Panther to tiger driver update question

If you were using the latest core audio driver for your audio interface on system 10.3.9, did changing over to Tiger require a driver update for your interface? I ask this cuz I own an orphaned Aardvark Q10 and as such will not be able to get further updates. Thanks y'all

SPCreative,
An Upgrade disc, is a disk that was provided by Apple, to consumers that purchased a new model of Mac, shortly before, or after, a new version of OS X Tiger 10.4.x, was released.
The new Mac would have had the older version Panther 10.3.x, pre-installed when manufactured.
The Upgrade disc Tiger 10.4.x, is Model Specific, for that particular Mac, and will only Update the existing system Panther 10.3.x.
It is not a full version of the OS X.
Therefore, the previous version of OS X, must be present.
The Full Retail Version, of the Tiger Install DVD, will install Tiger 10.4.x, regardless if a previous version Panther 10.3.x is present.
The discs must look exactly like the images in the above links, and not say Upgrade, CPU Drop-in DVD, or "This software is part of a hardware bundle purchase - not to be sold seperately." on them.
Additional info in these links.

This is the correct one Mac OS X 10.4.6 Tiger, (DVD) Retail at FastMac.
And at HardCore Mac.
Notice, both are more expensive, than The Apple Store (U.S.).

I just finished reading this question,

in the iBook G4 forum and am very curious myself if this could be a problem with the update. If someone knows why this is happening, would you please help the poor guy with two dead iBooks?
    Thanks,

I'm sorry, I didn't mean that the other member's question was solved, only my part in it. That must have been confusing. I should go back to mark it unsolved.
I subscribe to the iBook G4 forum and when this question came up, I looked through other forums to try to find an answer for him/her. The Tiger forum seemed like the logical place to post the question. It looks like the right person came to the rescue! Thanks. • T500 Video Driver Update Questions.

2242CTO, W7 Pro-64, Mobile Intel 4 Series Express Chipset with v8.15.10.1855 driver.  I have started to see what looks like display corruption while using Office Excel 2003. Restarting system appears to fix the corruption problem for a while but it eventually reappears after using Excel for a period of time.  Has anyone upgraded from this initial release of 7xd808ww.exe (21 Oct 2009) driver? What version did you upgrade to? TIA for you help.
    Bob Helms

No. My corruption involves toggling between 2 Excel spreadsheets. When it occurs the gridlines surrounding the active cell(s) are painted incorrectly on the display. In some cases I can toggle back and forth several times and the gridlines suddenly are painted correctly. I have also noticed my email client (Thunderbird) exhibiting a jerky motion while displaying my inbox. This only occurs after swapping into Thunderbird from another app. This jerky display happens very quickly and then disappears. My heavy Excel usage started only recently and the problem may have been here since I upgraded to W7 last December. Seeing that the driver has been updated I was hoping someone else my have already upgraded for whatever reasons and I was looking for feedback before I upgraded. Thanks.

  • Question about updating from panther to tiger

I'm getting ready to update my system from panther to tiger. I'm going to use archive and install to do it. My question is will have to reload logic pro 7.1.1 after I do this?
    Thanks,

prokeds, if you want your mail as it was do this:
On your backup navigate to your ~(yourhome)/library/mail (copy the whole folder) and replace the corresponding folder on your new system. (First drag your existing Mail folder to the desktop until you're sure you don't need it.)
Do the same with ~(yourhome)/library/preferences/com.apple.mail.plist * This is a very important file which contains all email account settings and general mail preferences.
When you relaunch Mail decline any prompts to "import".
EDIT: I didn't even realize these were the instructions I already gave to the OP. They should work for you, post back if they don't or if your issue is different.

