Panning / left and right switched

Hi all,
I know it seems rather silly, but my left and right seem to be switched and I don't know how to solve it. I use a Presonus Firestudio Mobile, that is FireWire connected, I connect my headphones to the card's hp-output, so there's no cables to switch...
Anyone got a suggestion other than "Get used to it"?
thnx,
eltho

Hi,
get used to using the Gain Plugin. There you can swap L/R if you have to. But there's also the possibility that your headphones are wrong cabled. You should cross-check this.

  • In Final Cut Pro X 10.1.1 I'm trying to separate left and right stereo tracks to delete left and pan right to centre. I cannot find a way to do this.

I record in stereo with a 10KHz tone down the left channel to defeat AGC on my camera and mic feed into the right channel. When I edit, I want to mute/delete the left channel and pan the right into the centre, to leave me with mono audio across both left and right. I could do this easily in FCP 6 but can find no way to do it in FCP X. I'm using the same source files. When I choose Dual Mono mode in the Audio Inspector, it mixes left and right and pushes the combined signal into both channels, giving me a mix of 10KHZ tone and audio in both left and right. Stereo mode shows me the two channels correctly with one driven hard (the tone) and the other at good voice levels. I just want to kill the left channel and pan the right to centre.
I'm converting original TOD files using MPEG Streamclip before import and definitely keeping audio as stereo.
This is driving me nuts! It should be simple and is in FCP 6. Any help greatly appreciated.

    Mono Setting

Mb - If you're using FCPX 10.1.1 and Mavericks, make certain you've downloaded the most current Sony XDCAM FCPX plugin from sonycreativesortware.com unless you're using an older version of FCPX and then you'd need the previous XDCAM plugin.
You shouldn't see 8 mono tracks.  There are import settings in /fCPX that you can check and I don't ask FCPX to analyze my media or seperate mono or combine stereo, etc.  I like to have everything come in as it is, especially because I know what I've done with every channel, etc.
What I wrote to Ian is what I'd tell you - so please take a look at how you can make a "stereo" track that is actually two mono tracks, mono.  Once you do that you can address each mono channel by itself since it needs different volume, compression, and EQ than other channels.
There are ethernet, USB, and firewire controllers that work in FCPX, but that's not the typical workflow because generally if you're getting into any amount of post audio sweetening beyond basic "staples" audio treatment, you would instead use "Roles" to export your audio to Logic or Pro Tools and do you work in those applications and then cut the final product back into your FCPX project.  In Logic or Pro Tools is where you might use a controller.
In terms of automating levels, I'm not positive I know what you mean.  Compressor is a nice internal Logic plugin that kind of automates levels in a way but its about compressing peaks at a threshold that you set and at a ratio of compression.  So I may not understand what other automation is available unless you've exported you tracks to Logic or Pro Tools.

  • I'm using GarageBand 10.0.1. Do the built-in drum tracks only come in mono format, or is it possible to make them true stereo (i.e. Left and Right channels outputing different signals, to sound like the kit has been panned across the stereo field)?

I'm using GarageBand 10.0.1. Do the built-in drum tracks only come in mono format, or is it possible to make them true stereo (i.e. Left and Right channels putting out different signals, to sound like the kit has been panned across the stereo field)?

All the Drum Kits available for GarageBand are mixed in stereo.
Logic provides the same 18 Drum Kits also as "Producer Kits", which are multi-track outputs,. Each Drum Kit Piece (Kick, Snare, HH, etc) and also room mice and overheads are routed to individual channel strips.
Here is a screenshot of one Drum Kit in Logic Pro X with individual Channels Strips. Each Channel Strip can be loaded with individual effects (compressor) and adduced with individual sends, etc.
What that means is that all the Drummers are professionally recorded and sampled with individual mics. The Stereo Drums Kits are just "stereo mix-downs" for easier handling and less CPU demand. I explain all the details about the Drummer ecosystem in my graphically enhanced manual "GarageBand X - How it Works"
    Hope that helps

