Panisonic HDX900 1080 vs 720 for 24P

I am going to be shooting and posting a project for a client in the next month and they would like a high-quality "film-look" HD capture to be delivered on DVD. I have shot some test footage with the HDX900. My issue came in ingesting the footage shot under 1080 - 59.94 24PA. I am using Panny's AJ-HD 1200AP deck over FW. My version of FCP (5.0.4) doesn't have a DVCProHD 1080 24PA Easy Setup. I captured with the DVCProHD 108060i Easy Setup and selected the "Remove Advanced Pulldown from 25 50 Sources" but the stuff comes in at 29.97. I've been reading (a lot) in the forums about dealing with 24PA in DV, but I haven't come across anything dealing with this 1080 24PA flavor from the HDX900. Here come the questions:
1) Is it better just to shoot the 720 24P with this camera (which looks great) since I have been reading that the 1080 on the HDX900 is a blow up anyway?
2) Capturing over FW with the AJ-HD1200AP from any of the DVCProHD formats I tested with the HDX900 have given me (in brief instances) an error E-02 (High Error Rate). Is this a problem with the deck? I have read in another thread on CCow there may be some confusion about the ability of this deck to properly playback the HDX900's tapes.
3) Am I stupid in not upgrading to the Universal App of FCP? There was some concerns from another editor in-house that is would run slower on our Power PC machine.
Thanks for any posts...

I'm currently doing a project from the HDX900. I've captured with pulldown removal of the 720 source to a firewire 800 g-raid with no problems and pulldown does get removed properly. We chose to shoot in 720 due to concerns about 1080 out of that cam. And it does look great. I'm also running the universal FCP on a dual 2.7 G5 with no problem.
If you want the "film look" the a great piece of advice is to get a lens adapter and use film lenses. That makes a world of difference!

  • Convert HD 1080 to 720 for ATV playback

    Hi there
Hoping for some help. I have some mp4 1080 movies that load and play fine in iTunes. But they won't transfer to Apple TV as the max resolution os 720.
Aside from QuickTime Pro and Perian (I just get a b/w blanked screen) or Handbrake (no sound), could anyone recommend some conversion software.
As I say, to convert the mp4 from 1080 to 720 to enable the ATV transfer
    Thanks very much.

handbrake should work (assuming you use the appletv preset). also make sure you are using the latest release (0.9.3).
    you could also try MPEGStreamClip.

  • 1080 or 720 import export choice

i think i must not understand 1080 and 720 HD. i'm a 4:3 SD man, never had any issues with PP-CS2,3. but i have a Canon XHA1 camera, love it having moved from an XL1, and now feel like everything should be shot at the biggest number...bigger is better?...so i have it all set to 1080. we're PAL here, by the way. so when i import from the camera to PP-CS3 it goes in fine, like normal video but wider, 16:9, no worries. yep. then i will build a sequence of cuts and export them as an avi to reimport it as a full edit sequence back in to the project add to the still working mix of other cuts. this is the way i work, i cut, build and export scene sequences then in the final cut mix all the sequences as avi exports then export the lot as one final cut movie. works for me as i often have to apply correction/effects on sequences for the type of work i do...then mix them (and matching audio)
HOWEVER, when i export a sequence and reimport it it will show up SMALL inside the safety margins of the monitor out preview window, like i've exported a web mpeg or something, which i haven't. duh.. i have to drag it out to fit the preview monitor frame and this creates distortion sometimes, like i've cropped and stretched out the pixels. yerk!. this is all while importing-as and working-in 1080 and exporting as 1080. frustrating and is annoying to all get-out. maybe i should go to EDIUS to edit...? is 720 any different? better? go back to SD?
any fixes or sympathies out there? thanks in advance...

