Panther and QT7.1.6

Will installing QT7.1.6 screw my FCP4.5 appliaction up..it did with tiger 10.4.10 am wondering if it will work with the latest QT...
Simon

ummm, it's been recommended by apple and many knowledgeable and experienced users on various fora that fcp 4.5 works best and should stay with os 10.3.9 and qt 6.5.
update at your own risk but do a search first and you'll find plenty of woeful tales of mixing qt 7, tiger and fcp 4.5

Can an earlier version of TechTool Pro be used to diagnose and fix issues with a drive with Panther 10.3.9 installed?
I have tried to install TechTool pro version 4.1.1 for Panther on my beige G3 and it will not launch. It "unexpectedly quits".
Also, I have a second drive that won't boot a cloned copy of OS X Panther and I can't use this drive to boot from and use same version of TechTool on that drive to diagnose the primary boot drive.
The idea was to have 2 versions of OS X Panther to be able to fix issues with both internal drives when needed. Can't seem to be able to do this.
The TTP 4 CD won't boot from the beige's internal CD drive, either. I have an additional CD drive connected via a PCI FW card, but I beleive that the beige Macs are not bootable through FW. So, that won't work.
I have an older version 3.X of TTP that does boot from CD and can be used from OS 9 to diagnose an OS X system. I used to use this version to fix issues with OS X 10.2.8 Jaguar. Since I appear to have some limitations, is it advisable to use an older disk repair app to fix a newer OS X system?
I realize that it might not "fix" everything but will it fix what it'll recognized and not do any additional file damage to a newer system?
    Bad idea?
I am kinda stuck as I have a perfectly good working version of OS X Panther running on this Mac, but with no way to do any disk maintenance or repairs with the Panther version of TTP.
    Any Suggestions?

    Boot to OS 9.
    Run XpostFacto.
    Insert the Panther Install CD.
Boot to the CD (and claim you will install on the cloned drive) -- this will get you running off the Install CD, but do not install. Instead, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu as your first action.
Use Disk Utility to Repair the cloned disk. Run again until it comes clean or gets stuck. Then Repair Permissions once.
Quit Disk Utility and set Startup to OS 9 and Restart.
    Run XpostFacto.
Select the cloned drive and choose to boot to it.
If no success, go back to OS 9 and run XPostFacto again. Select the cloned drive. Uninstall everything. Re-install everything (it takes a while this time) choose to boot to that drive.

  • Crash when attempting to install panther and jaguar

    Hello,
Few days ago I suffered a nasty crash (kernel panic I think) from using Windows Media Player 9 and a partially downloaded movie. After that the computer was unable to restart. Blue screen after showing the starting up window and nothing more. (I asked about that in this thread "what are my chances of full/partial recovery?" http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1008280&tstart=0 ).
Managed to get all my personal files off the crashed Powerbook via another machine using firewire disk target mode. Having managed to successfully do that I thought it was going to be plain sailing from then on. I used Disk Utility to reformat the drive including overwriting with zeros, and the Powerbook drive appeared on the other machine's desktop completely empty and looking fine.
Having disconnected it from the other machine, using Panther install CD 1 to install Panther I got a kernel panic, the message in multiple languages including Japanese saying restart computer, soon after clicking the Install button.
I tried starting from the Jaguar install disk 1, choosing Disk Utilities to reformat the drive again (without zeroing it this time) and tried to install Jaguar instead. Soon after clicking Install the screen went entirely black with a bit of white text in the top left: The installer has quit due to an unexpected error (exit code 0). Please restart your computer.
What's going on? The computer was working fine before the Windows Media Player crash (which occured when viewing movie in full screen mode). I've wiped and reformated the disk and now can't install Panther or Jaguar. What could the problem be? Firmware? I'm guessing without knowing anything. I'm v. surprised the problem is continuing after reformatting the drive. That indicates that the crash effected something other than the contents of the drive?! which I thought was impossible.
Any suggestions would be much apprecaited.
    Thanks.

