Panther for G3?

My iMac 600 has 40gb, my iBook 500 has 60gb. I use Photoshop 6, Word 98, Wancom Mozilla with OS 9.1. I bought both G3's in 2001, have got five years good use from both. In a way I'm still getting what I want.
But I'm curious if paying £60 or so on eBay or AppleRescue to install Panther would have any advantages within my usage. I'm a writer/ teacher using my Word a lot, occasionally iTunes which I know burns slower than it would on G4 but it's quick enough for me just now. I'm not interested in iChat, iPod etc In time I know the browser options on Os9 will become unusable, but all things pass, even OS X one day.
Is it worth my while to get Panther so as to use Safari, or would that slow up my usage of OS 9 apps (including printer) or would they work just as quick and well on Classic within Panther?
No sneers please from the "OS 9 is Flintstone Country" etc posters that I have seen on other forums. Just a straight answer would be much appreciated: if there would be serious advantaqes to me getting Panther now rather than wait till I have to buy a new computer in a year or so, I'd like to know.
Thanks.

That is a browser problem. Just make sure your son is using the latest browser version for OS 9.x. If his browser is outdated (like IE which is no longer supported), he will run into problems.
The following browsers are currently OS 9.x friendly:
Mozilla v1.3.1(Wamcom)
Netscape Browser Archive
Netscape v7.0.2
MacUpdate-NC v7.0.2
iCab v3
Opera v6.0.3
WannaBe (Text only browser)
Internet Explorer v5.1.7

I am still having a hard time finding my way around using Tiger. Like you, I miss the *old ways*.
I purchased The Missing Manual & The Dummy Book to help me out. I also took a 8 week Tiger course.
Huuuuuuuuuuuuuuge learning curve. If I get through this, mastering Chinese should be a breeze.

  • How to obtain copy of OSX 10.3 Panther for install  on Imac DV400

I have added 1 gig of RAM.This IMAC is running OS9. I was told to buy Panther OS 10.3 Panther as it is the best operating software for this older machine.
I was going to go to apple store education and buy it but all there appears to be for sale is Tiger? I thought Apple required upgrades to be per machine, a new copy of Panther for each machine. I have a full copy of Panther for my Desktop G5. This is for a student 1st grader. I need advice. Where can I buy this? I was at EBAy many times and was scarred off because I do not know much about macs and cannot tell if a seller is advertising something which is stolen, previously used and not for real. Please advise.

Thanks for your speedy reply. I ordered it. I still worry that it may not go from OS 9 to Panther. The whole 9.22 thing is confusing.
If I want to set up my Imac with all the software on OS9 for the first grader to play games efficiently would you recommend partitioning hard drive into one for OS9 and most for OS 10.3. I can then put on my Office apps, photoshop ect.
Is there any way to connect another monitor to imacs for video conferencing or better resolution. I have never seen an imac function with OSX so can only relate to the simple games in 256 colors I see when we use it to play games. Finally getting this rigged up on fast internet cable and with Panther is going to be great. Thanks again. Any advice appreciated.

  • How do I reset Panther for Apple setup

I have a G3 iMac that I no longer use and I want to give to a brother-in-law. So as to have a nice clean system I reformatted the hd and did a new install of Panther. To update the software I had to create an admin user and log on to use "software update". Now I want to remove the admin user and basicly reset it like it just came out of the box from Apple, but with all the software up-to-date. Is this possible?

