Parallels and Windows 7

I just recently bought a new iMac and i'm thrilled with it, but I'm going through the PC to Mac growing pains. I bought Parallels 5 and Windows 7 in order to run programs from work and also to play some games. I loaded Parallels with no problems, but when I loaded Windows it opens with terrible graphics. Did I load it wrong? What am I doing wrong? I'm about ready to pull my hair out in sheer frustration.

What's terrible? You need to be more specific. A VM is not going to be able to display graphics like a native system. If you are trying to run some game or intensive 3D application, you aren't going to like the results.
You also need to be aware of your RAM allocations. You need RAM to run another OS along side the MacOS - and lots of it. How much RAM do you have? If you are running Windows 7 with anything less than 4 GB, you aren't going to like the results.
That is just for your Mac's RAM. You also need to be aware how much RAM you give Windows. Under XP, I could run in a VM giving Windows as little as 256 MB or 512 MB RAM. If you give Windows too much RAM, it will cause too much virtual memory activity on the Mac side, slowing it down, which, in turn, will slow the VM way down. Windows 7 is newer, flashier, and hungrier. It seems to run fine for me in Parallels 5 with it's RAM allocation set at 1 GB. I have 4 GB of Macintosh RAM.

  • Can login to Xmarks on Mac, 10.6.4, no problem, but running parallels and windows XP and Firefox on that, I can't login to Xmarks since it won't accept my password, and I'm asking who to contact to fix this problem with Xmarks?

If the question had been asked before, I would have read the answer. Can you make this support any more useless?
I'm trying to run Firefox on a Mac with Parallels and Windows XP. I can use Firefox, that's fine, what I can't do is sync my bookmarks. They are all synced on both macs, and my old PC, a really slow Dell L110, thus trying to use Parellels. Is there any way to contact someone who can look at why my log in to Xmarks won't work on Parallels? Or if there is a support page somewhere where one can actually get some answers, please let me know. Thanks, Rob Rand

Same issue - however firefox will open but I can not click on only of my tool bar shortcuts - the writing on the google age is greyed out so I can not click on anything. Still no resolution? I have deleted the folders and re-installed - it will open and then locks and it will not work????

Help, I installed parallel and windows, and opened videos (on an external hard disk) with windows, and now cannot open them with Mac, and use i movies.  How do I reverse this?

Paragraphs help the reader, just saying.
What are you actually trying to do? Why do you need "DVD size" folders if you're creatng an Archive on an external hard drive?
Also, I understand burning folders instead of individual photos or albums gives you more space on a DVD.
It makes no difference at all.
How can I keep the captions on my photos (not events) when I print or transfer to a new folder?
You can export while writing the metadata to the file in most cases.
Tne only way I know is to copy photos from the Windows to folders on my HD, then copy and paste photos or albums or events to HD, then create a new folder and fill it to the appropriate DVD size.
HD? Another HD? You use HD there in a way that makes no sense. What's the point of 'DVD size'?
I also thought I should download future photos to my Canon programming that comes with EOS cameras and edit and then decide which photos to save to iPhoto library and which to save only to my archival HD?
Does this have any relation to the previous questions? You know you can delete from iPhoto, right?
You're somewhat confused and you need to
    1. Decide what exactly you want to do
    2. Then go about it.
If I understand you correctly - and there's no guarantee that I do -  the easiest thing is to bring all your Photos into iPhoto and do everything from there.
You can have an archive on an external disk, you can sort and select and edit with or via iPhoto

Setup Assistant and Migration Assistant do not restore MS Windows, it only does the OS X partition. All of your Windows stuff must be backed up and restore using a MS Windows application. If no one on this forum is able to answer your question then I'd repost it on a Parallels forum to see how other Windows users approach this.

  • I have an iMac which I had loaded Parallels and Windows 7.  I recently uninstalled both programs. How can I delete all related files?  Is there a program that will find related files and delete them?

I have an iMac on which I had installed Parallels and Windows 7 so I could some of the creativity software I was used to. I recently uninstalled both Parallels and Windows. How can I clean up my hard drive by making sure stray files from those programs have all been deleted?

If you followed these steps to uninstall Parallels (you simply drag Parallels to the Trash), that's all. Parallels is a quite clean application that does not create a lot of files in different folders.
However, you may still have the virtual machines you created in Documents folder. If you want to remove them, open a Finder window, select Documents in the sidebar and remove the Parallels folder

  • How do I stop parallels and windows 7 preventing me from installing office for mac 2011 on my new iMac?

I am trying to install office for mac 2011 on my new imac which I have already installed parallels and windows 7.  On inserting the office dvd the computer defaults to windows.  Parallels support suggested disabling the dvd drive in parallels.  I have tried this but still the computer wants to open the exe file with windows.  Any ideas please?

  • Trying to install on MacBookPro with Parallels and Windows 8.1. Downloaded the CreativeCloud.exe but says I can't install from network drive

I sometimes like to use Photoshop CC and Lightroom on the Windows side of my MacBookPro with Parallels. I had to reinstall Parallels and also Windows 8.1 recently and am trying to reinstall some of the software that I had previously on the Windows side. I downloaded the CreativeCloud.exe program and when I try to install it from the Windows side, get a message that I can't install Creative Cloud from a network drive. Where can I put the CreativeCloud.exe so I can install it?
    Thanks!