    Hello,
    Thanks for the replies/info.
Yes the Panther and Jaguar install disks are retail versions, not specific machine versions. And the Jaguar ones worked for the Powerbook before.
The Powerbook I have is the Firewire 500mhz one, Pismo I think it's called. The hard drive is a 60GB one. I didn't have to partition it before.
Reviewing all the above, it would appear that the problem is me not being able to use an internal, built in CD/DVD drive to install from this time? The only other thing it could be I think is the crash I recently had has had some bad effect -- but that's unlikely right? So, I need to get a new DVD drive? Or is there any other way to get the OS onto the Powerbook without getting another internal DVD/CD drive? Is there anyway to install onto the PB from another machine maybe?
Does that sound right?: not being able to use internal DVD/CD drive is the source of my current problem?
    Thanks.

  • Powerpoint 2004 crashing in Panther and Tiger

    Hi,
Have large PPT presentation (333 mb) that crashes when viewed about 3/4 way through. Crashes on 3 different Macs using Panther and Tiger.
When viewed at start, crashes/freezes (crash on 10.4, freeze on 10.3) always crashes at 1 particular text slide. Font is Times New Roman, text box of adequate size. Following slide has 2 small jpgs and small text box. Have removed slides, program still crashes approximately at the point, despite slide removal.
If I start view show halfway through presentation, no crash. Is it a memory thing (although I have other large presentations without this problem)? When I tried to move half of the slides into a new presentation, it crashed immediately.
I deleted plists, ran Cocktail, shut down and restarted, repaired preferences again, no luck.
I copied it to a Dell laptop with PPT 2003 just to see what would happen and it runs on that, but that's not the laptop that's being taken to talk.
Odd, I searched and there are no crash logs for PowerPoint on either computer. I finally had to cause another crash and copy/paste the log from the "Powerpoint has encountered an internal error" window.
Here it is: Boss' presentation is this Monday. Desperate for help!

  • ITunes6 and QT7 Installation Problems (Error 1402)

I have had many problems since trying to install iTunes 6 and QT7. I was getting error message-3, so I tried to download the stand alone QT7, as these pages have suggested. I received the following error message when I tried this:
"Error 1402. Could not open key: HKEYLOCALMACHINE\SOFTWARE\Applce Computer, INc.\QuickTime\ActiveX. Verify that you have sufficient access to that key, or contact your support personnel."
I clicked OK and the following message came up:
"Error:-1603 Fatal error during installation. Consult Windows Installer Help (MSI.chm) or MSDN for more information."
How can I access the HKEY... listed above to correct whatever needs to be corrected so that I can regain my iTunes?
    Thanks for all suggestions!

    Hi Theresa,
After much trial and error, I think that I found a solution. Try this:
I must say that I am not a pc wizard and I don't know the technical reasons for why the following worked, it just did! So if there are any pc geeks out there, be sure to chime in. Anyway, this is what I did. First uninstall QuickTime if you do have it on your pc. If not, just go to the next step:
Go to START, then RUN. Type in regedit and then click OK. Your REGISTRY EDITOR should open. You should see HKEYLOCALMACHINE in the scroll down menu on the left, with a small box to its left. Make sure that the inside of the box has a negative sign - this will open up the next set of subfolders. Next, make sure that the subfolder, SOFTWARE, has a negative sign in the small box to its left. Next, make sure that there is a negative sign in the box next to the subfolder entitled, Apple Computer, Inc. You'll see at least three subfolders: iPod, iTunes and QuickTime. Click once on the QuickTime folder until it is highlighted and then delete it. You will be asked if you want to delete QuickTime and its subfolders. Click ok and then close out the Registry Editor.
Next, download the stand alone QuickTime 7 at this link (you may have to cut and paste this link to open this website):
    http://www.apple.com/quicktime/download/standalone.html
When you download the stand alone QT7, you may get a couple of error messages (I did), but if you repeatedly click ok (like I did), the QT7 player should load with no problems (like it did for me).
Again, I am no pc geek, but this worked for me and I have gained access to iTunes6 (with video capacity) and my complete library is intact. Nothing like trial and error!! Good luck -- I hope this works for you!

  • Support for Canon raw files in panther and iPhoto

I can't get iPhoto 6 to import the raw files (.cr2) from my Canon 400D.
I can use image capture and also Elements 4 with Raw support, so I am not sure if its the operating system level (panther) or something else.
I did use iPhoto with my previous Canon with .CRW files and that worked fine to import them, organise them and then edit etc externally in Photoshop.
Is there any way out there to do this without upgrading the OS or iPhoto, I appreciate I have a way to continue working but miss the convenience of the easy import.

