Panther 10.3.9 to Tiger 10.4.7 bought from ebay

I just took delivery of two 'grey' Apple DVD Tiger 10.4.7 disks (disk 1 and disk 2) bought from a London dealer on Ebay to upgrade our emac 1 GHz PowerPC G4, 512 MB SDRAM. In the 'about this mac' under Hardware ATA it says: Pioneer DVD - RW DVR - 106D.
When install disk 1 is inserted it displays the 'install disk' folder containing the black round 'Install Mac OS X and bundled software' icon along with other language and 'read me' PDFs.
Double clicking on the actual installer brings up a a page worth of what looks like DOS codes on top of another more familiar Mac dialogue box in the background which can't be read really. And there it hangs. We have to eject the disk by holding down the mouse whilst restarting the emac.
On the sellers ad it said this version of Tiger was for DVD emac amongst loads of other models.
Don't understand what I have got really. But not a straightforward upgrade and probably not going to work either by the look of it. No instruction paperwork came with the purchase which I did expect it to. Can't get hold of the seller - even though they had hundreds of positive feedbacks.
Any ideas? Many thanks
JFW

Hi Ian
Thanks for your response. That was the very first item I have bought on Ebay and I was jittery about it too. And look what's happened! My worst fears confirmed.
Apparently Tiger upgrade disks are hard to come by - that will explain the very high prices on Ebay for them. These disks didn't cost the earth, but I don't like to get 'done' if you know what I mean. I just want what was advertised (it said emac DVD 2005 suitable amongst other models). I have contacted Ebay resolutions as the seller (a dealer in South East London) can't be got hold of any which way I have tried. They say they give refunds - but that is to be found out! Either way I have lost the recorded postage.
Anyway, thanks again....... Jacqueline

  • Upgrading from Panther 10.3.9 to Tiger 10.4.3

My brother has a 17" 1.8 IMac and wants to upgrade from Panther 10.3.9 to Tiger 10.4.3 so he can use Aperture, Apple's new software. Since I have always helped him in the past with his upadates, I prefer doing clean installs by reformatting the hard drive before doing a major upgrade like the aforementioned. Is this the preferred method or should I attempt to install over Panther without reformatting? I'm rather reluctant to go to 10.4.3 based upon the number of negative experiences reported by people who have done so, but if he wants to use Aperture, according to the system requirements needed to run it, he has to perform this update. What recommendations do any of you have for making a safe migration from 10.3.9 to 10.4.3? In other words, what is the best and safest method of updating?
    G5 2.3   Mac OS X (10.4.1)

    Tom,
Don't forget this forum is the hospital ward. Don't let the preponderance of bad reports make you think an update is bad. These are usually cases where people haven't taken the proper precautions while updating which should always be taken.
Mac OS X doesn't technically have a clean install option. For reasons why I say not, see this user tip:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=607614
The best method of upgrading depends on how well the machine is functioning in 10.3.9. If it has sufficient space, sufficient RAM, has not had any kernel panics, the following sequence of steps is recommended:
    1. Backup your data.
    2. Make sure all your hardware and software has compatible drivers for the operating system you are going to. Verify all the applications you are going to use are updated.
    3. Dismount and disconnect all third party peripherals.
    4. Upgrade and install to 10.4 with a retail 10.4 installer disk. Do not use a system specific disk on a different machine. Buy the box family or single user pack from an Apple software reseller.
    5. Repair permissions with Applications -> Utilities -> Disk Utility
    6. Run the 10.4.3 combo update:
    http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/macosxupdate1043combo.html
    7. repeat step 5.
Do steps 1 and 5 before and after any update as a general practice in anycase. Application installers often have a tendency to want to mess with permissions and sometimes don't put them back causing problems later on.
Now if you are having issues launching specific programs, or programs unexpectedly quitting now, or 4 language screens those need to be isolated before you update.

  • Panther 10.3.9 to Tiger

I have just upgraded my Tiger to Snow Leopard. Is it possible to upgrade my Panther 10.3.9 to Tiger with my Tiger 10.4.9 disk. and if I can is it legal since it will be the only tiger that I am running.
The Tiger was purchased on the pro book. The Panther is a 12 inch 1.33 PowerPC G4

Discs for specific computer models can't be used in
another model of computer; and beyond that, a disc
set for an Intel-based Mac won't work in a PPC Mac.
So, it's off to find a retail full install disc for the other one.
    Good luck & happy computing!

You don't need a computer to activate a new iOS device anymore. Anything with iOS 5 can be activated over a WiFi network (or cellular if that applies).