  • Left and right channel panning for drummer backing tracks in Garageband - HELP

    Hi there
OK, so I've finished my song on garageband that I've recorded with a USB keyboard with many STEREO keyboard parts and a click track.
I need to be able to mix down to the following specification for my drummer.
Left Channel - Mono keyboard sounds (to goto PA)
Right Channel - Same Mono keyboard sounds plus click track (to be heard through headphones)
So basically the keyboard will be the same mono track at the same volume playing through both the left and right. I cant simply put the stereo keyboard sound in the centre as that would mean the drummer would get SOME parts of the keyboards stereo fields and the PA would get the other parts of the stereo field so it wouldnt sound right.
Any ideas how to do this?
I hope I've explained myself OK

I need to be able to mix down to the following specification for my drummer.
Left Channel - Mono keyboard sounds (to goto PA)
Right Channel - Same Mono keyboard sounds plus click track (to be heard through headphones)
Here are instructions on how to split a stereo track into mono tracks:
    http://www.bulletsandbones.com/GB/FAQPages/StereoToMono.html
On top of this, you will want to re-import the mono keyboard track back into Garageband, duplicate it onto a 2nd mono track,  then add the click track (on a separate 3rd mono track of course).  Then pan one mono keyboard track hard left, and pan the other mono keyboard track hard right and the click track hard right as well.  Export as normal and everything should be good.

  • Switching Left and Right stereo tracks

I have a stereo audio recording that needs the left channel switch to the right and right switch to the left. Is there an easy way to do this?

I think I found the solution by using the "Direction Mixer" plugin.

  • Can i switch left and right outp

ok, i found 4 old speakers in my basement, and decided to make my closet into a computer room with extreme surround sound. I got my stereo system as well, and made myself a nice little 4.0 setup. (i only found one stereo in my basement, so the front channel has 4 speakers, and the back has the other 2). I bought a sound blaster audigy, and it sounded great.
However, i then noticed my two old desktop speakers, and they still worked great. So, i decided to make a 6.0 setup. However, my closet is really long, and there was no place in the back for a speaker. So, to make a long troubleshoot short, i soldered the lefft speaker wire to an extremely long audio cord and taped the speaker (using monstrous amounts of duct tape) to the wall above the doorframe.
I got it all hooked up, with those 2 new speakers being front center and rear center. I booted up and... ****** BACKWARDS!!!!! The rear center is in the front center spot and vice versa. I was wondering if there was any way to tweak the settings so that you could switch the speaker assignments. Basically, i need to switch the left and right output on only one of three output channels. (im usin the fourth for a mike)
Please tell me anything you know, even if its probably not true or if its risky, i cant switch the speakers because i cant solder the 2-channel output cord to make it longer, and it would kill the wal to rip off all that tape. Thanx.

Try Audio MIDI Setup (Utilities folder. Set "Properties For" to Line Output and click "Configure Speakers".
If that doesn't work, try using Audio Hijack Pro
    <http://www.rogueamoeba.com/audiohijackpro/>
It has a "Swap Channels" effect. It is not free, but the free trial should work fine if you are not recording.

  • The three finger swipe left and right does not seem to work

    Hi
I have been trying to do the left and right three finger swipe that allows you to move between applications to no avail.  It just keeps switching between dashboard and one app even if I have 5 apps open at the same time. Snow Leopard has this feature where all the apps opened are shown when you do the swipe and you can choose the one you want.  I think this is better but it doesn't work.
    Any help will be appreciated.
    Antonio

Such spaces actually use very little extra memory relative to the apps you have open to occupy those spaces. I would go out on a limb and say it doesn't matter whether you have one space for every application or all on the same desktop.
The limitation will come from the applications and the data you are crunching on them.
(But that's just a personal view, haven't run into any limits on my ow 4GB Macbook Pro so far)

  • Why after i update my left and right arrow keys stop working

my left and right arrow keys stoped working after i updated to Mavericks now the dont work