Suggest you buy (about $10 - $20) a USB memory card reader. Just plug your camera's memory card into it & copy the pic files to your Mac. Quicker & easier than interfacing the camera for pic transfer.
     Cheers, Tom

  • Fan Ramps to High/Loud in Panther and is fine in Tiger?

Just got my Dual 2ghz, the PCI 4gig max Ram version (currently 2.5 gigs installed), and in Panther 10.3.3 the fan begins ramping up after the OS loads and continues to cycle upwards until it reaches what I can only imagine is it's high setting. I stuck some ribbons on the back of the grill and they are floating in the wind. It's the fan on the bottom of the tower underneath the video card connection. I have a Panther partition and a Tiger partition. Tiger seems fine. Panther is a wind tunnel.
Does anyone, hopefully someone at apple, know how to fix this. I would love to stay in 10.3.3 on the Panther partition cause I'm catering to some moody software. Tiger is up to date. If I have to upgrade I will, but can't we fix this issue without upgrading. Is it the Radeon 9600 (128mb, Dual DVI) video card? I've noticed that none of the ATI updates address that card. The system does have problems coming back from sleep in Panther. That's usually caused by PCI cards but maybe the AGP card isn't happy. I should re-seat the card... I will.. Haven't tested sleep in Tiger yet. Seems to be running fine, and the fact that it's ok in Tiger leads me to believe that there has got to be a software fix for this thing. I know the boys and girls at apple are clever enough to fix this. I mean... come on... they brought us Final Cut and iPods. How hard is it to fix a fan? Please don't tell me I have to lug this thing into a nearby repair shop for re-calibration. Hook a brother up. Eagerly awaiting the miracle cure. Thanks for any input towards the fix.

    Hi Paul,
The G5 ran this way under Panther from the start. I need the Panther partition until all my software is Tiger capable. Plus my version of Pro Tools LE doesn't recommend that I go to the most up to date version of Panther. I think they recommend 10.3.6 unless I upgrade the Pro Tools software to the next level, which will cost me. You know how it goes. I was just hoping that the system I had on my G4 could be transfered over to my G5 partition and work as well there as it does on the G4, which it does except for the fan issue. I will try a fresh install of Panther since I cloned the drive originally. I'll let ya know what happens. Thanks.

  • Want to buy IPOD for G4 using Panther and the older USB port

I want to buy a used IPOD. I have the 800 megahertz G4 with Panther 10.39 and I guess that older USB port. I hear is isn't USB 2.0. Which Ipod should I buy that will work?
I want an ipod but I don't want to buy a brand new computer for a few months!
    Thank you very kindly,
    Tom in Arizona

Thanks very much. The only one that seems to be a good match is Ipod Shuffle. There remains, however, one problem. Its corresponding version of Itunes is 4.7.1, and I have 7.4.2. Is it possible to get version 4.7.1 and repopulate it with my songs so that I can use Ipod Shuffle? This would appear to be a real problem.
    Gracias,
    Tomás
PS: I'm assuming this old macitosh does not have the version 2 USB port. Here's what my system profile lists:
    USB Bus:
    Vendor Name: Apple Computer, Inc.
    Product ID: 32773 ($8005)
    Speed: Up to 12 Mb/sec
    Bus Power (mA): 500

  • Panther and leopard clients on a tiger server...expected problems...

