verified problem and if so when will a fix be released. As is their custom, Apple does not talk about these things and the rules of these communities prohibit speculation about future udates or upgrades. It is probably safe to say if a fix is deemed necessary it will be called OS X 10.8.6.

Use 24 in iMac as a screen for mac mini
Can I use 24 in iMac as screen for mac mini?
I can see that there is no way to use the iMac screen thru standard methods. As the iMac is out of warranty and the DVD/CD drive no longer works I am willing to have the iMac's case opened and have some jerry-rigged solution installed. Does anyone have an idea as to how that can be done

One way to test is to Safe Boot from the HD, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, Test for problem in Safe Mode...
PS. Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive
Reboot, test again.
If it only does it in Regular Boot, then it could be some hardware problem like Video card, (Quartz is turned off in Safe Mode), or Airport, or 3rd party add-on, Check System Preferences>Accounts>Login Items window to see if it or something relevant is listed.
Check the System Preferences>Other Row, for 3rd party Pref Panes.
Also look in these if they exist, some are invisible...

Screen is dim on my Mac Mini after installing 10.6.3 update
Has anyone else encountered this problem? My Mac Mini was running just fine until I installed 10.6.3. After the reboot the display came up very dim. The icons and overall display are noticeably darker and playing a flash video (Hulu) results in an image that can barely be seen because it is nearly black. This is both with a direct DVI connection as well as through a DVI to VGA adapter. The same symptom is displayed on my ViewSonic monitor as well as my Sony HD TV (through the VGA port).
Mac OS X 10.6.3
2 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
Intel GMA 950 built-in video card (64 MB of memory)
1024 x 768 @ 60Hz, 32 bit color
There isn't much to change in System Preferences -> Display and I tried adjusting the contrast (System Preferences -> Universal Access -> Enhance Contrast) but nothing seems to help.
Any suggestions or recommendations would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Keaton

Blank screen on Mac Mini running Boot Camp 3.1 with XP SP3
After upgrading from 3.0 to 3.1 of Boot Camp I now am getting a blank screen after Windows finishes it's loading screen.
Booting to safe mode works.
I have tried uninstalling 3.1 and reverting back to 3.0, but the issue remains. Reinstalling 3.1 again also gives the same error.
I uninstalled and reinstalled 2.1 (from a older system disk I had around) and the issue seems to be resolved however the refresh of items and windows on the screen are very slow.
I have isolated the issue to the NVidia drivers, however I am unable to find any besides the bootcamp ones that seem to work. I've read through the forums and people have mentioned downloading drivers for other models but not the Mac Mini.
So, two questions that would be very helpful in my quest to fix this:
1) Anyone know where to get the latest working Nvidia drivers for the new Mac Mini (besides bootcamp)
2) Anyone have a good utility or know of a good cleanup utility to get rid of all the previous nvidia drivers all over the place and in the registry? I read about a few, but it would be nice to know which ones actually work with bootcamp/xp, etc.
Thanks for any assistance on this!
- DavidI fixed it. All I had to do was change the output to the Cirrus audio device instead of the ATI.

Problems to connect with VNC to headless mac mini after sleep mode
Hallo,
I've a Mac Mini (late 2009) setup with Lion Server. I want to use it without mouse/keyboard/monitor attached. Since I want to safe power ( green IT ;-) ), I would like to use sleep mode.
First thing I've learned is, that Lion Server prevents the mini to go to sleep after an idel time as set in power saving.
The only thing that works, is setting up a shedule with sleep / wakeup times.
When I start the mini, everything works great. I can connect via VNC. The Mini goes to sleep at the scheduled time and wakes up again as expected.
From this time on, things begin to get strange:
I can connect using VNC, but all i get is a grey screen with a moving cursor. So VNC is working, but there is no screen available on the Mini. Same if I use thightVNC from a Windwos PC. Get a grey screen.
Further the system does NOT go to sleep at scheduled times any longer.
I was able to track down the problem to the missing monitor: If the Mini wakes up without a monitor connected, I seems to wait to get the right resolution or what ever. All servives are working, SSH is fine even VNC works, but shows only a grey screen.
I've been playing with attaching / detaching a monitor. Sometimes I got:
- Boot with monitor
- connect with VNC, see login screen
- send Mini to sleep
- disconnect monitor
- wakeup Mini
- VNC reconnects, showing grey screen
- plug in monitor and wait until login screen appears on the monitor
- VNC switches from grey to login screen
The only way I can save some energy is a sheduled shutdown / restart. So headless works, but not after waking up from sleep.
Any hint or solutions for this ?
Thanks