  • Making Panther bootable firewire drive using a Tiger 10.4.4 iBook

I want to use original Panther installation disks to make a Panther OS on an external OWC firewire 30GB Travelstar harddrive.
My Tiger iBook doesn't seem to be able to start up with the Panther disks, and I can't figure out how to get Panther onto that drive. Final goal is to put that drive with Panther on it into a G3 iBook whose 30GB internal drive died.
    Suggestions appreciated.
    G4 iBook   Mac OS X (10.4.4)

    Hello,
Apple has their computers set up to prevent booting or installing a version of the Mac OS that is earlier than the version that the computer shipped with. This ensures that the version of the Mac OS you install is aware of the specific needs of your computer (how it's power management system and cooling system works, etc.).
This method prevents you from installing a version of the Mac OS that is even 1 revision older. So, if your computer came with 10.4.5, then you will not be able to use that computer to install 10.4.4.
So, you will have to use a computer that originally shipped with OS 10.3 or earlier to install Panther on that drive.
You need a machine which shipped with the exact same version of OS 10.3.x that you are trying to install or earlier.
Additionally, there are times when a version number is slightly different for each system. For example, say 10.3.5 was already out when your system was first introduced. But, then lets say that your system required some tweaking in the OS to support new design elements in your system. In this case, the version of 10.3.5 that came with your system would be a slightly newer build than the official 10.3.5 version. So, in that situation, you wouldn't be able to install from a retail set of 10.3.5 disks because that version is technically older than the version that came pre-installed on your computer (even though they are the same revision number).
You see, while us consumers use the revision numbers as distinguishers, Apple uses "Build" numbers.
The "Build" number reflects the exact version of the OS (with all changes accounted for - even software updates adjust the build number).
So, you need to be sure that the "Build" number that came with the system is older than the build number of the OS you are trying to install.
So, if your Panther disks are 10.3.5, then to be certain it will work, you will need a computer that shipped with 10.3.4 or earlier. A computer which shipped with 10.3.6 will not install from a set of 10.3.5 disks (even if they are being installed to an external drive). And, as explained above, a system which shipped with the same OS version number may not install it either.
So, you specifically need to look at the disks you have, and see which version of OS 10.3.x they are (somewhere between 10.3 or 10.3.0 and 10.3.9).
You then need to find a computer that originally shipped from the factory with that version of 10.3.x or older to install the software onto your external drive. And, preferably, it should be a system that shipped with at least one revision number prior to your disks.
Now, another issue, is that you specifically will need the OS 10.3 Retail box version to do this anyway. You will not be successful using the 10.3.x disks that came with a computer. You need the retail box version.
The disks that came with a computer are "keyed" to that computer. So, they can only be installed using that specific computer.
In the end, I think your best solution is to just install the hard drive into the iBook G3 that you intend to use it with, and use that computer to install OS 10.3.x from a set of retail box disks.
    I hope this helps.

  • Intalling Panther or Tiger on an imac G3

    Hello,
I have a Blueberry color Imac G3 which was made in spring of 2000. I recently bought a new ibook and want to upgrade the older mac as my sister is now using it. I asked this ? a long time back but am requesting any further help you can give. The imac has 640 of ram and the Hardrive is 30 gig. There's almost nothing taking up any HD space and almost all is available. This mac is mostly used to surf the net. I do however want to install either Panther or Tiger on this unit. The person who responded before said to use a retail version for a full install. Also, would either Panther or Tiger work on this mac?
Lastly, what does the install involve??
    Thanks very much
    1bookG4   Mac OS X (10.4.3)

