Panning (& mixing) using Logic's Direction Mixer

I'm looking into panning (and even mixing in general) using an insert of Logic's Direction Mixer on every channel.
This follows my discovery that it was not otherwise possible to Send tracks to Busses, then set different panning positions for each of the Return signals.
(Eg, send multiple tracks to a common reverb, but pan the returns to the same position as the sends).
It's a bit confusing though. Suddenly, I'm faced with 180 increments to pan with, instead of the usual 127. (From -90 hard left, to +90 hard right).
Is there any disadvantage to panning using the Direction Mixer? - Does it not obey panning laws? Is there anything else I should know about it?
All help is appreciated.

The direction mixer does not obey pan laws. I believe from other posts that you can get around this by using FreeG by Solanskis.
The problem with the sends in Logic is that they are pre pan, even if you set them to post fader. The way to get around this is to route the out of you channel to a stereo aux, and then to use the sends from that. Not neat, and I would really like a fix for this.
As a side note, I heard somewhere that with TDM the sends are post pan, or at least selectable like this. I might well be wrong, and I use Logic native, but it's an interesting aside I think...

Who do you think I am? Santa Claus?
What you need is not a mixer, but an audio interface with at least 4 mic inputs. There is a lot of choice there, but you should indicate a budget. You can go from, say, € 300 to € thousands, if you want.
    Roland UA 1010
    Focusrite Scarlett 18i8
However, there are other options (like multi-out mixer plus multi in interface, or standalone mic preamps plus interface with 4 inputs, etc). I have little experience using these however so I really cannot say much about which one(s) to get. The two mentioned above both have four mic preamps, but they are by no means the only way to do it.
The cheapest solution I can think of is to get a second 1204USB, plug it in, and in OS X create an Aggregate device (=the two are being merged into 'one virtual' interface with two discrete stereo (= four discrete mono) inputs. Disadvantage: you keep the same (limited) soundquality of the 16 bits convertors. Getting any of the interfaces mentioned earlier will also mean you'll make the significant step up from 16 to 24 bits sound.

  • Help - home set up on Imac using logic 8 using Alesis multimix 8 usb mixer

    Hi all
Can anyone give advice as to how to i can use my multimix with logic pro on my imac. What im trying to do is get logic to use the inputs from the mixer and then use both the internal speakers as well as sending the signal back to the mixer so as i can use the phones to monitor everything.
Can anyone help please as im tearing my hair out now
PS - i am using logic 8 studio
    Thanks all

My system is different, but I'm doing basically the same thing you want to do, with one minor difference.
I have a Yamaha 01V96 with three internal ADAT I/O banks feeding a Presonus Firestudio Lightpipe.
The 01V96 does all of my input/output a/d-d/a conversions. The system looks like this:
01V96-->Presonus Lightpipe-->(Firewire out) into the Mac Pro.
All of my audio goes through the 01V96. The Mac's internal audio is not used. The 01V96 outputs feed a pair of Alesis Prolinear 720DSP speakers.
I think you will either have to attach your speakers to the mixers outputs and not use the internal audio, or you'll have to go into your audio/midi setup and switch from one to the other as the need arrises. I don't think you'll be able to have both of them active at the same time.

  • Trying to use Logic Studio to master a mixed CD (Trance music)

So I've mixed plenty of CD's before, but I just want this to sound good on ALL players (car speakers, headphones, etc) I've used Ableton Live to mix and blend the songs together. The last CD I made I believe I used Waveburner to make the CD. I used the mastering option in there, but it made all the music "weak" and muddy....My buddy recommended that I just bring the tracks into Logic and use the "mastering template" in there. So I started a new project with the "Stereo Mastering" template...... I've messed around with the "Chan EQ" and "gain" plug ins and such.... But nothing seems to make this sounds BETTER and punchier.
So my question is, how do I go about using these plug ins to make the music all come alive and all EVEN for easy listening? I've searched in the manual and online, but nothing really giving pointers on how to master a mixed CD..... Oh, and by the way, the music for the CD is Trance (dance). Thanks!

I arrange and master techno/electro mixes in Ableton. You don't need to use Logic.
In Ableton, get your levels spot on for each track so that you are hitting 0db in the right places - Pay close attention to the meters and listen closely for any clipping/distortion. Occasionally you'll have a quieter track which might be hitting 0db but sounds quieter than the tracks either side, in this case use a spectrum analyser and an EQ to boost the quieter frequencies a bit, if that isnt doing it use a compressor on that track to get it upto the same volume as the rest without clipping. A transparent limiter set to 0db on the master helps fix any clips you've missed.
If you don't have the Ableton Project and only have the option of Logic to 'master' it, then i suggest putting a limiter on the master out. Set the Output Level to 0db and be subtle with the gain. Listen to the loudest parts of the track and make sure it still sounds ok before bouncing it. If this still is not adding enough punch, then put a compressor on the output channel before the limiter and play with the settings to get the punch you are after. Remember though that while compressing and limiting will make it louder, you're losing quality and definition, so be sparing.
Perhaps don't use the mastering option in the Waveburner software, i find iTunes works fine for burning a .wav i've made in Ableton. Also, i don't bother with Ableton's 'Normalise' option when bouncing the mix, if you've got the levels right you shouldn't need any other help.

