Pantone PLUS color definitions

One of the frustrating things with working with spot colors in the past has been that the CMYK equivalents that Adobe products used, didn't match the equivalents that Pantone provided in their books. I've seen hints that with Pantone Plus, that may no longer be a problem. Does anyone know for sure whether the Pantone Plus color definitions will be consistent from CS products across the Pantone books?
Thanks!

Adobe default CMYK value for a spot color is the Solid to Process value. To see this:
1. Add Pantone 293 Solid Coated to Swatches. You will see the CMYK icon. Wave the cursor over this icon: C=100, M=57, Y=0, K=2.
2. Add Pantone 293 Solid to Process. Wave your cursor over the CMYK icon: C=100, M=57, Y=0, K=2.
Adobe maintains this behavior to match legacy files. If they changed behavior now, then future outputs would change, and consequently new printings could look different from previous printings. This problem was encountered by Quark users with the change to version 7, when the Quark default switched from Solid to Process to Color Bridge Coated.

In previous post PDF mentioned Lab values, and that is the better way to convert Pantone colors to CMYK. But to do this you need to open the Ink Manager through the Swatches panel (in InDesign). Enable "Use Standard Lab Values for Spots". (note: Illustrator has a similar option, although it does not have an Ink Manager like InDesign). Notice that the CMYK icon changes to a Lab icon in the Swatches panel.
The conversion from Lab to CMYK is affected by the rendering intent and the Document CMYK color space. To see these, go to Edit: Assign Profiles.
If you have a spot color in InDesign, it is much better to make it process using the Ink Manager, instead of changing the color mode of the Swatch. If you need to convert one ink but not another, click on the spot icon in the Ink Manager to convert just one.
Regarding Pantone Plus: the Lab values of the spot colors have changed from the older Pantone libraries, along with the book CMYK values.
Edit: To see all the active inks in InDesign or Illustrator, use Separation Preview.

  • Pantone Plus Color Bridge Swatches don't match

    Hi
    I have used a Pantone Plus Color Bridge swatch (specifically Pantone 115 CP - yellow) in my inDesign CC 2014 project.
    I have an illustrator .eps file, created in Adobe Illustrator CC 2014 placed in the document. I have used the same Pantone Plus Color Bridge swatch in the .eps file.
    When printed there is a VERY noticeable difference between the yellow swatch in the inDesign document and the Illustrator placed graphic.
    It looks "correct" in the Illustrator placed graphic, i.e. it matches the swatch book but where the swatch has been used in inDesign, it seems to have shifted to an almost green hue.
    Could anyone explain why this might have happened?
    Thanks

    In your bottom capture the 187 swatch is from the the legacy Pantone library where solid color swatches were defined as CMYK. Here I'ved saved the old pre CS6 coated library and 187 is defined as a spot color but with CMYK values:
    Starting with CS6 the solid swatches are Lab definitions and if you chose to convert them to process CMYK, the conversion is color managed Lab to CMYK and the results will depend on your document's CMYK profile and not a Pantone set value. If you select the swatch and look at the Color panel you can see the definition is Lab and the type is Spot:
    If you don't want a color managed conversion for CMYK simulations use Pantone + Color Bridge, those swatches are defined as CMYK and the Type is Process

  • Why can't I find certain Pantone plus colors in Illustrator CS6 color books?

    Why can't I find certain Pantone plus colors in Illustrator CS6 color books? For example I want to use PMS 2296C, but it is not coming up in the color swatch book in Illustrator.

    Thanks!
    I actually just came across the same thing in the meantime.
    And it worked!
    If you bought the physical Pantone books, there is a registration/serial number on the back. You can go to Pantone and register it (https://www.pantone.com/pages/MYP_myPantone/mypProductRegistration.aspx)
    Then you're able to download the Pantone manager.
    There are infact 336 new colors added to the Pantone Plus series. And this is where you need to get them. Once you have them, in Pantone color manager, you go to: File/Export/Adobe Illustrator/sRB. Then restart Illustrator.
    Once you go back in, the new 336 colors are available!