  • Install Panther  on a G4 w/ Tiger to be installed on top of that ?eMac DVDs

FIRST, let me say that I know that I this a long post, thanks for bearing with me. If you would prefer NOT to deal with all of these issues then, please feel free to your option by dealing with only 1, 2 or 3, etc. of the issues.
    Hi,
I have several questions that I would like to get some clarification on.
    A) To start with has anyone dealt with Fastmanc.com and had any kind of problems in regards to ordering older versions of Mac OSs and/or being sent machine specific Install packages that didn't match what you used, e,g, sent eMac install for use on a G4?
I've ordered a full installation package for Panther and with it comes with an updating CD for the updates through 10.3.9.
1)However, they told me that they were the install DVDs for an eMac. They guaranteed(not in writing) me that I would not have problems doing the install even though I have a G4 DP. I ordered these OS install DVDs after questioning them quite closely about this issue. At present I'm running a G4 DP 500(GigabitEthernet) with 512 MB of RAM, 2. ATI Radeon videocards and I have a completely updated version of 10.2.8(security patches et al). Will the fact that I'm using the install package for an eMac bring any problems my way during the installation and afterwards? If so, what kind and how serious a set of problems are likely to occur? I don't understand why having a more powerful and flexible setup wouldn't be able to handle the install from an eMac?
    2) The install DVDs for 10.4 are the update version again for the eMac and a CD with all of the Apple OS updates. The CD contains all of the updates through OS 10.4.11. Should I be aware of any issues during the installation process for Tiger?
    3) My HD(actually, I have 3) the original 40 GB is a Hitachi/IBM Deskstar, which is slaved to a new Seagate 120 GB, and an external Maxtor 1 Touch 300 GB HD, the Maxtor is used for auto backup(Retrospect 6.0.195).
a)I have partitioned the Seagate into 4 segments, 1) Seagate 10.2., 2) Seagate 10.3, 3) Seagate 10.4 and 4) Seagate 9.0 (for all of Apple OS 9 legacy software, 3rd party apps, and all of the work that I produced while using OS 9, etc.) The Hitachi/IBM has three partitions and all are almost completely full.
    4) Installation locations
4a) Now what I'm wondering is, when I install all of Panther, will I be able to install it in the partition designated S.G. 10.3.? IF not, into what partition is it likely to end up?
4b) Being that 10.4(Tiger) is an upgrade version installation will it automatically attach/install itself into the same partition where Panther installed? Or, can I designate it to install into the partition that I labeled as S.G. 10.4? This is where I would prefer to have it install.
4c) If 10.4 does install into the S.G. 10.4 partition will it function seamlessly being that it is separated from 10.3 which it is supposed to install itself over the top of? (I believe that the correct Tech description for this process.)
    5) If there is anything that I haven't thought of, haven't made clear or if you have any caveats or other suggestions, then please feel free to include them.
Thanks for whatever assistance that you may provide.

    Hi,
first thing is to check that you have the updated firmware for you GE installed.
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=86117
If you have any OS installed run Apple System profiler and check the versiom, it should be 4.2.8
You need an OS 9 installation to be able to run the firmware update in case the firmware is old.

  • Fan Ramps to High/Loud in Panther and is fine in Tiger?

Just got my Dual 2ghz, the PCI 4gig max Ram version (currently 2.5 gigs installed), and in Panther 10.3.3 the fan begins ramping up after the OS loads and continues to cycle upwards until it reaches what I can only imagine is it's high setting. I stuck some ribbons on the back of the grill and they are floating in the wind. It's the fan on the bottom of the tower underneath the video card connection. I have a Panther partition and a Tiger partition. Tiger seems fine. Panther is a wind tunnel.
Does anyone, hopefully someone at apple, know how to fix this. I would love to stay in 10.3.3 on the Panther partition cause I'm catering to some moody software. Tiger is up to date. If I have to upgrade I will, but can't we fix this issue without upgrading. Is it the Radeon 9600 (128mb, Dual DVI) video card? I've noticed that none of the ATI updates address that card. The system does have problems coming back from sleep in Panther. That's usually caused by PCI cards but maybe the AGP card isn't happy. I should re-seat the card... I will.. Haven't tested sleep in Tiger yet. Seems to be running fine, and the fact that it's ok in Tiger leads me to believe that there has got to be a software fix for this thing. I know the boys and girls at apple are clever enough to fix this. I mean... come on... they brought us Final Cut and iPods. How hard is it to fix a fan? Please don't tell me I have to lug this thing into a nearby repair shop for re-calibration. Hook a brother up. Eagerly awaiting the miracle cure. Thanks for any input towards the fix.

