Parallel port in windows NT

I am trying to use the parallel port with labview 4.1 in windows NT.
Windows NT security doesn't let me touch the parallel port, so my
application crashes every time that I run my VI.
Does any one knows how to access parallel ports in Win NT ?
Thank you very much,
Paul

Hello Paul,
Windows NT does not normally allow direct hardware access, as in
using LabVIEW's IN and OUT VIs.
The In and Out work under Win95. There is a third party tool call:
Peek/Poke 5.0 from Viewpoint. http://www.viewpointusa.com/peekpoke.html
I have use this software to control Pc hardware. The Peek/Poke software
gives you In and OUT VIs (that "get around NT security") that work under
NT.
I do not know if Peek/Poke works with LabVIEW 4.1, but I do know
that LabVIEW 5.1 does.

I have been using a HP LaserJet 4000 via a parallel port for years on a variety of machines / Operating systems without issue. • Could you help me to control a DC motor with the parallel port and windows 2000?

I have labview 5.1 and i want to control my application throught the internet

I would recommend upgrading to LabVIEW 7.0 for a couple of reasons. First, LabVIEW 6.1 introduced remote front panels which allows you to control a VI through a web browser. Setting up remote front panels is very simple and that alone is worth the upgrade. As far a using the parallel port you can use VISA to send/receive commands via the parellel port if you are using a motor controller with a parellel interface. If you are talking about using the port on a bit level to control the motor, LabVIEW 7.0 ships which an example of how to do basic digital input output with the parallel port.

  • Parallel port and labview

I am trying to control a OMHT23-400 stepper motor through a 3540M motor drive using a Moschip PCI Parallel Port. I created a program to send alternatilng pulses to the motor and rotate it a desired amount of degrees. The address of the stepper motor in my computer is I/O Range BD00-BD07. The same program worked in another computer who's parallel port address was I/O Range 0378-037F. I dont know why the program is working in the first computer and the same program wont work in this one. Thank you for your help.

    Dear Gant88,
first download and unpack accesshw.zip as instructed  (you can also unpack it to the directory where your .vi files for this projet are, thugh this is not good practice).
    I attached my write_port and my read_from_port. (LV 7.1)
In my case I wanted to write (or read) 32 bit integer from the port, for this purpose I am writing (or reading) three (data, status, control) bytes at different locations. You will figure out.
Take care not to have any printer installed (in win xp) on parallel port, because windows will do some check-ups on printer from time to time. This will interfere with your program.
    Try and let me know.
    regards.

  • Using XP software with a parallel port dongle in windows 7 professional

Please help...  Looking to have my parallel port dongle recognized for my older version software (XP) in Windows 7 under the XP PC mode.  Help in figuring out if LPT1 is set correctly or what I am doing wrong.
    Thanks

    Hello,
I have W7 Professional 64 bit with Windows Virtual PC/Windows XP Mode installed. I have some older programs installed in XP Mode and they are working properly.
Unfortunately, I have one older program that I currently have working on an older XP Machine and that program requires a Sentinel dongle to be seen on the LPT1 Parallel Port. Since my W7 computer has an LPT1 Header on the mother board, I have purchased and
installed a PCI-Express Parallel Port and I have the ribbon cable connected to the LPT1 Header.
After I enabled the parallel port in the bios, I could see LPT1 in the W7 Device Manager and in the Windows XP Mode Device Manager. However, when I click on
Windows Virtual PC, highlight Windows XP Mode.vmcx and click on Settings, LPT1 does not appear.
I have installed my old program in Windows XP Mode and it starts to run but, when it gets to the point where it must see the Sentinel dongle on the LPT1, the
program does not find the dongle.
I also purchased a Manhattan MHUSB to DB25 Parallel Converter and plugged it in. It said that it found new hardware and installed drivers for it but that didn’t
    work either.
I am not married to any particular solution. So, I would use a USB Adapter or LPT1 connected to the mother board but there must be some code editing or changes
in settings to make the dongle work in XP Mode.
Can you tell me how to get W7 Professional 64 bit with Windows Virtual PC/Windows XP Mode to find the Sentinel dongle
    on LPT1?
    Thank you,
    Dan

  • Is it possible to get direct access to parallel port pins under Windows NT? What can I do

to get such an access under NT? I found Write to Parallel Port.vi but I can`t open it. The error that occurs is:
resource not found, error occured while loading the vi, labview load error code 8: could not load vi ressources.
This vi is from 1994. Maybe the source of trouble is that I`m using version 5.1.1 or it is a problem with NT. What do you think?

