Parallel port to usb cables

Hi guys,
I just bought a new PC for my parents (Dell Inspiron, Merry Christmas...), and realized only this morning that it doesn't have a parallel port to support their antique laser printer (which still works well).
I did a quick search and found these Parallel Port to USB cables:
http://www.tigerdirect.ca/applications/ … &CatId=471
http://www.thesourcecc.com/estore/Produ … ct=2608263
I prefer the latter because tiger direct charge way too much for shipping and there's a The Source in town here.
Will these work with Linux -- they claim its seamless, but I can imagine cups possibly getting confused if it expects a parallel port and gets USB? Any idea how they work?
Also, the printer is from 1994, will it work with a IEEE-1284 parallel port, or were they using EPP or something else back then?
I could also get a PCI parallel port adaptor, but you've probably heard my horror stories every time I open a case. ;-)
Thanks for any advice!
Dusty

I was just given an old Canon BJC-1000 printer with a parallel to USB adapter today. Cups does find the printer and will print on it. My only problem so far is that the page is shrunk down to about 1/16 of its original size! It's very funny but not real convenient.
Edit
Never mind that. It works!!! Readjusted everything in the CUPS config, restarted my application, and all is well.

  • E4200V2 Print adapter - parallel port to usb compatibility.

Currently my setup works fine except that I need another ethernet port.
I have a E4200V2 with a HP laserjet 4000N printer connected via JetDirect ethernet and I am able to print with any of my devices.
However, because I have need of another ethernet port, I am wondering if anybody has tried using a parallel to usb cable? The parallel side of the cable being connect to the printer and the usb side to the router.
Has anybody done this, or even know if it can be done?
Or if I really want that port made available, will I have to get some type of external print server?
I know that HP makes a JetDirect Card with a USB port, however, I don't want to spend the $80 on ebay to get a used one if a $10 new cable will work.

hiptechboy: "When I hear someone say that they want to use a Parallel to USB cable, I can't help but think of an HDMI to VGA cable haha. Anyways, I think that you have zero chance with a cable like that."
Sadly, I think you right. The only reason why Parallel to USB does work is because the computers can emulate a parallel port through USB. Just like the HDMI to VGA. You’re not going to go from your computers VGA port to your TVs HDMI and have things turn out the way you want them to. It only works one way. For lack of a better term I was hoping my new router would be "smart" enough to emulate a parallel port through the USB.
While I have no doubt that it is capable of doing so, the question is if the router is programed to do so without the need for me to build and load a custom ROM. Might not be a bad idea except that I doubt that there is a market to actually make that worthwhile financially. The time and effort required will go way past the $50 I’m willing to spend to make this work.
I think I will just go troll around the University Surplus store and hope to luck out on a HP JetDirect USB Card.

  • Designjet 430 Parallel port to USB port ????

I have a Designjet 430 printer (plotter) that has always been set up with a desktop computer.  I now have to set it up with a laptop computer.  I have downloaded the XP driver and all seems well there, however when I run a cable test the "toolbox" says that it is not connected (and it is).  I contacted the cable manufacturer and they said that it could be that the printer does not recognize the "virtual" parallel port and the cable is bidirectional.  Is there a way to connect the Designjet 430 to my laptop?
    Thank you in advance!

  • Laser Jet 4000 Parallel Port to USB

I have a Laser Jet 4000 that I've tried to connect to my new computer using a parallel to USB cable.  Now when I shut down Windows XP I get a Blue Screen and the computer does not shut down automatically.  Sometimes I get a message that there is a driver/device conflict.  When I disconnect the USB cable to the printer, the problem disappears.  What can I due to get the Laser Jet 4000 to work with Windows XP properly?

You could purchase and install an IEEE 1284 card on your PC, which will have a parallel port on it. This way, you can connect the printer directly to the PC. You could also install the latest drivers for the Parallel-to-USB converter and see if it helps.

