PAR causing vertical letterboxing (black bars)

I recorded in HDV PAL, now I am trying to export to SD PAL (720x576)...
I have exported using the Media Encoder and I get black bars on the sides (e.g. vertical letterboxing).
I did a bit of research and I see that this is due to the corrected Pixel Aspect Ratios of CS4.
I am told on other forums that the overscan of a telelvision will not show these bars, however I preparing my video for DVD, but I am going to be making digital versions for online use...
Thats a problem, as I don't want to see the black bars at all.
So I need to know if I can correct this mis-match in PAR's, or if I am stuck with it from now on with CS4...??

I have a problem...
Once the video is out of VirtualDub I it and it is skewed vertically...
Here is the media info from the lagarith video file:

  • OS X Mavericks 10.9.2 update causes vertical window slide bar to disappear

I have had OS X 10.9.1 with no problems on a MacBook (13 in., late 2008). The auto update installed 10.9.2 and the vertical slide bar on all windows disappears, making navigation of documents and windows impossible. The system installed itself twice and I have had to restore the OS from Time Machine - twice. I have turned off System Preferences/App to stop auto downloads and updates but I cannot stop this auto update of OS X 10.9.2. My Mac notebook is about 5 years old and worked with NO problems until this 10.9.2 disaster. I need to stop the update from happening yet again, at least until this bug is fixed (if it ever is for my system). How do I stop this 10.9.2 nightmare from installing over and over? Is it possible to delete the 10.9.2 download?

I disabled the auto-updates after the second auto-update yesterday (and after the Time Machine restore to 10.9.1). The update had already been downloaded prior to that. Apps started nagging me this morning about the update - again. There is no "cancel" option, all I do is click on "Remind me tomorrow". I suspect it will install it again anyway in the days ahead, or I may go ahead and do the update and see if the nav bar is still there given the Preferences > General fix. Thanks.

  • Black bars (letterboxing) on images added to PSE 12

I'm trying to make a video in PSE12 out of downloaded DSLR stills with preset at 1080P / 30fps, but all my stills come in letterboxed.  Resizing in PS12 only offers pixels or percent ---- and width height and dpi.
How do I get rid of the letterbox / black bars--- which preset should I use in PSE12 --- I think I've tried them all with no luck.

    Jerry Miller
The answers are in those photos pixel dimensions. 4928 x 3264 is 3:2. And, your Premiere Elements 12 project is 1920 x 1080 16:9. The puzzling part is that you seem to say that you have tried your photos as 1920 x 1080 and still have the black borders problem.
Let us go through a check list as well as cross check information to make sure that we are in sync with the details.
What program are you working with? Photoshop Elements 12 or Premiere Elements 12.
From the onset you refer to PSE12. Typically that is used to represent Photoshop Elements 12. PE12 is the typical representation for Premiere Elements 12 for those who do abbreviations. Please verify that you are working or not working solely in the Premiere Elements 12 Windows Expert workspace.
Is Photoshop Elements 12 or the Elements Organizer 12 involved in any of this? Or is this solely a Premiere Elements 12 matter?
    Check List
    1. When you resized your 4928 x 3264 3:2 to 1920 x 1080 16:9, how did you do that? Are you sure that you did not end up with 1440 x 1080 4:3 instead of 1920 x 1080 16:9.
After you import your 1920 x 1080 16:9 into your 1080p Premiere Elements project, right click its thumbnail in Project Assets and select Properties. Does the Properties readout show 1920 x 1080 or something else?
    2. Open a new Premiere Elements project Expert workspace
    a. Edit Menu/Preferences/General and make sure there is a check mark next to "Scale Default to Frame Size".
    b. Then manually set your project preset to NTSC/DSLR/1080p/DSLR 1080p30@ 29.97
    c. Import your confirmed 1920 x 1080 16:9 photo into the project with Add Media/Files and Folders/Project Assets from where you drag it to the Timeline.
How many of these photos are going into this 1080p project?
Let us focus in on the above. There is no way to get black borders for a 1920 x 1080 16:9 photo going into a 1080p project.
    Thanks.

  • Black Bars on Imported Frames

    Hi,
I have a QT movie (720 X 480) that I exported some still frames using the Movie to Picture option with compression set to None. When I import the stills into iMovie, the pictures are squeezed vertically with black bars at the top and bottom.
I have tried turning off the Automatic Letterboxing in iMovie's preferences before importing with no success. As an experiment, I trimmed the QT movie to about a 1 minute clip and imported that into iMovie. It looks correct, so why don't the stills size correctly? Any help appreciated!

I found an answer to my problem. Resizing the frame to 720 X 528 works perfectly. More info here:

  • Vertical Black Bars On Composition During Export

Once finished with my composition, which contained several layers, I began the export process...only to find vertical black bars on each side of the composition. My project was set-up as 1080p. I read that changing it to 720p would resolve the issue. However, once I did that, all of my layers are now HUGE on the composition.  Any help would be great!  Thanks!