    Hello ccombs2014,
It sounds like 2 of your keys are not working after updating to Mavericks. I found this section of an article for you to help troubleshoot this issue named:
One or more keys on the keyboard do not respond
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ts1381
Some keys don't work as expected
From the Apple menu, choose System Preferences.
From the View menu, choose Speech.
Click the Text to Speech tab.
If "Speak selected text when the key is pressed" is enabled, the key or key combination set to speak text cannot be used for other purposes or used to type text--click Set Key and change it to a less-commonly used key combination (try to use modifier keys such as Shift, Command, Option, and Control). Or, disable the "Speak selected text when the key is pressed" option.
Click the Universal Access pane in System Preferences, click the Keyboard tab.
Make sure that Slow Keys is turned off. With Slow Keys on, you need to press a key for a longer period of time for it to be recognized.
In the Universal Access pane, click the Mouse tab, and make sure Mouse Keys is turned off. With Mouse Keys enabled, you cannot use the Numeric Keypad to enter numbers--instead the keypad moves the pointer (cursor). (There is an option to enable Mouse Keys with five presses of the Option key; you may want to turn that option off to avoid accidentally enabling it.) If Mouse Keys is enabled and you are using a keyboard with no numeric keypad or Num Lock function, see Unable to type while Mouse Keys is enabled in Mac OS X.
If the function keys on the top row of the keyboard are not working as expected, see Mac OS X: How to change the behavior of function keys.
If the issue persists, use Keyboard Viewer to help isolate the issue:
Click the Language & Text pane (Mac OS X v10.6) or International pane (Mac OS X v10.5.8 or earlier) in System Preferences.
Click the Input Sources tab (or Input Menu tab in Mac OS X 10.5.8 or earlier).
Click the Keyboard & Character Viewer "On" checkbox to select it (click the Keyboard Viewer "On" checkbox in Mac OS X 10.5.8 or earlier).
From the Input (flag) menu, choose Show Keyboard Viewer.
If the keyboard is connected and detected by Mac OS X, the keys you type will highlight in the Keyboard Viewer window. Open TextEdit (or any text application), and try to type something using the keys that were previously not responding to see if they highlight in Keyboard Viewer.
Start from the Mac OS X Install Disc, choose Terminal from the Utilities menu and test the keys which were previously not working.  If the keys work while started from the Install disc, then the keyboard itself is working correctly.  Use Mac OS X: How to troubleshoot a software issue to isolate the software issue that may be causing the keys to not respond.
Thank you for using Apple Support Communities.
    All the best,
    Sterling

  • HT1338 My new magic mouse will not one finger scroll left and right

I am up to date with software but after connecting my new magic mouse it will not one finger scroll left and right. It does scroll up and down. Any ideas on what may be wrong??

I don't have a Magic Mouse, but there is probably a setting that enables and disables horizontal scrolling.  Look on System Preferences Mouse pane.

  • How to make track work in both left and right speaker?

i have an audio track with 2 speakers that each had a lav mic on them.  one was recorded into left channel and the other the right channel.  so of course when i play back each of their voices only come out of one speaker.  pretty new to audition so how do i fix the track so that they each come out of both speakers?  TIA

I have to say that, although not uncommon, for TV it depends quite a lot on how things are shot.  In a standard interview situation where you might have a 2-shot to establish (with a definite left and right position) then a close up of the interviewee then a cutaway of the reporter and so on, panning can become very confusing and it tends to be better to just put everything in the centre.
Radio is easier because you don't have to be aware of what pictures are showing--but, even there care needs to be taken especially since, as Steve says, a lot of listening is on ear buds or headphones which accentuate any panning.  Even in radio, though, choices have to be careful...for example, let's say the host starts with an interview where he's panned slightly right and the guest slightly left.  So far, so good.  However, then the next two stories are just studio reads...does the host stay panned slightly right for consistency or does he move to the centre possibly causing confusion?
I'm not saying never give positioning clues in a radio or TV mix, just that you always have to be aware of the bigger picture.

  • Surround- left and right gone...please help

When I switch my tracks over to surround... L and R (1+2) are gone! i can sweep the dot around the surround and hear all the channels except for left and right...
but in stereo mode they work fine...
    help!

Thank you. Before I tried to go this route, I restarted the computer. That took care of the back and forward problems, but the bookmarks were still missing. I went into Time Machine and restored the application settings folder from 2 days ago. Now everything seems to work fine. If it decides to be a problem in the next couple of days, I will go this route.
    Thanks again for your response.

