Parallels, bootcamp install question.

I currently have parallels running on my macbook is osx. Question, can I still install bootcamp and have xp on partitioned drive. The reason I would like to do this is in case I want to play some games I can boot into bootcamp, plus it would allow computer to run cooler. I would like to leave parallels on osx partitioned drive to use xp to use Internet Explorer for work! Is this possible.

the new parallels beta lets you run windows from a bootcamp windows install. (so you don't have to have windows installed twice.)

2011 MacBook Pro, 64 bit i7 quad core, upgraded to Lion OSx, Bootcamp installed with Windows 7, wanting to install Windows 8 (don't ask), tried downloading/installing bootcamp 5.0.5033 (both on the mac/windows partitions (actually using a parallel to run Windows)), error message something similar to bootcamp doesn't support this Windows
So the question is am I doing something wrong? Should I just try and install windows 8 through my windows 7 partition and see if I can use the bootcamp 5.05033. Or do I solely have to use the bootcamp to install Windows 8? I'm not too familiar with bootcamp and how it runs.

if you're using parallels and full bootcamp then you're making it 100% more troublesome for youself then it needs to be
bootcamp is running windows directly on the hardware this give full memory and cpu and 3d video game power
running windows in parallels is running a virtual machine where one can't run powerful games and the like but one can have it in a window and change fast between osx and windows
parallels as the only virutal machine (as far as I know) support not have the operating system as a file on the osx harddisk but can access a bootcamp parition as virtual machine but without the benefits bootcamps provides
it's a service parallels provide for those who want both to play games in normal bootcamp and sometimes use windows in a virutal machine
just install it like a normal virtual machine and you need not worry about bootcamp drivers and the likes
plus it would mean that the windows part would be a part of the timemachine bacup of osx
which it is not when it's in bootcamp

  • Parallels + Bootcamp = Problem/ Please Help me

    Hey,
I am using an external Firewire drive, because my internal is damaged. So I was not able to install windows xp through bootcamp (Bootable device Error).
So what I did is, I made a Bootcamp Partition and I set up Parallels to install Windows on the Bootcamp Partition.
Everything works fine. Installer shows up, I reformat using NTFS Quick Format, and then it copies the install files, and then The Virtual Computer Reboots. But after Rebooting, not the normal installer shows up, but the installation screen from the beginning where I can format my partitions and hard drives -- again.
What is the problem here? Can Anybody help me on that?
    I am using Parallels 3.0.
    Thanks in advice.

    Hi
You should make a mapping for the service sapmsPRD in your /etc/services file (On Windows: C:WINDOWSSYSTEM32DRIVERSETCservices). If your instance number is 00 you will have to add the following entry:
    sapmsPRD      3600/tcp
    Good luck!

Pavilion p6-2117c won't get past the splash screen with a pci express parallel card installed.  I take the card out and the machine works just fine.  The screen says press "esc" for startup menu but nothing happens.

Take a careful look at the slot and see if any of the pins are broken or smashed to the bottom of the slot.  Do you have another pci slot to try or just the one?

  • Simple Answer - Will upgrading to Lion Break my Bootcamp Install?

I'm running Snow Leopard. I have an IMac with a 1TB Drive - I have 800Gig for Mac and 200 Gig Partioned for Windows through Bootcamp(Win 7)
I want to download and upgrade my Mac OS to Lion. I've read through a ton of posts on issues to do with reinstalls etc; but I jut need to know if I upgrade to Lion, will I also have to redo my Bootcamp as well?
    I plan to back up everything anyway, but I'd prefer not to have to reinstall all the Windows programs I use etc;
I'm not a tech geek so I'm just trying to figure out how complicated this install would be. If I didn't have bootcamp, I'd just do it, but getting Bootcamp installed and running the first time was a chore and I don't want to have to do it again, especially now that I have a Windows partition full of programs and data.
    Thanks,
    Tom

Thanks for this. Makes perfect sense and this is the type of answer I was looking for. I could simply move a bunch of data off the MAc Paritition to make sure that there is enough HD Space. Looking at it now I have 188Gigs Free so I should be ok.
The other question would be, I have Bootcamp 3.02 now I think. I would have to upgrade this to 4.0 with Lion as I understand it? This would have to be done after the Lion upgrade?
Thanks so much for the help.
    Tom

  • Can no longer boot to MacOSX after bootcamp install

Hello all, I have an issue to where I can no longer boot into the Mac OSX partition after what appears to be a failed Windows bootcamp install. As I was running the bootcamp assistant process, a reboot occurred and I was greeted with the "No bootable device -- insert boot disk and press any key". I have no idea how to get past this and boot back to OSX.
    Things I have tried:
Holding down the "option" key does nothing, even using a USB keyboard
Resetting PRAM (CMD + OPT + P + R) does nothing, even with USB keyboard
I have put in a MAC OSX 10.7 Disk and cannot boot to disk using CMD + C on startup
I also pulled the hard drive out and connected it to another PC and wiped the drive completely. I put it back in the macbook and I am still presented with this error. It seems, even though I get the Mac startup tone, that it is stuck in which ever OS it tried to run previously, that being Windows. Not sure why I am still receiving this error even after wiping the drive completely clean.
As far as hardware goes, I am pretty sure its a late 2010 Alumn. Macbook Pro. I cant get the current model number since I cant boot the OS. Any help is appreciated.

