Panning law preferences?

I'm doing a film project where the majority of the audio was recorded with two microphones (one lav for each actor). It should've been recorded in dual-mono, but it was recorded in stereo instead, and I'm stuck with that. So each actor's mic is either panned left or right, and I have to pan them to center in the timeline, but because of panning law, this attenuates the signal by up to 6db, which is creating significant problems with the levels. Is there a setting in FCP to adjust and/or disable the attenuation when panning to center?

You should be able to recapture as Ch 1 + Ch 2 giving you two independent mono tracks. But barring recapturing, here's another method to get them all panned center:
Select (highlight) one of the clips in the Timeline then hit Option l (lowercase L). That will change it from a 'Stereo Pair' to two audio channels, one panned right and one panned left. While the clip is still selected, go to Modify->Audio->Pan Center (I forget the keyboard shortcut). Next, right click on one of the changed clip and select 'Copy'. Then select all remaining clips you want to change, right-click on one of them and select 'Paste Attributes'->Pan (in the Audio column).

  • Pan Law settings, once and for all..

Lots of talk lately about this but still unclear about someting...
I'd like to close the book on this topic, at least for me.
What setting in the Pan Law most closely resembles the panning/mixing/imaging capabilities found on a quality analog console?
Is all this 3db or -3db compensated stuff just something Logic has come up with to handle its self, or is this a universally necessary thing?
I just want what most accurately resembles the real thing. The real thing being proper panning/imaging that I've heard on great records of the past 20 years...
    THanks
    Noah

noah, originally analog mixers had no compensation.
everything was ok as long as the music was played back in stereo.
in mono, however the centre signal would increase by 3db and the sides would decrease by -3db. this is called "centre channel build up".
this is why the mono - stereo switch on mixers is important.
(i constantly check the mix between mono/stereo at mixdown.)
this compatibility is still important today. (am radio, fm radio, clock radios etc.)
the way around this is to artificially increase the sides (+3) and dip the middle (-3) of the mixers panpots.
in the daw world as in the analog one, this is for monitoring only.
it's an illusion. and a useful one.
it only effects wot goes to tape/HDD because the pan law is forcing you to compensate when you mix with it on. really, it just saves time checking the mix in mono.
to prove my point, download the demo of elemental audios excellent XL meter plugs.
one of these clearly shows the difference between mid and side signals.
ergo: more side = wider stereo. more mid = narrower image leading to mono.
note: you cannot naturally increase the side signal as this leads to antiphase components which will virtually make the music have no center at all. great for the occasional sfx. hendrix used antiphase on EL a lot to good effect for eg.
there is a lot of mumbo jumbo and misinfo re: this topic.
it is not voodoo, merely slight of hand.
since the early 70s i have always checked mixes in mono, pan-law or no.
footnote: if you think this is confusing, try collapsing a 5.1 mix back to stereo, then mono.........

  • To use the "Users & Groups" preferences pane, System Preferences must quit and reopen.

When I try to access some of the system preferences in Mavericks I get an error pane that states "To use the “Users & Groups” preferences pane, System Preferences must quit and reopen."
Has anybody had this problem and if so what is the fix?

Usually happens if you opened one that was 32-bit. Then, you need to revert back to 64-bit.

This is a shot in the dark, but try this:
log-in to your iCloud account with your Apple ID
    change your password
ensure your billing information is up-to-date
attempt to re-enable your Keychain (again)

  • +3.1 or above using pan law -3 compensated? Track pans elsewhere

    Hi,
I've just moved to an Intel Mac and am working on a previous G5 song. When I increase the level of any track beyond +3.1 the pan jumps to either hard left or right (at + 3.1 or above) and if I pan hard left or right the sound cuts out entirely. I have no plugs on any of the outputs. Most peculiar. This doesn't happen if pan law is set to anything other than -3 compensated. Any ideas why?

That'll be it, then. I suppose I'll just have to wait for Logic8, I hear it's due soon.
    A joke, I assume?
I'll assume that the * which shows up when I look to the region fade-in option is an Intel bug too.
No, it's been there since at least version 7.0, and happens on PPC machines as well. I have always speculated that the * shows up when more than one region is selected, as a reminder. That's not written anywhere, mind you, just my own observation.

  • (Another) Question Regarding Logic's Pan Law

Hello, everyone. Just as I thought my previous pan law thread absolutely exhausted every possible question that could be asked on Logic's PL, another one popped up, albiet this one seems much more easilly addressed (or so I hope):
When Logic's PL is set, and you bounce a track, will the resulting bounced file when listened to OUTSIDE of Logic (i.e. on its own) be heard WITH the pan law or without the pan law? In other words, if I bounce the track on a -3dB PL, where my center signal is -3dB lower than my left and right signal, will I then hear the bounced track when played outside of Logic with the -3dB lowered middle? or will I hear it with the center signal a little louder now?
The reason I ask this is because if the latter scenario is the case (i.e. Logic's PL gets ignored when the bounced track is listened to outside of Logic) - which, incidentally, might just be the case given that some tracks I bounced and then listened to seemed to be a little louder in the middle than I rememebered them being - then what on earth is the purpose of the pan law itself?? If the PL only exists and functions so long as you're in the vaccume of Logic, then that obviously won't work because it doesn't apply OUTSIDE of Logic, and, consequently, gives you inacurate mixes.
    Ugh . . .
Thank you everyone for your responses in advance . . .
And I promise this thread won't be as long as the last one.