    Hi Paul,
The G5 ran this way under Panther from the start. I need the Panther partition until all my software is Tiger capable. Plus my version of Pro Tools LE doesn't recommend that I go to the most up to date version of Panther. I think they recommend 10.3.6 unless I upgrade the Pro Tools software to the next level, which will cost me. You know how it goes. I was just hoping that the system I had on my G4 could be transfered over to my G5 partition and work as well there as it does on the G4, which it does except for the fan issue. I will try a fresh install of Panther since I cloned the drive originally. I'll let ya know what happens. Thanks.

  • Panther 10.3.9 to Tiger 10.4.3 Upgrade

I have a 15" aluminum Powerbook G4 that I'm trying to upgrade to Tiger 10.4.3 from Panther 10.3.9. The installation runs thru without issues but when the system reboots all I get is a plain blue screen. I tried repairing the disk and permissions and also erase/install but to no avail. The system starts only if I safe boot. I can reinstall Panther without issues. Has anyone experienced this before?
    Thanks

    Final Update:
I took the powerbook to my local Apple Store and had them try to load Tiger. To make a long story short, the logic board had to be replaced. This was done at no charge even though the warranty had expired long ago. It seems strange that the logic board is fine for Panther but not for Tiger.
Anyway, my thanks to all that posted suggestions and to Apple for repairing the unit.

  • Can not upgrade from Panther 10.3.9 to Tiger 10.4

I have a PMG4 AGP 1.4 ghz (upgrade from OWC) 2 GB ram and three SCSI hard drives 147/147/40 (upgrades from OWC).
I upgraded to Tiger 10.4 from Panther about six months ago. And the upgrade never worked. After the upgrade for Tiger, the screen would look gray with the Apple logo and the spinning icon, then it would remain gray but the Apple logo will change to a circle with a diagonal line across it and it will stay that way forever.
So I been stuck with Panther ever since. (My iMac-G4 Video Special Edition did take the upgrade very well). I called OWC and they said that their drives were tested for Tiger and didn‘t have any problems. (how about the processor upgrade?)
I also took the computer to Apple store for advise, and one of their techs told me that the hard drive could be the problem.
So last night I decided to try it again but on the other drive (the one I‘m using as a starup disk with panther 10.3.9). Same thing.
By doing the same thing it tells me that the hard drives are the problem.
Please help because I really don‘t know what to do of this.
    Thanks,
    Oscar

You might try removing third party hard ware. Specifically, the SCSI drives. Get the systme back to original configuration with only keyboard and mouse and give it a go.

  • Problems upgrading from Panther 10.3.9 to Tiger

I am having problems upgrading my Mac 500mhtz which currently runs Mac OS X 10.3.9 (Panther). It starts the installation process, I choose the language that I want (EnglisH) then the next screebbn says " Alert - Thius software cannot be installed on this computer" . The options I have is Resart or Startup Disk . I don't understand whythis happening becasue I meet the requirements. I have about 6 gigs of space ti stall and from what I read Tiger needs 3 gigs. I have loked through many forums and have not found the answer to my question. Does anybody know the answer to this solution. I have also backed up my User profile and are planning on doing a clean install once when installing Tiger.

    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
That error frequently appears if you don't use the retail Tiger installer discs. Mac OS X installer discs are system specific or retail versions. You don't want to install another Mac's installer discs, for reasons my FAQ states here:
    http://www.macmaps.com/upgradefaq.html#SYSTEMSPECIFIC
I'd also look that whole FAQ over and see whether or not you really are ready for an upgrade.
In addition, there is no such thing as a "clean install". Here are the various types of installation options available:

  • Moving from Panther 10.3.9 to Tiger

I have put off buying the new software, mainly due to a lack of funds. My concern is my security. I bank online and my bank only recognizes Safari from the latest Tiger version of OSX. What I don't want is to buy the new version only to find out that in two weeks the LATEST software version is out and I got to fork out more bux. Any thoughts?