I wanted to share a scenario that is happening in the school district I work for and see if anyone has had any experiences similar and can offer some advise before I blindly proceed.
One of the schools I work in uses a single 10.4x server, and all the users in the school have a network account where they can log into managed work groups.
The computers are all running 10.3x and I have had no problems at all. Users are able to log in, see their network home folders, launch all the allowed applications.
The school is purchasing 76 new Imac computers with the new 10.5 OS on them and I was wondering what kind of problems users might experience when logging into these new workstations if they are bound to the existing server.
I was able to bind a 10.5 mac to the 10.4 server and was able to log in using a network account, see the items that were in my network home folder, launch applications I was permitted to launch and was denied applications denied in the applications preference in workgroup manager for the workgroup I was logged in to.
This is very preliminary testing and was wonder what some of you who are in similar situations have experienced.
Another concern is best described by painting a scenario.
A user logs onto a 10.3 computer and launches an application like imovie, an older version of imovie, and does some work on a project. He then saves it and moves to one of the new imacs with 10.5 on it and a newer version of imovie.
Will the newer version of the application run with the older preference files for it.
Will the preference files be rewritten and if so will the old version of imovie be able to read those or will it try and rewrite them.
Will the project created with the old version of imovie be readable by the new version.
Will the new version of imovie update the project file and if so with the old version of imovie still be able to open it?
I seem to remember reading something about how panther wrote preference files for applications completely differently than tiger did, and if so then can I expect the same for leopard client written pref files.
As you can see I have lots of questions and if I can learn from other peoples experiences then I can go into this knowing a little bit on what I can expect and hopefully this wont be a big disaster.
    Mark
    SD34

Will the newer version of the application run with the older preference files for it.
While I dont know this for certain, I do know that when I did an archive and install (which copies the old preferences for applications as well as the apps themselves to the new system folder) things have worked fine. I think the preference-writing scheme depends on the individual program version, and minor updates to the program (ie: Safari 3.0.3b vs 3.0.4) shouldnt change this.
Will the preference files be rewritten and if so will the old version of imovie be able to read those or will it try and rewrite them.
When you modify any preferences the files will be rewritten. If the programs have similar versions then they should be fine. All preferences are written to the same directory (~/Library/Preferences/) so if the program versions are the same then the preferences will be written similarly.
Will the project created with the old version of imovie be readable by the new version.
I'm assuming you mean going from iMovie HD to iMovie '08. I've not done this personally, but as far as I know the files will import, but the transistions and other special effects that are only available in the older version of iMovie will be removed. The media files and sequences should be preserved.
Will the new version of imovie update the project file and if so with the old version of imovie still be able to open it?
I dont know about the old version of iMovie being able to import the new version's projects, but the new version will update the projects when you save it.
I seem to remember reading something about how panther wrote preference files for applications completely differently than tiger did, and if so then can I expect the same for leopard client written pref files.
I believe the writing of preference files usually depends on the individual application, not the system.

  • Using iSync on Panther and Tiger

    Hello,
I iSync happily between .Mac machines running Tiger.
I'm planning to set up a machine running Panther (so that I can run Epicad SyncAgain) and want to run iSync 1.5 to sync contacts, events and tasks on that machine with my .Mac account. Will I be able to sync my Tiger machines using iSync 2.1 to the same .Mac account? Will Panther iSync 1.5 even work with .Mac today?
Thanks in advance for your feedback.

Doing exactly this, I have had some success, certainly no weirder trouble than I see a lot of folk having right now (occasional unable to login to .Mac server warnings on one of the tiger machines)
    Good luck
    Andy

  • How to clean install/upgrade from9.1/9.2.2 to Panther and make HD space

    Dear group,
After reading many posts looking for answers to my iMac problems, I've decided to make a post. I've an iMac from the 500 series (which came with 128Mb, 20GB HD and 500MHZ and a slot for cd's) which I bought in 2001. From the start I prefered using OS9.1 instead of the OSX 10.0.3 that also came with it. But during the years there were many conflicts between programs and a lot of websites are not viewable now. I added 512mb to the 128mb working memory, but since I added more programs too, the 20GB HD was getting rather full:-(. Also upgraded Os 9.1 to 9.2.2.
My idea was to buy a external HD and to copy the intern HD to the external HD. This way I wouldn't lose any programs (of which 1 I broke the cd of) and then install programs I want to work with on the internal HD. After informing with several Mac-stores, they said this is not possible:-(. So I could only use an external HD for files and docs. When I finally saw an external HD of my choice (WD) it said that minimum OSX 10.3 was needed. This I don't have on my Mac, so didn't bought it. Also my HD was almost full. So I've been copying files to cd's to make some space. Here I read about "firmware" and found out mine does not need update anymore.
Online I bought the Panther software. It's Mac Os X 10.3.2 cd version however it says "eMac" on the cd. The person who sold it said it would be no problem to run on an iMac though. Reading some posts here, I wonder..
    So to my questions:
    How to proceed from here?
Did I understood right that Os 9.1 or higher is needed to upgrade to Os X (Panher) ?
Should I do a clean install of 9.1 again to avoid future conflicts? Or should I chose another type of install (or maybe remove parts or all and if so, how)?
And how to remove other programs from the HD without forgetting plugins or other files of that program that are spread in different folders on the HD?
Or was the Mac store wrong and is it indeed possible to move all to an external HD? And which external HD's are compatible with Os 9.1/Os 9.2?
I've many more questions, but since my post is already lenghtly I'll leave these for another time;-0.
    Kind regards,
    'Vonne

