PANTHER TO Tiger update discs?

Anyone know where I can get some Tiger update discs?
Our G4 needs Tiger and we currently have Panther. Evilbay is a little pricey for them at the moment.
We will Be getting a new G5 in a year or 2 with Leopard....for now I need to upgrade to Tiger any ideas?

SPCreative,
An Upgrade disc, is a disk that was provided by Apple, to consumers that purchased a new model of Mac, shortly before, or after, a new version of OS X Tiger 10.4.x, was released.
The new Mac would have had the older version Panther 10.3.x, pre-installed when manufactured.
The Upgrade disc Tiger 10.4.x, is Model Specific, for that particular Mac, and will only Update the existing system Panther 10.3.x.
It is not a full version of the OS X.
Therefore, the previous version of OS X, must be present.
The Full Retail Version, of the Tiger Install DVD, will install Tiger 10.4.x, regardless if a previous version Panther 10.3.x is present.
The discs must look exactly like the images in the above links, and not say Upgrade, CPU Drop-in DVD, or "This software is part of a hardware bundle purchase - not to be sold seperately." on them.

  • Question about updating from panther to tiger

I'm getting ready to update my system from panther to tiger. I'm going to use archive and install to do it. My question is will have to reload logic pro 7.1.1 after I do this?
    Thanks,
    Chuck Floyd

prokeds, if you want your mail as it was do this:
On your backup navigate to your ~(yourhome)/library/mail (copy the whole folder) and replace the corresponding folder on your new system. (First drag your existing Mail folder to the desktop until you're sure you don't need it.)
Do the same with ~(yourhome)/library/preferences/com.apple.mail.plist * This is a very important file which contains all email account settings and general mail preferences.
When you relaunch Mail decline any prompts to "import".
EDIT: I didn't even realize these were the instructions I already gave to the OP. They should work for you, post back if they don't or if your issue is different.

  • IBook G3, thinking about upgrading from panther to tiger?

    Hello all
This is my first apple computer that I've owned, it's my mom's hand me down after she got herself a spanking new macbook pro but it actually runs decently fine, iBook G3 500Mhz, 40gb HD, 640mb memory
It currently runs a clean copy of panther 10.3.9, but with some effort, I think I could get my hands on tiger as well. However, before I do, would it be worth it to try to upgrade it on this laptop? I think panther runs fine, but I hear for each successive mac osx, it's been running faster, so in that case, I'd try to get it, but if I happen to find that it's about the same or worse, then maybe not worth the effort. I definitely like to be up to date with my software and such, so it would be nice if people with ibook G3's with specs similar to mine could tell me their experience going from panther to tiger.
    Thanks in advance

Here are images of the Full Retail Version, of the Tiger Install DVD, referred to by cornelius, that must be used.
If you know what to look for, those install discs, can be purchased rather inexpensively, at some online Apple retailers, Amazon, eBay, FastMac, etc.
The discs should look exactly like the images in the above links, and not say Upgrade, CPU Drop-in DVD, or "This software is part of a hardware bundle purchase - not to be sold seperately." on them.
As the Tiger Media Exchange Program is no longer being offered, if the iBook doesn’t have a built-in DVD-ROM player, you will have to use an alternative method of installation.
Info here Installing Tiger without a DVD drive.
Once Tiger 10.4.x is installed, you can use the PPC 10.4.10 Combo Update, to upgrade to the current version.
And additional RAM may speed the iBook up.