Screen flicker Mac Mini i5 2.3GHz 2011 ?
Hi people,
Does anybody else also experiences screen flicker on the Mac Mini i5 2.3GHz 2011 model, during startup from sleep-mode or a cold-boot in the morning?
I posted a video on YouTube, to visualize the problem (otherwise hard to imagine, perhaps):
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5sbAhjlfN_M
Room temperature is about 15 degrees Celsius (Europe, wintertime) and the problem exposes itself when the machine is powered up after a nights sleep, or during a cold boot in the morning, the screen flashes from like the same in the YT movie, but then with the grey background and Apple-logo on it, continuing until the working desktop appears and then flashes some few more times, until "warmed-up".
When the Mac has woke up during the day, room temperature about 23-25 degrees Celsius, the screen doesn't flicker at all, or at max. 1-2 times.
The main screen (on the YT movie) is connected through Thunderbolt with an original Apple-brand mini-DisplayPort to DVI convertor and the secondary screen through a (with the Mac Mini facilitated) HDMI -> DVI convertor.
The second screen always lags a little behind the main screen and the desktop appears when the main screen desktop has fully appeared, so no flickering on the second screen noticed, till so far.
Setup:
-Mac Mini i5 2.3GHz, model 2011 with a Kingston V+100 96GB SSD and 8GB Corsair RAM 1333MHz;
-Main screen: Thunderbolt -> DVI, Dell 2005 FPW 20" IPS-panel @1680x1050;
-Secondary screen: HDMI -> DVI, Dell 1704FPT 17" TN-panel @1280x1024.
A SMC-reset and PRAM-reset didn't help, contacted Apple-support which recommended to download the generic Thunderbolt-patch DL1451, which I later recognized in my Software-update list in MacOS, as already download in October 2011, named/tagged: Thunderbolt 1.1
The Mac is already running the latest firmware, EFI 1.4 (the machine is brand new, so expected no less then the latest to be honest.)
Next step I'm going to try is: switch the screens on HDMI <-> Thunderbolt (didn't try that yet.)
Never experienced this with my Mac Mini's 2009 before (had two of them, first the 2.0GHz and later the 2.26GHz- big Mac Mini fan overhere!), running the same setup (but then on Mini-DVI & Mini-DisplayPort.)
It really feels like the internals of the Mac Mini 2011 have to warm-up, before fully functional...the Apple specs give me an operating temperature of 10-35 degrees, I'm not living in a cave, neither I accidentally forgot to turn off the air-conditioning system after the summer ended, so what the hack?
Reminds at my childhood, the time we still used B/W television @my parents home with kathode/anode-tubes in it, they also needed some time to "warm-up" before presenting a stabile image ;-)Did you find a solution? I have the same hardware and same problem. I dont connect via thunderbolt, just the DVI-cable supplied by Apple to my TFT monitor. But without any hardware changes or updates it started a few days ago.

Disable screen saver - Mac mini with OS X version 10.6.4
I am trying to disable the screen saver on a Mac Mini with Mac OS X version 10.6.4.
I have tried to disable it from System Preferences setting it to "never" and I have tried as well using the "defaults" command to set the idleTime in com.apple.screensaver to 0. Unfortunately, the screen saver starts after 20 minutes.
I have checked and there is no process with a name similar to screen saver.
Thank you in advance for your help,
AntonioHi dkaramit,
Thank you for your answer. The energy settings are set to never. I checked it as well with pmset -g. In addition, the screen saver in the com.apple.screensaver plist file appears after 20 minutes of inactivity.

