Parallel printer to iMac or Time Capsule

We just traded in an old PC for a new iMac running Lion.  We still have an old HP laserjet 4L that has been a trouble free workhorse, and would like to keep it if possible.  It only has one output, a standard parallel printer cable.  Is there a way to connect it?  I have read some reviews of adapter cables from Belkin and Cables to Go, and they are definitely mixed on this topic; also none of them referred to Lion as the OS (most seemed to be Tiger or earlier).
We could connect either directly to the iMac or to our Time Capsule.
Note I am most definitely NOT any kind of networking expert -- so keep it simple, please!
Thanks.

Is the HP printer connected to the Time Capsule by USB or Ethernet? If by USB, the Time Capsule's USB port does not support the "advanced" features (copying, scanning, & faxing) of multi-function printers ... regardless of the network client's operating system.
If connect by Ethernet, you will need the appropriate printer drivers from the manufacturer.

You might consider restoring to factory specs, as detailed in the booklet that shipped witht the machine, using the Setup Assistant on first boot, and then reinstalling those new programs. i've not moved pictures, so you could always give that a shot.

  • I used an ethernet cable between my iMac and Time Capsule for the initial backup.  Now that initial backup is concluded, can I simply unplug the Time Capsule from my computer?

I used an ethernet cable between my iMac and Time Capsule for the initial backup.  Now that initial backup is concluded, can I assume I can simply unplug the Time Capsule from my computer without any glitches and Time Capsule will then run wirelessly.  Is this assumption correct?

can I assume I can simply unplug the Time Capsule from my computer without any glitches and Time Capsule will then run wirelessly.  Is this assumption correct?
Yes, if the computer will be able to receive a strong wireless signal from the Time Capsule.
I did not disable wireless.  So I assume the backups are occurring both with the ethernet and wirelessly.
It is inot possible to have both an "active" Ethernet and "active" wireless signal simultaneously. If an Ethernet connection is established, your computer will default to the Ethernet connection. If the Ethernet cable is unplugged, the computer will revert to the wireless connection.
I also show 2 wireless networks available through Airport.  Shouldn't there only be one now?
You have a simultaneous dual band Time Capsule. That means that it will always be providing both a 2.4 GHz and a 5 GHz network.
I named my new network the same name as the old network.  This enabled all of our devices to continue with their connection without entering the new network and/or passwords; however, I am afraid this may pose problems in the future somehow.  Any input on this issue as well?
Things should be fine. Devices will connect to the best signal.....either 2.4 GHz or 5 GHz....based on their capabilties and location in relation to the Time Capsule.

  • Flashing question mark folder when start iMac after Time Capsule performed a new back up

I switched my iMac on after a few days away and I was asked to start a new back up for Time Capsule to enhance the performance of the device (or something along those lines). Clicked the back up now and carried on, having read the process could take a few hours (not surprising because of the amount of data on my computer).
Left it running overnight and when I came back this morning the computer was off.  Switched it on, saw the apple logo and the progress bar but it didn't move past 25% before I had a message in several languages to turn the computer off (and some script in the top left corner.  From memory I think I saw <panic> in that script but not 100% sure).
When I switched it back on I had the dreadful flashing question mark so performed steps described in support.apple.com/kb/ts1440 several times and performed a safe Boot.  No results.
I haven't reinstalled Mac OS X (step 11 in ts1440) as I don't want to erase the hard drive.
I have plugged the Time Capsule in a MacBook and it seems empty bar 2 very small files so I'm now very worried.  I have some questions:
1- I'm not a technical person so is this now a case of bringing the iMac and Time Capsule to an Apple shop or call Apple support when they reopen tomorrow Monday?
2 - Is my data wiped out in the iMac and Time Capsule? If yes is it recoverable - obviously not by me but by an expert?
3 - what created the problem?  My Lightroom 3 catalog was corrupted 3-4 times over the last few weeks and was surprised that Time Capsule wanted to perform a new back up but everything otherwise was working fine.
I'm very much looking forward to your help and suggestions.

You have a couple of options and I also have a suggestion for the future. First is you can try Data Rescue software. You can find it at:
    http://www.prosofteng.com/products/data_rescue.php
The other is sending the HD out to a professional data recovery service.
My suggestion though is using a redundant backup system. Many on this forum do just that because a backup (as you have found out) can fail too. What I use is TM and on a separate EHD I created a bootable clone using SuperDuper. You can use SuperDuper or Carbon Copy Cloner for this. I'd recommend reading the following MacWorld articles for backup strategies. I think you'll see a recurring them in them and that is redundancy is wise.
    Backup Plan
    Backup Plan II
    Backup Plan III
Also it wasn't a virus, you are correct there are none for OS X.
    Good luck on the recovery.

