Paper type selection .... Glossy,  Matte,  etc...

There appears to be no paper type selection menu when printing directly from iPhoto 7...with Epson R800 or Epson CX7800. I can take the .jpg image to other apps and print fine. I would have expected it to be in the block where "Standard" is located, but no other options appear in the format...
Worked fine in 6, 5 ....... with same printers, same systems
txs for sugg.

If it is there (and it is a printer driver feature) it is in the middle pull down menu of the next print screen II believe is is called "paper source" - so to get to it select your photos, make the selections (printer, paper size, print size) on that window and then click print again - in the middle of the new window there is a pull down window of the printer options that will include (if it is available - some of my printers have it (Brother I think) - some do not (HP I think) - to change that list requires contacting the manufacture - it is in their software, Apple simply provides the access to the feature
Some people have found that simply uninstalling the hp software and reinstalling it will fix this problem -- see the last few posts in this thread - http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1383540&tstart=0

• How to select paper type for Canon iP5000 with Leopard and Photoshop CS3.

I have printed photographs quite happily for years on my iP5000 using PS7 and 10.X. However since installing Leopard and switching to PS CS3 I am unable to select paper type (glossy, matt, etc). Is this a 10.5 problem, or as I suspect a CS3 problem. Any suggestions would be appreciated.
I can select paper type in other applications.

I don't know if it is the same for your printer but with my Canon MP600 I experienced the same problem until I came across the fact that when Print is clicked there is a Blue Triangle on the right of the dialogue. Click this and the paper type etc is displayed.

• Comment - Paper Types & Printing

Some of you may already be in the know regarding this topic, but it recently became important enough for me to warrant mentioning something to the general public.
I've been struggling since before XMas with print quality out of iPhoto and Aperture. Have since given up on Aperture (trial version anyways) and done most of my work in iPhoto and PSE 4.
I had printed out 80 photos from my honeymoon on HP Photo Paper - which came in my 6-pack of replacement ink cartridges for my HP Photosmart 8250. I was under the assumption that HP would include high-quality compatible paper with their ink package. I wrestled with color/image quality issues out of iPhoto for months, and then this past weekend I purchased some higher-quality HP photo paper and tried that.
The difference in my prints was significant - they were a lot better. I was able to undo digital changes to most pics and just print them out 'straight' and the quality is now great.
Keep in mind that, no matter how long you work on an image on-screen, you will be limited by using lower-quality paper. Go for the good stuff and you'll be happy. Don't walk the same path I did.

GTCBrown:
I suggest you do what I do and that is to do all your printing from Photoshop Elements. You can set PSE up to manage color, set up the print size and get the most control over your prints that you can have.
I don't know how the HP print window is set up but both Canon and Epson has options for their different types of paper, gloss, high gloss, matte, etc. I've been using Epson's Ultra Premium Presentation Paper, Matte, and find it to be turning the best prints I've ever make. They look better than some professional photographer prints that we got recently.
Here's how you can use PSE to edit photos from within iPhoto and then just stay in PSE to do the printing.
Using Photoshop (or Photoshop Elements) as Your Editor of Choice in iPhoto.
1 - select Photoshop as your editor of choice in iPhoto's General Preference Section's under the "Edit photo:" menu.
2 - double click on the thumbnail in iPhoto to open it in Photoshop. When you're finished editing click on the Save button. If you immediately get the JPEG Options window make your selection (Baseline standard seems to be the most compatible jpeg format) and click on the OK button. Your done.
3 - however, if you get the navigation window that indicates that PS wants to save it as a PS formatted file. You'll need to either select JPEG from the menu and save (top image) or click on the desktop in the Navigation window (bottom image) and save it to the desktop for importing as a new photo.
This method will let iPhoto know that the photo has been editied and will update the thumbnail file to reflect the edit..
If you want to use both iPhoto's editing mode and PS without having to go back and forth to the Preference pane, once you've selected PS as your editor of choice, reset the Preferences back to "Open in main window". That will let you either edit in iPhoto (double click on the thumbnail) or in PS (Control-click on the thumbnail and seledt "Edit in external editor" in the Contextual menu). This way you get the best of both worlds
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 08 libraries and Leopard. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

• In  iPhoto you r able to pick the type of paper, i.e. glossy, semi glossy, etc. I do not find where u can do so in Apeture..when I go file and select print, there r no instructions like in iPhote.

In iPhoto you r able to select paper type for phots, i.e. glossy , semi glossy, etc. how do u do this in apeture?

When you print in Aperture, you first specify the layout of your print in Aperture's "Print" panel, then press "Print". This will open the system print dialogue, and here you can specify the device specific print settings. If you set the pop-up menu to "Print Settings", you will be able to specify the Media Type, if your printer supports different media types.