  • I would like to transfer old reel-to-reel tapes to an iMac. There are different recordings on the left and right channel of the tapes. When I connect the tape deck to the Mac, I get one recording on the left, the other on the right speaker. What to do?

I was about to transfer some music from a reel-to-reel machione to my Mac. There are different sound recordings on the left and right channels. When I connect with RCA cables and Y-connector, I hear one recording from the left speaker, another from the right side. How do I record only one side, but hear it from both speakers?
    Detlef

You don't say what end, or connectors are plugged into what. I'm assuming the RCA connectors are on the reel-to-reel end. Since the tape has two different mono recordings, one on each track, you of course only want one at a time during playback. Otherwise, the Mac (or any recording setup) can only treat it as a stereo recording with the standard Left-Right tracks.
    1)  There are multiple ways to connect different types of cables to get a mono signal down to a stereo output at the Mac. Here's one way.
    2) Plug any RCA cable (single cable or stereo) into only the right or left RCA output of the reel-to-reel.
    3) On the other end of the RCA cable, plug in an adapter like this. That will feed the single RCA output into a mono 1/8" plug.
    4) Then plug that adapter into this. That turns the 1/8" mono signal into a "stereo" output with the same single track audio being fed to the Mac on both the left and right channels.
    5) Record either the left or right output of the reel-to-reel. Rewind the tape and switch the RCA connector on the reel-to-reel to the right channel (if you started with the left) and record that mono signal as stereo.
Or, avoid all of this hardware mumbo-jumbo in the first place and do this:
    1) Record the audio just the way you have it. Two different recordings, one on each channel.
    2) Copy the audio recording to a new name and open it in your editor.
    3) Highlight the left track and copy/paste it into the right track. Presto! Mono recording of the left track on both channels. Save the recording.
    4) Repeat, only copy/pasting the right track into the left track and save the second recording.

  • I get noise when I combine left and right from the headphone output.

I need to combine the left and right channels of a Macbook Pro at the output connector.  When I build the cable to do this, there is significant static noise introduced.  If I break the short between left and right, the noise goes away.
(I'm doing this to put both channels of audio into a single side of a set of headphones, and I really don't want to buy a mixer.)

    Eddie,
I just ran a test on my G5 Logic system (Logic 9.02) with an internal RME PCI 8in/8out Audio Card and I get perfect separation bouncing to a stereo audio file using standard panning. Click on one side and a couple of crunchy guitars on the other. Each side is completely separate.
So, it seems to point to your hardware unless you have some other audio routing that we've missed.
I'm re-doing my setup so I may try a couple of other tests as I go along.

  • Routing left channel to left and right

I have a split-track audio file I have brought into Logic Pro 8, with instrumental accompaniment in the left channel, and voices in the right. I would like to have the left channel appear in both the left and right channels in the final mixdown. Is there a simple way to accomplish this in Logic?
    Thanks!
    Brian

If you click and hold onto the interleaved symbol at the bottom of the channelstrip a small menue opens giving you the option to set the stereo channel to "mono" - "left" - "right" and "surround". So set it to "left" for the channel carrying the playback and then just use the pan pot to pan the channel where you want it to be in your final mix (center by default).

  • Why Left and Right Joins if only one of them can serve the same purpose?

I understand that left join is used to display all the records from left table whereas the right join is used to display all the records from right table in a join.
However, if we switch the positions of the join tables and perform left join we can get all the records of the left table.
A left join B -> will give all records from A
A right join B ->will give all records from B
B left join A -> will again give all records from B.
The order in which the data is displayed(ie the field order) can also be maintained in the SELECT clause.
So, Why do we have left and right joins separately in existance, when only one of them can serve the same purpose?

    Hi,
I think it's because it is sometime more natural to outer join on left or right.
In your data model (or the query you are writing), there is some kind of hierarchy between tables : I feel more natural to have the table with lowest hierarchical level (the root table) on the left. So I sometimes prefer to right outer join...
This is a very personal feeling, I must admit.
To me what is strange is to have chosen left and right as they refer to a "latin" reading direction => forward join and backward join would be more meaningful for people that read from right to left.
+And I prefer the new joining syntax that doesn't us the {noformat}(+){noformat} sign...+