    Hi, Vonne -
Now how do you 'boot' /make an ext. HD a boot drive?
A boot drive is the drive containing the OS from which the the machine boots. If you install a valid OS (an OS of adequate version and one whose install is compatible with that machine) on a external drive, and the machine is capable of booting from that kind of drive, all you need do is one of the following -
    • select the OS on that drive in Startup Manager (control panel in OS 9, or control pane in System Preferences in OSX) and Restart.
    • use Startup Manager to select the OS/drive which you want to use for that startup at the start of the boot process. This article describes using Startup Manager -
Article #HT1310 - Startup Manager: How to Select a Startup Volume
I used the phrase "one whose install is compatible with that machine" carefully. It is certainly possible to replicate (via copying in the case of OS 9, or cloning in the case of OSX) an OS from another machine onto an external drive, and then connect that drive to your machine. However, if the machine that was used as the source for the replication is not the exact same model as yours, it is unlikely that the OS will be viable - although the OS may be of adequate version, OS installs are usually tailored by the installer to match the hardware of the machine upon which it is being installed. A different model will probably have different hardware, and so the replicated OS will not have files in it to support the different hardware.
So I can also chose to remove the whole Os 9 and only put Os X on it? I thought I read somewhere you need to have Os 9 on it before you could
Correct. An install of OSX is stand-alone. Using a full-install disk set for OSX, there is absolutely no requirement at all that any prior version of any OS already be there.
Note, though, that most OS 9 programs are not compatible with OSX. This means that if you remove OS 9, you will not be able to run those programs which are not OSX-native. Some few are compatible with both OS's, such as later versions of AppleWorks 6.
The reason for this is that OS 9 and OSX are not written in the same language, do not have the same roots. OS 9 shares its roots with previous OS's, all the way back to OS 1. OSX is a new critter, written from scratch (although it is, I understand, based somewhat on Unix). The way OSX handles stuff (processes, routines, toolbox calls, etc., as well as the concepts of extensions and control panels and more), are not at all like OS 9 and earlier.
There is a solution for that - OS 9 can be used in the Classic mode under OSX. As Classic, OS 9 is used as a program (not as an OS) in order to provide an environment in which many OS 9-only programs can be run. To be used as Classic, OS 9 must be OS 9.1 or later, preferrably OS 9.2.x.
An install of OS 9 can be used for Classic and still retain its ability to boot the machine as an OS. Many folk have found that when possible it is better to have two installs of OS 9 - one dedicated for use as an OS, the other dedicated for use as Classic. This necessitates having more than one volume available. since it is near impossible to have two installs of OS 9 on the same volume and have them usable without conflict. In this context, a "volume" = an unpartitioned drive, or a partition of a partitioned drive.
Do you've brand names for me? The Mac stores only have the newest types that go from Os X 10.3 or greater
The brand names I have are somewhat outdated. At present I have four bootable firewire drives, three connected full time (the fourth is set up as an emergency boot-and-repair drive for both my G4s). Of those, three are VST brand; VST was bought out several years ago by SmartDisk. The fourth is even older, a FireDrive from MacTell - I have no idea what became of that company.
I have a hunch that most any drive that is connectable via FireWire 400 will be suitable for OS 9, provided that it is reinitialized after receipt. The requirement for OSX 10.3 may pertain to any formatting or backup software that is bundled with the drive. With regard to compatibility with OSX, I understand that using a drive with an Oxford chipset is preferred.
Perhaps someone else more familiar with current drive offerings will post in with more specific info.
How do I verify the drive works as a boot drive?
Same way any piece of hardware is verified - by trying it out. Boot the machine to the drive to verify it is bootable.
They said drag and drop can't be done.
They're wrong, with regard to OS 9. They're right, with regard to OSX.
OS 9 stuff - programs as well as OS's - is eminently copyable via drag and drop.
OSX stuff needs to be cloned using a cloning utility.