  • Regarding Pantone Plus Colors

    Is it possible to manually remove the Pantone Plus .acb files from the Color Books folder and replace them w/the Pantone Palette Back up files so I can open an old file and save for someone who doesnt have the Plus loaded w/o damaging my CS5 Illustrator program?

    Try this:  Applications > Adobe Illustrator > Presets > Swatch Libraries; delete the existing Pantone+ variants and then look for the old version: Applications > Pantone Palette Backup; move them back to the Illustrator Presets > Swatch Libraries folder.  I just read the info in the back of "PlusLibrariesWhitePaper1_11.pdf"  Illustrator is the only application that will not have a data point of two different swatch libraries because of the confusion it generates.  I hope this helps, let me know if it works and you can replace the replacements.  There is no uninstaller because I think it is just a matter of deleting the .acb files manually.

  • Spot color definitions choices

    How can I make my spot color definitions choice persistent? I read a kb item that said how to swap out the new Pantone Plus color books for the old ones, to maintain color parity with older versions. One of the steps has me going to "Spot colors" on the swatches pallette and selecting "Use CMYK Values..." instead of "Use LAB Values...". I don't want to have to do this with every file. Is there a way to make this choice persistent?

    When  you create new documents Illustrator opens unsaved instances of regular Illustrator documents that are selected by using the New Document Profile Menu in the New Dialog window. The profiles that you see in this menu are like any other .AI files in a folder that will show when you choose Browse... from this menu.
    Just create a new document with your spot color definition and anything else you want to have when you are creating a new document and save it in that location or use Browse... from the New Document Profile menu to select it and Illustrator will remember you choice until you make another choice. You can also replace or edit the files used for profiles that came with the installation.

  • CS6 Pantone Plus Library Issues

    We are having problems maintaining color consistency for digital output (as well as color shifts on proofs) due to the recent CS6 Pantone Plus color library update.
    We have had to remove the updated libraries and replace them with the previous versions due to the unexpected color differences on output.
    Has anyone else been having problems with the Plus update?
    Is there a good explanation of why it was changed in the first place? We want to make sure we're not missing a good reason for the revised color libraries.
    Chuck

    Hi Guys,
    I've read through this whole forum and I have found a solution to everyones problem. It is a work around but will save everyone alot of time and hassle and so far it hasn't let me down.
    First step: Following the instructions as per the adobe page http://helpx.adobe.com/illustrator/kb/pantone-plus.htm for replacing the colour books. Make sure you follow all of the instructions for defaulting the setting in Illustrator CS6 to use only CMYK breakdowns (this is very very important) This will fix your problem in Illustrator however you will still notice that importing any artwork into indesign, the Pantone colours will still load as LAB versions (despite having deleted the Pantone+ swatches from your library)
    NOTE: you will find that if you load old artwork files it WILL load your desired CMYK versions of any pantones correctly. However when you add new swatches it loads these as lab breakdowns. WHICH IS WHAT WE ALL WANT TO GO AWAY TO PROVIDE CONSISTENCY WITH PREVIOUS CLIENTS.
    IMPORTANT INFO: Once a correct CMYK verions of a pantone has be imported into an Indesign document you CANNOT load the same pantone reference colour AGAIN. Meanding it is impossible to have a Pantone 282 C (CMYK) and Pantone 282 C (lab)... only one colour profile can be in a document. So basically if you pre-load all of the pantones as CMYK, Indesign is prohibited from STUPIDLY loading lab values of Pantones swatches:
    SO.....
    Step Two: (ensuring you have defaulted Illustrator in step1 correctly as per instructions from Adobe)... open Illutrator CS6. Create a new document. Click your swatches tab and clear it of all swatches so it is empty. Click OPEN SWATCH LIBRARY. click COLOUR BOOKS.  Navigate to the swatch Library you require, (for me a mainly use PANTONE solid coated) NOT PANTONE+ ) however since you have followed the steps in step 1 these will not appear in your list as you have deleted all of the pantone + library. ( you can repeat this for as many colour books as required. When the swatched table opens, click the first swatch colour, hold shift key and the click the very last swatch colour and drag these into your swatch panel. Your will now have the complete colour book all defined as Pantone/spot colour/ with a correct(traditional) CMYK value. Now go to "save swatch library as ASE..."within the swatch dropdown menu. And save this somewhere permanent.
    Step Three: Open Indesign CS6. Do not open a document. Go to your swatches tab. Click 'LOAD SWATCHES' and open your saved ASE file you made in Illustraor CS6. This will now load the full PANTONE colour library into your swatches tab. Remember as we said before that Indesign will NOT allow you to open two versions of the same pnatone reference, so no matter what file you open, as long as it has a pantone reference, lab or cmyk versions, because they are now already loaded into the swatch library, Indesign will force the conversion to ONLY BE CMYK values of your required Pantone references and IT WILL NOT default to lab values for Pantone colours.
    If required. When you have finished your artwork, select, "select all unused" and then delete the ones you don't need.
    WARNING: if you delete anything you have imported into your swatch library from your created ASE file... i.e. Pantone 282C.... when you manually add it back again inside Indesign it will default back to the undesired LAB breakdown of the Pantone.
    Hopefully this cures a few headaches, so you can all get back to work and enjoy what are some great benefits of using CS6 versions.
    On my final note, I do understand why Adobe is trying to force this change. It IS an improvement. However it does require that everyone in your company follows suit, it also requires that you explain this to each of your clients and it does mean changing colours and work flows, which is a decision of individual companies NOT the decision of Adobe to make it for you, which I think is a bad move on there part to try and FORCE this change.