  • Parallel port to USB adapter

I'm trying to connect my venerable HP2100 printer to my new imac, but without success. I got a startech adapter which allows the computer to see the printer and vice-versa, OSX loaded the driver fine, but the printing information doesn't seem to get to the printer, which produces pages of nonsense amid many blank pages. Should I use a different adapter? Other solution? Junk the old war-horse printer?
    thx, smh

    HI,
sorry to hear that it did not work! Just to clarify, this is what I did, after which OS-X installed the correct Gutenberg driver:
The parallel port on the printer can either be a 25-pin D-shaped connector or a 36-pin Centronics style connector.
The iMac’s output is the USB port.
My printer is the HP LaserJet 4L.
    Solution:
Purchased an adapter, e.g. Maplin’s A94BF USB to 25-pin Parallel Adapter, at around £15 ($20).
Googled for and downloaded the 180kb file ''usbtb-1.0.17.uni.dmg''
    1. Connected the printer via the adapter with the iMac.
    2. Added new printer in the Printer and Fax menu, selecting the driver from the drop-down list (i.e. HP LaserJet 4L – Gutenprint v.5.2.3)
    3. Install the USBTB software. When the list of the USBTB’s drivers opens, only select a driver from it if one is shown for your printer. Otherwise ‘Cancel’ that operation. The previously installed Apple driver will be ok.
My LJ4L works ok under OS-X, Windows 7 in BootCamp and Windows 7 and XP in two Parallels-5 virtual modes on the iMac.
    Good Luck

  • Unable to download using ports with usb cable after ios7 upgrade

Why doesn't the compuetr recognize other devices using usb cable to download media?

    Hi neocec!
I have a couple of suggestions for you that will help you troubleshoot this issue. First, you should try to reset the iOS device by following these instructions:
iOS: Turning off and on (restarting) and resetting
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1430
If you are still experiencing issues after attempting that troubleshooting step, you will want to restore your iOS device according to these instructions:

  • JTAG Digital Waveform transfered using USB or parallel port ?

    Hi all
I was wondering if there is a way to send JTAG Digital Waveforms generated by LabVIEW into a parallel port or USB port.  I know that there is a way to use DAQmx devices with JTAG Digital Waveforms where DAQmx drivers take JTAG Digital Waveforms and transfer that into physical signals which is then send to UUT.  I really am in a need to try to mimic whatever a DAQmx can do to make that happen with a parallel port or usb port. I would really appreciate if you can help me it is very urgent.
    Thanks

    Hi Cristopher
I do really appreciate for a quick response. I am full aware of the fact that NI products for digital waveform generation will do the job, plus it is easier to implement them. However my goal is to use an inexpensive device that can generate external timing and my JTAG library and make .exe files from my final code and distribute that setup for several computers in factory. So buying several digital waveform generators from NI for each PC in factory will be a very expensive option. I think now you have a better picture why I am trying to find another inexpensive way to implement these digital waveforms using JTAG library. It would be ideal if I can use parallel port with some external timing to do the trick but I am really not sure where to start. Cirstopher I would really appreciate if you can come up with any suggestions in regards to this problem that I am having.
    Thanks again.

  • Trouble connecting playbook to windows PC when using AVG Internet Security and USB cable ?

I have spent ages trying to get my PC (windows 7 64bit ) to talk to the Playbook. I found the following:
Windows device manager sees the playbook and will let me back up and restore but not to see the files on the Playbook. Desktop software says problem with connection. On the "computer" window it shows drives but not the Playbook. Only hard drive and DVD drives. Looks like AVG is blocking the USB and as yet they have not come up with a solution and latest software wont let you manually configure the firewall other than allow and block (previous versions allowed you to config inbound and outbound rules)
Elsewhere on the forums a solution was provided but it meant leaving the firewall set to "off" or "allow all" which really is a waste of time having a firewall at all.
Please try this and see if it resolves your problems, It sorted it for me !
    Remove AVG Internet Security 2014
Load AVG antivirus 2014 ( freeware) so now you are OK for antivirus protection
Load Microsoft Security Essentials (freeware) so now you are  OK for firewall protection
Playbook now talks and can be configured, also the contents of the playbook drive can be seen alongside your PC drives and DVD drives in the "computer" window of your PC  The playbook drive has now been allowed to be mounted where as it was blocked before
I know how frustrating this can be I have spent ages on it ..so give it a try

The USB-parallel cable needs a driver that supports Windows 7 x64 in addition to the driver the printer needs.  Additionally make sure the port settings are correct, usually the port will be something like USB001: or USB002: for the USB-parallel port. Some cables may provide a virtual LPT port such as LPT3:.  Check the documentation for your unit for details.
The posts here list models of USB-parallel ports folks here have had success with in Windows 7.