thanks. this makes sense and the maths are very difinitive. in a world of virtual physics, however, the anomolie exists, "why" does it come into the monitor preview window "pre-shrunk" as if it might have come from the discount bin at GAP?
i am not so much asking you in particular, mr isaacs, to respond. but it is more a general query regarding the intended export and resultant import being contrary responses to the export request inside the premiere school which i have to say i have never found to be very academic. but i do appreciate your attention to this. unlike many people around me where i live, i Do do numbers and enjoy exploring the relationships between X and Y. however, on a pedestrian, albeit domestic note, for us here in Oz it is school holidays and it is saturday evening and i now have to go out to the pub for dins with the boat people who use this place as a yachting holiday destination with their littlies. i look forward to whatever might be here when i return in three hours. otherwise i will apply the 1.33 code tomorrow.
    cheers, sir, et al,

  • Shooting with both 1080 and 720 settings on location?

    Hello,
I'm new to video world. 7D has been my camera for photography and now I'm interested in using it to do some video as well. I've been reading and searching a lot online lately and was wondering if below is the best way to approach an on-location shoot:
    1. Shoot with 'mainly 1920x1080 (24fps)' setting and 'switch to 1280x720 (60fps) setting' for the part which I know I will use the footage for 'slow motion'
    2. After finish shooting, bring all footages to CS5 premiere and use '1920x1080 (24fps)' sequence/timeline to process footages shot with both 1080 and 720 settings.
    3. Use the 'Interpret Footage' function to slow down the footage shot with 1280x720 setting and make it 24fps
Would this strategy work well or should I do the entire shoot with just '1280x720 (60fps)' setting and still use the '1920x1080 (24fps)' timeline in CS5?
Thank you for any help that you could provide as I'm eager to learn!

I think your question involves a couple of misconceptions:
assuming you're referring to Canon 7D, OnLocation does not support that camera to the best of my knowledge. For live monitoring and recording, OL works only with devices that output via Firewire (IEEE 1394), which I don't believe is true of the 7D.
while PPRO's Interpret Footage feature can serves the purpose of making a clip play in slow motion, that's not it's intent. Moreover, Premiere has better ways of achieving the goal, namely the Time Remapping feature and the Rate Stretch tool. Rather than attempting to explain those features here, I'll simply urge you to read the page in the help titled "Change speed and duration for one or more clips" (Home / Using Adobe Premiere Pro CS5 / Effects and transitions / Duration and speed)
As to your most basic question of what resolution and framerate to shoot, I'm not the best person to answer that, and the OnLocation forum is probably not the best place to get an answer. I'd suggest either the Premiere Pro forum here on Adobe.com or a more general forum such as dvinfo.net, creativecow.net, or dvxuser.com.

  • HVX200 users 1080 or 720?

I have shot only in 720. Using both 720p and 720pn.
Big shoot coming up and wanted to shoot in 1080. How is FCP2 handling the 1080 footage any reason to stay with 720? I used it initally in 720pn mode to save space.
    Pros and Cons?
    Thanks!

    Hey Michele,
1080 and 720 should match pretty good on the esthetics side of things. We've mixed slo-mo 720 (hvx200) into our normal 1080p (HDX900) workflow. I'm not too sure about the canon camera, but when we use 720 we're using an hvx200. I did notice in our tests that the hvx 200's 1080 kinda was umm... politely : sub par. You might have to consider how it will visually match and go with an all 720 workflow.
Having said that, 1080p rocks and the hvx200's 720 slo-mo matches pretty nicely, but we have a high end colour correct facility to make sure that happens.
    Hope it helps.

  • Graphics for 24P

Is there an effective way to create graphics in Motion for 24P footage that doesn't look like video graphics?
For example, I want to create a lower third for an interview shot in 24P. When I use LiveType, the lower third background and text look like video. Is there a way to manipulate the color or other characteristics (in Motion or LiveType) so that it matches the color and motion characteristics of 24P footage?

