Paragraph Alignment and Justification different in Word 2003 and 2010

Hi all,
We are migrating some letter templates from word 2003 to word 2010 for our system and we found a alignment problem in word 2010 (actually, it is not a problem and I think the behavior in 2010 is correct)
In word 2003, the following paragraph alignment will display like this :
"To enjoy your membership in our service center, please remit a payment of US$
123456789.00 per annual"
In word 2010, the following paragraph alignment will show like this
"To enjoy your membership in our service center, please remit a payment of
US$ 123456789.00 per annual"
(US$ 123456789.00 is shown on same line in 2010 but US$ and dollar amount are not
on the same line in 2003)
Although I think the paragraph alignment in 2010 is more reasonable, I still want to achieve back
the look in 2003 such that we can easily to compare results.
As in one post that I asked help in this forum, one expert shows me that there is option to set back the layout
look behavior in 2003, I guess if there are some advance settings to achieve this?
Please kindly advise to me on this.
Thanks in advance for your help,
Ray

There is a difference, but it turns out to be a "2-factor" one. As far as I can tell, "enabling an 'east asian' language for editing" is the other factor. When you create
a document with such a language enabled, wrapping of currency amounts works differently in Windows Word 2007 and later. Once created, the problem seems to occur even on copies of Word that only have (say) English enabled.
In Word 2003, having such a language enabled for editing appears to make no difference.
Whether "enabling of an 'east asian' language is the cause of the problem described by the OP, or the only thing that will result in such a difference, I cannot tell.
Here, I tested roughly as follows:
 a. back up normal.dot/normal.dotm
 a. open Word 2010 and ensure only English is enabled as an editing language
 b. create a new document
 c. Type
" $          a"
(space, $, 10 spaces, "a", no quotation marks).
 d. Type text + spaces before that, until the "a" wraps onto the next line.
 e. save and close that
 f. enable (say) one of the Chinese languages for editing.
 g. restart Word
 h. repeat (b)-(d). This time, I think you will see that the $, 10 spaces and the "a" wrap as a unit.
 i. Save that.
 j. disable the East Asian language again and restart Word. Open each document and see how the wrapping behaves.
Here, I happen to have Chinese enabled as one of the editing languages in my copy of Word 2003 and I do not see the "wrap as a unit" behaviour in that case, or in either
of the two .doc fiels saved from Word 2010.
Here, the behaviour appeared to be the same whether I used $, £ (UK pound sign) or the Yen character symbol, but not the Euro currency symbol.
I saved my test files (including some created in Word 2003) in 2007 XML format and tried to pin down the significant difference. Per-dcoument compatibility settings
didn't seem to be involved. Changing the w:eastAsia language attribute in the following element in the styles.xml file was enough to change the behaviour:
<w:styles><w:docDefaults><w:rPrDefault><w:rPr><w:lang ...

  • Is paragraph alignment possible in RH 6 HTML?

    Hi all,
Most of the topics I've created include text boxes, tables, and screen shots - all of which I can set the size for best viewing. But so far I haven't been able to find a way to control the paragraph text so that it doesn't stretch beyond the boxes, tables, and images when accessing the help pages without the content pane (TOC) open or having to minimize the page size. I've tried using the margin ruler, the paragraph alignment, and the page setup function, but nothing seems to do the trick. What I'm aiming for is nicely alignment topic when opened as a single help page or as part of a manual w/TOC.
    I'd appreciate your input. Thanks!

    Hi there
You are probably looking for something RoboHelp doesn't help you with easily.
If you hand edit the HTML code, you can insert a DIV on the page to make it adhere to a specific width.
Basically the HTML *MAY* look something like this:
This may make the editor look a bit odd as things are now inside a dotted rectangle frame. But it should work.

  • Printing microsoft word 2003 document and pdf created from the document are different

I created a microsoft word 2003 document with jpg pictures and printed it on my HP Inkjet printer. I then created a pdf by saving as a pdf from the microsoft word 2003 document. The settings for images were 300 dpi and zip compression. The pdf file created was ~3 MB whereas the word document was ~250 KB. It looked fine on the screen but when I printed it the jpg pictures from the pdf were very dark and not very desirable. When I printed it on my HP Color laser 2600n printer I couldn't see the difference in the jpg pictures.
I am creating the pdf files to send to the online publisher lulu.com to print. I have used the settings to create the pdf they recommend from their website; however they aren't real clear in the information they give for the recommended settings.
My question is why would the print out be so awful using the HP Color Ink Jet printer since it is very good for printing pictures?