    Hello,
Well, you can be certain that Leopard (10.5) will not be released next week. But, that's as much as anyone can say.
All we know is that Apple will be "previewing" 10.5 at the August 7 show. So, that tells us it won't be out before then.
And, if it's like their previous OS releases, it will likely be a few months after it's preview before the earliest likely public release.
But, Apple is a very secretive company, and they like to surprise us. So, I wouldn't be surprised if they were to announce the release of 10.5 at the supposed "preview" (like they did with the early release of the iMac CoreDuo).
But, all you can do is guess.
Some people say the end of the year, others say next year, and some (like me) figure it could be any time now.
Consider that we are up to version 10.4.7 now. And, unless they break from history, and start releasing 10.4.7.x type updates, then we only have .8 and .9 left for them to go for maintenance releases. And, they have usually released .9 a month or so before the next version.
But, nothing is certain, and all you can do is guess.
Do you take a shot now, or do you wait?
The longer you wait to buy the current version, the less time you'll use it before it's replaced.
But, are you going to be the first one to jump on 10.5, or are you going to want to see if it works smoothly for others first? If you are planning to wait a bit, then 10.4 would serve you well while you wait.
It really comes down to what is most important to you. Do you want to start using Safari 2.x now? Or, can you use another browser for a month to a year until 10.5 is released?
That's the thing, all anyone can say is it won't be available until after it's previewed at the August 7 show.
After that, it's anyone's guess as to whether it will be available the following week or even December of 2007. You just won't know until they release it.
Apple's good at keeping secrets. That's why they are able to get people to buy the same thing over and over again.
Look at how many people buy a new iMac, and then buy another one a month later when the newer model is announced. If they let people know about the new model early, then they'd only sell one computer instead of two.
It's crazy, but some people are stuck on having to get the latest model every time a new one is released. And, if those people knew a new computer was coming out tomorrow, they'd wait for it rather than buying the current model.
Take the new wireless Mighty Mouse as another example. Many people purchased the old one last week, yesterday, whatever. Now, those same people are considering spending another $70 to buy the new Mighty Mouse version.
For Apple, that means they get $140 out of the same person. But, if they announced last week that a new model was coming out today, then they'd have only made $70 from the same person because they would have waited.
So, you can see it's clearly in Apple's favor (and their nature) to keep quiet.
If you decide you want to wait for the next version of OS X, you can consider using alternative browsers such as FireFox, Netscape, Camino, Opera, etc. while you wait.
    I hope this helps.

  • How to upgrade from Panther (10.3.9) to Tiger (10.4.x)

I have a G3-600 with a CDRW drive. I've been able to upgrade it from 10.0.3 to 10.3.9 with a purchased set of 10.3 install cdroms. I'd like to make the jump to 10.4, since I've been told that my machine can handle it. However, the 10.4 upgrade distribution that I can purchase comes on DVD. Can someone recommend a way to do this successfully? Locally, I can purchase a USB external DVD-rom drive and try using it, or possibly try to read the upgrade DVD in and store an image onto an external Hard Drive, then attach the drive to the G3 machine and try to upgrade with it.
    Any suggestions welcomed.
    -Bob

You could look for a CD version of Tiger although they are probably next to impossible to find. You cannot use a USB drive because your computer cannot boot from a USB drive. You would need a Firewire drive. You could certainly image the DVD but to do so would require a DVD drive. If you have access to another Mac with a DVD drive, then you could install via Target Disk Mode.

  • Upgrading from Panther 10.3.8 to Tiger

Is this as straightforward as buying the upgrade?
Can i just load this over the top, currently having to run Leonardo ISDN software, does this have any issues with Tiger?
    Thanks