You just need to create your project with a frame rate of 23.98 (the effective frame rate for 24P as used by video cameras) and field rendering turned off.
There's no preset for that, but you can quickly create it by modifying the mentioned attributes from the DV NTSC preset.
One related comment, though. While field rendering is usually associated with the video look for footage, animations rendered as "progressive" suffer from a lack of temporal resolution that often creates strobe-like motion. So there's a compromise there, beyond the oversimplification of terms like "film look", "video look", etc.

  • Realtime effects become jerky after being rendered for 24p HD video

    Hello,
Any one comes across that for 24p HD Video clips, e.g. just adding a "cross-dissolve" as the transition between two clips (I have tried both uncompressed and ProRes 422 HQ). Before rendering, the realtime effects (green in color) plays perfectly across. However, after render realtime or render all, we find that there will be once that the video becomes jerkly about at the "out" point of the "cross-dissolve". The same result to the video recorded when "print-to-video" or "edit-to-tape".
The only work-around is to either export the whole sequence to a quicktime movie, OR adding a dummy "Quicktime" effect filter into the both video clips and render all effects. Both methods are very time consuming, as it is video footage
Also, this problem seems happen to 24p only, not 50i or 60i. I wonder there is any error in calculating and making the render file of the effect for 24p.
    Software configuration:
10.4.10, Final Cut Pro 6.0.1, Quicktime (most updated), KONA3 driver 4.0 (actually this problem happens to BMD MultiBridge/DeckLink Systems too)
Is it a "known" bug in FCP? or anyone get similar problem but have a solution to it?
    Thanks.
    Regards,
    Golden

Hmmm....odd. I only saw this with P2 footage that was imported with FCP 5.0.4 and used in projects since upgraded to FCP 5.1. That little jitter at the end. I had that. I had to reimport all my footage under FCP 5.1.1 and it went away.
But that is NOT what you are dealing with...same issue, different footage, different version of FCP.
    Got me.

  • Capturing OfflineRT for 24p Advanced?

    Hey guys,
I've been searching the forum for an answer, but I haven't been able to find anything too clear. I've decided to edit a feature I'm current working on with OfflineRT due to the 100's of hours already shot/still to be shot for the project. Director wants access to everything. But since it's low budget, we definitely don't have the space to have any of it on-line. Can somebody recommend what settings are necessary to capture and edit 24pa anamorphic footage (we want to output to film eventually) using OfflineRT on FCP5?
    Thanks!!

No, it's not working for me. And I'm certain it is user error. For one thing, in order to capture with the pulldown being removed, do you absolutely have to use the source camera? Because we have it attached to a regular DV deck and it's absolutely refusing to check that part of the preset. Second, the capture preset for OfflineRT NTSC 24p (23.98) is GENERIC CAPTURE TEMPLATE.... with no real sign of anything for 24p. It's really frustrating that this isn't as simple as it could be. At this point, I don't really care about it being anamorphic... but I'd like to get the darn thing actually capturing at 24fps (23.98... or something!) Ugh!

  • Best bitrate/frame rate for 1080 and 720 HD?

What seems to be the best bit rate and frame rate to use for
HD video for best playback on a Mac Mini. Plan on using H.264 encoder
to be compatible with iTunes, etc. (I like iTunes for consolidating all my media).
I have downloaded several movies from iTunes, both HD and SD, and they all
    look great and playback smoothly.
I will be using a 32" Samsung HDTV.

FWIW, I've been working on a 720p project and have found the "proxy" on the cinema display pretty good for judging focus. We thought we found some material with soft focus and actually took it to a post house to look at the tape on a CRT. It was out of focus.
If I remember correctly, I think Decklink made an adapter that would allow you to view HD material on the cinemadisplay. Maybe someone else can pipe up with the specifics. Someone else also recently posted this link: http://www.matrox.com/video/products/mxo/home.cfm.