    mac4ever:
Here is a short method and a long method posted by Kappy:
This is the simple method and doesn't involve erasing the hard drive.
Boot from your OS X Installer. After the installer loads select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (or Utilities menu if using Tiger.) After DU loads select your OS X volume from the list on the left, click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer. Now shutdown the computer for a couple of minutes and then restart normally.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior (3.0.3 for Tiger) and/or TechTool Pro (4.1.2 for Tiger) to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
    2. Next, boot to single user mode. Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND-S keys until the computer starts up to a black screen with white type.
    3. At the prompt, type the following commands, each command followed by the Return key:
    /sbin/fsck -yf
    mount -uw /
    rm /private/var/db/.AppleSetupDone
    shutdown -r now
The second-to-last command above will cause OS X to think that the operating system is newly installed, and when you reboot, it will send you through the Startup Wizard.
    This is the long method:
Follow these instructions step by step to prepare a Mac for sale:
    First, back up the data:
    1) Shut down all Virtual PCs. They cannot be in their "fast saved" state. They must be shut down from inside Windows.
    2) Clone to an external drive using Carbon Copy Cloner.
Next, prepare the machine for the new buyer:
    3) Deauthorize the computer in iTunes! Deauthorize both iTunes and Audible accounts.
    4) Remove Open Firmware passwords
    5) Turn the brightness full up and volume nearly so.
    Install a fresh OS:
    6) Insert the OS X install CD/DVD.
    7) Restart the computer while holding down the C key to boot from the CD/DVD.
    8) Run Disk Utility from the file menu and erase the internal hard drive (optionally zero all data).
    9) Install OS X.
    10) Reboot the computer.
    11) From the welcome screen, you can skip the registration step by typing command-Q.
    12) When prompted, create an account (it will be an admin account).
    13) From your new admin account, configure networking.
    14) Then use Software Update to bring your system and all of it's applications up to date.
    15) From Disk Utility, repair permissions on the new volume.
Now delete the account you just created:
    16) Boot from a different volume (e.g. a firewire drive, if available)
    17) Clean up the image using the following terminal commands:
    prompt> rm /Volumes/<imagevol>/var/db/BootCache.playlist
    prompt> rm /Volumes/<imagevol>/var/db/volinfo.database
    prompt> rm -r /Volumes/<imagevol>/var/vm/swap*
    18) Now you can get rid of the admin account you used to set up the machine Use the terminal:
    prompt> nicl -raw /Volumes/<imagevol>/var/db/netinfo/local.nidb -delete /users/<admin>
    prompt> rm -r /Volumes/<imagevol>/Users/<admin>
    prompt> rm /Volumes/<imagevol>/var/db/.AppleSetupDone
    19) Shut down and ship it to your buyer. When they get it, it will boot to the Welcome screen just like a factory Mac, except that it's better because it's completely up to date.
    With acknowledgements to Kappy
    Good luck.

  • End of life for panther

Does anyone know how long Panther is supported? I want to upgrade but need some business justification for ordering. Thanks

    Welcome to Discussions.
I see that you have 10.3.9. You are therefore familiar with the OS. As Kappy said, Apple will continue to support Users, although there will be no more updates. Panther is a fine OS, but obviously Tiger is the newest product, and has its merits. My guess is that there are many of us who will be using Panther for a while.
    Good luck.

  • Microsoft XBox 360 HD DVD drive and Panther/Tiger with USB 1?

Hi, I've looked everywhere for this information, but is it possible to connect my Microsoft XBox 360 HD DVD drive into my blue and white (which runs Tiger, but wondering if this'll work with Panther for another computer). I don't currently have my blue and white G3 to test it with... So, can I connect it to my blue and white and read JUST data CDs and DVDs under USB1.1? Is it bearable? Could I run a DVD game, or is it too slow? And yes, I do have a DVD Dual layer burning drive in my blue and white, but this is just a question for a computer I want to buy, which would run Panther.. And I do know I can't boot off of this, since it is USB...
    thank you...
    josephberte

According to a report posted here, someone connected an XBox 360's HD-DVD drive to a Mac's USB port and it was recognized. If you're intending to connect it to a Mac with PCI slots and running OS 10.2.8 or newer, you can and should install a USB 2.0 card. A card having an NEC controller chip will be more Mac-compatible than others. If you plan to connect it to a Mac without USB 2.0 upgrade capability, using the onboard USB 1.1 bus will be limiting. I've got an external Pioneer DVD±RW USB drive, but I've never tried connecting it to my B&W G3's onboard USB 1.1 port to read DVD data disks (I connect it to the USB 2.0 PCI card). Try it and see what happens - you can't damage anything. In addition to the Mac's CPU speed and graphics capabilities, playing a DVD game would require a faster bus than USB 1.1. Hopefully, you can install a USB 2.0 PCI card and enjoy optimal performance.