There are many reasons, but most revolve around the color space and coding for the colors. Acrobat uses 8 bit RGB.

  • Help file fails to generate RoboHelp 7 and Word 2003

Hello, I am back again with a new struggle.  I am creating a WinHelp4 file for an older application using Word 2003 and Robohelp 7.  There are several different results regardless of whether I make updates, corrections, add jumps, change Topic IDs or do nothing when I click on generate:
    1.  sometimes it generates and works perfectly, just not very often, usually between 8 and 805am ET.
    2.  sometime it will generate an error:  Failed to compile
    3.  another error:  filename.rtf does not exist, but it is there in the folder
    4. generates a Warning, but I don't know what the warning is as it does not show it
    5. generates a blank Help with only a single glossary definition
    6. not enough memory ( 1 gb is available)
    7. corrupted file, rerun and it works...sometimes
    I have:
    1. Started over
    2. Rebooted
    3. Uninstalled and reinstalled RoboHelp 7 and all updates
    4. Tried adding one item (jump, new topic, changed topic, updates to TOC, renamed anything) at a time and then generated file
    5. Create an html from Word...I know silly but it worked some of the time.
I feel like there must be a setting error I missing or something hidden that I need to remove.  There is something or a very big bug! I can't find anything and RoboHelp 7, Word 2003 and creating Winhelp4 files have been fine the last 2 months...now...not so fine.
Please help!  I am so close to finished!
    Thanks,
and if this isn't enough, I cannot generate a print to PDF either, but used to!

I wish I could try on a different PC.  This is a government facility and that is not an option.  There are only 2 of us who have RH and I think the other person may have left last week...what luck!
As far as anything else running, that is possible....I may try disconnecting the network and see if it will work...that should check it, right?
Background resources are very probable as their are virus scanners and who knows what else...my rights are very limited, no Admin rights to the machine.
It just amazes me that it has worked and now at the very final stage and updates it will not.  I am in early when it usually works, 745a ET and it failed.  These are the error messages and I usually get this type:

Warning - HC4009: The Topic ID "Data_Capture_Operations" specified in the Project files as the Default Topic does not exist.
What is odd, is they are both there and have worked consistently up until this recent failure....cannot complile.

  • Saving from Windows Microsoft Word 2003 and ACL !

    hi
    the situation:
If I save directly from the Word to a Network-drive I get a strange behaviour of the ACL's !
the file get added ACL 'Users' and an other 'Everyone' the from the parent folder inherited ACL tbsxuser will be tripled !
If I copy the same file from the desktop to the Network-drive the behaviour is like expect !
    OSX Server 10.5.5
    WIN XP SP2
    Microsoft Word 2003 SP3
    any solution for that

    Hi!
I have the same problem with Office 2007. On a share I have set ACL "Domain Users Read/Write" to propagate to all directories. The POSIX rights are set to "rw" for owner/group/others. When I save an Excel file to the shared directory, the following happens:
    - POSIX rights are all turned off to none
    - the creator, Users, and Everyone will get ACL entries (read/write, read only, and read-only)
    - Domain Users ACL is present 4 times
After the next save the Domain Users ACL is present 10 times, one more time and there are 22 entries.
It is clearly a problem with Office. Notepad doesn't change the file permissions. I have not yet tried different locking settings. Currently both strict and oportunistic locks are set on.
Also I'd like to add that this strange behaviour happens both on 10.5.6 and 10.4.11, I just tested this.
I think it would be good to be able to see if the same happens on a Windows Server share but I need to figure out how to test it. File Properties in Windows Explorer doesn't show multiple ACLs even though Mac Server Admin shows they are there.

  • Page numbers display as 5 of 1 and 2 of 2121 in a PDF that was created from a Word 2003 document

We merge several Word 2003 documents into 1 larger document that we then convert to PDF.  The page numbers in the Word document display properly - 1 of 21, 2 of 21, 3 of 21, etc.  We then convert that merged document to PDF by right-clicking the filename and choosing "Convert to Adobe PDF".  For those of us with Adobe Acrobat Standard 8.1.3, the page numbers in the converted PDF file display as 1 of 1, 2 of 1, ... 21 of 1.  Those with Acrobat Professional 8.1.3, they display as 1 of 21, 2 of 2121, 3 of 212121, etc., each page adding another total number of pages to the total.  There is no change in the result if using v8.0.0 or 8.1.4  Does anyone have any ideas???