    Please reset SMC as well.
You can get the serial number from the back cover and use https://selfsolve.apple.com/agreementWarrantyDynamic.do to find the model.

  • Help! 13" macbook pro will not boot.  Tried running disk repair from HD recovery, not repairable.  Trying to reinstall OSx Lion, says disc is locked.  Do I have to erase the drive and lose everything?  I also have Bootcamp installed, will boot to Win OK

Tried running disk repair from HD recovery, not repairable.  Trying to reinstall OSx Lion, says disc is locked.  Do I have to erase the drive and lose everything?  I also have Bootcamp installed, will boot to Windows no problem.

    Hotrodmkviii,
try rebooting in Recovery mode, but when you reach the Mac OS X Utilities menu, run Terminal (from Utilities in the menu bar) instead. Inside the Terminal window, give it the following command, and then press the Return key:
    diskutil list
Please include in your reply the output from that command.

    zwalk,
Welcome to Apple Discussions. I know you are new here so let me help steer you to a forum where you might get the answers you are looking for. This is a generalized MBP forum, I think you will get more answers by re-posting on a Bootcamp forum which you can locate:
    http://discussions.apple.com/category.jspa?categoryID=237
Look over the various forums then choose one that comes closest to your needs which to me sounds like an installation issue.

does latest version of bootcamp installed on late 2013 rMBP put thunderbolt drivers for lacie external thunderbolt/USB 3.0 drive?
I am wiping my current windows bootcamp partition and reinstalling windows using disk utility /bootcamp wizard to clean up and reinstall.
just curious if the Thunderbolt drivers get installed from bootcamp/windows sofytware update as I can't remember iif i had to do it manually before. I do see it shows up on windows side in device manager and if it is pluggged in during boot screen (to windows 7 pro 64 bit) shows ASMedia drivers being loaded for it.
    Thanks

thank you so much I was pretty sure it did but wanted to be 100% sure as purpose of clean install was to clean up some mishaps I did with office 2007 (custom install), etc.
    Many Thanks

  • Free download, and install question

    Free download, and install question.
I need to buy a larger h/d, but till then I would like to put as many programs as possible on a external usb drive that I have hooked up to my PC.  I've been able to do this with some other programs, and would like to try it with my Adobe Reader and Flash.  When down loading and installing it does not give me the option to install in a defferent location other then my C: drive.  Can this be done?  Thanks you?

From the MSI you have to create a MST (Transforms). In the MST create now the new property INSTALLDIR=F:\, where F: is your USB-drive. If you use then the command
    msiexec.exe /i [MSI] transforms=[MST]
Adobe Reader should be installed to F:

  • HT3986 No wireless network on Windows 7 Bootcamp Install

Just did a Windows 7 Professional Bootcamp install on my brand new MacBook Pro. Everything seems to be fine, except that I cannot detect our home wireless network when I try to set up a new network. The wireless network works fine when I'm in the Mac software. I wonder what I am overlooking?

Have you installed the Boot Camp drivers?
    1. Press Option key on boot and choose Macintosh HD.
    2. Open Boot Camp Assistant, download the Boot Camp drivers and burn them in a CD or USB disk.
    3. Press Option key on boot, choose Windows volume and install the Boot Camp drivers

  • My USB Apple Aluminum Keyboard is not responding during Bootcamp Install!

I am going crazy, I have had the worst experience with this Bootcamp install which is supposed to be so easy, resulting in Apple replacing my MAC pro, and I still can't get it to work on the new machine.
My first problem was using a Windows XP Pro disk, which resulted in my continually getting a black screen saying "no bootable device, press any key to restart." I ran into this problem because I overlooked the instructions to use a USB keyboard and mouse, I was using the wireless. This process resulted in Apple replaceing my MAC Pro because some how my start-up files dissappered and the MAC geniuses couldn't even reformat my drive.
After recieving the new MAC Pro, I tried to run the Boot Camp install, using the same Windows XP Pro Disk, but now with a wired USB Apple Aluminum Keyboard and USB might mouse. I was still running into the same problem, after windows finished the Install and restarted a black screen would appear "no bootable device..." After searching many forums I found that for some reason Windows XP Professional disk skip the step where you would format the drive you partioned for Windows. I found in a forum a way to address this problem by going in DOS and entering commands to tell Windows to format the drive. I was not comfortable doing this, so I thought I would take an easyier route and get a Windows XP Home edition.
All windows versions I used were OEM, but they were all full installs (fancy hologram CD) w/Service Pack to and certificates of authenticity**
I thought great now everything should go smoothly, I have Windows XP Home Edition w/SP2, I have a USB wired apple aluminum keyboard, and I have a USB wired might mouse. This has not been the case.
After I complete the Bootcamp process on my Leopard operating system and Windows XP completes loading all the file prior to begin the Install, the Windows XP Installation asks to press "Enter" to begin Install. This is the point now I can't get past, because I get no response from my keyboard. I tried every USB port on my CPU and still no response when I reach this step in the Windows Installation. I am becoming very disgruntle with Apple because the AppleCare, which I pay for, and the MAC genius will not help me with this problem because it is during the Windows Install. Please help before I flip out.

That worked after using a generic DELL PC keyboard no extra keys. Apple hustled me into buying a wired keyboard, because I had only ordered the wireless keyboard.
    Thanks