Gray screen on mac mini - how can i fix? won't boot up. Help!
I have been getting a gray screen on my mac mini - has apple symbol in the middle and moving gear below it. Doesn't go any farther than that. Have tried unplugging everything and rebooting, removed all extras that were plugged in, went to a wired (non apple) mouse and keyboard, tried the "shift" while booting up. Can anyone help me get this mini up and running again? Don't remember getting a start up disc with it so I can't reboot using the disc. Help!
Reinstalling Lion/Mountain Lion Without Erasing the Drive
Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the main menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion: Select Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion and click on the Continue button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is three times faster than wireless. -
Ethernet adapter not working with new Mac Mini after NetRestore.
I'm currently working with an issue regarding Mini 4,1s and their difference from the main driver set in 10.6.4. I'm in an educational environment and attempting to effectively netrestore a hard drive image that was built on a Mini 3,1 with all possible updates made to the OS (10.6.4).
The new minis have no problem netbooting, and downloading the disc image from the server *over ethernet*. In fact, they do it in a very rapid fashion. The issue is that once the machines boot up, they no longer have ethernet capabilities. In fact, the ethernet device does not even appear in system profiler at all. After reading quite a lot about this problem, it appears that there is a difference in the driver set on the special "Mid-2010 Mini 4,1" update and the driver set found in a normal 10.6.4 install.
I have attempted various permutations of installing the Mid-2010 update, but most of them include having an existing 10.6.4 install that was not built on the Mini, and attempting to install the update over the install, or replacing the driver in suspect itself. The issue persists.
Is there something I'm missing, and is this a common problem?
tl;dr: non mac mini 10.6.4 installation copied on mac mini 4,1, and ethernet drivers don't work. Thanks for your suggestion, I cloned my 1.83GHZ Mac Mini's main drive with Carbon Copy Cloner and restored it onto a new 2.4GHZ Mac Mini. Since the new Mac was replacing the older one's mother ship role in my HTPC setup, this method would ensure the easiest transition. Everything works fine, except that ethernet wont work, it did before, but doesn't now. I already tried several confirmed-working-by-me cables and no luck.
I tried your step and understand the logic behind them, but as soon as I replaced my files with the ones you suggested from my 2.4GHZ Mac Install Disc, the system reports some conflicts. I repaired permissions after and before this happens (tried twice, once after successfully restoring via Tim Machine) and still it occurred. After reboot Ethernet was still dead and so was WiFi. Luckily I was able to get everything back to normal by replacing the entire Extensions folder with the one prior to the changes. Restoring the two files alone would not do it.
Any other suggestions?
Thanks. -
Unfortunately my Mac Mini I use for audio production work and web design got slower and slower until one day it just gave up! I blame the internet for this, as before I started using the internet on this computer it was fine, nice and fast without any problems.
I tried reinstalling just the OSX but that didn't work, so I ended up erasing the disk with a full 35-pass option which failed itself after the eleventh pass, but it had still done what I wanted and completely erased the hardisk, so I wasn't bothered. However, now in Utilities, it wasn't finding any hardisk!!! I powered off and thankfully this time the disk was showing and so I tried installing the OSX again and this time it worked!
Next it was time to reinstall iLife that had come with the Mac Mini. No chance! Same error message every time to contact the software manufacturer!!! I've read on the communities that after 2012 this version of iLife apparently doesn't work. Is this true? If so then Apple is ripping customers off. Why should we have to keep upgrading all the time? As the old saying goes, "if it ain't broken, don't fix it!" If this is true that iLife won't work after 2012 then basically Apple is saying that its products are so crap that they won't work after a few years!! Surely not. I've also read in the communities that one person had to pay another $18 out for an iLife suite that works, what crap! Whatever came with the computer should work with the computer and not be limited to just a few years life and we shouldn't have to pay out for another disc when the original has be kept securely in its original packaging! I have an old Windows XP PC which is still going strong today and up until a year ago I had an old Windows 3.1 PC which was still working 22 years after purchase and I still had occasional tasks to carry out on it at DOS level!!
So I'm beginning to wonder whether I should go back to PCs if Apple computers have such a limited lifespan.