Unless you have a specific reason to upgrade to OFFICE 2007, I would not recommend it. I hate it -- have it on two computers. I have had problems creating PDFs reliably from WORD 2007 and PPT 2007, at least with graphics. The conversion seems to want to split graphics up into several parts rather than leave it as one. It does not happen with WORD 2003 and so assume this is some sort of issue with OFFICE 2007. You can get the graphics fine if you use the MS plugin for PDF creation, but then you have to deal with the MS version of a PDF. If you want to try it on one computer in your office, I would do that before you make the change. However, if what you have meets the need, then why change unless there are specific items that you are looking for and don't have.
OK, that is my opinion. I am sure there are counter arguments. If I had the preference on my newer machines, I would have OFFICE 2003. Bill

  • Intro and Font Issue w/ Word 2003

Hey everyone, I'm new to the board here and looks like
there's quite a bit of good info here.
If this has been covered already somewhere, I'd like to check
    out the thread.
The machine I'm working with is set up with Windows 2000,
Office 2003 (with the Word 2003 fix), updated to RoboHelp X5.0.1.
I'm generating Win2000 help that just insists on using Times
New Roman font in the resulting help file no matter what I do.
Every font I change in the style in Word keeps on invading my help
file as Times. I've messed around with the templates to no avail.
I've copied the Robohelp.dot template into another directory
and changed it, and that did nothing. I've also changed Normal.dot
to see if that does anything, and am still coming up with Times New
    Roman in my help file.
"Automatically Update Styles" is not checked underneath the
document template file selection field, so my style changes appear
to be sticking with the Word document when I close and re-open it.
    Any suggestions? Thanks!

  • Do you know if it's possible to generate Word 2003 files from RoboHelp if we're using Office 2007 and RoboHelp 2007?

Do you know if it's possible to generate Word 2003 files from
RoboHelp if we're using Office 2007 and RoboHelp 2007? We are
thinking of upgrading, but have customers that would still require
Word 2003 formats because they won't have 2007 installed.
    Thanks!

    Hi NewtoRobohelp
Unfortunately I don't have Office 2007 in front of me to test
with. But I'm thinking that as long as Office 2007 still produces
the same formats as 2003, you could do it this way.
From RoboHelp 7 and using Office 2007, generate Printed
ouptut. Open said printed output in Office 2007 and perform a Save
As. Save the document as a RTF (Rich Text Format) document.
RTF is more universal. So I'm thinking this may be a possible
way around it. There is also the possibility that Word 2007 offers
up an ability when saving a file to save in an older format.

  • Why is my spell checker not working in a document using Word 2003

I have a word document in Word 2003  .   I was altering it and noticed that from page 3 to 6 the spell checker does not work.
I transferred the pages into another another file still didn't work .  Just copied a paragraph still didn't work.  So I then started typing the rest of the document into another file and straight away it underlined my spelling mistakes in red.
So why not in these few pages of my document.
This is a paragraph from the pages below.  I altered some words deliberately to see if my Word 2003 would pick them up.  It didn't.
The landlord shall be entitiled to pursue the tenant for any reasonable costs incurred as a result of the tenant’s faulure to pay rent including but not limited to any charges for returned cheques or any reasonable costs incurred
in pursuing the tenant for payment of unpaid rent.
But when I put it in here it does pick them up.  So it is something I have done .

  • How to save edit settings under preferrences to use when creating or printing a PDF from word 2003 Windows PC 8.1

I have tried to save my PDF settings after editing them, but when I go to "Print" to PDF and check the settings I keep getting Standard default settings.
There is no Adobe PDF listed as a file heading to change conversion settings on my Word screen.
I have tried to create a PDF by open file through the Adobe application and also by trying to print through the Word application with document open and using Adobe PDF as the printer driver.I have changed or edited the settings but they do not appear as an option to select, just the standard default settings.
I have been able to save my setting as a Adobe PDF job options, but can't access them or use them when it comes time to convert to PDF.
Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

I have apprached it 3 different ways:
    - by opening acrobat and going to preferrences, clining on  convert to PDf
    - Microsoft Word, then changes each section of the edit settings, ie
general, fonts, images, etc make the cahneges then hit OK, at this point I
get a save as option rather than a save. It saves my changes as a PDF, but I
am not able to access it when I go to make the PDF.
    - I also have tried to print PDF from Word  and got to properties to make
the changs with the same results as above.
    - Then I tried yur suggestion and went to the printer in the control panel
    and had the same results.
I am using mircosoft word 2003 which has been compatable with my windows 8.1
I think the problem may be I am using a "trial" version of Adobe Acrotbat DC
2105 version. It must not belettingme save the setting changes. But this
shouldnot be if they want me to really experience the full effects of the
    program.