  • Does anyone know how to record directly to a track using Logic's effects?

Hi there, does anyone know how to record directly to a track using Logic's effects? I know that it needs to run through a buss somehow but I am not quite sure how. Need to Di a bass and want to keep the levels down using a compressor (recording strait into a Mbox with Logic 8). Any help will be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

If you route your Bass into a channel in Logic and put plugins/fx on the channel plus you have monitoring on (and monitoring off on your external mixer) - you can record while listening to the effected sound. However what is being recorded is the clean/raw audio - this is a good thing as you can later change your compression/fx settings - printing the effect at this early stage is normally avoided.

  • Using Logic Pro with Reason 3.0

I am trying to use logic Pro with reason 3.0. I want to be able to sync them together to use redrum within reason as my drum machine. I am using a MOTU 828 mk II audio interface with 8 in's and 8 out's.
When I start logic first and the reason I am not hearing any sound from reason. I can see the meters move in the mixer of reason but I hear nothing.
From the standard documentation that comes with Logic all I can figure out is that rewire is there to sync any other rewire program so that can run side by side of one sequences transport controls.
I want to be able to hear audio from both my arrangement in Logic and in Reason at the same time in the same song in sync.
Can someone please tell me firstly if this is possible and if so how can I implement this kind of setup.
    Thanks in Advance.

Common problem. LP doesn't rewire 'out of the box'.
There are two ways to do this (well, more, but I'll tell you 2)
    1 (Easy Way):
Restart Mac (Just to be sure things are sorted, not everytime)
    Launch Logic
    Launch Reason
    Arrange Window
    Choose a Channel> Pan Left
Go to the Middle section of the Parameters on the Left
With the Channel pop up menu, select Rewire> RWMix L
Repeat for the Right and away you go.
    2 (More Advanced)
    Environment Window
In the Middle section of the parameters on the Left select Create
    Name it Rewire
Under that windows "New" pull down (Top Left), pull down to Audio Object
In the "Channel" pop up (Left, bottom section) select>Rewire (Left, right, 3,4... What ever you want.
Double Click the Audio Object to expand it
Pan Left or right, or whatever you need.
    Rename if you wish
Do the same for the other stereo sideNow's the fun part. Assign these stereo pairs to a bus (above the fader, the default is "Out 1-2")
    Go to the Mixer window
Double click the Bus you assigned, this puts it in the arrange window
    Arrange window
Name the Bus "Rewire" or "ReDrum" or something great like that.
Now you can use it like a stereo pair (which I wish Logic had) for automation and effects and such.

sorry, I'd like to butt in here:
I would like to do the same thing, so I am curious about this forum and rather than starting a new one, can I get some advice on this possibility:
    Mac Mini
    1.83GHz Intel Core Duo
    2GB 667 DDR2 SDRAM - 2x1GB
    80GB Serial ATA drive
    Glyph External HD 250 Gig
    Mackie Onyx 1620 w/Firewire
    Logic Pro 7.2
    thoughts?
The most number of tracks I could see at once would be 16.
Here is something I am most curious about...
    Firewire Hard drive
    Firewire Interface/mixer
    Firewire camera for FCP
    to much firewire?
Please let me know if you have other thoughts aswell...

Completely inappropriate, and they all also not help with volume adjustments. Fades will only apply to Audio Regions in the Tracks area: they will not fade out the complete mix unless you first Bounce it, add that to the Tracks area, apply the Fades with the Fade tool, then Bounce in Place (Again).
Much much better to make use of Track automation to take care of Volume adjustments, and to Fade out the end of the song by applying Track Automation to the Output Channel

  • Want to use Logic 8 Pro for Podcasting, help needed

I have a few problems. I just switched over to Logic after using ProTools for 4 years so I'm a newbie. I'm about to start a podcast soon and I want to use Logic 8 Pro to do so. Is there a book that someone can recommend me for getting familiar with Logic?
Here are the things I need to get done:
I have a mixer and I need to know how to record the sounds playing through my computer to end up in Logic. I basically want to be able to capture the audio playing on my computer and have that be on the podcast. How do I do this?
Secondly, I'm confused about what Input 1 and Input 2 are. What is the difference?
I'd appreciate anyone who could IM me to help me further with Logic if I have a quick question or anything. My AIM screen name is DirtyVibes. Any help would be appreciated.
    Thank you,

Yes, the Getting Started manual, you can download it from Apple.

computer to end up in Logic. I basically want to be able to capture the audio
playing on my computer and have that be on the podcast. How do I do this?
I'm not sure what you are asking here. If you want to record the whole output of your computer, I recommend using a virtual audio driver like Soundflower or Jack.
Secondly, I'm confused about what Input 1 and Input 2 are. What is the difference?
Input 1 is the input marked "1" on your audio interface (or the left channel on a stereo pair).
Input 2 is the input marked "2".
If your audio interface has more than 2 inputs, they will all show up, so you can record different inputs to different tracks if required.
You might be better off using Garageband to record your podcasts, it's simpler and has dedicated podcast functions (like adding iTunes artwork and so on).