    Hi,
So then to hear back how a -3dB PL bounce sounds in Logic, you have to listen to it with the PL readjusted to 0 dB, correct? otherwise Logic will add another PL to the track that was already bounced with the PL on it . . .
This statement is incorrect. If you playback a single Stereo file in Logic, and do nothing to it pan-wise, it will come out sounding exactly the same as the mutlitrack.
You need to really understand why Pan Law even came to be.
Back in the analogue hardware days of yore, there were some engineers that had issues with certain resistive pots which were chosen for panoramic control of a mono sound source on a stereo mixer.
They invented a system, for their particular board, whereby a "panoramic" pot would be fed by TWO versions of the same signal, instead of one signal. This cause the center to be about 3dB LOUDER than the hard left and right, because, when you add the same signal in a mixer twice, generally you get a total gain of 3dB.
So, they did some fancy pantsy calculations and figure out they could add RESISTORS to these two equal signals, and bring down that center by 3dB. The side effect became that when you panned hard left or roght, you were now getting 3dB LESS signal at those panoramic positions.
When DAW's came along, they orignally did not behave like their analogue mixer counterparts. they mostly were set to 0 pan law, meaning the center would be louder. After much complaining by the audio industry some companies changed this, some with options, like eMagic Logic, and some simply changed it period (ProTools).
So now you have the option to have your DAW behave more like an analogue desk, or not. the option is entirely up to you. although, if you want to mix music and have it sound like older, analogue recordings, you should choose -3dB.
    Cheers

  • Security pane in preferences is missing cookies, databases and non-secure forms options?  Also Privacy Pane is totally blank?

I wanted to delete some cookies.  But when I went to the Security Pane in Safari Preferences, it does not show any of the following categories/settings option:  nothing for cookes (nothing for accept or show or anything else about cookies), nothing for databases, and nothing for non-secure forms.  No controls for these are showing in the Security pane.  Also, the Privacy Pane in Safari preferenes is totally blank--I can't set anything on that.  Where are these controls/settings options, why can't I see them?  I am using OSX 10.6.8 and Safari Version 5.1.9, I have a Mac Book Pro 3.06 Intel. Thanks.

Uninstall SIMBL as follows. Back up all data before making any changes.
Triple-click the line below to select it, then copy the text to the Clipboard (command-C):
    /Library
    In the Finder, select
    Go ▹ Go to Folder...
from the menu bar, paste into the box that opens (command-V), and press return. A folder will open. From that folder, delete the items listed below (some may be absent.) You may be prompted for your administrator login password.
    Application Support/SIMBL
    InputManagers/SIMBL.bundle
    LaunchAgents/net.culater.SIMBL.Agent.plist
    ScriptingAdditions/SIMBL.osax
Log out and log back in.
Make sure you never reinstall SIMBL. It’s likely to come bundled with another third-party system modfication that depends on it. If you want trouble-free computing, avoid software that makes miraculous changes to other software, especially built-in applications. The only real exception to that rule is Safari extensions, which are mostly safe, and are easy to get rid of when they don’t work. SIMBL and its dependents are not Safari extensions.

  • "Look for libraries to share" does not appear in the Shared pane under preferences.  I'm trying to see my fiances shared library.  She can see mine. I have selected share entire library.  Help please!

Cannot see my fiance's library but she can see mine.  Checked all appropriate boxes to share entire library.  Help syays to check under Shared which does not even appear anywhere.  It also said to check the "Look for share libraries" under shared pane which also does not exit in that pane. I am Windows 7 and she is Macbook.  Thanks

I'm using an Airport Extreme, and I'm not aware of UPnP settings in the Airport Utility.
On the Mac, I set up a Parallels Vista instance in bridged mode and verified that I can see the other Vista PC share folders, so I know that the Vista PC has been set up correctly.
Additionally, as mentioned before, I switched DNS Servers several times, but settled on an alternative Rogers DNS to avoid their awful failed lookup ad page (64.71.255.202 if anyone needs it).
I also tried adding the Vista PC IP to my Mac hosts file, which oddly showed the Mac on the Vista side, but nothing on the Mac side.
I also goofed around in the smb.conf file with some settings, but alas, nada.
The only thing that might explain why the Airport Express network (Vista, XP) provided me with shares in the sidebar and not my own Airport Extreme network (just Vista) could be that it's a master browser issue. I saw a couple of posts about this.
If the Vista machine is the master browser, nothing will show in the sidebar, but if XP or a Mac is the master browser, then the sidebar will show shares. I don't have a way to verify this as I'm not sure how to force one machine to be a master browser over another. I'm suspicious if this will do anything as I've found other posts saying exactly the opposite scenario.
Is there anyone out there that has had a network, possibly with Airport Extreme, one Mac (Leopard), one Vista PC, and Vista share is showing in the Finder sidebar?