  • Panther = OK, Tiger = Lots of freezes

    Hi,
I just did a clean fresh install of Tiger on my eMac. After the install I repaired disk permissions (no errors found). Restarted. Installed the 10.4.7 Combo Update (downloaded from Apple.com) and again did a restart. And repaired disk permissions again (no errors found).
    Software:
I installed the following software; Adium (www.adiumx.com), Quicksilver (quicksilver.blacktree.com) and Newsfire (www.newsfirerss.com). I'm running Mac OS X Tiger 10.4.7.
    Hardware:
I've attached an external firewire harddrive, an usb cardreader, the official apple keyboard and a microsoft usb mouse (plugged into the keyboard's usb hub thing). Also, I have an internet connection by using a network cable. In the past, with only the official apple keyboard + mouse I had the same problems so I don't think there's a problem with the above hardware. I've tried a different keyboard in the past too. And I tried all combinations with the 2 RAM modules (256 MB + 512 MB, both installed by a certified Apple Dealer). The problem occurs both with a disc inside the SuperDrive and without. I also tried not using the internal disk for a while but that didn't help either.
    The problem:
I get a lot of random freezes. For some hours everything works smoothly. But other times, one application freezes.. sometimes the Finder, sometimes Safari, other times Disk Utility, etc. When an application freezes (I get the spinning beach-ball) most of the time other applications will freeze too after I clicked them. Force Quitting applications doesn't work (well, maybe 5% of the time it does). Stuff only freezes when I actually click something, when there's interaction.
The weird thing is I almost had no problem when using Panther. I had my system checked by a certified Apple Dealer and they couldn't find a problem. (I had to run Panther at that time, which didn't crash that often)
Besides my freezes sometimes my SuperDrive will not open. Not by ejecting it in the Finder and not by using the Eject-button. I just tried Ejecting it in the Finder and the Finder froze.
I'm aware of an eMac repair program but it doesn't include my model. I do have some of the similar problems though. (my text gets scrambled too sometimes, both on Panther and Tiger). I tried the trick with removing some ATI files but that didn't help.
I've tried all the stuff like repairing disk permission, resetting firmware, resetting different kind of RAM's. But ofcourse I can try it again, just let me know which key combos I have to press .
Any help is greatly appreciated! If this forum allows it I can reward the working answer with some hours of webdesign/scripting work.
    Thanks for reading,
    Marc
    PS
My system froze twice when writing this post. Luckily I wrote it in TextEdit and saved often.

    Hi,
No need for apoligies. Double checking everything doesn't hurt.
About the three programs: they are all the latest version (all of them are updated regulary too). I don't think they are the problem because they are very popular and I haven't yet seen someone else having a problem with them. Indeed I don't use any other software, including menu bar add-ons or other stuff that may cause trouble.
I haven't yet tried starting up in Safe Mode. Since the problems only occur when I'm actually using the system I will try to only use the finder and if that doesn't crash anything I will start using the other bundled Apple software like Safari.
By the way, I've been installing DarwinPorts and some Ports too.. but they aren't causing the trouble because the problems were there before I installed it.
    About the logs:
I didn't really know what to look for so I uploaded everything:
    Finder.crash.log:
    http://rafb.net/paste/results/SSf9mA49.html
System.log (notice all the httpd/Apache2 crashes):
    http://rafb.net/paste/results/igu6cC81.html
Console.log.5 (notice the Finder crashes, they occured when trying to use Spotlight/Search):
    http://rafb.net/paste/results/sx9y4468.html
httpd.crash.log (more info on the httpd crashes):
    http://rafb.net/paste/results/lhJdGR17.html
    DirectoryService.error.log:
    http://rafb.net/paste/results/84lfry83.html
    System.log (system-wide, the other one is user-specific):
    http://rafb.net/paste/results/qp77r781.html
    Windowserver.log
    http://rafb.net/paste/results/2tSoAn47.html
I will let you know when I've got some results with Safe Mode.
    PS
If you haven't tried Quicksilver yet, I can recommend it. It's hard to describe what it is but you can move/copy/open/edit/etc stuff with a few clicks. Once you've tried it you'll never go back.

  • Intalling Panther or Tiger on an imac G3

    Hello,
I have a Blueberry color Imac G3 which was made in spring of 2000. I recently bought a new ibook and want to upgrade the older mac as my sister is now using it. I asked this ? a long time back but am requesting any further help you can give. The imac has 640 of ram and the Hardrive is 30 gig. There's almost nothing taking up any HD space and almost all is available. This mac is mostly used to surf the net. I do however want to install either Panther or Tiger on this unit. The person who responded before said to use a retail version for a full install. Also, would either Panther or Tiger work on this mac?
Lastly, what does the install involve??
    Thanks very much
    1bookG4   Mac OS X (10.4.3)