• Cannot Select Paper Type in Photoshop 10

New Imac, new HP C5280, new copy of Photoshop 10 for Mac. No paper type is offered in print options, (matte, glossy, etc) in Photoshop. Hooked up my older Epson RX620, exactly the same problem, but both work in Win XP ok in Photoshop CS3. Being bounced around by tech help by HP, Adobe and Mac. All latest drivers downloaded and installed as per Tech help line instructions. No change. Anyone help?

so I've been pulling my hair out for 2 days & nights now trying to figure out why I couldnt print on custom paper sizes - I've just now hit the "help" icon in the print dialog box (so simple I didnt ever think to read through the steps set out!) and found this:
"Creating a custom page size
If you want to print on unusual size paper, such as an odd-size envelope or card, you may be able choose the paper’s size from the Paper Size pop-up menu. To find the Paper Size pop-up menu, choose File > Page Setup, if available. Otherwise, choose File > Print.
If you can’t find the size you need, you can create your own custom paper size.
To create a custom page size:
Open the document you want to print.
Choose File > Page Setup, if it’s available. Choose Page Attributes from the Settings pop-up menu, and then choose Any Printer from the Format For pop-up menu.
Choosing Any Printer ensures that your document can print on any printer that supports the paper size you select.
If Page Setup is not available, choose File > Print.
If the Print dialog contains only two pop-up menus and some buttons across the bottom, click the disclosure triangle beside the Printer pop-up menu.
Choose Manage Custom Sizes from the Paper Size pop-up menu.
Click the Add button.
Type a name for the paper size.
Enter values in the Paper Size and Printer Margins field."
All I had to change was the "any printer" setting from my (konica minolta) printers name to "Any Printer"!! now my custom paper sizes are printing fine and dandy!! phew!!!!!!!!
I know this isn't the exact prob you're having, but try the help in the print driver and follow the steps set out - it worked for me!

• Selecting Paper Type for HP Photosmart 8750 In Lightroom 3.3

Since converting to Lightroom v. 3.3 I am unable to select the paper types on which I wish to print from my HP Photosmart 8750 printer.  In the printer dialog box, the following option is grayed out:  "Photosmart PDE."  I also get the following message:  "The bundle 'HP Photosmart PDE' could not be loaded because it does not contain a version for the current architecture."  It then tells me to contact the bundle's creator for the latest version and then lists the following:  HP Photosmart PDE v. 5.3.  I would appreciate any thoughts as to what the problem is and how it may be corrected.  I have downloaded the most current printer driver and did not have this problem with Lightroom 2, so I am thinking that it must be a compatibility issue between the HP software and Lightroom 3. Thanks.

I inserted photo paper into the printer tray a the start but it printed horribly, like my old canon used to do when I accidentally stuck laser paper in instead of glossy / matte.
Other prints (like from iPhoto) print fine thru the printer.
The Print dialog in the pull down menu contains no options to look at or change the paper type.
On my pc I had a huge section of options when printing where I could select the profile, colour correction, print quality etc etc on any print. Cant seem to find the same options thru Mac.
Still puzzled?!

• How do you select paper type in Photoshop Elements 10?

Sorry to be a total technotard, but in the olden days, I could select paper type (e.g. glossy photo) from the print menu when printing from Photoshop. I now have a new iMac & Photoshop Elements 10,  and there is no way to select paper type, at least not that I can find.  Is this an Adobe Elements thing?  Cuz I can't figure out how to do it, and it's driving me nuts!!!!!!   Thanks in advance for any help.

If you are working in Full Edit you need to have an image open in the main window. Then Click:
File à Print
After selecting your print size and paper size, hit the Print button.
When the system print dialog opens use the Quality & Media and other dropdown menus.