  • Integration of Panther Mail With Tiger Mail

After having several problems with Tiger when it first came out, I returned to Panther for the last several months. I wanted to give Tiger another whirl, so I reinstalled (erase and install) it on a second partition a couple of weeks ago. One problem that appeared immediately was that all my messages in Mail did not migrate over. I'm using the same user account, so I don't understand why all my messages did not migrate over properly. It appears that all recent messages appeared (probably because they were still on the email server). Some old messages from the last 3-5 years came through, but it seems that most of my older messages didn't.
I have one partition (Secondary) with Panther on it. I erased and installed Tiger on another partition (Primary). During the migration process when I first started up after installing Tiger, it asks you what items you want to migrate. I checked every box (can't recall specifically what they were). I believe the purpose of the migration process is to get you back up and running with the least amount of fuss when upgrading the system. In this case, it appears that every user defined setting/preference migrated OK with the exception of all my Mail messages (the mailboxes migrated successfully but not the messages themselves).
If I boot back up in Panther, all my older messages are still intact. So I'm confused why all my messages didn't migrate over since they are in my User's Library folder and should be essentially identical to how Mail appeared/acted in Panther (except I'm using a new version of Mail in an upgraded System). And despite the exact reason WHY this happened (helpful in preventing this from happening during my next upgrade), the more important queston is how do I get all my messages to appear in Tiger Mail (so that I can leave Panther behind permanently)? Obviously they are on my hard disk somewhere if Panther Mail can read them when starting up in Panther.

What does "I returned to Panther" mean here? What exactly did you do to "return to Panther" the first time you tried Tiger?

  • Best way to install Panther on Bondi Blue Rev B

The computer is my friend's free Bondi Blue Rev B which is currently running OS 9. I have a retail set of Panther discs and would like to update the OS to Panther for my friend.
The previous owner of the Bondi Blue has requested that her information be completely removed, so I am thinking about doing an Erase and Install.
We have the original system discs, OS 8.5 I believe, what appears to be a copy of an OS 9 disc, and a retail set of Panther discs.
Should I start with the OS 8 discs and then upgrade to Panther? Or should I start out with Panther? I am specifically wondering if I start out with Panther, if I can restore any other bundled software which originally came with the machine.
I gather that no version of iPhoto can be installed on this machine?
My friend will likely just use this computer for email. His other computer is a free iBook G3. Both computers have very elderly hard drives--originals I think--and for this reason I want him to be able to get email on the other computer if the hard drive fails on one of them. My friend is fairly new to computers and to Macs, so for the immediate future his computing needs will mostly be sending and receiving email. I don't think he has any real need for OS 9, but it may be that in the future, he may want to use other applications.
He does have an interest in emailing photos and adding any he receives to his iPhoto library. I assume the iBook will work best for this since it does have iPhoto 2.
Is there an alternate photo application on the Bondi Blue that would allow him to email photos and save any he receives to an iPhoto Library?
    Thanks in advance!

First, the iMac requires a firmware (Boot ROM version in System Profiler) update. Mac OS X: Available firmware updates
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=86117 The update must be installed (using OS 9) BEFORE you install OS X.
    Here's the *OS X 10.3 Panther Requirements*
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106163
When OS X is installed, it will be located in a folder titled System. OS 9 is currently installed in a folder titled System Folder. Both OSs are collocated & will not interfere with each other. You will be able to boot OS 9, boot Panther & run OS 9 applications in classic mode while booted in Panther.
     Cheers, Tom

