Parallels Desktop 5 or Parallels Desktop Switch to Mac ?

I recently bought my first Mac (Macbook Pro 7,1 and plan to port some of my Windows applications into a Parallels virtual machine. The Mac specialist who sold me the package included Parallels Desktop 5 for Mac. Upon reading the installation instructions I learn that there is a different program, Parallels Desktop Switch to Mac. Would that be better for my needs? Should I exchange the one I have for a Switch to Mac?

Welcome to Apple Discussions
Parallels Desktop 5 will allow you to install a virtual machine for Windows onto your mac provided you have a copy of Windows and a serial number available. You will be starting from scratch so will have to install your applications again and move any data folders/files across to the new locations.
If you want Tutorials on how Mac's work and some extra migration tools then Switch to Mac might suit you better (but IMHO it's not worth it)

  • Parallels Desktop 7 for Mac ( Windows)

Is Parallels Desktop 7 for Mac ( Windows) a good system to add onto your mac? Or Will it make it slow?

As Ttut says, Parallels runs as an application, so there is absolutely no OS X performance decrease when Parallels is not running.
The good news is that you can download the Parallels 7 Desktop Trial and try it out for a few days before you decide to purchase it: http://www.parallels.com/download/desktop/ (But you still need a full copy of whichever Windows version you will use in order to test Parallels.)
The fastest WIndows performance on a Mac is achieved without Parallels. Use Boot Camp to install Windows and then boot directly into Windows at start-up. It is comparable to running Windows on a similarly-configured Windows PC. But with Boot Camp, you must reboot to switch back and forth between OS X and Windows.
But if you absolutely MUST use both Windows AND OS X applications at the same time, Parallels can do it. Both Windows performance and OS X performance are diminished by about 50% when both operating systems are running at the same time. Processor-intensive applications like graphics, photo, and video editing suffer the most noticeable performance hit. Text editing applications suffer the least. Online browsing experience depends upon the website visited. Flash-heavy websites suffer a lot.
Check the Parallels website and be certain that your MacBook has enough free hard drive space and enough RAM.

    All,
A very interesting NOTE to this thread. In order to try and get the "ignore permissions" box to show up in GET INFO (so I could execute Matt the Magician's solution to file sharing issues)-- I ran the terminal command for disabling ACLs on my internal HD / start up disk (as indicated in the linked thread to BDAqua's forum).
Although I understand that this was useless for disabling permissions on the start up disk (as everyone here pointed out) and allowing me to see the "ignore permissions" check box - somehow it did seem to fix my file sharing problem...and that was the root problem I wanted solved in the first place! After doing the terminal command and a quick reboot, I went in and tested file sharing on the chosen directory and I can create new files or work from existing files in the directory, with both users being able to modify / and save from both machines and each machine sees the revisions and can build from them. Bottom line - I'm stoked and want to thank everyone for their help.
The only other tweak I made was going over to my wife's machine and instead of using her log in / password, I just used my name and password to connect to my main machine that was sharing directories. Maybe that's what fixed the problem or the ACL disable but either way...I'm up and running the way I want to be.
Hope this thread helps anyone else who has these file sharing / permissions issues with Leopard. Especially for anyone wanting to do such a simple file sharing set up between 2 computers. I wish I understood exactly which tweak fixed the problem, but at least it works the way I want now.
So happy to be done w/this one!
Thx everyone. Any additional input on what solved it is welcome, so my curiosity is quelled...

  • Is  mountain lion compatible with parallels desktop 5 for Mac?

I currently have Mac OS X. 6 snow leopard and want to upgrade to the latest version of Lion.  But I use Parallels desktop 5 for Mac.  Will this be compatible?

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
Only Parallels Desktop 7 and newer are supported on OS X Mountain Lion. Update Parallels Desktop before upgrading to Mountain Lion. Make a backup of your data with Time Machine and check that your applications are compatible > http://www.roaringapps.com

i hv bought d Parallels Desktop 9 for Mac. how to intall it without installation CD? jus hv activation key...

From what you say, you have probably opened Parallels Desktop. If you were not asked for your activation key, you will find a button called "Parallels Desktop" at the top left part of the screen, so press it, and you will find an option named "Activate" or something similar. Select it, and if Parallels Desktop is not activated, type the activation key. That's all.
Respecting to the window you are seeing now, you have to choose one option to create a virtual machine. For example, if you have got the operating system you want to install in a DVD (for example, Windows), choose DVD. If you have got the operating system installer in an ISO file, choose Image File. You can find more help in the Parallels website.

  • I have Mac OSX Lion 10.7.4, Quickbooks Pro 2010, Parallels Desktop 7 for Mac, Operating in Windows 7.  Are there any recommendations for running Quickbooks Pro 2010?