Parallel Port.vi can only be used in DOS-Systems (like Win9x, WinME ;-). NT does not allow writing to parallel port with low level routines. It is more useful to use the digital port that is on most of the DAQ cards.
Some more informations on parallel ports: http://www.lvr.com/parport.htm
In general it seems to be possible. Somebody told me just to use the write port command with the address of the parallel port. Another way seems to be to tell NT to allow direct port access - but I don't know how.

  • Parallel Ports vs. Trashing Printers

Recently bought 3 new workstations:  2 w/Windows 7 - - 1 w/Windows XP Pro... Question is:  my old HP Laserjet 2100tn will not work with these computers due to their not being a paralel port on the back of the computer.
Do they make converters for the cables to make them work? Or is the printer basically worthless at this point?
    This question was solved.

You can purchase and install parallel port adapter cards and the printer will work. I can't specify which cards as you haven't stated what the specs are on your workstations. There are also usb to parallel port converter cables available.

  • How can I write to the parallel port using LabVIEW 6.0.2

I have tried updating the labview.ini file and also using the parallel.llb available on the site. When I execute the program it gives me error 37 saying,"device not found". I am running this code on windows 98. I tried to use VISA write, serial port write (using port 10) but nothing seems to work. I also tried to develop a sample code using inPort and outPort, but no success, it is not able to read the data back from the parallel port, even if it seems (????i don't know any way to cross-check it though????) to write.
Does anybody know the problem here?
    THanks.
    Pari.

    Thanks Brian.
Well here is the next problem. I got a VI (attatched) off ni.com and it works fine on a windows98 platform. But quits working on NT.
I can write perfectly (which i checked by hooking an LED display unit at the other end of the parallel port cable). I observed that the LEDs respond to the toggling of individual bits (data bits). But the error occures at the "out port.vi", when I try to run it on a NT machine (where I actually wanna use it). Are you aware of any changes to be made in order to run a VI on NT that works on 98?
    Thanks again.

  • How to Install a parallel port printer to usb port of Pavilion dv5 Notebook

In trying to install my HP DeskJet 610C Parallel Port printer to my HP Pavilion dv5-1235dx Notebook PC with Windows Vista Home Premium 64-bit, I followed instructions given by HP Support some two years back.
I connected up the two units through a Parallel-to-USB ports cable. The PC loaded and confirmed suitable driver. (Following advice from sites on the Internet, I have made repeated attempts to carefully install the printer, but to no avail).
Upon my issuing the Print instruction, the printer invariably prints two copies of what appears to be 'gibberish' in two lines at the start of the sheet. Thereafter it picks up and then ejects 6-8 sheets of blank paper.
Any help in resolving this anomalous situation will be be most welcome and much appreciated.
I might add that the printer works normally when connected in parallel to an older, Compaq Armada 1750 Notebook (XP OS). In this instance too, the Parrallel/USB worked as in the Pavilion PC, above.

    Hello,
I can open a parallel port (LPT1) using java comm api i,e javax.comm.

I choose the appropriate port(LPT1), it is in bi-directional mode according to BIOS configuration.
but according to the java program the mode is SSP.
when i write data to parallel port the volt-meter give a reading of high state for all data pin (pin1 to 9) i,e the parallel port doesnot change state. I am using windows XP.

try it on Open Solaris 10 or Linux platform.
    also just try using the new FileWriter("LPT1").write("Hello");

  • New MBA and Parallels 6 with Windows 7

Hi everyone. Can anyone tell me if they've tried the new MacBook Air with Parallels 6 and Windows 7? Any problems?
I'm seriously consideirng buying a new 13" MBA for work (which requires Windows) but want to make sure they "play nice" before I make the plunge. Any feedback would be greatly appreciated!
    Thanks,
    Keith

    Hey all!
I just thought I'd chime in! I have loaded Parallels 6 to run Windows 7 on my MacBook Pro. I had 4 GB of RAM on my MBP and found I would get some pretty slow performance when running Parallels. It all depended what I was doing. I used Office 2007 alot and Visual Studio.
I upgraded to 8 GB of RAM and it was the best Mac decision I've made since buying my MBP. I bought it from an eBay store for $120 and installed it myself... unbelievable difference!
I would like to ask, why are you choosing the MB Air? I have never really played with one but it seems very limiting - not upgradeable, basically no ports, no CD ROM.
For the same money, you can get a MUCH more powerful MBP. The MBP is pretty thin and light-weight anyway. I'm just curious what the niche for MBAs is.
Good luck with your Mac purchases... any Mac is a good Mac!