    omshanti:
I am not familiar with your computer, but it should easily support Panther, maybe even Tiger. Here are the basic requirements:
    -Macintosh with a PowerPC G3, G4, or G5 processor
    -Built-in USB
-At least 128MB of physical RAM
-Built-in display or a display connected to an Apple-supplied video card supported by your computer
In terms of installation, here are some suggestions to Archive and install. If you choose to do a clean install see note below:
    Panther: Archive and Install
If you do not have a Full Retail Version you can get one on eBay relatively inexpensively.
If you have the right disks here is what you do.
    1. Warning: Although we will use Archive and Install there is always a risk something can go wrong. As a precaution back up your User Folder and any apps you can't afford to lose.
    2. Check to see if you have the latest Firmware Update: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=86117
    3. Boot from the install disk holding down the C key.
    4. Once booted go to the Installer Menu and open Disk Utility.
    5. Run Repair Disk. If there are problems, run it until no problems are reported. If it reports that it can't repair the problems you might need TechTool Pro or Disk Warrior.
    6. While still in Disk Utility run Repair Permissions.
    7. Quit Disk Utility and open the Installer.
    8. Choose the option to Archive and Install. This saves your data in a Previous Systems folder, which you can retrieve after installation.
    9. You might want to Customize and deselect Foreign Language Translations and Additional Printer Drivers to save Hard Drive space.
    10. Proceed with installation.
    11. After installation is complete computer will restart. Open Disk Utility (Applications > Utilities > Disk Utility) and Repair Permissions.
    NOTE (below):
    To do a clean install:
Follow steps 1 through 4 above.
    a. In Disk Utility select your HD in left panel and Erase in main panel.
    b. Be sure Volume Format is Mac OS Extended and the checkbox Mac OS 9 Drivers Installed is checked.
    c. Select Options at bottom left in Erase panel. (Note: This procedure will erase the contents of your entire HDD. Be sure you have anything you want saved backed up.Select option to zero all data. Click OK. Click Erase. This process may take a while, so this is a good time to take a walk or call your mother
    d. After HDD is erased resume at No. 7 above.
Post back with any questions or comments.
    Good luck.

  • Panther and Tiger and other issues

deep breath...this is going to be long and detailed, but I am hoping someone here can help me since AppleCare has not been able to figure it out and I am at a loss now. I have been in the iPhoto forum but apparently the problem is much larger than one app.
We have a iBookG4, purchased from a Mac Store in Sept. 2004. It has been to AppleCare 4 times for various problems and 2 hard drive crashes that we have had to do reinstalls ourselves here at home, the most recent repair this past week. When we got it back Wednesday, it only had Panther loaded--we had been running Tiger for over a year--frustrating, but OK, as I had the orginal Tiger disk so I re-installed it. Proceeded to hook up our external and began loading all the pics and music back on the laptop. It would not open our photos, saying we needed to use the newer version of iPhoto. We had been using iPhoto 5.0.4 since March 06. As I looked further Garage Band and iDVD were also missing completely, which we previously had, and I am sure there are others, I just noticed these two since I use them the most.
So I start all over: reinstall Panther, do the Software Updates, then reinstall Tiger, do the Software Updates, twice in the past two days. I also downwload the iPhoto updates from the Apple site, but they do not recognize the iPhoto 4 as valid to update from. I called AppleCare today and after several tries at various things, he asks me to do exactly as I have done twice already. I humor him and do it, of course it doesn't work.
When Tiger is loaded, I am still missing GarageBand, iDVD, iWork and the iCal icon is there but whe I open it is is not recognized. We had all of these apps working fine before it was sent in for service last week.
    Now the questions:
    1. There are 2 Software Install and Restore disks that came with our laptop, but it never asks for the second disk to be loaded--it only loads one disk. When I put in the second disk, it only has the Using this disk.pdf in several languages on it. Shouldn't it ask for the 2nd disk and is that probably where the Garage Band and iDVD are?
    2. Why would the install disks not reload all the applications as we had them orginally, or is this related to Question #1 and there is something wrong with those disks?
    2. I saved our entire hard drive to the external--did that not include the applications, therefore our iPhoto 5 is lost?
    4. Is there any recourse with AppleCare, in that I know to save my files but would expect they would return it with at least the same operating system as when I sent it in?
I know you are going to ask this: I have no idea how iPhoto was loaded onto our computer. I did not buy iLife 5 or 6 (iLife 4 came with our original laptop purchase), but one day I was loading pictures and it just appeared that way--I always assumed it came through as one of the Software Updates I run every night. But I know it was March 06, because the video I took in February would not load onto iPhoto (had to use the software that came with the camera), but the ones I took April 1st did load onto iPhoto. The only other way I thought was that AppleCare loaded it, but it was in for service in November 05 and mid-April 06, nowhere near the time I noticed it being on the laptop.
    Any advice?

