Panther Installation Trouble

Okay, so I've got a PowerBook G4 that I just installed two 1GB chips of KByte DDR RAM into. It was working fine, but I wanted to install a fresh copy of the OS. Booted to CD, started to do the install, and it froze during the install. Held the power key and restarted, and every time I go to do the install, it either freezes or gives me the shaded screen that tells me to restart the computer. Everything was working fine before the attempt to restore. Any ideas?

Cornelius,
It's the 1.3Ghz PowerBook G4 with a new Western Digital 120GB HDD in it. I installed the drive when I got the unit and then installed Panther. It recognized the RAM yesterday when I put the new RAM in it, so I don't think that is the problem but it could be. I always make sure that the RAM works after an install. System profiler showed it as it should have prior to attempting the re-installation.
It's a full version of Panther. Same set of disks that I used to install the OS when I got the PowerBook four months ago. I am considering using Target Disk Mode to attempt the OS install or maybe putting the old 512MB chip back in to try that as well. I'm not sure which direction to go with it yet. I have also already tried using an external Lacie firewire drive to do the install, thinking that maybe the internal drive was having an issue, but came up with the same results.
Also, while I'm at it, any ideas how to fix a broken keyboard cable clip? The cable has nothing to secure it into the slot now. It was weak and I grazed it with the memory chip during install.

Hello, and welcome to Apple Support Discussions!
Having noticed you've posted the same question twice, once here, as well as
    here: http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=10875742#
that gives people two chances to see if they can get it right.
Sometimes, issues such as remaining hard disk drive free space may come
into play when trying to install extra systems, update or more apps in a HDD,
that may be part of the problem in this instance. A 10GB HDD is not adequate.
    Sure, I had an early white iBook 12" 500MHz with 576MB RAM & 10GB HDD;
for a time, it ran OK with OS 9.2.2 & Panther 10.3.9. (The OS 9.2.2 ran great.)
A lack of free space in the drive, and OS X demands for RAM along with its
automatic need to create Virtual Memory in hard drive free-space, made it run
a bit slow. A later cleaned up installation of Panther 10.3.9 without OS 9.2.2
did better; the working system plus some additional applications took 6GB.
A decent sized hard disk drive of at least 40GB capacity, and sufficient chip
RAM of as much as that computer's specifications indicate it can handle,
are both recommendations prior to an upgrade to an OS X version.
Hard disk drive format for OS X should be HFS+, not just HFS, for Panther.
The journaling should be turned on for Panther. In some cases, to do OS X
right, a new installation may be required; due to space and format issues.
To set up the hard disk drive using the booted OS X Installer's version of
Disk Utility, is the method to assure the hard drive is setup correctly; but that
would erase the content of the hard disk drive.
If the formatting is correct and there is enough free space on the drive to
initiate and complete the install, then maybe it could work without a full
new installation on an erased (disk utility option, overwrite zeros/reformat)
for awhile, at least. That old of a hard disk drive is likely at the end of service.
Presupposing the OS X 10.3.x install disc set is not from any other computer,
and knowing it should be a retail full install disc and not an upgrade-only set,
do you have the version number and information off the Panther installer discs
to share here, in case there is a discrepancy in this matter?
There are several reasons why it won't go past a certain point in the process of
installation. If there is a problem on the low-level of the hard disk drive, maybe
a sector error or damage, then the drive would need to be repaired; this may
also include the steps outlined generally above; where the drive would be wiped
and overwritten with zeros, reformatted, and so on, and be sure OS 9 Drivers
were installed if you start out with OS X install disc first, otherwise OS9 won't boot.
Some of the older computers do so well with OS 9.2.2, since it really does a lot
with very little resources; while OS X demands much more, including top quality
RAM and plenty of hard disk drive free space. The old ATA-2 HDD hardware
and a ceiling of only 512MB RAM limits that this can do.
You could probably see if the booted OS X installer's Disk Utility (accessed from
drop-down menu bar in Installer header) can use its Disk First Aid, to Repair Disk.
Could be something minor. However, now that some extra stuff is on that hard disk
drive, you should check and see how much remaining free space remains there.
This is critical and could compromise the entire operation as well as the OS 9 run.
    Good luck & happy computing!

  • Major installation trouble, can't login etc

    Hi, I am a nerd.
I went through installation trouble with scsi, formating of discs and partitions, and now that I have done it and do a first reboot, I feel ashamed that I can't log in.
I was so lucky to have the partitions and the aother stuff done, that I have forgotten to create a user ore change root password. Therefore, I can't login with whatever.
Please don't tell me all the work was done for nothing, and give me a hint how I can login, and what are the superusers defaults. And, btw, very merry christmas, and thanks.

  • Panther: Installation on Maxtor OneTouch II 300GB External Fire Wire Drive.