  • Need suggestions for what order to install software on new computer

I have had an iMac (with Panther) for 3 1/2 years but have never made any major changes to it and plan to leave it as it is. We got a second computer yesterday, one of the last of the white iMacs, via an Apple reseller. It came with Tiger 10.4.6 installed with a Leopard 10.5 drop-in disc and an iLife 08 disk. I set up the new Mac so I have a web connection, but have not yet transferred any data from my back-up external hard-drive, nor have I attempted to install Leopard or iLife 08. I'm looking for recommendations for what order I should do these tasks. Or does it matter?
That is, should I play around with Tiger for awhile (I've never used Tiger before), move all my data and confirm all is OK before adding Leopard?
Or should I get Leopard on the computer right as the next step?
Should iLife 08 be installed before or after Leopard? or is either order OK?
Any suggestions that would be helpful to me?

I concur with the others on going straight to Leopard. Then resolve any issues before installing non-Apple applications (or older Apple ones, for that matter).
However, make sure ANY applications are Leopard-compatible before you install them.
And note that the iLife '08 installer is for a 30-day trial installation (fully functional for those 30 days) after which it needs to be purchased.

  • Need 3 suggestions on upgrading a G3 to Panther

I'm upgrading my mothers old G3 350mhz iMac to Panther. I need 3 suggestions please. Please keep in mind that she does basic things like Mail & Browse the net - nothing intensive.
    1) She has 192 megs of ram. I'm I correct to assume it has 2 slots and probably one has 64 and a 128 ram chip in it. I'm guessing I could ditch the 64 chip and add a 256 or 512 in that slot and it would suffice for her needs?
    2) She'll need a larger internal HD. I like Seagate. What type of HD does this take? I ordered from Egghead.com last time and was pleased, could someone please tell me which Seagates (either an 80 gig or larger) that they sell that would suffice for her. By the way, what's the max. HD it can take (like my cube, 125 gigs?)
    3) Anyone that has a reputable link to a vendor that can sell me a copy of OS X Panther would be much appreciated.
By the way, she was hoping I could pull this off for around $150, but I'm wondering if it will take more like $200.

Newegg.com is exactly where I just ordered a new HD for it. In fact, I ordered the same exact HD for it that I put in my Cube a month ago, which is a 120 gig Seagate (hope it worx & is compatible). I was going to get an 80 gig, but for just 12$ more I got the 120 gig so it seemed like a no brainer. I'm guessing this iMac also has the 125 gig limitation as the cube, so I didn't go beyond 120 gigs.
Ordered 512 megs of ram from OWC and also I ordered the retail Panther CD's from OWC. Panther cost a little more than the ram, but after racking my brain on eBay looking at the Panther computer specific cd's (for example, Panther for eMac, Panther for Powerbook, etc...) I just decided to get the Universal CD which should be guaranteed to work. OWC also guarantees it for 90 days, so I feel confident about the purchase.
The idea of buying a $30 iMac 400mhz firewire motherboard off of eBay has intrigued me, but at this point I don't want to do that much surgery on the unit - that can be a future upgrade if needed.
Mom will be mostly using Safari, Mail, and dabbling with digital photos from time to time (just saving them and viewing them, no intensive post processing). I think these upgrades will suffice her for atleast 2 more years (I hope).
My one concern is that she is using Netflix now and asked me if she'll be able to preview the Media Player movie trailers there (she can't now as her media player for os 9.1 just doesn't seem to play many of the trailers). I'm concerned here because I read where media player 9's recommended speed is somewhere in the range of a 450mhz G3. Anyone know if it will still work at 350mhz speed with the upgrades I'll be making?

  • Cannot reinstall Panther OS

I am trying to do an erase and install.
I boot the system and put in the OS disk
I back up whatever needs to be.
I start the OS install and a windows comes up asking to restart. I do so and another window comes up asking for permission. I click ok.
The system restarts and goes right back to the desktop. Over and over.
Troubleshooting I have tried so far:
    Repaired drive permissions.
    Tried someones elses Panther
For the **** of it, tried someone elses Tiger
Same result for everything. System just reboots back to desktop.
I am an Apple newbie, so I may be doing something wrong.