Often there are disks with software to be installed after OSX is installed. You don't use these disks during the install process, but after you boot OSX. Have you read the "Using this disk.pdf" file? If Garage Band and iDVD are on that disk they would be the versions shipped with the computer, not the most recent versions.
    2. Why would the install disks not reload all the
applications as we had them orginally, or is this
related to Question #1 and there is something wrong
    with those disks?
Some systems were shipped with two sets of disks, a restore set that restores everything that was shipped on the computer's hard drive, and an install set for just OSX. The OSX disk would be used for Disk Utility and password resetting.
    3. I saved our entire hard drive to the
external--did that not include the applications,
therefore our iPhoto 5 is lost?
It depends on how you did the save.
    4. Is there any recourse with AppleCare, in that I
know to save my files but would expect they would
return it with at least the same operating system as
    when I sent it in?
If they had to replace the hard drive, installing the operating system that was shipped with the computer is not unreasonable. Installing the latest version could cause problems for some customers with older software, and not all customers have paid for later versions

There are no free or automatic updates to newer versions of iLife. If your computer came with iLife 4 you have to buy iLife 6.

  • Having problems upgrading from Panther to Tiger

    Hi there!
I'm new to this place, but very desperate to find answers. I have been trying to upgrade from panther to tiger for the past week and have gotten a mess. I have to restore my old panther system after a panic kernal while trying to install tiger. I have tried to upgrade, install and archive and erase and install tiger and the same keeps happening: after 30-30% installation of essentials, I get a "try installing again" message and immediately goes to a blank blue screen. I have to reboot from my eDisk on the external hd and re-install my old system. I've done EVERYTHING I can find on the web and in the install suggestions. Everything has been updated (firmware, sofware, etc.), I tired disconnecting external devices except the keyboard and the external dvd I need to install and still the same thing...over and over and over!
So, now I'm down to the fact that I need to install CDs (internal) instead of DVD off the external drive. However, when I went and downloaded the form for the exchange the Tiger versions listed (MA453Z/A, MA454Z/A) do not coincide with the version I purchased (M96397/A). So I'm trying to figure out what this version is that I purchased and if it has anything to do with my big install mess!
So, any ideas out there? Glad to hear your input!

Call 1-800-MY-APPLE WRT media exchange program and the DVD version you have.

  • IBook G3, thinking about upgrading from panther to tiger?

    Hello all
This is my first apple computer that I've owned, it's my mom's hand me down after she got herself a spanking new macbook pro but it actually runs decently fine, iBook G3 500Mhz, 40gb HD, 640mb memory
It currently runs a clean copy of panther 10.3.9, but with some effort, I think I could get my hands on tiger as well. However, before I do, would it be worth it to try to upgrade it on this laptop? I think panther runs fine, but I hear for each successive mac osx, it's been running faster, so in that case, I'd try to get it, but if I happen to find that it's about the same or worse, then maybe not worth the effort. I definitely like to be up to date with my software and such, so it would be nice if people with ibook G3's with specs similar to mine could tell me their experience going from panther to tiger.
    Thanks in advance

    Welcome To  Discussions daonesteven!
Here are images of the Full Retail Version, of the Tiger Install DVD, referred to by cornelius, that must be used.
If you know what to look for, those install discs, can be purchased rather inexpensively, at some online Apple retailers, Amazon, eBay, FastMac, etc.
The discs should look exactly like the images in the above links, and not say Upgrade, CPU Drop-in DVD, or "This software is part of a hardware bundle purchase - not to be sold seperately." on them.
As the Tiger Media Exchange Program is no longer being offered, if the iBook doesn’t have a built-in DVD-ROM player, you will have to use an alternative method of installation.
Info here Installing Tiger without a DVD drive.
Once Tiger 10.4.x is installed, you can use the PPC 10.4.10 Combo Update, to upgrade to the current version.
And additional RAM may speed the iBook up.

  • Be carefull when upgrading from Panther to Tiger

If you choose to upgrade from Panther to Tiger by using the Erase and install option on the Tiger DVD install disk, your XServe RAID won't mount. The problem seems to be that the driver for the RAID won't be updated in the process.
The solution for me was (by advice of Apple Support) to reinstall Panther. My RAID came up fine and I then did a upgrade to Tiger using the update and install.