Just pick a standard 1080 P square pixel comp size and frame rate from the Presets in comp settings, then render using a 1080P preset in the AME. Here's my most common preset:

  • Why does interlaced video have vertical black bars?

Despite looking all over the internet and asking video editors I know, I've never yet found a satisfactory answer to this question:
When I bring DV PAL footage into my Mac, why are there always very thin black vertical bars on each side?  And why is the image being squeezed slightly?
I think it may have something to do with interlacing.
If you look at my screenshot here.
You can see that the top image (QuickTime 7 Player) exhibits the issue I'm talking about (the prescene of combing on the man shows this is interlaced).
But the black bars have disappeared in the bottom image (QuickTIme Player X) - and you can see that it looks slightly horizontally stretched by comparison. I'm guessing this is something to do with the fact that QuickTime Player X DE-interlaces video.
The question remains though... what is it about interlacing that introduces black bars and an incorrect aspect ratio??

If you are ripping "standard" format content (4x3 ratio) then it will just appear like that on a widescreen TV. You shouldn't have that problem if you're ripping widescreen content (16x9 ratio).

  • 2 Vertical Black Bars Across Screen...

Anyone know about or experienced vertical black bars (2) across the monitor after returning from sleep or standby mode?
I'm just worried my computer will crap out on me when it's most inconvenient so I'm trying to guage what computer problems/elderly computer symptoms I'll be dealing with in it's decline. It's only from 2009, but it's heavily used and has lots of graphic design and media software on it.
Note: The SD card recently stopped working, and the Genius bar determined it was a mechanical failure. Also, the CD burn hasn't been working for a while.
Using a Macbook pro os x, leopard, purchased 2009.

It only happens for a split second, and before/while the computer is waking up so when I try to take a screen shot, it doesn't work because it's not fully on yet. However, I will take a pic with some other device so I do have a picture of it. And I FOR SURE have all my data backed up plus on a flash.
    Thanks for the advice.

  • 16:9 black bars(letterbox?)

hello ,can i get some help understanding this?
i use the sonyf1 and z1 ,shoot 16:9 capture 16:9 ,sequence settings anomorphic,
i want my end film to have the black bars on top and bottom(is that letter box?)
sometimes i can get it, other times i spend hours trying to get it .
sometimes when i scale up one image to say 115% the black bars are scaled to,
i am confused whether i should set 4:3 in the sequence settings ,
any help solving my pixel aspect ratios once and for all ,so i have a clear understanding ,i would be so greatful
    cheers all
    simon
    i always shoot 16:9

Then edit your video in FCP using the right 16:9 preset for your footage with no letterboxing at all and export in the same way, keeping the aspect settings like in the video.
When you author the final DVD in DVDSP (I think you'll do so), then you must take care of the letterboxing setting to the Tracks "Display mode: 16:9 letterbox" (don't use pan&scan settings at least you know why !!!!)
In that the DVD player will set show the letterboxing when he needs:
    - In a 16:9 TV you'll see the movie full screen
    - In a 4:3 TV you'll see the black bars (letterboxing)
Use the same "Display mode: 16:9 letterbox" setting for the menus in DVDSP and you'll get the same result. Take care of where you locate the buttons !!

  • Black bars/Letterbox Issue

    Hi,
I imported DV PAL 48 from camera, opened a DV PAL project with DV PAL settings on the sequence confirmed. When I open the clip file in the Viewer the image size takes up the full screen area, to the edge. However, editing and inserting a clip into the Canvas black bars appear above and below the image which seems letterboxed. The sequence settings match the properties of the captured clip. Any ideas on why this is happening?
    Much Appreciated.

Sounds like you are putting clips which are tagged as anamorphic in a 4:3 sequence.
    Important:
    1. Are your clips 4:3 or 16:9 anamorphic and tagged accordingly?
    2. Is your sequence 4:3 or 16:9 anamorphic? (look for the little check box "anamorphic" int the sequence settings)
The settings have to match for both the clips and the sequence.
If the clips are tagged as anamorphic, and they shouldn't, you can untag them in the browser. Just scroll to the right, until the anamorphic column appears, then un-tag.

  • Keep getting black bars (letterbox) on DV AVI export...can't figure it out - suggestions please?

I hope someone can help -- have tried every setting and getting quite frustrated.
I've on may occassions edited a VOB file in Premiere Elements 3 and then did File>export>movie> to get a DV AVI file.  Usually the results are fine.
This time I'm using a PAL widescreen DVD, so I've adjusted the settings to PAL and widescreen, but for some reason I'm getting a very distorted letterboxed result.  However, if I export to MPEG, it comes out perfectly.
I have no idea if this is the best approach, but how I've always done it without problems.  I'm basically trying to get an avi file so I can then convert it in Quicktime Pro to a quicktime file for uploading to my website as QT (and as a flash video using the QT source).   The only reason I don't export directly to QT is I always find the outcome really bad converted through PEL vs. in QT.
If anyone has any suggestions why I'm getting my AVI file letterboxed, please let me know.  Thanks for any suggestions!