    omshanti:
I am not familiar with your computer, but it should easily support Panther, maybe even Tiger. Here are the basic requirements:
    -Macintosh with a PowerPC G3, G4, or G5 processor
    -Built-in USB
-At least 128MB of physical RAM
-Built-in display or a display connected to an Apple-supplied video card supported by your computer
In terms of installation, here are some suggestions to Archive and install. If you choose to do a clean install see note below:
    Panther: Archive and Install
If you do not have a Full Retail Version you can get one on eBay relatively inexpensively.
If you have the right disks here is what you do.
    1. Warning: Although we will use Archive and Install there is always a risk something can go wrong. As a precaution back up your User Folder and any apps you can't afford to lose.
    2. Check to see if you have the latest Firmware Update: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=86117
    3. Boot from the install disk holding down the C key.
    4. Once booted go to the Installer Menu and open Disk Utility.
    5. Run Repair Disk. If there are problems, run it until no problems are reported. If it reports that it can't repair the problems you might need TechTool Pro or Disk Warrior.
    6. While still in Disk Utility run Repair Permissions.
    7. Quit Disk Utility and open the Installer.
    8. Choose the option to Archive and Install. This saves your data in a Previous Systems folder, which you can retrieve after installation.
    9. You might want to Customize and deselect Foreign Language Translations and Additional Printer Drivers to save Hard Drive space.
    10. Proceed with installation.
    11. After installation is complete computer will restart. Open Disk Utility (Applications > Utilities > Disk Utility) and Repair Permissions.
    NOTE (below):
    To do a clean install:
Follow steps 1 through 4 above.
    a. In Disk Utility select your HD in left panel and Erase in main panel.
    b. Be sure Volume Format is Mac OS Extended and the checkbox Mac OS 9 Drivers Installed is checked.
    c. Select Options at bottom left in Erase panel. (Note: This procedure will erase the contents of your entire HDD. Be sure you have anything you want saved backed up.Select option to zero all data. Click OK. Click Erase. This process may take a while, so this is a good time to take a walk or call your mother
    d. After HDD is erased resume at No. 7 above.
Post back with any questions or comments.
    Good luck.

  • Panther or Tiger: which is better for iBook 600?

Hi, I will have my aunt's old iBook for maintenance here over the weekend, and I wondered if anyone has any comparative experience on Panther (10.3, currently installed) and Tiger (10.4) on a 600MHz iBook.
I know, I am lazy, but I don't look forward a long weekend of installs, tests, erase and re-installs... My PowerBook 12" certainly was happier with Tiger, but 600MHz is quite meager in comparison.
    Thanks for sharing your experience
    Amadeu

Advantages of Tiger - Spotlight's content search many find is a great tool, however, its downside is that it isn't as fast for simple file searching by name as Panther. Security updates are current. Many more applications and drivers are available now which require at least Tiger.
Depending on the level of experience of your aunt, introducing a new operating system on her may or may not be wise. Each time you install a new operating system you introduce a learning curve. Ask her what sort of learning curve she is willing to tolerate.

  • Can't print after Tiger update

I updated from Panther to Tiger 10.4 today, and then did an update to 10.4.6.
Now I can't print. Tried "Save to PDF" from the File>Print menu. Nothing. Tried clicking on the "print" button. Nothing.
The Apple knowledge base only says something about deleting a Xerox plugin, which I didn't have, so I couldn't do that.
Anyone know what's going on? Thanks!

Not unusual to have this problem if you had printers installed before upgrading. Open the Printer Setup app and select "Reset Printing System" from the File menu. Then reinstall your printers. If still no joy, you might want to check your printer's mfgr's website for new (10.4) drivers.

  • Why upgrade from Panther to Tiger on G4 iMac?