Have you experience with booting an internal drive to an ext. drive?
Yes. As I mentioned, I have four bootable firewire drives. Three are connected full time to my G4/500 AGP model; the fourth is an emergency disk. All have bootable OS's on them, of various kinds - a recent duplicate (via drag and drop) of the OS 9.1 on my primary internal drive; OS 9.2.1; and OSX 10.1.5 (which I have rarely used); and (on the emergency disk) a universal install of OS 9.2.1. How do I know they are bootable? Because I tested them by booting the machine to them.
Os X 10.0.3 is on my internal drive, so why should I use the OsX install CD to boot? Or do you mean the install cd of the new OsX (Panther) version?
Because the later versions of OSX have a better version of Disk Utility. The one that came with OSX 10.0.3 may be adequate; however, OSX 10.0 was a public Beta version - the first real release (one classed as a complete OS, not a Beta, i.e. trial, version) of OSX was 10.1.
I wasn't able to see the new cardreader I bought (which should be for Os 8.6 and higher). Could it be something is broken within Os 9.1/9.2.2 and it would be wise to do a reinstall anyway so to fix bugs like that?
If the card reader was not connected when the OS was installed or updated, the set of drivers needed by the card reader were probably not installed. OS 9 installers are sometimes too clever - they read what hardware is available, and install any software available which is needed by that hardware. This means they often do not install software which is not needed at that time; later changes or additions to the hardware can result in an apparent incompatibility, but that oes not mean something is broken. A re-install of the last version installed will sometimes take care of it.
Specifically, see this User Tip (although it addresses USB PCI cards, the same set of extensions is often needed for things like card readers) -
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=607556&
Ok, so it looks like I don't the right Panther software. So maybe good reinstall Os 9? In the 'Help' I find the option to re-install parts or remove parts of the systemprogram. Another option is the so called 'clean install'. And there's the possibility to use the recovery cd. I've no clue which option is best.
As Allan mentioned, it is unlikely that the eMac OSX 10.3.2 disk you got will work - disks that are shipped with a machine are usually model-specific to that machine model. If a disk states a model name on it, it is intended for use with that model. The retail disk sets, those for both OS 9 and OSX, contain a universal installer, one which has assets available to it which allow the installer to place a full, complete OS on any machine model supported by Apple for that OS version.
A Clean Install of OS 9 can be performed only using an original Software Install CD for a machine, or by using a retail OS 9 Install CD of adequate version. A Clean Install neither disturbs nor removes anything - it installs a brand new OS 9 System Folder, renames any previous one to Previous System Folder, installs a standard set of utilities if those are not already present, and does little else. A Clean Install is the only relatively convenient way to change the inherent language of an OS 9 install, or to downgrade the OS version. This Apple KBase article disusses it further -
Article #TA43881 - Mac OS 8, Mac OS 9: Performing a Clean Installation
A Software Restore CD can be a dangerous disk to use. The primary purpose of an OS 9 Software Restore CD is to return the drive to its original "as-shipped" configuration. Although its installer can be set to retain all info already on the drive, it is very easy to accidentally erase the entire drive. I do not think that a Software Restore CD will serve the purposes you have described.
The main difference between a Software Restore CD and a Software Install CD is that a Software Restore CD uses a disk image of the drive as originally shipped as its source, while a Software Install CD uses a library, an archive, of individual software components from which the installer selects as needed to match the machine's hardware configuration. In this context, a retail OS 9 Install CD is much the same as a Software Install CD, except that its archive of software somponents is usually more extensive.
A Software Install CD (and a retail OS 9 Install CD) can also be used to install or re-install individual OS software components. This is accomplished by selecting the Custom button on the Start page of the installer, then the group, then individual items as needed. The requirement here is that the version of the OS 9 on the hard drive must match the one the CD is intended to install.