HI YES I'VE BEEN USING LOGIC FOR A LONG TIME TOO AND LOGIC IS NOT A CD BURNING PROGRAM, IT IS A MAKING MUSIC PROGRAM. YOU WILL NEED TO USE SOMETHING LIKE ITUNES OR TOAST TO BURN YOUR AIF MIX FILE TO AN AUDIO CD.

This is for any of you out there that use both Logic and Protools in your workflow. What are the reason(s) that you might do this? How do (if they do) these programs augment one another in the process of creating music? From initial idea to final mix, where do these programs plug in and why?
    Thanks in advance

I hear that there is no automatic Plug-In Delay Compensation in Pro Tools. You need to set a value manually. According to a training video I saw of Pro Tools, this appears to be true. I also hear that PDC still isn't implemented in the version 8.0 release, though I can't confirm that.
For a guy that's been using Logic for years, I may just be spoiled as far a PDC is concerned, but it seems like for all those missing features in Logic (such as Elastic Time), there are important things we take for granted that aren't available on the PT side. Add the 32-channel (16 stereo!) limit in LE that we rarely think about in Logic.
That said, PDC and channel limits aside, version 8 of PT seems like a pretty compelling upgrade from 7.x. I hope Apple is keeping an eye on things. If there's ever a serious competition between platforms as far as features go, it starts now.
    -droo
    You're right.
but the one thing I do like about not having the computer calculate the delay, is that when I am doing my final mixing, I can calculate it myself. this might be a little geeky for some, but in the end it allows me to control this aspect of the DAW that I cannot do in other DAWs.
I have noticed sometimes in Logic that some things do not get played back at the same absolute timepoint. In other words, i suspect the PDC might be changing upon each playback. This is fine for most music, but when doing either electronica or Jazz (believe it or not) this is not good.
This has only happened to me once or twice, but is something to note. In PT HD, the delay remains constant, so dealing with it is a one time deal. Set your delays, and you're done.
    Cheers

  • USING LOGIC'S PLUG INS WITH PROTOOLS

Does anything know if it's possible to use Logic Pro's plugins in Protools LE?
I like mixing in Protools but hate the plugins.. Logic's are so much better.

Why do you want to mix in Pro Tools if you have Logic Pro 7? I just want to know why would you do that?

  • Can I use logical databases in a WebDynpro ABAP program?

can I use logical databases in a WebDynpro ABAP program?
I need to build a WDA screen that is similar to the SAPDBPNP selection screen (user can find the personnel number based on several criteria, such as last_name/first_name of the employee).  So it seems that the existing logical databases have already many nice features already built (like the selection screens, the logic behind the screens etc). So I was wondering if/how I can use them in my WDA application.

    Hello, Tiberiu.
You cannot use LDB directly within your WDA programa. BUT, you can fetch results from this LDB by using FM LDB_PROCESS. This function module can be called anytime from any kind of ABAP program. But you will still have to create the screen, as it only processes data, not screens.

  • Problem in Iterating using logic:iterate tag

    Hi ,
I am using <logic:iterate> tag to iterate through a list of contents.
When the List size is 1222, all the Contents in the List are displaying properly.
When the size execdes 1223, the JSP is not displaying properly.
I am not getting any exception also.
I have added try and catch. Still it is not showing any exception.
When the size is more than 1300, Some contents are not displaying in JSP.
Can any one provide some inputs, so that I can crack my issue.
    The JSP code :
              <logic:iterate id="someXXXX" property="someXXX" name="someXXX" indexId="count" scope="request">
              <tr>
    <td><html:text name="someXXXX" property="someXXXX"

    <td height="15" align="center"><html:checkbox property="someXXXX" name="someXXXX" indexed="true" onclick="setCheckboxFlag(this)" />
                   <td width="4"> </td>

              <html:hidden property="someXXXX" name="someXXXX" indexed="true" />
              </logic:iterate>

get the records and store them in a collection. Store the collection in session. take the first 10 records as a subset and pass it to the iterate tag. use the hidden field to keep the last record number in the jsp. So when you first see the jsp the first 10 records will be shown and when user clicks for next records send the hidden field value to the server and take next 10 records as subset and pass it to iterate tag. This is how you can do this. but if you have thousands of records storing them in the session is not recommended. you can pull them directly from the database.

  • RSCRM_BAPI - using logical path

    Hi everybody,
I use rscrm_bapi in order to export data from bw.
Is it possible to use logical path name in this interface?
I try to write in the path field a logical path name which was define earlier (tran file),
but the system concatenate the logical path name with the file name.
    For example:
    File name: HANA
    Path name: HADAR
    result in al11: /defualt directory/HADARHANA
What is the right way to do it?
    Hadar

RSCRM_BAPI - directly dumps a query as a .CSV in the app server - for an APD to work - you cannot specify the filename but then by specifyinf a logical file name - it can be run multiple times without any changes...