Thanks. I just tried Upper field first, but it didn't fix the problem.
Here are my project settings: Harddisk, widescreen 48kHz
    General
    Editing mode: DV PAL
    Timebase: 25.00 fps
    Video Settings
    Frame size: 720h 576v (1.422)
    Frame rate: 25.00 frames/second
Pixel Aspect Ratio: D1/DV PAL Widescreen 16:9 (1.422)
    Fields: Upper Field First
    Capture Format
    DV Capture
    Video Rendering
    Here are my export settings:
    Microsoft DV AVI
    ENtire timeline
    Project
    DV PAL
    720x576 16:9
    25fps
    Use project setting
    Upper field first
I just installed PEL v.7 that I also had, and still getting side black bars!  So frustrating.  Really appreciate any other suggestions.
Also, just ran the VOB through Gordon Knot program and it says my original aspect ratio is: 1.422
I can convert to MPEG fine, but just need an AVI so I can convert to quicktime.  THanks!

  • Vertical Black Bars

    Hi,
Not sure whether this is the right forum but here goes: -
I am experiencing a problem playing back widescreen DVDs in Windows Media Player 11.
The video does extend the full width of the screen. Instead it has black bars either side.
The file properties (in WMP) say it is 4:3 (hence the black bars). I know this NOT to be the case and it plays fine in WMP on another computer.
16:9 video files (mpeg2) play fine and are identified correctly.
    Ati Radeon X1600SE (see https://forum-en.msi.com/index.php?topic=103427.0)

Using 8.28 supplied by HP (their latest).
Tried latest from ATI but had an issue, see https://forum-en.msi.com/index.php?topic=103427.0 (this link also has my current video card info).
Not sure what codec WMP is using as it is not listed when I show file properties when playing.
If I play an MPG file generated from ulead videostudio it displays ok (16:9) and WPM uses a cyberlink decoder.
When I burn this file to DVD with added menus i get the issue, but also with retail widescreen DVDs

  • Firefox on my wife's laptop has lost the black bar that used to show Maps, Gmail etc. Now at the top of the screen there is a blank bar, triple height, with just the Google search input box. How do I get this back? Or is this a question for Google?

When I open Firefox there is a black bar, sometimes vertical, other times horizontal, across the top, with links to Maps, Gmail etc. When I open Gmail the same links are listed across the top of the screen, right under the Tabs. In my wife's laptop this appears in the Firefox start-up screen, but not in the Gmail screen. At the top of her screen is a super-wide gray bar with just a Google search input box. Is this a Firefox or Google problem?
She has XP Home SP3 and Firefox 9
    Thanks for any help.

What happened yesterday may have been caused by the SOPA protest action that was joined by a lot of sites yesterday and such an action won't happen that often.

  • 320x240 QT export produces black bars on right and left

Ok, this one is strange. So far, it only appears to affect 320x240 targets from sources that don't have square pixels. Starting with a 720x480 DV movie (even if I change the properties to display 640x480), I export directly to 320x240 and I get a movie with black bars down the right and left. I did not tell QT to letterbox or scale, although telling it to scale does no help.
The problem seems to be in the meta data. If I go to the movie's visual properties and change the move dimensions to 324x240 (with preserve aspect ratio unchecked), then the black bars disappear. When I change it back to 320x240, they are still gone and the movie plays fine. I save it and reopen it, and the black bars are back! The same thing happens exporting from Final Cut Pro using Quicktime conversion. This is definitely a bug.
The work around is to export to another 4:3 format with square pixels first and export that to 320x240.
On a related note, the same thing happens when I record a movie in Quicktime at 320x240. I get a recording with black bars down the sides.
This has never happened to me before. I'm a professional QT software developer and a content producer. I've been using Quicktime Pro for a decade, at least. I've been over all of the export settings, and I've deleted all of my Quicktime preference files.
Is there a way to report a bug to Apple?

Regarding: "there's a pretty good chance that your playback target isn't Quicktime Player"...
My assumption is that if your material is 320x240, it's probably that size because you're planning to either display it on a small-screen device, send it to a TV set, embed it in a presentation, or deliver it via the Web. In any of those cases, your final delivery target isn't QuickTime Player, but rather some other mode, such as the QuickTime web plug-in, iPod, AppleTV, or even some other option. In which case the strangeness with the player doesn't seem so strange.
As a workaround, you could layer your 320x240 movie with at 350x240 grey rectangle on the layer behind. That would fix it in QuickTime Player, but it would cause grey bars on either side if you embed into a web page or something like that.