  • Can't See Pantone Plus Series Colors!!!

    Hello there,
    Has anyone had any problems seeing Pantone Plus Series colors on Creative Suite 5.5? I don't see those colors when I open the color libraries, I'm talking about the + Series. Any help will be appreciated, urgent as I use these colors everyday!!! thanks!!!

  • 'Pantone Black' (color bridge uncoated / plus series) doesn't 'look on screen' as black at all.

    I'm working in Adobe Illustrator CC on a mac.
    'Pantone Black' (color bridge uncouted / plus series) doesn't 'look on screen' as black at all. A '100%K' black (cmyk) look perfectly black. The Pantone solid black appears nothing like a 'black' at all on screen. Is there a setting that makes the colors 'look' more like the end result?
    Also is there a reason, a lot of the colors in the 'Color Bridge Uncoated - Plus Series' doesn't come up in the Adobe Illustrator 'Color Bridge Uncoated' pallette?
    Can anybody help me out?

    What does the Pantone Black Uncoated Plus Series look like?  I mean, on your screen?  Is it brownish?  Not sure why Pantone Bridge does not show in Illustrator Bridge.  The entire color communications system(s) seemed to be a bit messed up.  There seems to be a drift on screen when looking at Pantone anything these days.

  • I am having difficulty installing Pantone Plus Series colors into InDesign CC 2014.

    I cannot figure out how to install PANTONE Plus Series Solid Coated 336 New Colors into InDesign CC 2014. I have installed the PANTONE color manager on my hard drive. Now what?

    There was a thread on this recently....
    You have to install one of the v2 fanbooks as the 336 supplement is now obsolete. Select the book you want, then from the file menu export to the programs of your choice.

  • Change multiple color definitions to same pantone?

    I am using FM10, I need to change a few unque color definitions to the same pantone color, I was successful with the first one but got system messages about not being able to define more colors to that same pantone. I understand this is a program rule, but I am wondering if there is a way around it because I still need to define those other colors as the same pantone. I tried a work around that failed - defining the same properties of the pantone I wish to use with regard to cmyb values but the color was not the same as the coated pantone I was trying to emulate, is there a trick I am missing here? Thanks for any help you may provide.

