Panther 99% startup progress bar, then hangs

A month ago I applied the latest security update to an iMac CRT CD 500MHz slot load no firewire running Panther v10.3.9. At startup it does 99% of the progress bar, then hangs. I can log in to it with another Mac via my network and access my files. I can't boot from my Panther DVD because CD drive and no firewire (the HD was a transplant from an identical iMac which died). I can however boot into Single User Mode as root. I have read that trashing login prefs can fix this problem, but I don't know which file to trash in Panther. I want to run Disk Utility to correct permissions, but I don't think that's possible in Single User Mode.
Any suggestions greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Thanks Robert, that link was very useful. Booting without extensions was the very first thing I tried I tried step 5 of the link you provided, then I manually installed Applejack and ran all 5 tests. Although fsck did correct errors and some QuickTime and iTunes permissions were bad, boot behavior is as before: hangs just before login screen. Applejack did however make boot time a bit shorter.
I'm giving up, I'm just going to copy my data to another Mac over the network or remove the disk drive to copy the files, then just install Panther on a new hard disk and swap that one in.
It sure limits things to have no DVD drive and no firewire.
Thanks
Sean

Hello, my name is Todd, I recently dowloaded PS CC 2014. I have used PS for decades. The crop tool will show the progress bar, then at about 25% it will totally stop, even on VERY small 72dpi images. What can I do? Thanks!

Double check all the settings in the crop tool, and make sure you aren't telling it to create a HUGE image as a result of your settings.

  • Can I remove the startup progress bar from a Flex app?

    Hey all,
I have built a few charts for my companies' website: http://www.midwestmarket.org/page/Area+Control+Error
On all of them, I have noticed that there's a delay of 3 or 4 seconds from the time the page loads, a progress bar shows, and then the graph is actually shown.
The charts in question are all Flex 3 builder built, and I am upgrading now to Flash 4 builder. But, still I see the progress bars.
I know that Fusion Charts doesn't have this same startup routine, those charts pop right up as soon as the site is loaded. Now Fusion is of course build to JUST be a chart tool and probably doesn't load as much stuff. But, is it possible to get there with Flash 4 builder?

    hi,
With flashbuilder you first need to load the swf, then it creates the display objects this is what the loadbar is there for, if you have embedded assets then that bar will stay even longer. Once the application creation sequence is complete the displaybar disappears and then your application is displayed.
Now imagine removing that bar, on a slow connection with a 'large' app, the user would be faced with a blank screen for several seconds, not the desired end-user experience we are after.
You can make it more interesting by customising the pre-loader with say a company splash screen which offers a more visually appealling startup
this is a simple example of a custom preloader, source is included
    http://flashhub.net/ezflex/testloader/
One quick note with preloaders there is no flex sdk at that point so preloaders have to comply with the immediate requirements of the flashplayer api. So basically on flash components.

  • After a series of very short power outages in my town our Imac boots with the pinwheel going and a progress bar, then the users screen comes up but our passwords no longer opens up desktops, just returns to the users choice screen.  What should I do?

I'm on the choose a user screen and when I enter the password the screen goes white then returns to choosing a user. The system is rebooting differently when I tried turning off then back on, the pinwheel screen has a progress bar and it takes minutes instead of seconds.
    what should I try?

You can try an SMC reset, especially if there was a power outage.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964
If the issue seems like it just doesn't want to accept the password you'll need to boot to the install disc/recovery partition of the hardrive by holding the 'option' key while booting up. There should be a utility in there to reset your password.

  • IMac 24 won't start up, grey screen with progress bar, then shuts off

My computer froze all my applications yesterday. When I went to restart it a grey screen came up with the progress bar at the bottom. It would advance about 1/3 and then the progress bar would start over. It would advance about 1/3 again then the computer shuts off. It does the same thing trying to start it up in safe mode. I started it with my snow leopard disk and it will allow me to restore the computer with time machine (which we have), but I wasn't sure if I should try something else before that. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Many thanks.

    Hello:
I would try restoring as an approach to eliminating some software glitch. However, you might also have a hardware problem (not good news).

  • My iMac displays apple and progress bar then shuts off

Hi I heard the apple bar erases the memory when this happens. Does anyone have another option?

The progress bar usually indicates it is attempting a Safe Boot, which does clear some Caches. It doesn't erase the memory.
    First, try resetting NVRAM: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1379
Can you boot into Recovery? If so, try to repair the disk in Disk Utility.

  • OS X: Gray progress bar, then MacBook shuts down

    Hi Apple Community,
Last year I bought my first Mac ever for University and have been quite happy with it so far.
A few days ago I closed my MacBook when its battery was at ~2%. Normally when battery is that low when closing the MacBook it usually goes into hibernation instead of sleep. When put it on power again about an hour later and opened it again it wouldn't start properly. When I try to boot it now, I see the apple logo with the rotating thingy and a progress bar which fills up in about 5 or 7 minutes. After the bar is filled up the MacBook shuts down and I have to do it all again. So the computer never starts.
I did some research on the subject but all of the solutions couldn't help me. Internet recovery doesn't work, because it doesn't allow me to connect to my university VPN (which is necessary to use in uni accomodation). I also don't have a Recovery CD.
When I start Disk Utility (Cmd + Alt + R + P or something) it won't work as well and just tell me that the Macintosh HD "could not be repaired after three tries" or similar.
HOWEVER: It can't be a hardware problem, because I'm running Windowss 7 via bootcamp (from where I'm writing right now) and everything seems to be alright on here.
    My Mac:
MacBook Pro 13" (mid 2012) running on Mavericks.
I'd really appreciate anyone who could help me. I have all my important files synced to my dropbox, but I don't really like the idea of reinstalling OS X
    Thanks in advance,
    Luka

Guess that's really my only option, thanks. I thougt OS X were indestructible.