  • Acrobat won't create bookmarks from level three headings in Word 2003 doc

I’m trying to convert a series of 2003 word docs, each with three levels of headings to .pdf using Acrobat but neither Acrobat nor Word 2010 (which a friend tried for me), could produce bookmarks for heading 3.
Headings 1 and 2 are main standalone headings but Heading three has been applied to the number of each paragraph in the document (the number has been typed in manually at the start of each para) and is on the same line as the first line of text. It is separated from the text by a single tab space.  Immediately above the first line of text of each paragraph is a single line of upper case text which gives the name of the file. Normal style has been applied to both the paragraph text and the upper case file names.
    Here is how it looks;
THIS IS A QUESTION ABOUT BOOKMARKS
2          We’re so glad to have many friends that we see in the building ---too many to try to mention.  I just happened to notice, coming in the door  the man that married wife and I together.  And we’re glad to have him in with, oh, so many others.
The number “2” above is heading style 3.  All three levels of headings will produce an accurate TOC for the document so the problem seems to be that neither Acrobat nor Word 2007 can ‘find’ heading no 3 because it is set between the upper case and  paragraph text.
I’m wondering if an MS article (Q285059) I have tried to understand that refers to use of Lead-in Emphasis with Heading styles and Style Separators may provide a solution … but at this point the lingo is over my head.
I have over 1000 similar docs to convert to pdf so any suggestions that might help or even establish that what I’m trying to do is not possible will be very gratefully received.

1000 docs to convert? That's MISERABLE!
I have the same problem (on a much smaller scale) and will follow this thread to see if someone figures it out.

  • Creating a PDF from Word 2003: recommended settings for screenshot pictures without artifacts?

My Word 2003 document shows screenshots from text dialogs (some 100% and some in reduced size).
While the quality of the pictures is good in the MS Word viewer, my created PDFs show artifacts mainly at the black texts:
the single characters are eroded or dilated!
The viewing quality does not increase if I zoom in (e. g. to 200%).
I tried settings without picture compression, but there are still artifacts.
    a) I add the screenshots via copy&paste using a snipping tool (= "snagit").
Can I improve the import of pictures to Word?
    b) How can I select PDF creator settings which do not apply any compression (= original bitmap)?
Or is it the priciple of PDF to compress the pictures anyway?
    Hope for some helpful hints!

I generally just print to the Adobe PDF printer, but then I am generally not using links and such (actually I don't tend to use MS products and thus don't even have PDF Maker in my applications. However, the bookmarks and links are the most useful to a lot of folks. The tags provide the accessibility aspects and the formating information. The latter is useful if you want to try to come backwards at some point (or allow others to do that). However, it is almost always better to keep the original so you never have to come backwards. I can see the accessability aspects to be useful, particularly for universities and government organizations. For businesses, it may vary with the type of business (unless the government puts more regulations in place!).
Typically, the tags are the factor that causes the most bloat in the resultant PDF. If you use lots of different fonts and embed them (always recommended), then that creates another form of bloat. Graphics that maintain more resolution that is needed can cause a lot of problems. I used to have one student who would embed 2400 dpi graphics in word files. I had to turn off graphics viewing in word because it would crash my system (the memory leaks in MS products are some of the worst). Simply reducing the resolution to 300 dpi (or 600 dpi) helps a lot. Keep in mind that the resolution of the eye is on the order of 100 dpi. You have to start using a magnifying glass or zooming to see the higher resolution (useful in some cases, but not usually). The intermediate step in creating a PDF is to print to a PS (you do not see this step normally), the step that often causes the problem with memory (you are limited to the size of free memory allocated to the TEMP folder -- not the free memory on your hard drive). Hope that explains some of the limitations.