I have two iMacs. I use a G5 recently upgraded from Panther to Leopard 10.5.5. My wife has a G4 with Panther 10.3.9.
Now that I have Leopard I have a Tiger install license available.
Are there good reasons to upgrade my wife's G4 to Tiger?
She uses it heavily for e-mail, internet, and MS Word.
She's networked to my G5 through Airport and we use printer sharing and file sharing.
Her G4 works great, but I'm wondering about security issues.
    Comments?
    -Bob

Correct me if I'm wrong but I think Apple is still releasing Security updates for Panther too, isn't it?
I think some of the Panther software is starting to show its age limitations for Internet capabilities, and things like iTunes for all the new iPods, etc. On one hand if you're not actually having problems then my feeling is an old computer best runs software designed for it. On the other hand I am not sure you would lose any functionality if you did upgrade. I think most Panther applications run on Tiger, the system requirements are pretty similar. It's not like when you upgrade to Leopard that you suddenly lose Classic support and it requires (demands?) a faster processor. From my personal perspective upgrading to Leopard really makes a big difference in capabilities both ways and may even be a negative upgrade if you run old software the way I do. Upgrading from Panther to Tiger didn't have any downsides and had several upsides in terms of software is still being brought out for Tiger.

  • G5 killed by mail when upgrading from Panther to Tiger...HELP!

    Hello,
I just upgraded one of our G5s from Panther to Tiger. When I opened mail, it began "importing" all the messages (I assume because of the update to mail.app). Now, the user who's computer I upgraded contained 9GB of mail (!!!) but the G5 had more than enough space for this. When the "importing" completes, mail.app is open and all folders/subfolders, etc. are there, but the program doesn't contain any of the messages from the import. Every folder/subfolder is empty, the inbox is empty, etc. AND, to top it off, the HD of the G5 now has zero free space (while, when before the import, it had at least 40GB of free space). Does anyone know a fix for this? Has this happened before?
    Regards,
    Kristin.

OPEN LETTER TO THE MAIL 2.0 CODING TEAM. RSVP.
with thanks to DAVID GIMENO GOST, for answering so many people's posts about all the mail 2.0 bugs.
    hi guys,
i love all things apple, and i have done for twenty years.
but with respect, your build of mail 2.0 really could be a lot better.
moving my mail from 1.0 on an ibook g3 running os X 10.3.9, over to mail 2.0 on an intel macbook 1.83 running os X 10.4.7 has been a nightmare.
the discussion boards of many mac sites feature countless cases of people making the move from 1.0 to 2.0, with all their e-mails disappearing.
having spent two weeks reading the knowledge forums, and learning about emailchemy, plus all the complications which, even with that third party program, still exist in moving one's mail over from version 1.0 over to 2.0, are both massive and horrendous.
and that's for me, who has twenty years of finding my way around mac bugs.
but this one is the most difficult i've ever seen, as well as being one of the most widespread problems in a FULL VERSION RELEASE of an apple program, which apple has done nothing to resolve during the six months in which this problem has been widespread in the mac community worldwide.
so thank god for DAVID GIMENO GOST !
i'm amazed that apple still hasn't come up with a patch for moving mail from 1.0 to 2.0.
even now, while i've finally got all my mail back today, 95% is showing as unread, due to the last obstacles in the process, which i can no longer face solving.
i've also lost hundreds of red mail flags during the transfer :o(.
    PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE, guys:
we shouldn't need to be buying third party software to move our e-mails from apple mail 1.0 up to apple mail 2.0, and even then be faced by massive hurdles to overcome, which take weeks for someone who at least has SOME idea of what he's doing.
i pity all the people who read the numerous forum posts about how difficult it is to transfer their mail from 1.0 to 2.0, and simply give up on the spot, and have to start their e-mail history TODAY, unable to access their previous e-mail again - potentially now for ever.
because the ironic joke is that we can't even have an access copy of mail 1.0 on our macs to read our old e-mails, unless we hack that program out of the 10.3 cd installation set, which the gurus on your own web site recommend us NOT to do !
so what are we supposed to do, to access our old e-mail, which we can't open, even though YES, it is in our mail folder, and YES, we did full rebuilds of every mail folder, and YES, we trashed our mail preferences first.
e-mail is now at the very center of the average mac user's digital life.
a user's most important program should not require countless hours scrolling through the astonishing number of problems within mail 2.0, which the apple.com discussion boards evidence, with new problems being added every day.
please sort this out, and build a patch, for the sanity of the many people who love apple, but who are unable to access any of their old e-mails.
because i wouldn't wish the last fortnight on anyone else.
    RSVP, APPLE.
with best wishes to everyone on the infinity loop,

ps: if you're a mac user who has been affected by the mail 2.0 disappearing bug, please post a reply to this message, and send me an e-mail to: [email protected], so that we can draw apple's increasing attention to it. thanks.