  • Mac disk error with Halo Universal and QT7.2

This is not a question, but a means of posting a problem for Apple and others to see:
    1) Halo Universal (original and 2.0.2 upgrade) will always create a "volume header error" on my hard drive whenever a checkpoint is reach. This error is found with Disk Utility. The game may be OK for quite a while before actually crashing (unable to load saved game - must start all over).
I use Apple's Disk Utility on the install CD to repair the error.
    2) The original Halo, Combat Evolved, for PPC, upgraded to 1.5.2 works without causing a "volume header error".
The following answer was sent back to me from [email protected]:
This problem has been reported by a number of other users, and we've reproduced it here on our machines. We are 99% sure that Quicktime 7.2 is causing these problems. Unfortunately, the only advice I can give you at the moment would be to try and reinstall Quicktime 7.1.6 to see if this solves your problem.
Here are instructions for rolling back to 7.1.6:
    *Force installation of QuickTime 7.1.6*
    1. Download _QuickTime 7.1.6_
    http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/quicktime716formac.html
but do not attempt to install
    2. Download and launch Pacifist
    http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/12743
    3. In Pacifist, click the "Open Package" button, then locate and open
    the QuickTime 7.1.6 .pkg file.
    4. Click the lock and enter your administrator password, then click
    the "Install" button.]
    5. Download and install the _Mac OS X 10.4.10 combo updater_
    http://wsidecar.apple.com/cgi-bin/nph-reg3rdpty2.pl/product=14214&cat=1&platform =osx&method=sa/MacOSXUpdCombo10.4.10Intel.dmg
Please follow these directions carefully, as not doing things exactly as they are written has caused some users to have to reinstall OS X.
I haven't tried this, but it does sound like it should work - after reading what's been posted for other QT 7.2 problems
I'll continue with the PPC version of Halo until an update for QT7.2 comes out.

Yes, Time Machine will nag you every time you connect a disk and Time Machine isn't configured. You might be able to stop that by selecting the "none" disk.
This is where I hit a problem - I don't remember getting any Install discs when I got my computer and can't find any.
You bought it new, right? 2 discs with gray labels should have been in the box (they're easy to miss, unfortunately). They might be with the small DVD-size booklet.
You will need them, sooner or later. You need the originals (or copies) to run the +Apple Hardware Test+ that's tailored to your Mac, or to reinstall the original version of OSX and Apple apps. And the 2nd disc has your iLife apps on it.
If your Mac didn't come with Snow Leopard, you'll need a retail Snow Leopard disc, too, to repair the file system on your disk, reinstall the Snow Leopard version of OSX, or do a full restore from Time Machine backups.
    What do I do?
If you can't find them call AppleCare. Give them your serial number, and they'll send a replacement set for a nominal fee.
The retail Snow Leopard disc is $29.

In the meantime, how old is the WD disk? It may be failing or have failed.
It's a very long shot, but try different ports, cables, and combinations of the two (sometimes a plug that works fine in one port won't make good contact in another one).
Disk Erase failed with the error:
POSIX reports: The operation couldn’t be completed. Cannot allocate memory
It sounds more like the disk has failed.