I have Mac OSX Lion 10.7.4, Quickbooks Pro 2010, Parallels Desktop 7 for Mac, Operating in Windows 7.  Quicbooks Pro 2010 is not responding or opening currently. Quickbooks does not support Parallels anymore.  I hear Apple Bootcamp is an opton.  Are there any recommendations for running Quickbooks Pro 2010 on Mac?

QuickBooks Pro 2010 for Mac is not supported in Lion. QB Pro 2011 will work, but I just got an email today that 2011 will not be updated to work in Mountain Lion. QB Pro 2012 will be updated for ML.
Be aware that the Mac version of QuickBooks is shamefully lacking in features compared to the Windows version. I do use the Mac version, but it has more features than I need for a small business, so it doesn't affect me. No one knows why Intuit seems to hate Mac users, but they show it every day.
If QB Pro 2012 for Mac can be downloaded as a demo, I would strongly suggest testing with it before making a final decision. You will be able to import the Windows data, but possibly not all of it, depending on the Windows version features you use.
Boot Camp allows you to install Windows on its own, bootable partition. When you boot to it, you are of course running Windows in every sense of the word. Just on Mac hardware rather than typical PC gear. Your Windows version of QB will work there without issue. The problem is having to boot back and forth between Windows and OS X, depending on what software it is you need to use at the time.

  • Norton in my Windows' Parallels desktop 7 for Mac?

    Hello,
I,m new in the here and with Mac. I'll be grate for the help.
Will I protect my iMac if I introduce Norton in my Windows' Paralles desktop 7 for Mac?
    Thanks
    Gl0

    Hello:
IMHO, NEVER use Norton (or any other A/V software) on a Mac.  There are no viruses that affect a Mac running OS X - none.
What you do with Windows is up to you.  In answer to your question, your Windows and OS X systems are separate.

  • Parallel port switcher

    Hi all,
I have attached a parallel port switcher that I downloaded but I keep getting the error "manager call not supported" as attached.
How can I run/ use the attached vi? I have Labview 7 and Labview 8.5 installed, in my Windows XP and Windows 2000.

    Hi all,
I've soldered 3 LEDs to pin 2, pin 6 and pin 9 and pin 25 to ground. I need to control the on off of the 3 pins through Labview. I've modified an example I found in Labview as attached but there are things that I don't understand:
    1. Why is it when I clicked both LED 18 and 22 on Labview, all my 3 LED on breadboard (connectted to pin 2,6,9) turned on?
    2. Why is the "register write value" in Labview consists of 32 LEDs? How can I change it to may be 8 or 3 LED?
    3. If I change the "register write value" to constant, what value or number should I insert to on/ off my LED?
    Please advice.

  • ISE question on desktop switches, MAC replace, MAC move

    Hi all,
few questions on authenticator NAD (example: switch) to support on these items
    01. desktop switches, how we can enable other switch to plug in and extend the network? What is this deal with Network Edge Access Topology (NEAT)?
what must configure on ISE policy node, authenticator switch and the new plug in extended switch?
    02. How and what need to do on authenticator switch and ISE on these:
    a. MAC Replace
    b. MAC Move
    Thanks
    Noel

    mac replace -
    http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/switches/lan/catalyst6500/ios/12.2SX/configuration/guide/dot1x.html#wp1143287
    mac move -
    http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/switches/lan/catalyst2960/software/release/12.2_55_se/configuration/guide/sw8021x.html#wp1481527
    Before you consider NEAT -
If you are using a dumb switch you can enable multi-auth so that all mac  addresses forwarded up to the switch port are authenticated, dynamic  vlan assignment is not a scalable solution for this solution since you  can only assign the first authenticated mac address to the dynamic vlan,  others either inherit the vlan or error disable the port (I can't  recall), but it is documented.
NEAT is only supported on a few access or distribution switches, so make sure you follow the release notes to see if you platform supports this design.
ISE policy node - must have the av-pair of device-traffic-class=switch to be configured to dynamically convert the authenticator's port over to a trunk port. Your design depends on either MAB or dot1x to succeed for this av-pair to be triggered in your authorization policy...i.e. profiled endpoint group or a user group with the credentials mapped to a user group or both.
Authenticator switch - must allow radius authentication, authorization, and for proper license tracking an accounting.
Client switch - credentials (see reference guides and config examples), forward traffic to trigger mab if dot1x is not part of this solution.
    Thanks,
    Tarik Admani

  • More control over Desktop switching?