Mattur:When I restart to install the OS, it goes into a Kernel Panic and tells me to restart.I take it to mean that you mean you put the install disk and open it and at the prompt you restart, and it goes into the kernel panic. I notice too that you sayI can reinstall Panther with the disk the computer came with , but I can't install Tiger..In other words there is a problem is with the Tiger disk.
Are you using a Full Retail Version of Tiger? Computer specific versions or update versions will not work.
If you are planning to install Tiger check out System Requirements to be sure your computer complies.
    Good luck.

  • Upgrading from 9.2.2 to either Panther or Tiger

I am needing to upgrade my iMac from OS 9.2.2 to either Panther or Tiger. I realize I need more memory, probably. I have 7GB available on my hard drive. Which would be best for me?

craftymac, with your 400 MHz G3 processor you are at the bare minimum for QuickTime 7 and below the minimum for iTunes 6 so you should probably not go beyond Panther 10.3.9 and if you don't have built-in FireWire that's another reason not to go to Tiger. It sounds like you have a slot-loader so you'll need to update the Firmware if you haven't already done so.

  • Not able to add driver update during Solaris 10 installation on IBM x3550

I am facing a problem with installation of Solaris 10 on IBM x3550.
My question is not specific to IBM server.
I am trying to add SAS driver during Solaris 10 installation. I selected option "Apply device driver update" (option # 4). It is asking to insert driver disk. But only showing floppy (f) and cdrom (c).
IBM server 3550 doesnt have floppy drive and I have the driver image only in a USB stick. Unfortunately, Solaris 10 installation is not showing usb device during driver installation.
Is there any way we can add usb device to the driver update disk list??
    Thanks in advance.

  • Printer doesn't work after Panther to Tiger upgrade

After upgrading from Panther to Tiger my usb connected Canon PIXMA iP5000 printer no longer works. In printer setup utility when I click "add" I see the ip5000 but the "Print Using" dialog box says "please select a driver or printer model". In the drop down list under Canon there is no driver listed that corresponds to my iP5000 (also, only gimp-print drivers are listed for some reason).
I reinstalled the printer software from the disk that came with the printer but still nothing relevant appears in the list under Canon. I installed a newer OSX driver from the Canon website but still nothing relevant (and still only the gimp-print drivers in the list under Canon).
Using the finder search function I located a file called ip5000.ppd on the hard drive. I selected this file in the "Print Using" dialog box and was then able to add the printer. When I try to print though nothing comes out of the printer.
I installed a driver from www.printfab.com for the iP5000. This works fine but apparently I have to buy a license for $61 to use the software?
Can anyone out there tell me what's going on? Why is the driver from the Canon web site not showing up under the Canon tab in the printer setup utility? Any idea where it is or what file extension it should have so I can search for it?
    Thanks,

    imac G5 PowerPC   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

In step 3, I moved the contents of the BJPrinters
folder to the desktop instead of deleting them
    (deleting is so final).
We need to delete and empty the trash. It seems that for some setups, leaving the files on the system (including the trash) interferes with the new driver installation/operation.
In step 4, the only file that seemed close to what
you mentioned was CanonPrinterDrivers.pkg. I moved
    it to the desktop also.
This is the original package included with the OS for the Canon BJ drivers we are deleting. In case you ever need to add an old Canon driver then it would be best to put this file back. But it is odd that there is no other Canon package. I expected there to be one for the iP5000 that you installed.
The result was the same as before - when I try to add
the printer the "Print Using" menu still shows a
greyed out "please select a driver of printer model".
The Canon folder still shows the same gimp-print
options, none of which are related to the iP5000.
Yes. The iP5000 won't appear in the list as it hasn't been written to do so. As I said before, the driver, upon detection of the printer, adds the printer to the list. You cannot browse to it.
Let me know if you have any other ideas (or if I need
to delete the files rather than just move them to the
    desktop).
So, I think you need to do the steps again, this time delete the contents of the CanonBJ folder and empty it from the trash. The thing I would add this time is turn off the iP5000 (unplug the power cord but leave the USB connected) at Step 6 (you may need to shutdown rather than restart the Mac). Then start the Mac, install the latest driver (which is v4.1.9) do the disk permissions and then, before you open the Printer Setup Utility, reconnect the power cord to the printer. Hopefully now the driver will detect the printer and add it to the list.