  • Panther and Tiger and other issues

deep breath...this is going to be long and detailed, but I am hoping someone here can help me since AppleCare has not been able to figure it out and I am at a loss now. I have been in the iPhoto forum but apparently the problem is much larger than one app.
We have a iBookG4, purchased from a Mac Store in Sept. 2004. It has been to AppleCare 4 times for various problems and 2 hard drive crashes that we have had to do reinstalls ourselves here at home, the most recent repair this past week. When we got it back Wednesday, it only had Panther loaded--we had been running Tiger for over a year--frustrating, but OK, as I had the orginal Tiger disk so I re-installed it. Proceeded to hook up our external and began loading all the pics and music back on the laptop. It would not open our photos, saying we needed to use the newer version of iPhoto. We had been using iPhoto 5.0.4 since March 06. As I looked further Garage Band and iDVD were also missing completely, which we previously had, and I am sure there are others, I just noticed these two since I use them the most.
So I start all over: reinstall Panther, do the Software Updates, then reinstall Tiger, do the Software Updates, twice in the past two days. I also downwload the iPhoto updates from the Apple site, but they do not recognize the iPhoto 4 as valid to update from. I called AppleCare today and after several tries at various things, he asks me to do exactly as I have done twice already. I humor him and do it, of course it doesn't work.
When Tiger is loaded, I am still missing GarageBand, iDVD, iWork and the iCal icon is there but whe I open it is is not recognized. We had all of these apps working fine before it was sent in for service last week.
    Now the questions:
    1. There are 2 Software Install and Restore disks that came with our laptop, but it never asks for the second disk to be loaded--it only loads one disk. When I put in the second disk, it only has the Using this disk.pdf in several languages on it. Shouldn't it ask for the 2nd disk and is that probably where the Garage Band and iDVD are?
    2. Why would the install disks not reload all the applications as we had them orginally, or is this related to Question #1 and there is something wrong with those disks?
    2. I saved our entire hard drive to the external--did that not include the applications, therefore our iPhoto 5 is lost?
    4. Is there any recourse with AppleCare, in that I know to save my files but would expect they would return it with at least the same operating system as when I sent it in?
I know you are going to ask this: I have no idea how iPhoto was loaded onto our computer. I did not buy iLife 5 or 6 (iLife 4 came with our original laptop purchase), but one day I was loading pictures and it just appeared that way--I always assumed it came through as one of the Software Updates I run every night. But I know it was March 06, because the video I took in February would not load onto iPhoto (had to use the software that came with the camera), but the ones I took April 1st did load onto iPhoto. The only other way I thought was that AppleCare loaded it, but it was in for service in November 05 and mid-April 06, nowhere near the time I noticed it being on the laptop.
    Any advice?

    1. There are 2 Software Install and Restore disks

it ask for the 2nd disk and is that probably where
the Garage Band and iDVD are?
Often there are disks with software to be installed after OSX is installed. You don't use these disks during the install process, but after you boot OSX. Have you read the "Using this disk.pdf" file? If Garage Band and iDVD are on that disk they would be the versions shipped with the computer, not the most recent versions.
    2. Why would the install disks not reload all the
applications as we had them orginally, or is this
related to Question #1 and there is something wrong
    with those disks?
Some systems were shipped with two sets of disks, a restore set that restores everything that was shipped on the computer's hard drive, and an install set for just OSX. The OSX disk would be used for Disk Utility and password resetting.
    3. I saved our entire hard drive to the
external--did that not include the applications,
therefore our iPhoto 5 is lost?
It depends on how you did the save.
    4. Is there any recourse with AppleCare, in that I
know to save my files but would expect they would
return it with at least the same operating system as
    when I sent it in?
If they had to replace the hard drive, installing the operating system that was shipped with the computer is not unreasonable. Installing the latest version could cause problems for some customers with older software, and not all customers have paid for later versions

There are no free or automatic updates to newer versions of iLife. If your computer came with iLife 4 you have to buy iLife 6.

    Hi,
Just installed to Panther a few days ago and yesterday I downloaded the 10.4.3 upgrade and now nothing happens when I hit "reply" to a mail message. Also, if I hit "forward" or "compose" the proper window opens up but I can't type more than a few characters or delete what little I get to type.

  • URGENT PLEASE HELP - Can I install BOTH panther and tiger?

    Hi,
I recently upgraded to Tiger only now to find out that some software I use is only compatible with Panther. I really like the whole Tiger experience and am therefore very hesitant to switch back to Panther.
I understand that I might be able to somehow partition my hard drive so that I am able to run both Tiger and Panther (I have no idea how to even go about doing this...I'm a bit technically unsavy).
ANY help you may be able to offer is HIGHLY appreciated.
    Thanks guys (and gals)!

To partition your hard disk, restart your machine from a Mac OS X install disk and open the Disk Utility when you are able to. Select your hard disk in the list of disks, click Partition, and set up the partition structure. Confirm that you want to partition the hard disk; doing this will erase everything currently on the hard disk. You will need to create one partition for each version of Mac OS X that you want to run; a Mac OS X boot partition must be in either Mac OS Extended, Mac OS Extended (Journaled), or UNIX file system format. More information is available in this article.