You probably need to check your drive setup for the Parallels environment. Nothing to do with Adobe.

  • Resolve trouble between Parallels and Windows under Boot Camp

After seeing several threads relating to this issue, I decided to make this it's own thread instead of trying to reply to each. hopkinsvscloudlivestream.blogspot.com/2013/03/watch-hopkins-vs-cloud-live-stream-2013.html This article NOW resolves all issues pertaining to using Windows under Boot Camp through Parallels, INCLUDING activation. Hopefully Parallels will be able to integrate these fixes into a future release.
Before doing anything, I would recommend preparing your existing Windows installation under Boot Camp, for Parallels, before trying to access it through Parallels. If you have already installed Parallels and now have problems, don't worry, this article should address and resolve these issues as well.
Something to know upfront: using your existing Boot Camp installation with Parallels will most likely require you to activate your Windows installation a second time. The reasons for this are addressed in Section 4 of this article.
Section 1: Preparing your Boot Camp Installation for Parallels
(If you already tried to access your Boot Camp installation through Parallels, and can no longer get into Windows through Boot Camp or Parallels, please skip this step and come back to it after you have completed Section 2.)

Personally, I think the software fix is a band-aid for a larger hardware problem, probably involving the power management circuitry. I think the reason Photo Booth and QuietMBP and Windows XP all work to silence the noise is because they draw more power by using more CPU, and it's the extra power draw that kills the noise. Nothing scientific, mind you, just a hunch.
What if your speakers made an annoying hum that went away whenever you started playing music through them in iTunes? Would you still think it's a software problem? I think it's a similar situation here - where software can cover up the issue but not really fix it...

  • Uninstalling Parallels and Windows XP!??! help please!

ok so i want to uninstall parallels and also windows XP. so my question is do i just drag and drop Parallels into the trash and that will uninstall it or are there some steps i should be doing first please help!!

Drag the parallels icon in the application folder to the trash to get rid of the app and also delete the parallels folder under /Users/<your user name>/Library/. This is the default location where the disk images are stored when you created them.

    Hi zenieth,
Welcome to the Apple Support Community!
I know that issues with the system sound, especially when watching video or listening to a song, can be very frustrating. In this situation I would recommend resetting the PRAM. Please use the attached article for instructions.

  • OSX Lion can't find CD after I installed Parallels and Windows 7

I have a 2011 macbook running Lion, Parallels 4 and Windows 7.  Now when I put in a disk, windows hijacks it with windows media player, and the disk doesn't show up in iTunes for Mac.  Is there a setting to make OSX find the cd first?

    Hi 10sMan,
It sounds like you may have a device filter causing you to see that issue.  I recommend this article to help troubleshoot not being able to find the CD burner:

How to I remove xp from my imac, delete the partition and remove parallels and all windows based programs?

  • Parallels and Windows ME?

I have a web based game that will only run on windows and I only have a copy of ME. The web game is compatibile with older versions of windows. Would this work? I do need to access the internet however

Boot Camp and Parallels are simply methods of running Windows on your Mac hardware. Boot Camp is still in beta and Parallels has been released as a commercial product, which means you'll get support from the Parallels folks only.
You'll still have the same issues with Windows regardless of whether its running on a Mac system or non-Mac system. Since both products have been highly touted by folks who have actually used them and both have extensive user forums for self-support I would suggest that your odds of safely doing what you want to accomplish are good so long as you keep you system fully patched, firewalled and protected with antivirus software.

  • Isight with parallel and windows

Can the built in isight camera be used with windows through parallel?
    thanks
    whales

    Found this.
"I saw that you introduced iSight support for Windows in the most recent RC. When I click on it in the USB menu, it doesn't load. How do I get that working?
    - Anonymous
Yes, its true that we're introducing iSight support into the Update, which should be released in its final form in the next few weeks. Below you'll see how to get your iSight camera working in Windows.
Please keep in mind before you try this that this is BETA SOFTWARE, and that there are still occasional bugs. Back up your virtual machine before upgrading to the Update Release Candidate. You can always go back to build 1970 and reconnect that image if you'd like.
    1) Make sure that you're working with the most recent build of the Parallels Desktop for Mac Update
    2) Install Mac Drivers for Windows into your guest OS:
    3) Reboot when prompted.
    4) Connect iSight as a USB device to Parallels Desktop. You'll find it labeled as "Built-In iSight" in the USB menu.
    5) Wait a bit while it is installed.
    6) Go to My Computer and see the Apple Built-In iSight shortcut. Double-click it. Enjoy your face "

  • OSX Server w/ Parallels and Windows 7

I want to run a specific remote access Windows software on my iMac running OSX Server and Parallels. If the software is installed in Windows, will the OSX Server allow remote access to it?
Altenately, can I install a Windows server (w/ IIS) on the Windows virtual machine?
    TIA

Yes to both.  Just make sure you are not bridging the address from the Mac.  Allow the VM instance to have its own IP address.  And the remote access software (like RDC) will give you access to the Windows OS but not the Mac.  You can use ARD to control the Mac and thus see the Window instance also.