  • HP Laserjet Printer not available in Time Capsule settings

I have an HP Laserjet P1005 printer; very basic stuff. I had previously set it up so that it was connected to my Time Capsule. There were a few issues (I had to connect my MacBook Pro to the Time Capsule via LAN cable for the printing jobs to actually print) but I could use the printer.
I have recently moved offices which required disconnecting everything including my TC. Again, nothing unusual here and when I connected everything in I got back to work no problem. However, I can no longer use the printer (not even when I connect my laptop directly to the TC. I've gone into the TC settings to see that there is no printer linked to the TC. I've tried many times to set up a new printer in my preferences, but when I try to manually change the settings through Airport Utilities there is no printer available for me to choose.
Am I setting up the printer incorrectly? Maybe someone can help me set up the printer so that it comes up when I open Airport Utilities? And why do I always need to connect my laptop to the TC when I want to print; is it because the printer is pretty basic and can't link this way?
Any help will be greatly appreciated!
    Andrew

I'm not sure if the following will help but here goes.  I have two printers on my time capsule---A Brother multifunction that I have had on for about 2 1/2 years and recently added a HP Deskjet(both on USB). I first installed the printer directly to my iMac to make sure that I have no printer driver issues etc.  Then I plugged the two printers into a USB switch(forgot to turn the HP printer on).. Then I figured my problem out.  Printers only show up in the Airport utility if they are turned ON.
    May be this will help.

  • Printing Wireless (HP) with Time Capsule

I have attached my HP Officejet 5610 via USB to the USB port on the back of the Time Capsule- I add the printer and delete the old one (when it was attached directly to IMac via USB). I keep getting error message saying "cannot connect to server.... HP etc etc etc".. help??

    paceman,
Your printer is not on the HP list.
    http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?docname=c00035369&lc=en&cc=us&dlc=en &product=391182&rule=44221&lang=en
This doesn't mean it won't work.
I would try hooking up the printer to the TC and then deleting all your printers in the Print & Fax preference pane.
    Restart your computer.
And then add the printer back in if it show up.

  • Share internet connection through iMac with Time Capsule

I have a scenario at work where I need to temporarily set another router as the DHCP server. I have a customer who has a typical office setup. They have an iMac which is plugged into a time capsule (TC). A network printer is also plugged into the same time capsule. I have had to move the WAN modem to where the wifi router is located in another room. The office needs to be able to connect to the new WIFI network while still having the network printer work. If I setup TC to "join another network" and put into bridge mode, I can no longer communicate with network printer. Can I choose "share internet" in OSX system preferences> Sharing on iMac, connect wirelessly through iMac and have TC function as a simple network switch somehow while being able to communicate with printer.
    Thanks

First, before I get into too much detail: Is it even possible to set up a WPA2 network directly from the iMac without a separate router?
    Welcome to Apple's discussion groups.
Despite the fact that WPA2 encryption has existed for years, Apple hasn't seen fit to include that option in its "Internet sharing" feature.

  • How can I print via the AirPort Time Capsule on a Windows 7?

    Hey,
First of all, I am really inexperienced about all these things. I have a MacBook from 2009 with OSX Lion and a PC Windows 7 x64. I have got a time capsule (https://www.mikepalmer.net/wp-content/uploads/2011/12/apple-time-capsule.jpg) connected to my router
and then another router in my room (probably working as an acces point) to which I  wirelessly connect my Windows 7.
The thing is that I can see the printer (HP Laserjet P1005) from my Mac but I don't know how to add it to my windows. On a previous PC I added a printer to the time capsule's IP 192.168.1.2 and printed with a considerable delay that way.
As you can see I don't understand how networks work, how IP's work, or how ports work in this matter.
Any help will be much appreciated!!

    Hi PGMLEBL,
I am not familiar with Mac product, the best way is ask the HP printer support for the detail support, generally if we know the printer IP address we can add it through add
a network printer, you may can refer the following third party article to add the printer:

  • Transfer files from dead iMac G5 to new iMac via Time Capsule

Hello, I just purchase the latest iMac. Just in time, as my iMac G5 died. It no longer starts up. I get a gray screen and the fans going full bore. Not a big deal since I also have Time Capsule and it has been faithfully backing up my G5.
My new iMac is up and running but I can't access my files on Time Cpasule. I access the drive via Wi-Fi. I get an error "Warning - Resource temporarily unavailable". Time Capsule shows up under the Shared Drives, I see the sparsebundle, double click and that's when I get the warning.
Is it because I'm trying to access the file via Wi-Fi? Do I need a USB to USB connector(which are hard to find)? I haven't called Apple Care yet, but I got to gain access to my old G5 files.
    Thanks,
    Mark

It is not possible to use usb cable to access files..
I am not sure why the wireless access is failing.. how old is the TC?
Let me suggest you pull the TC from the network.. plug it into the computer by ethernet.. then hold down reset.. that will not cause any data loss on the drive.. but will reset the TC to default.. then see if you can access the old backup via the ethernet.
    Read Q14-17 here. http://pondini.org/TM/FAQ.html
Note carefully about transferring files from a different Mac.
If you end up unable to do it.. have the hard disk removed from the old G5 imac as that may still work.