    Hi Keelie and welcome!
As regards Leonardo, you will have to ask the vendors if it is Tiger compatible or if you need a new version.
As regards updating to Tiger, the following may assist you:
There are no guarantees, but following this procedure when installing updates and upgrades on your Mac will go a long way towards avoiding unpleasant after effects and ‘post-update stress disorder’.
It is also worth noting that it is an extreme rarity for updates to cause upsets to your system, but they may well reveal pre-existing ones, particularly those of which you may have been unaware. If you are actually aware of any glitches, make sure they are fixed before proceeding further.
So before you do anything else:
If you can, make a full backup first.
Turn off sleep mode for both screen and hard disk.
    1. Repair Permissions (in Disk Utility)
    2. Verify the state of your hard disk using Disk Utility. If any faults are reported, restart from your install disk (holding down the C key), go to Disk Utility, and repair your startup disk. Restart again to get back to your startup disk.
At least you can now be reasonably certain that your system does not contain any obvious faults that might cause an update/upgrade to fail.
    3. Download the correct version of the COMBO update from the Apple download site. If your car runs on gasoline you would not want to fill the tank with diesel, so don’t try to install the PPC updater on an Intel Mac!
If you prefer to download updates via Software Update in the Apple menu (which would ensure that the correct version for your Mac was being downloaded), it is not recommended to allow SU to install major (or even minor) updates automatically. Set Software Update to just download the updater without immediately installing it. There is always the possibility that the combined download and install (which can be a lengthy process) might be interrupted by a power outage or your cat walking across the keyboard, and an interrupted install will almost certainly cause havoc. Once it is downloaded, you can install at a time that suits you. You should make a backup copy of the updater on a CD in case you ever need a reinstall.
Using the Combo updater ensures that all system files changed since the original 10.4.0 are included, and any that may have been missed out or subsequently damaged will be repaired. The Delta updater, although a temptingly smaller download, only takes you from the previous version to the new one, i.e. for example from 10.4.9 to 10.4.10. Software Update will generally download the Delta updater only. The preferable Combo updater needs to be downloaded from Apple's download site.
    Now proceed as follows:
    4. Close all applications.
    5. Unplug all peripherals except your keyboard and mouse.
    6. Install the update/upgrade. Do not under any circumstances interrupt this procedure. Do not do anything else on your computer while it is installing. Be patient.
    7. When it ask for a restart to complete the installation, click restart. This can take longer than normal, there are probably thousands of files to overwrite and place in the correct location. Do nothing while this is going on.
    8. Once your Mac is awake, repair permissions again, and you should be good to go!
If your Mac seems slightly sluggish or ‘different’, perform a second restart. It can’t hurt and is sometimes efficacious!
    9. Open a few of your most used applications and check that all is OK. In this connection please remember that not all manufacturers of third party applications and plug-ins, add-ons, haxies etc, will have had time to do any necessary rewrites to their software to make them 10.4.10. compliant. Give them a weeks or two while you regularly check their websites for updates. This applies particularly to plug-ins for Safari 3.
N.B. Do not attempt to install two different updates at the same time as each may have different routines and requirements. Follow the above recommendations for each update in turn.

  • OS X Tiger can't boot up from my HD

I have recently installed 10.4 on my G4 and I am having start up problems, I have two internal hard drives a 20 gb that was factory installed and an 80 gb ATA that I installed myself. I previously had 10.33 running perfectly on the second drive and the origianl OS 9.2 on the factory installed drive. After I installed Tiger the machine starts up I am met with the Grey apple then it changes to the 'prohibited' circle with a line through, I have tried the following with no avail:
    1. Reset the PRAM
    2. Reset the NVRAM
    3. Reformatted the orignal hard drive and re installed from the Retail disk
    4. Held option at start up and selected the OS X volume as a start up disk
    5. Ran disk doctor from the install disk.
    6. Removed the third party RAM and replaced it
If I boot from the OS 9 volume and then select the OS X volume as the start up disk and restart, OS X runs first time, but once the computer is shut down it reverts to not starting up. If II start up in Safe Boot mode the screen reads 'waiting for boot volume...' and keeps repeating without doing anything.
Until last week I could get by starting up from OS9, but my VGA monitor packed in and instead of getting a new VGA monitor I got an Apple cinema display, that can't run in OS 9!
Can anyone help, I'm sure this something stupid but I cant figure how the same hardware set up can work in Panther and not in Tiger.
    PowerMac G4 450 AGP graphics   Mac OS X (10.4)

I am having exactly the same problem after upgrading my G4 dual 450 with a GigaDesigns 7A-1600U. I am using 10.3.9 Only by switching off can my machine "see" the startup disk. If I have to, or decide to, do a restart by clicking on the button in the menu under the Apple Logo, extreme top left of the desktop, holding the option key down, so that Startup Manager should show the startup disk, does NOT show the icon of the statup disk.
I have to power down, hold power switch for six seconds, then power on with option key held down. Then I see the necessary icon, can choose it and get a startup. I installed Panther from a retail disk set and upgraded by download from the Apple site. Firstly 10.3.8 and then 10.3.9. Worse still, I cannot install anything that asks for a restart before installation from a CD. I am wondering if I should reset the logic board, ( press the little switch near the battery).
Like mitchell I have done everything else.
    Any ideas, please?

  • How do I install Tiger on a G3 iMAC from an external DVD drive?

I want to install Tiger on my PPC G3 iMAC. It is 500MHZ with 512 MB Ram, running 10.3.9. It has a CD drive, but CD version of Tiger is no longer available. I purchased a retail version of Tiger, and, on the advice of the Apple Store personnel, purchased an external DVD drive. It is a USB Lacie drive. My iMAC sees the DVD, but when I click the Install icon, it has a Restart button. Clicking the button restarts for 10.3.9. Same thing happens when I use the "C" key. When I try to assign the DVD drive as the startup drive, it says "ding" and won't assign it. What can I do next?

Take the DVD drive back and exchange it for a Firewire model. You cannot boot the iMac from a USB drive. This is basic information your Apple store personnel should know unless you failed to tell them what Mac model you have.