  • 1080 and 720 in same sequence

I will be shooting next project using two differnt cameras, one only shoots 1080 p footage and I usually use 720 24p with my Panasonic HVX 200.
Can i use these two differnet settings in the same sequence? The Panasonic does shoot at 1080, but I am trying to avoid having huge files. Canon 5D mark 11 doesn't shoot 720 24p.

    >But make SURE you shoot 1080p 24pA,....IS iTHIS IS THE SETTING FOR THE CANON?
No...I said: "So I wouldn't worry about shooting 1080p with the HVX.  But make SURE you shoot 1080p 24pA,"  This is a setting on the PANASONIC.
    >SO EVEN THOUGH SHOT AT 30FPS WILL INGEST TO 24P?     If you want FCP to remove pulldown, NO IDEA WHAT A PULL DOWN IS?   you must shoot with that setting.

  • Converting 1080/50p video for import into Premiere Elements

    Hi there,
I'm currently looking into buying an HD camcorder, and editing software to go with it.  I'm considering getting a camcorder which can record in 1080/50p for future-proofing, however I see that Premiere Elements doesn't currently support 1080/50p editing.  I was wondering whether I could sensibly shoot video in 1080/50p for archiving, but convert it down to either 1080/50i or 720/50p prior to importing into Premiere?  Is there a suitable intermediate input format which Premiere supports and which wouldn't result in a significant loss of quality due to the extra transcoding step?
Also, what is the recommended system requirement for 1080/50i and 720/50p editing?  I have a 2007 Macbook (2.2 GHz Core2 Duo, 4GB RAM), would that be sufficient?
    Thank you.

Thanks a lot for the very quick response Steve.
I suspect shooting 1080/50i is likely to be the way to go, I'll obviously have a play once I get the camera.  I just wanted to check whether it's feasible to shoot in 1080/50p, but convert to 720/50p prior to importing into Premiere Elements.  That way I can keep a copy of the 1080/50p clip to use in a few years time when the consumer editing software has caught up.
If I were to do that, what's the recommended file format to convert to prior to import?  Is there something similar to AIC (Apple Intermediate Codec) which is fast to convert to and edit from - ideally I'd rather not convert to 720/50p H.264.  Is there a list of Premiere Elements' supproted input formats somewhere?

  • No support for 24p camcorders? (de-interlacing, 3:2 pull-down)

I have the Canon HV20, which is not a new camcorder by any measure. It captures video in 24p (which is great for low-lighting conditions), but then writes it to tape in 60i. This is similar to how DVDs send cinematic video to your television.
Alas, I can't get iMovie to handling this video (and probably any interlaced video). I've tried exporting it to Quicktime (full 1080 resolution) at 24fps, and the output looks like crap due to incorrect de-interlacing or 3:2 recognition. Even if I open the original raw capture using quicktime and step through the "frames", quicktime shows 2 out of every 5 "frames" interlaced, since it incorrectly identifies the video as 29.97 fps.
Is there any way to use iMovie with interlaced video? With 24p recorded as 60i? Will Final Cut Express do any better? Thanks in advance.
Another possibility, can I export the video as 60i and let my TV or PS3 perform the 3:2 pull-down?

Are you familiar with 60i video? If the source video isn't de-interlaced, it's going to look bad even when exported uncompressed, assuming your exporting to some progressive scan format such as 30p or 24p.
2 out of every 5 frames (at 30fps) look like the ball on this webpage:
    http://www.labdv.com/leon-lab/video/interlace_en.htm
There is a form of deinterlacing available when exporting to QuickTime. This solves the problem if I wanted a QuickTime container, but the option isn't available when exporting to MPEG-4.