I am waiting on delivery of a Full Retail Version Panther 10.3 purchased on eBay to be installed on a Maxtor OneTouch II 300GB External FireWire drive.
Are these the steps I should take to format, partition, & properly install Panther on the external FW Drive?
I have updated my OS 9.2.2 with the latest Firmware Update Pbook 4.1.8.smi.
    1. Boot (Panther) from the install disk holding down the C key.
    2. Once booted go to the Installer Menu and open Disk Utility from Panther.
    3. In Disk Utility select FireWire HD in left panel and Erase in main panel.
    4. Be sure Volume Format is Mac OS Extended and the checkbox Mac OS 9 Drivers Installed is checked.
    5. Select Options at bottom left in Erase panel. This procedure will erase the contents of the entire External Fire Wire HDD. Select option to zero all data.
    6. Click OK. Click Erase.
*. After eFWD is erased. Is this when I will partition eFW Drive? I plan five (5) partitions: 1-10GB for back up of my internal HD, 1-20GB for OSX 10.3, 1-50GB for future OS, 1-100GB for Storage and the remainder GB for Storage.
    *. After eFWD is partitioned.
    7. Quit Disk Utility and open the Installer.
    8. Choose the option to Clean Install on Partition for OSX 10.3.
    9. Customize and deselect Foreign Language Translations and Additional Printer Drivers to save Hard Drive space.
    10. Proceed with installation on Partition for OSX 10.3.
    11. After installation is complete computer will restart. Follow prompts and set up computer.
    12. Open Disk Utility (Applications > Utilities > Disk Utility) and Repair Permissions.
    13. Go online and download updates, or go to Software Update under the Apple Menu and update your OS.
14.???Transfer your User Folder from Previous Systems folder. I don’t see a User Folder in my present System Folder of OS9.2.2.
    15. Install on the Panther partition; MSOffice, Quicken, and TurboTax.
    16. Copy or Clone to the OS 9 partition my existing internal hard drive.
I hope all that is left is to enjoy.

Thank you for the correction and encouragement. I have changed the erase step to partition. This will be my first experience with partitioning and with OSX. After three weeks of research and discussion I am excited about using OSX and probably will change my strategy to doubling my internal HDD to 20MB, increase RAM to 512MB and install the Panther on the internal drive. If this is my goal, which OS should be put on the external FW drive first, if I want to boot OS 9 from the eFWd instead of the internal? I don’t know if Panther will open archived files produced with OS9 applications? That being the only need to have a working version of OS9. Thanks again for all the help from the discussion groups.

  • Installation troubles on Oracle 10g

I got an error message when installing Oracle 10g: Failure initializating OCR.
That was not a problem to finish the installation, but after that I noticed that the OracleCSService service (C:\oracle\product\10.1.0\db_1\bin\ocssd.exe service) was not initialized and I cannot do it in anyway.
I don't know if this is the reason of another trouble: I can't create a database, the system notifies me:
ORA-28547: Connection to the server failed; possible admin NET8 error.
I can't creat a Net service too. Anybody knows what is that? What can be the reason for the service not to start ? What could be wrong with NET8?
    Thanks in advance.

    Hi,
    You installed the product
You have set the environment variables
    Now,
How are you trying to connect?
    Have you created a database?
Have you configured the NET Services?

  • Photoshop CS5 installation trouble - ' Installer failed to initialize '

    Greetings,
Having trouble with a CS5 photoshop installation on my 4,1 2.5ghz 6gb RAM MBP.  Download goes fine, disc mounts to machine, but I get stuck on the ' Installer failed to initialize' page.  Downloaded the reccomended support advisor app, which cannot find a solution to my problem.
    The log reveals the error:
[FATAL] Setup - Unable to copy PDAppFlex.swf one level up.
Not sure where to go from here.  I've downloaded the dmg 2x, done numerous restarts, tried the cs5 cleanup tool, repair permissions....no dice.
I should mention  that I have a 48gb SSD with my OS (10.6.3) as well as a 200gb drive which has my user account on it, separate from the OS.  Not sure if this is part of the issue?
    Thanks in advance,
    Kyle

In order to test the utility perform the following steps -
Goto /Applications/Utilities and launch Terminal application. This will open a window and show you the command prompt like machine-name: user$. ditto is a command to copy files, so type ditto then drag a file to the terminal, and drag a folder to the terminal. This will create a command similar to -
    ditto /Users/username/Desktop/fileToCopy.txt /Users/username/Desktop/folder/
Now hit return to run the command. If the command succeedes you will not see any error on the terminal and the file (as fileToCopy.txt) will get copied to destination folder (as /Users/username/Desktop/folder/)
In case you see any error on the terminal or the file is not getting copied to the destination folder, 'ditto' might be corrupted.