  • How to Install a parallel port printer to usb port of Pavilion dv5 Notebook

In trying to install my HP DeskJet 610C Parallel Port printer to my HP Pavilion dv5-1235dx Notebook PC with Windows Vista Home Premium 64-bit, I followed instructions given by HP Support some two years back.
I connected up the two units through a Parallel-to-USB ports cable. The PC loaded and confirmed suitable driver. (Following advice from sites on the Internet, I have made repeated attempts to carefully install the printer, but to no avail).
Upon my issuing the Print instruction, the printer invariably prints two copies of what appears to be 'gibberish' in two lines at the start of the sheet. Thereafter it picks up and then ejects 6-8 sheets of blank paper.
Any help in resolving this anomalous situation will be be most welcome and much appreciated.
I might add that the printer works normally when connected in parallel to an older, Compaq Armada 1750 Notebook (XP OS). In this instance too, the Parrallel/USB worked as in the Pavilion PC, above.
    This question was solved.

  • Parallel Printers using USB converter cable?

    Hi,
I have a HP Laserjet 6L printer, which only has a parallel port on it. I can successfully use a parallel-usb cable to attach it to my imac, this works fine. But when I attach it to my AE, it isn't detecting.
    Should this work?
    Thanks
    Chris

Wait a minute! It's only certain Indesign documents that won't print.
    All TextEdit docs will print.
I created a few scribbles in Photoshop and they print.
But with InDesign, there is no predicting which documents will print or will not print. On some that will not print, if I remove all but one text box, then they will print. On other documents that do print, if I copy some text off of one that won't print and paste it in, then that one stops printing too.
On some that won't print, if I erase everything on the page and create a new text box and type a few words into it, the page will print. If I revert to the previously saved version, once again the page won't print.
What kind of craziness is this, anyway? It seems random. I can't figure it out.
Even on the documents that won't print, when I try to print them the printer's activity light blinks as though it is just about to print, but then the light goes out without printing.
Anybody got any ideas what this problem is and how to fix it?
All I know is that EVERYTHING printed before I upgraded from 10.3.9 to 10.4.9.

  • Setup Laserjet 4050 with Parallel to USB cable on new computer (win 8.1)

I am trying to setup my old Laserjet 4050 on my new Windows 8.1 (64bit) computer.  I have gotten a parallel to USB cable and tried to download the latest drivers but the it is not identifing the printer (doesn't show up in the "printers" section of the control pannel).  Help - any suggestions as to how to get it set up would be appreciated.  I love this printer (it has worked for 6 years without a problem).

Plug the ethernet cable into the jet direct card and the other end into the router. Now turn on the printer while holding down the green button until you see cold reset in the display and release the green button. When the printer comes to ready, wait about 2 minutes and then go to the information menu on the printer and print a configuration page. You will get 2 pages with the second page being the network settings. You use the ip address it found to load the printer on the computer. You will go to add printer, next, local printer, next and at the bottom will be a create port item. Click on it and in the drop down choose standard tcp/ip printer and then follow the prompts on the screen. When you get to the makers page choose hp on the left and then any laserjet pcl5 or postscript driver and finish up and it should work. Good Luck.

  • USB to Parallel Port connector plug for printer

    Hi
I'm trying to get an old IBM laster printer (4019) to work with an ibook G4--I have downloaded the Gutenprint driver which is supposedly compatable but now I need advice on adapting cables for printers. I was going to buy a Sabrent USB to Parallel port connector but saw in the feedback that many people weer unhappy with it. Could somebody suggest the best USB to Parallel port connecting cable for me and where to order it? thanks very much.