    Hi Punisher2006!
As per the specs in This Topic, you were running Tiger 10.4.7.
Is there a specific reason that you ae now reinstalling Panther 10.3.x?
Just to verify, you have already done a backup, and you have erased the HD, correct?
After you have the CD/DVD inserted, when you restart, are you holding down on the C key, until the restart is complete?

  • Using Suitcase Fusion/Advice for a Designer

For the longest time, I would just add whatever fonts I could find to Fusion and the program would add them without any problem. However, now that I am doing more freelance, I need to be really careful with what fonts I use for my clients. I wouldn't want to use unlicenced fonts for a job. Consequently, I now need to think up the best workflow for using fusion for freelancing. I know I can add temporar fonts to fusion. But what if I am doing a job for a month for someone. Would you then add the fonts permanently? Then after the job is over would you remove them? What would be the best way to remove the fonts? How could you be sure you aren't removing the wrong fonts? For example, what if a client sends you a Helvetica to use, and it happens to be exact same Helvetica that you own, and is consequently already in Fusion. I imagine Fusion would not allow that other Helvetica into the database since it is already in there. My problem is, when you are done with the job and you go to delete all the fonts because you no longer need them, wouldn't you end up deleting out your own helvetica? Any advice on the best workflow would be much appreciated.

    Hi kpdesigns,
The main thing to remember is that your fonts are never part of Suitcase. Everything listed in the active font lists are symbolic links only. If you "remove" fonts from Suitcase, you are only deactivating them. The originals are still wherever they were originally on the hard drive.
It's a bit different if you're using Fusion's option to put activated fonts in the vault. Those are then a copy of the fonts you activated stored in Suitcase's own database. Unless, in a sudden burst of insanity, turned on the option to delete the originals after adding fonts to the vault. When you deactivate them, they remain in the vault so you can go to the Closed Fonts panel and reopen them without having the originals on hand.
There are problems with that workflow though. What if you need to open a modified copy of Helvetica? Will Suitcase allow you to override the font in the vault. Will it even let you add it since they're the same name? To me, the vault isn't very useful and so that option is always off on my Macs. It's also downright dangerous if you're silly enough to let it delete your originals when adding fonts.
Here's the workflow we used to best effect in the prepress shops I've worked at.
    1) Keep your open fonts to the bare minimum on your Mac so client fonts you activate are unlikely to already be open from another font with the same name. See my article, Font Management in Mac OS X Tiger and Panther for a list of minimum fonts.
    2) Keep client fonts with each job they are for. Create a folder for a job when it comes in. Within that folder, create a folder for the fonts that belong with that job. So if the job folder is called Florida Spa Flyer, name the folder within for the fonts Florida Spa Fonts to make the association easy to remember. Once you have all of the fonts for that job in the Fonts folder, drag and drop it into the Suitcase window. A new font set will be created with the same name as the folder the fonts are in, making is easy to see which fonts belong with which job.
    3) Since fonts in Suitcase are only links, you can have multiple sets for all of your separate projects. Just activate whichever set matches the job you're currently on and deactivate the other sets. That way you can have multiple versions of Helvetica, Garamond or whatever in Suitcase. Since they're all separated by sets that activate only from the job folder you added them from, you'll always be using the correct fonts supplied by the client for that job.
    4) When you're done with a project, simply deactivate and delete that set from Suitcase. The actual fonts will remain where they are and can be archived with the final documents so they stay together.

  • How to upgrade G3 iMac to 10.3 Panther?