I look forward to your comments.Processor = 2.4GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
Within seconds of selecting the disk and clicking on the install button the following error message comes up:
The installation failed.
An unknown installation error occurred.
The Installer encountered an error that caused the installation to fail. Contact the software manufacturer for assistance. -
Hello, My mac mini will not boot. When I turn it on, I get the chime, then the white screen, then the apple symbol, then a file symbol with a question mark, then the white screen and then it stays like that.
Is this a bad hard drive?Sounds like it. Try booting from your OSX restore DVDs - startup and hold down "C". This will take AGES! Then run Disk Utility from the menu.
The flashing ? means your system is corrupt, dead, not there, on a dying HD, etc... -
I believe I've experienced this problem before, but cannot remember the exact solution. The previous solution was deleting a file in the Mac OS (possibly even the finder? but that sounds worrisome), then restarting.
I am using a Mac Mini 2.5 GHz i5, with 16GB of recently installed (within the last 3 months) 3rd-party RAM, loaded with Mac OS 10.8.4.
Recently, I received a DMCA letter from Comcast (my second), which just seemed impossible to me, so I decided to actually take their advice and install Norton. Why? Because I'm a moron. After all, my network is locked down with WPA2, I have an encrypted Time Machine drive connected to my 3rd Gen Airport Extreme, and encrypt my Mini when logged out (which happens after 15 minutes of inactivity). In brief, there's no way Comcast's letter was correct. But to be sure, I installed Norton.
Almost immediately, crappy internet connectivity ensued. My Wifi signal was always strong, but my computer struggled to connect to the outside internet. So, after a week of wondering, I finally uninstalled Norton (using their uninstall application found online).
Still, my Internet connection was (and is) crap. Here are the steps I've already taken to resolve the issue:
1. I called Comcast and asked them to check on their end. They conducted a reset from their end, which seemed to improve my connection, but only temporarily. It has since resumed a slow connection that sometimes drops out.
2. I tried my network with other devices: 2 iPads, 2 iPhones, and one Macbook Air all have excellent internet connectivity. As I write this, my Mini struggles to load Comcast's speed test site, but my iPhone is pulling down near 30 Mbps.
3. I have connected my Mini to another, neighboring Wifi, and it works like a charm. Fast Internet, no cutting out.
4. I loaded Time Machine, and restored my system to its pre-Norton state. Still, the Internet connectivity is poor.
5. I have created a new network on my Airport Extreme. While my iPhone still pulls down a great connection, my Mini chokes on it.
The only things I can think to do from here is to Factory Reset my Airport (which I don't see as a plausible solution, since all my other devices connect through it just fine), wipe my Mini and start over (not a realistic solution for my business), or throw it out the window entirely, then stomp up and down on it (this won't fix my Internet issue, but I might feel better).
Thoughts? I KNOW it's an easy fix, but I just can't remember what it was. The same thing happened to me a couple of years ago with another Macbook, and it was a simple file deletion and restart.
Thanks in advance for your help.Alright, I think I might've actually solved my own problem. Here's what I did (for anyone out there with the same/similar issue):
Open System Preferences and click on the Network pane.
Select Airport in the list to the left and click the minus button below to temporarily delete it.
Restart your Mac.
Go to the Network section of System Preferences again, this time pressing the plus button towards the bottom of the window.
Select Airport from the Interface menu, leave “Airport” as the default name, and click Create.
Select your WiFi network, and enter your password.
My speed is back up to speed, so fingers crossed that this works! -
Cant use my Ipad with my Mac Mini after updating Ipad OS
So after upgrading my ipad2 to the latest OS, it now will no longer communicate with my older mac mini. I open itunes on the mac with the ipad attached and it says I have to update to the 11.1 version of itunes to access the ipad. But my Mini Mac only runs Mac Os 10.5.8 (try to do a software update but it says everything is up to date) which is below the system reqs for the new itunes. Did apple just screw me? I like to put songs and what not from my computer onto my ipad, and likewise get video from my ipad onto the computer. Does anyone know a workaround? I wouldnt like to revert the ipad back to the older version because I recall having some other issue where I was forced to upgrade it.
Choose About this Mac from the Apple menu and check the processor.
If it's a PowerPC Mac, you can't sync the device, but depending on your country, may be able to download iTunes Store purchases straight onto it and/or sign up for iTunes Match.
If it's an Intel Mac, click here, install the DVD, and run Software Update twice.