  • Now that I've installed Yosemite, my computer keeps telling me that iPhoto needs to be upgraded.  When it starts "upgrading the database", it gets almost to the end of the progress bar, then sits and spins.  It  won't finish.

My computer is an iMac that was made in late 2009, and was purchased by me in 2010.  It has a 3.06 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo processor.  I have more than 800 GB of storage available.  Last week I installed the Yosemite OS.  I'm having trouble with the upgrading of iPhoto.  When it says it's upgrading the database, it never finishes.  I've started the process a few times, and the progress line always gets to the same place when it sits and spins for hours at a time without any more progress.  I thought about putting some of my 10,000 + pictures on discs to see if that would help, but I can't open iPhoto to get at them.  Would that help, anyway?  My son thinks this computer is too old to accept all updates.  The hard drive was replaced 2 years ago.
    Thanks for any help.

    Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Repair Database. If that doesn't help, then try again, this time using Rebuild Database.
    If that fails:
    Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. (In early versions of Library Manager it's the File -> Rebuild command. In later versions it's under the Library menu.)
This will create an entirely new library. It will then copy (or try to) your photos and all the associated metadata and versions to this new Library, and arrange it as close as it can to what you had in the damaged Library. It does this based on information it finds in the iPhoto sharing mechanism - but that means that things not shared won't be there, so no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your events, albums and keywords, faces and places back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.
    Regards
    TD

  • I have attempted to download the free trial of Acrobat XI, the application file appears to be in the download folder however the setup progress bar was hanging so I cancelled.  Now I don't know what to do, please advise

Please advise how I install the free trial of Adobe Acrobat XI Pro.  I started the download process and can see the files in the Downloads folder however the setup screen was hanging so I cancelled.  Now I don't know what to do.  It goes back to the original download screen

    Thanks Pat
I have now brought my daughters laptop into work as she has CS6 so I thought it would be easier to set up her laptop to the work network, set up an email account for her and attempt to email my 270 certificates that way. How wrong was I.  First of all Acrobat X Pro would not open so I did a reinstall.  Still wouldnt open so I had to find a patch to fix it.  I can now open it.  When I open Word 2013 and check the options, the PDFMaker is in the active section but when I open word the Adobe toolbar is not appearing. I've opened Acrobat X Pro and have discovered that it's missing a plugin - Convert2AdobePdf (DistillerPI.api) so I'm now in the process to find out how to install this plugin.  I have seen through this site that there was a problem with Word 2013 and the Adobe Toolbar which is exactly my new problem.  I have to say, after 3 days of trying to perform what you would think is a very simple function, I'm ready to just convert 270 individual pdf's and email them individually, I would have had the job done by now !

light gray screen with the gray Apple logo and dial-thing. Then
instead of refreshing into the blue screen with the startup progress
bar (the one before the login screen), the computer refreshed
into a light gray screen with four black rectangles (bricks) across
the top of the screen. Haven't seen this described before.

    Thanks!

    Update:
Reinstall of the 10.4.9 updater using 10.4.0
partition as startup disk resolved the issue,
but Safari crashed whenever it encountered
secure website "https" and it did not do
that with the previous 10.4.9 installation.
10.4.10 did not resolve the problem, but
now running the new Safari and 10.4.11
    things seem OK so far.

  • My iMac will not boot up.  I  have a 3 year old iMac running   Lion.  When I push the power button I get the Apple logo, then the circular thing made up of small lines revolving iin a clockwise direction, then a progress bar which never fills in.

The progress bar then disappears and the system never boots up.  How can I get this machine to boot without a start-up disc?
Are there any keyboard shortcuts available?

I think you'll need those grey original install disks as it sounds like your harddrive is corrupted.

  • Internet recovery gets stuck on the spinning globe with the progress bar below.

    Hello Everybody!
I'm trying to fix the iMac (27-inch, Mid 2010) of my friend. He said it doesn't boot anymore and just gets stuck on the grey screen with the Apple logo and the spinning wheel below. So my first step was to go into the Startup Manager by pressing the Option key after the chime. There I was presented with the Macintosh HD and the Recovery HD. After selecting the Recovery HD to access the Disk Utilities I got stuck on the grey screen with the Apple logo and the spinning wheel again. So I guess the data on the drive is corrupted and might have to be replaced. But before I do that, I wanted to give the Internet Recovery a try. I connected the iMac to the internet using an ethernet cable and pressed Command + Option + R after the chime and the spinning globe appeared with the info: "starting recovery process from network. This may take a while". After a short time the sentences are replaced by a progress bar and a timer that is counting up. The progress bar then moved for a tiny little bit and then nothing happens anymore but the timer keeps counting up. I waited for quiet some time before I gave up. I did not get any errors so I can't provide any other useful information. Can anyone give my some advice? I read in other posts that the ISPs of specific countries block ports which are needed for the internet recovery. I'm in Thailand right now. Does anyone know if that might cause the problem?
Thank you for all your help!

Neither we nor Apple support jailbroken iDevices.