  • Upgrading from Panther to Tiger. Is it worth it?

Hi there. I have been debating this in my head for quite some time. It is worth upgrading from Panther to Tiger? What are the benefits?
    Thanks,
    dave

    Hi dave!
If you do decide to upgrade, Tiger is available for purchase at The Apple Store (US).
Jaguar and Panther, are no longer available directly from the Apple Online Store, as Tiger 10.4.x is the most up to date OS.
A Full Retail Version of the Tiger Install DVD, can be purchased rather inexpensively, at some online Apple retailers, Amazon, eBay, AppleRescue, (as cornelius mentioned) etc.
Be sure not to purchase grey, upgrade or machine specific CDs or DVDs.

  • Having problems upgrading from Panther to Tiger

    Hi there!
I'm new to this place, but very desperate to find answers. I have been trying to upgrade from panther to tiger for the past week and have gotten a mess. I have to restore my old panther system after a panic kernal while trying to install tiger. I have tried to upgrade, install and archive and erase and install tiger and the same keeps happening: after 30-30% installation of essentials, I get a "try installing again" message and immediately goes to a blank blue screen. I have to reboot from my eDisk on the external hd and re-install my old system. I've done EVERYTHING I can find on the web and in the install suggestions. Everything has been updated (firmware, sofware, etc.), I tired disconnecting external devices except the keyboard and the external dvd I need to install and still the same thing...over and over and over!
So, now I'm down to the fact that I need to install CDs (internal) instead of DVD off the external drive. However, when I went and downloaded the form for the exchange the Tiger versions listed (MA453Z/A, MA454Z/A) do not coincide with the version I purchased (M96397/A). So I'm trying to figure out what this version is that I purchased and if it has anything to do with my big install mess!
So, any ideas out there? Glad to hear your input!

Call 1-800-MY-APPLE WRT media exchange program and the DVD version you have.

  • Be carefull when upgrading from Panther to Tiger

If you choose to upgrade from Panther to Tiger by using the Erase and install option on the Tiger DVD install disk, your XServe RAID won't mount. The problem seems to be that the driver for the RAID won't be updated in the process.
The solution for me was (by advice of Apple Support) to reinstall Panther. My RAID came up fine and I then did a upgrade to Tiger using the update and install.

Mattur:When I restart to install the OS, it goes into a Kernel Panic and tells me to restart.I take it to mean that you mean you put the install disk and open it and at the prompt you restart, and it goes into the kernel panic. I notice too that you sayI can reinstall Panther with the disk the computer came with , but I can't install Tiger..In other words there is a problem is with the Tiger disk.
Are you using a Full Retail Version of Tiger? Computer specific versions or update versions will not work.
If you are planning to install Tiger check out System Requirements to be sure your computer complies.
    Good luck.

  • Upgrading from 9.2.2 to either Panther or Tiger

I am needing to upgrade my iMac from OS 9.2.2 to either Panther or Tiger. I realize I need more memory, probably. I have 7GB available on my hard drive. Which would be best for me?

craftymac, with your 400 MHz G3 processor you are at the bare minimum for QuickTime 7 and below the minimum for iTunes 6 so you should probably not go beyond Panther 10.3.9 and if you don't have built-in FireWire that's another reason not to go to Tiger. It sounds like you have a slot-loader so you'll need to update the Firmware if you haven't already done so.

  • Tiger update conflict

Yesterday I had to clean reinstall on my PB due to a problem with Filevault. Now, my G5 has TIger 10.4.8 and my PB is 10.3.9 and the 'software update line is telling me my software is up to date on both machines?
Any ideas why they are different and how to force the PB to 10.4.8?
    SF

    Hi Silverfox;
Your PB is update because it is running Panther and your G5 is up todate because it is running Tiger. You can get from Panther to Tiger with an update, you will have to buy the Tiger upgrade media and upgrade the PB to Tiger.
Using the install media for the G5 which is hardware specific would be both illegal and probably not work correctly any way.