  • Trouble compressing 30p for 24p sequence

    Hi everybody. Here's my situation:
I'm editing a video shot with two Canon XH A1 cameras shooting in HDV 1080 24P and one Canon MK2 shooting in H.264 1080 30p.
The frame rate for the bulk of the footage -- i.e. from the HX A1 is 23.98.
I converted the MK2 footage using compressor to HDV 1080p24, with a frame rate of 24. Compressor doesn't give an option for 23.98 (or am I not seeing?). The converted footage looks good and requires no rendering in a 1080p24 Final Cut timeline. But when I use large chunks of it (more than a minute or so), it gradually goes out of sync (with audio from the other cameras). I was able to compensate for this in the edit, but when I exported the video from final cut, the video -- made up of both MK2 and XH A1 footage -- became gradually out of sync, so that by the end of the 77 minute movie, the video and picture were off by 81 frames.
Any suggestions on fixing this will be most appreciated. I assume it has to do with mixing footage with 23.98 and 24 frame rates.

While this doesn't directly address your sync problems, you can convert to 23.98 fps with Compressor.
The key step, in case you've yet to try it, is to manually input the frame rate (select Custom, then enter 23.98) in your target's Video settings (the QT-like window). (That drop-down box does not give you a selection for 23.98, and I'm guessing that's why you went 24 fps exactly, right?). After that, proceed as you were (with Frame Controls 'n whatnot).
That said, I'm not 100% confident this will fix your sync issues -- because sync issues can be caused by any number of things, including sequence/project corruption, in my experience -- but it's worth a shot.

  • Why does export with "current settings" compress 1440 x 1080 to 720 x 480?

I am trying to export some clips from fcp x to motion (wish you didn't have to do this, to begin with). Anyway, my clips are being exported in a lower quality )720 x 480)-- all of the choices in the "export" drop-down menu are 720 x 480, even though the clip is 1440 x 1080, imported to dfcp from hdv format.
Thanks for the help; this is driving me nuts.

Ah, well it says 1440 x 1080 in the project that I am editing, but since I wanted to only fix a short clip, I created a "to fix" project and put the files I want to fix in there to export. That project had defaulted to 720 x 480--there's the problem. Thanks, yet another.

  • Upscaling 720 to 1080 and downscaling 1080 to 720

    Hi all...
I'm editing a largely talking-heads documentary. We shot most of the interviews on a DSLR in 1080 24fps. I've been editing in a 720p ProResLT sequence, so that I can take advantage of the "extra" resolution by zooming in to 100% at times. (Also, the DSLR shots aren't the sharpest, so this way the softness is not as obvious.) I plan to master to 720p ProResLT.
The issue however, is that when creating a DCP for some theatrical screenings, this exported 720 master is going to be scaled back up to 1080.
So my question is, which is preferable with 1080 footage when I
    a) want to zoom in by 130% for closeups pretty often and
    b) when in some cases it will need to be delivered/projected at 1080:
    1) Edit in a 720 sequence so that the zoomed-in shots will not be scaled larger than 100%, export a 720p master, but then for the DCP scale that master back up to 1080. So in the DCP, shots that were originally 1080 at full quality, would now be 1080 up-rezed from 720 which was downrezed from the original 1080 footage.
    2) Edit in a 1080 sequence, the zoomed in closeup shots will be at 130% and thus not full quality, export the file for the DCP at 1080 from this sequence - and at least the non-zoomed-in shots would be at full quality, ie 100% and not larger. And then for the 720p Master (if there is a point in having one) I would either nest that 1080 sequence into a 720 timeline, or I would import the exported 1080 master file into a 720p timeline. But in the 720 export, the shots that I scaled up to 130% in the 1080 timeline will now have been scaled back down to 100%. I'm not sure if quality is lost going up and down like that, in either option 1 or 2.
Also, is there a difference in quality between screening a 720 film where the projector upscales the image vs upscaling the image before exporting and exporting a 1080 version?
    Thanks!

My two cents (worth exactly 2 cents)
Continue editing as you have to take advantage of the reframing ability. I would probably change the final output to ProRes 422, but that is your call.
When complete and you need to deliver a 1080 version, have the uprez done by hardware such as a Teranex:
    Blackmagic Design: Teranex Express
    MtD