I have an old Blueberry iMac running OS 9.2.1 that I would like to upgrade to Panther for the kids. It has 350mhz processor, 192meg ram, 40gig hard drive, a cd-rom only drive and firmware version 4.1.9. From what I understand I need retail panther install disks (my eMac restore disks not only won't do the job, is is illegal to do so) and I need an external DVD drive since my Blueberry is cd-rom only. My main concern is cost. I don't mind buying the Panther retail disks on ebay but I really have no other need for the external dvd drive. So my main questions are:
    1. Are the 10.3 Panther disks available on cd-rom or are they DVD only?
    2. If I buy the DVD install disks is there an alternative to buying an external DVD drive (such as installing over a local network from my eMac, or copying the installer to a cd-rom disk?)
Thank you so much for any advice can give
    dugwim

Hi dugwim! And Welcome To Discussions!
    1. The Full Retail Version, of the Panther Install CDs, are on CD.
    2. Therefore, you don't need a DVD drive.
a Full Retail Version, of the Panther Install CDs, or a Full Retail Version of the Tiger Install DVD, can be purchased rather inexpensively, at some online Apple retailers, Amazon, eBay, AppleRescue, etc.
Be sure not to purchase grey, upgrade or machine specific CDs or DVDs.
Panther is only on CDs, not DVDs.
More info here Tip: Using OS X Install CDs/DVDs On Multiple Macs
Once Panther 10.3.x is installed, you can use the 10.3.9 Combo Update, to upgrade to the final version.
If your Mac meets the System Requirements for Tiger, you could also consider installing that.
And then use the 10.4.7 Combo Update.
You'll find System Requirements in these links:
    Panther
    Tiger
    Additionally,
"Tiger ships on a DVD, but if your Mac doesn’t have a built-in DVD-ROM player, you’ll need CD media. When you buy Mac OS X Tiger, you qualify to purchase Tiger CDs for only $9.95."

  • Best imovie version for a G3?

My G3 is a 350 Mhz blue and white with a 250 GIG hard drive and 768 MB RAM. Which version of imovie would work best with this G3?
I will also need to choose an operating system for this computer as well as imovie.
Which version of imovie should I be considering for this G3?
    imovie1
    imovie2
    imovie3
    imovie4
    imovie5
imovieHD (I'm not sure if my G3 can even run imovieHD)?
and which OS for this recommended version of imovie?
I would like to keep my budget to a minimum and so I am not considering Tiger 10.4. Instead I am considering Panther. Does imovie come with Panther? Where could I buy imovie and Panther for my G3?
I would like to be able to make short quicktime movies and maybe edit my DV footage. It would also be nice if I could create a DVD however I don't think that is possible with my G3 because iDVD doesn't run on a G3. I will be considering adding a pioneer 110 DVD writer. How can I create a DVD from this G3? I could use toast 7 however I would rather look for an open source solution if there is one to reduce my budget. How about ffmpegX?
Basically, I am trying to push my G3 to its limit before I move on an buy another computer.
    Thank you,

    Thanks Thomas,
I am not planning on much video work - if any at all actually. I am coming to terms with the fact that this computer is at the end of its life. I was just asking how far I can take this G3 in terms of imovie but mostly in terms of choosing an appropriate OS for this computer - it will most likely be its last OS
If it can't burn DVDs that's fine and I will accept that - I just do not want to spend any more cost. You see, I will be buying an intel mac when they come out soon and then I will be re-designating this G3 as the family computer.
I considered a G4 a few days ago and they all seemed to be fairly expensive - $400 or so or even more. I will reconsider this however now that you mentioned it. Thanks. Basically, I do not want to spend much on upgrading it. Maybe just an OS.
    Thanks Thomas.
This still leaves the question: What is the best imovie version for a G3?

  • Will G4 Dual 450 run Panther?

Panther needs 867. I figure Dual 450=900, But am I right? I have plenty of memory and spare hard drive space.
I am running 10.3.9 and would like to upgrade if I can.
    Thanks.

    Ummm...
10.3 = Panther. Panther will work on G3s and G4s with built-in USB and no built-in SCSI (PCI SCSI cards don't count). Your G4/450 should work. Exceptions on G4s are ones released with 10.4 or newer:

10.4 = Tiger. Tiger will work on G3s with built-in Firewire. All G4s have built-in Firewire, so they work with Tiger.
10.5 = Leopard. Leopard is the one with the 867 Mhz G4 requirement.
Are you thinking about getting Panther for your G4 or Leopard?
Cause if it is Leopard, no it won't work on your G4.