There are some Desktop switching behaviors that I find to be inconvenient and annoying under Lion, and I'm wondering if anyone knows of any workarounds.
I open applications in various desktops in order to organize my work. For example, when I am working on a remote web site, I might have a browser window and Terminal window running ssh running in one Desktop. At the same time, I might have another Terminal windows and an Emacs window open in another Desktop when I'm working on and testing shell scripts that run on my Mac. I might have other Terminal, Emacs, and browser windows open in other Desktops for other purposes, at the same time. When I switch from one task to another, all I need to do is use Mission Control to switch desktops.
However, if I happen to be working in a given Desktop and I close one of my windows -- say, for example, one of my Emacs windows -- I am sometimes switched to another Desktop with all of the windows that I have open that are associated with a different task. This is annoying, to say the least. This also happens sometimes if I empty my Trash, and also under other similar situations.
Yes, I know I can prevent all automatic Desktop switching by un-checking System Preferences->Mission Control->When switching to an application, switch to a space with open windows for the application. However, if I do this, then I can't switch to an open application any more via the Command-Tab application list or by clicking on an open application's icon in the Dock.
In other words, the System Preferences->Mission Control->When switching to an application, switch to a space with open windows for the application option is far too overbearing. It's all-or-nothing, and it reminds me of using a sledge-hammer when a scalpel is needed.
Ideally, I'd like to be able to select the following optional behavior: no automatic switching of Desktops, but if I manually select a running app via the Command-Tab list or the Dock, I will then be switched to that application's Desktop. In other words, the OS will not switch Desktops if I close a window, but it will switch to an app's Desktop if I explicitly select that app manually.
This is not some sort of bizarre, far-fetched behavior. Many of the desktop managers that run under Windows and under X-Windows do indeed provide this functionality. And it fits ergonomically and logically into many people's work patterns.
So do any of you know how this capability could be enabled under Mission Control in Lion?
    Thanks in advance.
PS to the admins of this web site: could you add 10.7.1 to the list of products we can choose from in our profiles? Thanks!

This was driving me crazy and went throught the whole When switching to an application, switch to a space with open windows for the application thing.  I fixed it by right-clicking on the Finder icon in the dock, choosing Options, and assigning it to All Desktops.

  • Openbox desktop switching

I am using Openbox on my laptop.
I use vertical edge scrolling on the synaptic touch pad.
    I use multiple desktops.
If I happen to swipe the vertical edge scrolling on the touch pad while over an empty section of the desktop then the desktop will switch, many times.
I find this 'feature' most annoying.
Is there some way to stop desktop switching in this manner?
I just want to switch desktops using the applet on the panel and no other method.
    Thanks
    Clive

    Thanks for that.
    Was slightly different...
          <mousebind button="A-Up" action="Click">
            <action name="GoToDesktop">
              <to>previous</to>
            </action>
          </mousebind>
Actually there were a few various entries to cover various key combinations as well, I removed them all.
Once you pushed me in the right direction it was easily sorted.
    Thanks very much

  • Virtual Desktop switching in Mavericks

With Mavericks, each display has its own set of virtual desktops whereas before, a virtual desktop "spanned" displays.
I used to have 4 virtual desktops.  After the upgrade, these virtual desktops were mapped to my primary monitor, and the secondary had one virtual desktop.  That part was ok as I use the secondary monitor only to run a Terminal that I would use across all my virtual desktops.  But the inconvenience now is switching virtual desktops!  If I'm typing something in the terminal on the secondary monitor and want to quickly go to another virtual desktop, I now first have to bring the mouse over to the primary monitor and THEN switch desktops.  Very annoying.
Does someone know of a setting or utility that can map the "virtual desktop switching" keyboard combination to a fixed display?
Apple, are you listening?  Why is Mavericks not smart enough to realize that when a user hits the keyboard combination for switching virtual desktops on a display with only ONE virtual desktop that this probably means they meant to switch virtual desktops on the other display (especially when there's only one display with multiple virtual desktops!)?

It is highly unlikely anybody working for Apple who can do anything about this is reading these forums. You might want to consider submitting the form at http://www.apple.com/feedback/macosx.html for things like this.
Be sure to indicate in the 'feedback type' popup the most appropriate choice for your submission. That is the best way to get it seen by the right people.

hello please help me my MacBook Pro screen when desktop switching fingers pressing 3 distorts a bit, with him?

First, remove Comodo. You don't need it, and it sounds like it is causing a problem.
The other symptoms sound like you have adware installed. Comodo might have detected some components of that adware, or it might not have, but whatever the case, you should NEVER allow any anti-virus software to quarantine or delete files from your computer. See: How to remove infected files.
Regarding the adware, see my Adware Removal Guide.
