Paper on science (astronomy) use of 3-d PDF

Hi folks,
for those of you interested in seeing how 3-d PDF can be used in the physical sciences you might like to see
this paper. While the subject area of the paper is 3-d PDF for astronomy publishing, it could equally be applied to many other areas of science.
The paper covers techniques such as plotting point distributions, plotting 2-d histograms, isosurfaces with different levels controlled by JavaScript, and even
volume rendering in 3-d PDF.
Thanks go to a couple of people on this list (esp. gbeardsl) for assistance with Acrobat 3D issues.

Hi Alexander,
thank you very much for bringing movie15 to my attention. This looks like a very interesting approach. A number of people have enquired about "cheaper" ways to do the 3d embedding than buying Acrobat 3D. In general many scientists will have access to academic pricing on Adobe products which actually makes it pretty cheap. However I agree it's useful to have more than one pathway to the final product.

Reports are special programs that provide selection screens and access databases. The logical database PNP consists of the database driver SAPDBPNP and is activated using the report attributes. It fulfils three main functions:
     Data retrieval:
HR data is written for each employee to the main memory, where it can be processed.
     Screening: A selection screen enables you to select employees in accordance with organizational criteria. For example, you can select all of the hourly wage earners of a particular personnel subarea.
     Authorization check: The implicit authorization check is another advantage of the logical database. Personnel data is frequently confidential and it does not make sense to allow all programs carry out the authorization check.

yes, it's easy - change a machine to the desktop you want (the image must be on all the machines, with the same name, of course), find ~/library/preferences/com.apple.desktop.plist Copy that to your server (or just put it on a flash drive) In workgroup manager select preferences - details - "add". Navigate to that plist. (Optional - hit "edit" and cut and past from "often" to "always", then the user cannot change the desktop at all, if you leave it in "often" it will reset next log-on.)

Hi,
You have to go to the next page, first page only lists 12 items. Anyway, HP supplies larger size papers for Laser printers. I don't know the reason behind:

I don't print photos at home, cost too much but for testing, I normally print 4 photos on one sheet (A4) and cut in 4.

When using the "Save as PDF" button

When using the "Save as PDF" button/function on the "View Responses" page for a selected response will the resulting file be savable locally and printable on 8.5x11" paper?
Also its Help bubble says that is savable as a PDF form. Does it really mean as a PDF file? Because saving it as a form appears to be a different option according to one pricing structure.

When you use the Save as PDF a pdf file if the form is created and saved to your local machine. When you save as PDF you have the option of having the resulting pdf file have a submit button or not have the button. There is also a feature where you can export the form to a template format called FCDT.

Hyperlinks don't work in PDF using Print Save as PDF

I am unable to figure out how to get hyperlinks within Numbers 09 to work after I use Print > Save as PDF. Please help.

The same way as you get them to work after you use Print > print to a sheet of paper.
PDF documents created via the Print dialogue (or via Export...PDF) are basically digital equivalents of paper documents.
If you want functioning hyperlnks in a PDF document, you need Adobe Acrobat or an equivalent application to create the document.

I have a problem using the "save as pdf..." command of the print panel of MS Word (lower L corner). When file has a few photos in it, the pdf file becomes huge; 7 mb Word file becomes 31 mb., on MacBook Pro with Intel Core 2 Duo processor , OS X 10.5.8

How can converting a MS Word file to a pdf make the file 5x bigger? Can someone tell me how to update the "save as pdf..." feature when "printing" a file in MS Word (Word:mac 2008, ver. 12.2.5). The problem is that using this to create pdf files gives huge files when the Word file has graphics pasted as pictures from Powerpoint, even for simple graphics and when first exported at low resolution (180 dpi) as jpg files from Powerpoint and inserted into Word.

Here's a little more info on the save_as_pdf issue. It is Word files in 97–2004 format (doc) that get 5x bigger. The conversion works fine and file size is normal if the Word file is saved in most recent Word format (docx rather than doc). Somehow MS Word can't save its own files properly in pdf format. Thanks Bill for all the frustration.

As of June 2014, none of the Adobe Reader mobile products support the hyperlink action for opening a separate PDF document.
Adobe Reader for iOS
Adobe Reader for Android
Adobe Reader Touch for Windows 8
In addition, the Reader mobile products do not open multiple windows/documents simultaneously, which would make the navigation between PDF documents nearly impossible. (Once a hyperlink takes you to a different PDF document, you have no way to go back to the original PDF document.)
The only Adobe Reader product that fulfills your department's requirements is Adobe Reader XI (mostly for Windows/Mac desktop/laptop computers). Acrobat Pro and Standard are paid products.
Because you are in search of a less expensive device for your department, you could get a Windows tablet instead of a Windows desktop/laptop computer. Microsoft Surface Pro (that you've mentioned in your previous reply) is just one example. You can also find other less expensive Windows tablets.
Tablets
However, please keep in mind that there are two different types of Windows tablets running two different operating systems.
(a) A Windows tablet with an Intel-based processor running Windows 8.1 Pro
Example: Surface Pro 3
You can install and run traditional desktop apps (e.g. Adobe Reader XI) and new Windows Store apps ("Modern" or "Metro-style" apps).
(b) A Windows tablet with an ARM-based processor running Windows RT 8.1
Example: Surface 2
You can only install and run Windows Store apps (e.g. Adobe Reader Touch) but not traditional desktop apps like Adobe Reader XI.
In general, type (b) tablets are more affordable than type (a) tablets. However, if you want to run Adobe Reader XI, you do need to check the technical specification of each tablet and make sure the following conditions are met.
Processor: Intel
Operating system: Windows 8/8.1 or Windows 8/8.1 Pro, not RT

Can I use data entered in PDF form's field(s) to auto-populate Save As file name?

I want to automate, as much as possible, the "Save As" process by using some of the data that the user entered in the fillable PDF form.
For example, I want to include the user's First Name and Last Name that they entered in the form to be part of the saved file name.
First Name: Bob
Last Name: Smith
Therefore, when you select to Save As part of the new file name will already have <BobSmith><today's date>.PDF
Form was created using LiveCycle Designer 11
PDF version: 1.7, Adobe Extension Level 8 (Acrobat X)

You should try the LiveCycle Designer forum, but from my experience with Acrobat forms it's not possible. What you can do is either save the file using the desired file name and path (without user interaction), if the script runs from a trusted context, or you can prompt the user with the desired file-name for the file, but not enforce them to use it, nor populate it into the Save As dialog itself.

Improving the handling of multiple line text fields is in our plans, but for now, you will have to add manual carriage returns (Enter).

How to tell what version of Acrobat or Reader was last used to save a PDF

How can I tell what version of Acrobat or Reader was last used to save a PDF file? My users are using fillable forms from grants.gov. We want them to use Adobe Reader 8.1.3 to fill these forms, but some accidentally use the Pro version of Acrobat. They need this to make PDFs from Word & other apps, but Pro will corrupt the fillable forms.
When I open a saved form in Reader 8.1.3 and click File > Properties it says Acrobat 7.x even though I know it was saved with 8.1.3.
Is there a way to know which version number and type (Reader or Pro) last saved a PDF?

But it won't tell you what was used last. It just gives the original information.
It also won't differentiate between Pro and Standard and of course won't mention Reader at all.