  • Connect cheap tv to imac via time capsule?

I have an iMac connecting to the internet with an airport express (not an ethernet cable).  I would like to upgrade the airport to a time capsule, and to stream video from the iMac to a cheap TV. I am hoping the TV can function as a second monitor, connected directly to time capsule. Possible? I don't want to have to buy Apple TV- seems like a lot for a little.
The goal here is to watch video in another part of the living room as cheaply as possible.
    Thanks!

No I don't think this will work.. you can run the TV directly from the Mac.. via hdmi connection but not over network without something to translate airplay to the TV. Just get a long hdmi cable.

  • How to get the IP address of printer USB attached to Time Capsule?

I'm trying to work a printing problem with my HP7310 Officejet and VMware's Fusion 2.0.3. I'm on Mac OS 10.5.5.
One of the first diagnostic steps for Fusion is to ping the IP address printer. If I open the Print & Fax dialog from System Preferences I can see the name of my printer, let's say it's called "foo bar". I then open a bash terminal and type: ping "foo bar", but get an "unknown host" message.
I can ping the Time Capsule itself by getting the IP address from Airport Utility. The printer "foo bar" shows properly in the Airport Utility Printers dialog.
    Anyone have any suggestions?

If you open AirPort Utility > Manual Setup > Advanced > Logs & Statistics > DHCP clients, a list of the devices will be displayed with their IP addresses. Make note of these.
You will have to get the IP for your printer by process of elimination. Go to
System Preferences > Network to see your ethernet and wireless connections and associated IPs. You should be able to narrow the list down to identify your printer.

  • Has ANYONE got a printer to work on Time Capsule network?

I've tried two different printers and neither work with Time Capsule.  I've checked this community and most state they cannot get the printer to work.  Is there any secret to get this working.  I just bought Time Capsule and I bought it mainly for printer to work on network.  Is this just ANOTHER feature that Apple claims to work. . . but it doesn't?

Did you actually "install" the printer when it was connected to the USB port on the Time Capsule?
By that, I mean.....follow the steps (Page 17-18) in the Setup Manual for the Time Capsule?
Connect the printer to the USB port on the Time Capsule and power it up
Open System Preferences (gear icon on the dock)
    Open Print & Scan
Click the + (plus) button at the bottom of the printer list on the left
If your printer is supported, it's name or a similar model will appear in the next window
Click the name of the printer to highlight it
Click Add at the lower right
    Try to print
You have to select the correct printer "location". If you previously installed the printer when it was connected to your Mac, it will appear as if you have two of the same printers.
A closer inspection will reveal that one is located at the Mac and the other is located at the Time Capsule.
You have to chose the correct "location" at the Time Capsule. You may need to restart the printer as well.
    Most printers will work.
But, if you have an All-in-One type device.....only the print function will work. Other functions like scan, copy, maintenance, etc are not supported.
That's not Apple's fault. The printer manufacturers have not provided full function drivers for network USB connections.
If you have an All-in-One, or are shopping for one, you need a "network" device as LaPastenague mentions. If the All-in-One connects using wireless only, or using Ethernet, you will have full functionality over the network.

  • We bought a reconditioned IMac and time capsule, about a month ago the hard drive died and only left our files on the capsule which could not be retrieved from the time capsule so it got stored as a file on the operating system

Our IMac's hard drive died and we thought great we bought a time capsule to back up the immages and files, except when we had the hard drive replaced the time capsule did not recognize the newer opperating system and would not reboot the files back,so the apple store tech loaded them into a file folder and loaded them to the main screen and erased the time capsule, the problem now is how to load this file back permenantly and watch video's that are stored, when in I Photo when I try to view video content I get a message stating that I may need to download more software to support this format.

If anyone is reading this still looking for what caused the issue and how to fix it here is what I discovered.
The antivirus program our company uses, Bitdefender Antivirus Plus, was causing some of the PDF files not to open. After troubleshooting the different modules and settings the culprit was..
Scan SSL in Privacy Control Settings. Turning it OFF solved the problem and all the PDF files that previously would not open now open just fine. This issue has been sent to Bitdefender for them to review. If you use a different antivirus program and are having this issue try locating the Scan SSL setting and see if turning it off solves the problem.

  • IMac G4 + Time Capsule

First off, I'd like to say hello to fellow board users, and thanks in advance for any answers.
I've been looking into buying a Time Capsule to create a Wi-Fi netwrk for use on both my computer and gaming console, but unfortunately I have an old iMac G4 from 2001-ish (possibly 2002) that does not have an AirPort card. I was wondering if it is possible to hook up the computer to Time Capsule simply by using a USB or Ethernet cord, or if it is compatible at all.
    Thanks again.

The Time Capsule has three Ethernet ports intended for use with a computer.