  • Deleted all accounts in the Sharing pane (sys preference)

Deleted all accounts in the Sharing (System preference) once I did that I was still logged but couldnt open apps...close apps...even log out. I had to do a hard reboot and now the computer will not boot up. I get to the black and white screen but it never proceeds from there. I inserted the Leopard DVD but it doesn't boot up. I have no idea what I've done or how to resolve this. HELP!
    Joe

You destroyed your machine's ability to boot up, since there are no user accounts. Shut down the machine with the install disk inserted, restart holding down the OPTION key, select the install disk icon, and click on the arrow underneath it. That should allow you to boot with the install disk. Whether or not you can do anything to fix the problem, I can't say. If you do an Archive & Install, there's no user data to save. If you do an Erase & Install, you have to wipe (erase) the hosed OS. Unless you have a bootable backup/clone of a good OS, you just might be out of luck.

  • Sonalksis Free G and Pan Law

this plug has a setting for -6db PL.
before i had logic, i used a custom analog console which was constantly toggled between mono/stereo when mixing. there was no paw law on this desk.
the difference in level was measured at +6db (nominal 86db spl at mix position) in the mono position.
the Free G's -6 PL setting provided a missing in my mixing procedure.
now, when switching from mono to stereo, i do not hear any difference between stereo and mono levels. this is not the case with -3db PL in this plug or logic's own.
so, i am re-adopting the -6db PL, now that i've found it again.

So are you inserting Free G on every channel? And, if so, as the last insert?

  • TS4001 To use the "iCloud" preferences pane, System Preferences must quit and reopen.

And I reopen SP and the same message comes up.....please help

    Just got same problem.
#1. There is no Box, under Label or anywher to uncheck or check.
#2. The device I want to use does not have an update driver. What I really need if for the Box to check or uncheck which should be there according to Apple Help.
#3. I tried this, resetting the whole computer's kernal extension by using a Terminal command (although I don't like doing that). It didn't work. sudo systemsetup -setkernelbootarchitecture i386
So I reset it to: sudo systemsetup -setkernelbootarchitecture x86_64
But emphasize, again, I don't like doing SUDO commands in Terminal.
    So...Anything else to try?
Thanks for any info that might help.

  • Users&groups preferences pane wants to open in 32-bit mode

Crazy isn't it? The users&groups preferences pane says: "To use the "Users & Groups" preferences pane, System Preferences must quit and reopen (like with 32-bit pps). when I click ok, it says: "Preferences Error, Could not load Users & Groups preferences pane."

I had to reinstall Lion, just running the installer again, not a clean install and the problem was gone. Just give it a try (hopefully) nothing to lose...

  • Some system preferences panes won't open

I just installed Mountain Lionon my iMac. When I try to open the System Preferences panes for Notifications; Security & Privacy; iCloud; Mail, Contacts & Calendars; and Desktop & Screen Saver though, I get the message
To use the “[Name of pane]” preferences pane, System Preferences must quit and reopen.
Selecting OK causes the System Preferences to disappear and then come back, but that same error message is still there. How do I get rid of it so I can acess those panes? Thanks!

    Yep:
    Go to Applications folder
    Select System Preferences
    Enter Command I
Under General, deslect Open in 32-bit mode
Then try to acess what you were trying to earlier.
    Good luck!

  • System Preference Pane Errors

    Good evening everyone,
I'm currently having some issues with my iMac in relation to the System Preference 'preference panes' and the Bluetooth connection to my machine.  A large number of preference panes are giving me two types of errors when trying to open them in System Preferences.  I've listed the two errors below, followed by the panes that aren't working based on the stated error:
Error Type 1 - "You can't open (preference pane name) preferences because it doesn't work on an Intel-based Mac.
         - Desktop & Screen Saver
         - Security & Privacy
Error Type 2 - "Could not load (preference pane name) preference pane.
         - Dock
         - Spotlight
         - Energy Saver
         - Keyboard
         - Mouse
         - Trackpad
         - Bluetooth
         - Sharing
         - Users & Groups
         - Parental Controls
         - Accessibility
All other preference panes seem to be working correctly.  I only noticed this issue because my Bluetooth mouse and trackpad stopped working and several suggestions mentioned looking at settings, which I can't do.  If someone could help me correct this/these issues it would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Eric

    Try this...
Safe Boot , (holding Shift key down at bootup), use Disk Utility from there to Repair Permissions, test if things work OK in Safe Mode.
Then move these files to the Desktop for now...
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.finder.plist
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.systempreferences.plist
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.desktop.plist
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.recentitems.plist
    Reboot & test.
PS. Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive.