    Disclaimer: I don't work in managed or CMYK color. We leave (sRGB) color in, but print in B&W bitmap.
    I suspect that the thing that provides end-to-end color control with the Library colors is that they encode a <ColorLibraryInkName ...> which is passed into the PostScript output and also into any PDF output. The print shop or Pantone-aware RIP can see this name(tag), and knows how to render it. The encoded CMYK is probably ignored in that case (and may not match the initial Library settings in any case).
    The actual CMYK values in the PS and PDF are usually trashed by the Windows GDI, which despite the fake CMYK available in Vista SP1 and later, is still an RGB engine.
    If you save a document as a MIF, you can see the encodings using a plaintext editor.
    In the <ColorCatalog section of a test MIF, a typical Pantone looks like:
    <Color
      <ColorTag `PANTONE 3308 CVC'>
      <ColorCyan  99.998474>
      <ColorMagenta  0.000000>
      <ColorYellow  59.999084>
      <ColorBlack  71.998596>
      <ColorLibraryFamilyName `PANTONE\xa8  Coated'>
      <ColorLibraryInkName `PANTONE 3308 CVC'>
    > # end of Color
    Now suppose we create what we think is the same CMYK color:
    <Color
      <ColorTag `CMYK-100-0-60-72'>
      <ColorCyan  100.000000>
      <ColorMagenta  0.000000>
      <ColorYellow  60.000000>
      <ColorBlack  72.000000>
    > # end of Color
    Notice two things:
    No name. The print shop (or Pantone-aware print engine) has only the who-knows-what CMYK values to work with.
    The initial CMYK values aren't even the same, although they look identical in the Color Definitions dialog. And they will be even more different in the PS and PDF on the Windows platform.
    There could be easily be a more elegant way to fix this, but for a single file, a simple MIF hack would be:
    Make sure the named Pantone color is in the Color Catalog.
    Find, in the <ColorCatalog, each custom color that needs to be redefined.
    Delete it, from and including <Color to and including > # end of Color.
    Batch replace all other occurances of that custom color with the Pantone.
    Using the examples above, change all
    <FColor `CMYK-100-0-60-72'>
    to
    <FColor `PANTONE 3308 CVC'>
    Repeat the above for each custom color.
    Save the MIF and re-open in Frame.
    Another way to get all your CMYK content under a measure of color control is to do ALL the color content as imported EPS. Mr.Bill's GDI shredder passes it through unscathed. This means no Frame art and color text only with great annoyance.

  • I am missing colors in my Adobe Pantone Plus Library that are in my physical Pantone Plus Swatch Book.

    I have the most recent Illustrator downloaded and the Pantone Plus Library however I cannot find some Pantone numbers that are in my physical Pantone Plus book. One specifically is PMS Blue 2384.
    What do I do?

    Thanks but that is not the problem. I figured it out. You have to download Pantone Color Manager Software and use the serial number from your registered Pantone Plus book to register the software. Once you do that then you can download the extra 360 colors and then export them to the Adobe programs...
    Pain in the *** but it's the only way to get the extra colors in the Pantone plus book to your adobe Pantone Plus Library.The new Library is called Pantone+ V2.
    Thank you for the response though!

  • Script for removing color definitions

    I'm trying to create a script that will remove color definitions other than the default plus our corporate colors. I'm thinking some kind of "while" loop to go through the doc's color list, matching it to an array of named colors.
    I see that there is a Color object and methods such as Delete(), but it's not coming together for me.
    Any help would be appreciated.

    Finally able to get back to this project.
    Thanks for this snippet which does work great for removing a single "known" color. What I actually need to do is remove all colors except a specified list.
    I've made an attempt (I'm sill relatively new to JS programming), but it only deletes the first instance instead of iterating through all the color definitions:
    doc = app.ActiveDoc   //getting the active doc
    col  = doc.FirstColorInDoc   //getting the first color in doc
    keepColors = new Array ("Black","White","Red","Green","Blue","Cyan","Magenta","Yellow","Dark Grey","Pale Green","Forest Green","Royal Blue","Olive","Salmon","Mauve","Light Salmon","Custom Color");
    while (col.ObjectValid() )  //checking if the color object is valid
        if (col.Name in (keepColors))  //color exists
           break
    else {
    col.Delete()  //delete color
    col = col.NextColorInDoc