Hi. Was almost htrough with installing all my applications under Windoes7, even my soundcard was responsding to MIDI..., and Windows 7 even got me the newest audio driver for the card.
BUT then I noticed i could not record any sound. I was prompted to reinstall the software.
When the installation process reched the point of installing the driver (of course, on the CD-ROM that one was older!), the whole system was frozen and I could only shut down. After that, Windows7 would not start anymore. No chance, no restoring an earlier point of installation (they were all gone).
Well, I made it all new, but now the device manager keeps telling me there is no Audio Device, but additionally a PCI problem.
When I tried to install the Soundblaster-software, the program quit "no Soundblaster Audigy 2 card in thie computer".
When I swichted back to Windows XP, I found the soundcard properly working.
So please can someone date me up?
    Please. Thanx.

  • Computer won't turn on after Panther installation

I installed Panther successfully on my iMac G5. After I hit "restart" the computer is stuck on gray and the wheel is turning but the computer never completely turns on. I have forced it shut and tried numerous times to restart the computer but it continues to do the same thing. Any suggestions on how to get the computer to start? Perhaps it won't start because the installation DVD is still in the computer. Is there some way to manually eject the DVD without the computer being turned on?

You may be right about the disk thing. Hold the mouse click down on startup, until the DVD is ejected.
If that fails, zap PRAM. Hold down optcnd+RP on startup, and listen for three bongs before you let go.

  • Panther Xserve Troubles

    Hello,
Strange behavior on our Panther 10.3.9 Xserve. All processor LEDs are fully illuminated, but only simple file sharing going on. Attempted to shut down and perform restart. Spinning gear would not stop, no normal shut down possible. Shut down holding down power key. Restarted after a few minutes, same LED problem. Attempted another normal shut down, would not shut down. Held down power key again. Restated again. Still has all LEDs illuminated. Users can access files from RAID without problems but this is not normal on the Xserve. Have upgrade media for 10.4 but afraid to do it without plan to revert back to 10.3.9 in case it presents more troubles.

I see this process also listed in the Activity Monitor utility window. I find it is perhaps the Server Monitor application. Using the Activity Monitor application I attempted to stop this process, quitting and also force quitting but it does not quit. I am not using the Server Monitor utility. Perhaps I need to shut down again and just wait out the spinning gear, perhaps if I wait long enough I can get a "proper" shutdown, the a formal what I refer to as a hard boot. (or restart)

  • Panther Installation Never Asks for Disc 2

I'm installing panther on a new hard drive for my iMac Rev A. The new one is 10gb seagate. panther worked fine with my old 4gb quantum fireball. i partitioned it to 7.9gb (8gb doesnt work) and started the installation. it finished, rebooted, and went to the original installation screen - didnt prompt for disc 2 at all. I checked the startup discs and it showed Macintosh HD and it started up with the folder and the ?. Then I went to the installation to choose the drive and I figured out theres something already on it because its using 1.6gb already, but I cant boot to it. Im really getting p.o.'d.

  • Perilous Pitfalls of Problematic Panther  installation! I want it to work.

Ok after waiting 2 weeks for a copy of Panther to show up (week of bidding over eBay plus week of waiting for it to show up), I try to install Panther onto my iMac G3 with 1GB of RAM 2 USB ports and it keeps choking around 45% of installation of base system part 1. The last time this morning I tried to install it before I had to leave for work, it installed up to about 50% then the progress bar completed and I was shown a solid blue screen with the swirling clock dial graphic. I thought that may have been the cue to install disc 2 so I force ejected disc 1 and loaded disc 2 but nothing happened so I reset it and turned it off.

  • Mac os X Panther Installer crashing

I have PowerMac G4 with an unknown processor speed. I had Ubuntu installed on it while I searched for mac os X to put on the thing. It has two eighty gigabyte hard drives in it. One has Ubuntu installed on it and the other has Windows xp, but windows wasn't installed for this particular computer. I put in the Panther install disc 1 and i get the grey apple with the spinner on it. Then i Get the mac os x installer. I get to the language selection and then the system locks up and won't let me click the Continue button or select a Language. I have searched the internet high and low but can't find any answers. Anybody know whats wrong?

    Hi AspireFly,
Welcome to the Apple Discussion forums!
10.3.x Full Retail Install disks should look like this:
It has two eighty gigabyte hard drives in it. One has Ubuntu installed on it and the other has Windows xp, but windows wasn't installed for this particular computer. I put in the Panther install disc 1 and i get the grey apple with the spinner on it. Then i Get the mac os x installer. I get to the language selection and then the system locks up and won't let me click the Continue button or select a Language
If you are indeed using full retail install disks, how are the drives formatted for the install of Mac OS X? You may also want to check to make sure the firmware was properly upgraded for the install of OSX if needed.