• Can't select paper types

(Mac OSX 10.5.2, LR 1.3.1) Going crazy trying to figure this out. Somewhere around the time HP updated drivers for the Photosmart Pro B8350, I lost the ability to select anything but one paper type. As a result, none of my prints are coming out properly whereas they were perfect before. I've totally removed both the HP software and Lightroom, and started all over again. Bottom line is that only one paper type will show up in Lightroom when I select managed by application.
When I click the profile drop-down menu from the main Print module, I'm presented with two choices: Premium Plus photo (tricolor+grey) and Premium Paper (tricolor+grey). I used to be able to select from a bunch of options. OK, so I use the third menu option, which is Other and gives me a list of profiles to appear in the custom profile popup. I see Advanced Photo Glossy, and check it.
Now I can select it, but when I hit Print... and the printing dialog comes up and I double-check Paper Type/Quality, the only thing that shows is "Premium Plus Photo Paper" and all of the other options, including Advanced, are greyed-out.
I do see that there seems to be some confusion/changes or something related to where printing components are installed. I see that in ~/user/library/colorsync/profiles, things from my previous color printer. The HP stuff all installed in /Library/Printers/hp/Profiles/Photosmart and /Library/Printers/hp/Profiles/business-inkjet
Now that I look at it, the only profiles that sort match my printer name (HP PSPro B8300) are in the business-inkjet folder - NOT the photosmart folder. That doesn't seem right; this isn't a business inkjet printer, it's a photo printer.
I put some screenshots here: http://web.mac.com/vincentdistefano/HP-Lightroom/printing_problems.html
Is this a Lightroom problem? An HP problem? Mac? Very frustrating, as this used to work flawlessly. In fact my print dialogs still have all the nice presets I had set up before, but of course none of them work now.
Any help greatly, greatly appreciated.

Hi John, Thanks for the tip. I will try that next. Below is a crash log. I printed to the 2200 from Photoshop, then in the print dialog tried to go to "color management" to turn color management off (I am getting magenta prints due to double profiling).

"hp website says the driver is built-in to the new macs, and I don't need to d/l a new one"
First of all, this is a crock.  And a very tiresome one, as it's been used as an excuse not to post drivers for download.
The driver is not "built into" a Mac.  There may be some version of it installed IF you happened to install hundreds upon hundreds of gigabytes of printer drivers (the vast majority of which are obsolete and brands you've never nor will ever own) when you installed the OS.  This view is just so idiotic, as you won't have installed every HP driver ever made if you didn't own an HP printer or plan to hook it up to that computer.
Apple compounds the problem by not giving you any way to pick and install a printer driver.  Seriously, in 2009.  And this in addition to the Mac's inability to detect a new printer after you plug it in, and ask if you want to install a driver.  People tolerate that while making fun of Windows, which has been detecting new hardware and prompting for drivers since what, 1995?
Anyway, I believe it was HP who complained that they "didn't have room on their servers" to offer drivers for download.  Unfrigginbelievable.
Nobody who pays any attention to their printing should even consider an HP printer.  That's how incompetent their drivers are, for both platforms.
Sad.

• Can't select paper type or output quality when printing from new imac....

Not sure if I'm in the right place to post this question....
When I try to print (from ANY app; Photoshop, InDesign, etc.) to my hp business jet inkjet printer, I get a print menu, but no where on the print menu (or any pulldown tabs) do I have an opportunity to select paper type or output quality. I am unable to print photos, for example.
The printer worked fine with the old PC; there is no driver to d/l for mac.
Only from iPhoto can I select paper type (from a limited number of choices), but not from any other app on my imac. I mostly use InDesign and print flyers and brochures, many with photos, and can't select anything other than plain paper. Do I need a new printer? Genius bar 'help' said they had no idea why it wasn't working....
HELP!!!
Thanks!

Hi Duane,
Yes, I opened the Printer Driver package, and then pulled up my test InDesign file and selected File>Print, and here's the screen i get: (hope this works, I'm trying Skitch for the first time)...

Click for full size - Uploaded with plasq's Skitch
when I click on "Setup" in the print menu box, I get this screen:

Click for full size - Uploaded with plasq's Skitch
I've clicked on each topic on the left on the Print menu, and still there is no where to select paper type or output resolution.
The same thing happens when I print from Photoshop.
Thanks.

All of a sudden i cannot copy any document with my 3210 All In One.  I keep getting the message shown above on the screen.

Hi @nunzio317
I would like to help you with your Photosmart 3210. I understand that when you copy you see a message on the printer that says "Paper detected does not match paper size or type selected". Does this also happen when you print from the computer, or only when you copy? Have you tried copying a different size paper, and what size paper are you currently using?
Are you able to print a self test report? If you are unsure, please try, and let me know;
Load plain white paper into the tray.
Press the Setup button.
Press 1 to display the Print Report menu.
Press 1 again to select Self-Test Report. The self-test report prints.

• Adobe apps crash when selecting paper type in print driver

I installed the CS5 design premium suite and it worked fine ... did not crash when I selected the different paper types in the xerox driver. Then today the updater ran and did updates for all the programs, and now I can't select the paper type.
Running osx 10.6.4  and the printer is a Xerox 7665

Don't worry, solved it. Tested the printer using my powerbook G4 running 10.4.8. It worked fine so I copied the HP folder from /Library/Printers from the PB to the PM G5, repaired permissions using disk utility, rebooted and the G5 can now print fine to the HP.
