Parallels Desktop and Home Networking

I don't know if anyone has encountered a similar problem that I'm describing below.
Context: We have two MBP's at home running 10.4.9 connected over a wireless network. Both computers for some time saw each other easily over the network when appletalk was enabled and also shared files easily. All one had to do was to click the network folder in the finder window, and the other computer would show up automatically.
Recently, I installed Parallels Desktop Build 3188... and well, now neither computer could see or share files with one another. From checking all my network settings, nothing about the airport connect had changed, and appletalk was still enabled on both computers.
I could remove parallels, but obviously I installed the software because I needed to make use of some PC software.
Oh, and I have checked the Parallels website. Neither their support, documentation, or FAQ were of any help whatsoever.
Has anyone experienced this problem with their home network and Parallels?

I want to thank Joe and Tristan for replying. Just a follow up to both your comments.
First, I have my parallels VM set to bridged, rather than shared networking. As to which type is actually more secure for Win XP running within the virtual machine, well, I'm not quite sure and that's surely a topic for further discussion.
I have to report on the status of my network - well, I started seeing the other mac in my network folder again... but sporadically. I was doing what Tristan had suggested, unchecking the Parallels Host-Guest and Parallels NAT configurations. I suspect the following:
When my computer is first booted, having both the Parallels Host-Guest and NAT checked prevented me from seeing the other computer. Uncheck them, and all of a sudden the other computer appears on the list. However, at this point, I can re-check the boxes of the Host-Guest and NAT, and am still able to access the other computer. It's almost like the computer doesn't see it at first, but then when you take down the Parallels wall and put it up again later, the computer remembers that the other one was there. This is completely speculative, and needs a few more rounds of testing to be sure.
However, for now at least, I can get my network connections back.

  • Wifi and home network and printing

I just recieved my new MacBook Pro last week and certainly enjoying it, but have a few questions(bye the way, I'm a new Mac user):
I have a Linksys wireless router in my home and able to access my shared files on my xp machine, but sometimes after the notebook goes into sleep mode and when it wakes it can no longer detect my pc. The PC can still access the notebook though. Any thoughts? And At that same time I am able to still access the internet.
Also, the other night I received my first kernel panic attack and recieved the gray screen message and had to reboot. It happened while I was outside surfing the internet and I had lost my signal for internet and home network. I was picking up other wifi signal too and wondering if that could have caused it. I then made a call on my cordless phone and that is around the time of the kernel panic. Since then no Kernel panics. Again any thoughts? Should I be worried having a Kernel panic with a machine that is less then a week old?
    Look forward to your responses.
MacBook Pro 2.2 ghz   Mac OS X (10.4.10)

You can have a go using a wireless bridge.. eg the airport express will do this.. you can join it to the iphone wireless running as a hotspot.. and then plugged into the TC wan port.. the TC has to be setup in router mode.. so this is going to give you double NAT errors.. and of course errors for all the time the hotspot is turned off.. but it can work. However you might find it requires you to manually connect up each time.. If you are really going to try and do this you will manage it.. but how fiddly it becomes might put you off after a week.
You will chew up your 5GB very fast using any streaming media even radio. So be very careful to track the usage.
Apple should have built in the TC the ability to plug in a wireless 3G modem.. via the USB but Apple have ceased to do adventurous stuff.
If you give up the TC as main router there are plenty of better products on the market that will handle multiple wan connections.. !!

  • Parallel desktop and VMware Fusion

    Hello,
I'm having a hard time figure out what's the best virtual machine to install on my MacBook Pro 2.4 Ghz. I don't like Bootcamp because it requires the reboot. I also looked at CrossOver but the performance was pretty bad so I removed it. I'm now looking at Parallel desktop and VMWare fusion. Can anyone please give me an advice, thanks.

I am using Parallels without problems. I have two XP machines set up, one where I run a couple of Access databases and a family tree database, and another that I use for testing different settings for student lab exercises etc. I also have a Linux Ubuntu machine set up, again for testing settings. The Ubuntu is not quite as seamless as the XP - I can't for example drag files between them.
Feel free to ask any specific questions.

  • General HELP for RAID and HOME NETWORK... I'm a bit lost :(

First off, I'm sorry about the long post but I just wanted to ask everything at once since I don't know what effects what?
Over the past years I've had a MBP and have always added Western Digital Mybook drives whenever I needed storage. One of clicked and died this past year and I lost some data since I was "MANUALLY" backing up. Since then I've tried to read about RAID, NAS, and DROBO type devices.
I recently bought a Mac Pro 2008 edition because I needed more speed. I mainly edit wedding photos in Lightroom but also come from a heavy motion graphics background and do some After Effects projects from time to time.
Here's a list of my current setup and what I'm hoping to achieve but I'm in over my head of what to do???
1 Mac Pro (2008 edition) - I'm considering setting up 4 1TB harddrives inside that are mirrored. I was looking at the Caviar Black or Hitachi drives...
    2. I have two Airport Extreme Base Stations for my home network. (One is plugged into my Mac Pro and the other is near my Vizio LCD and Xbox 360. I've been toying around with sharing iPhoto slideshows (which I really like the idea of) The problem is that it seems really slow for video and hiccups on the stills sometimes. It doesn't seem to make a difference if it's pulling it from the Mac Pro or from a USB drive attached directly to my Airport Extreme. How do I speed this up? Is it always going to be faster to stream from the Mac Pro over ethernet cable than a harddrive plugged in through USB?
    3. A few RAID and NAS solutions I've been looking at are the following but I don't really understand what I get with an external device vs an internal? I also don't know which is BETTER? for easy reliable backup.
    http://firmtek.stores.yahoo.net/sata5pm2se2.html

    http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/hard-.../RAID/Desktop/
    http://www.synology.com/enu/products/CS407/index.php
    4. I've been reading mixed reviews about the Drobo but don't quite understand if it's a better solution then setting up a mirror INSIDE my Mac Pro. I DO NOT want to buy a $900 raid card for the Mac Pro though. Do most people choose the Drobo because they only have laptops? Should I only consider building something inside my Mac Pro?
    5. I was considering Chonosync for backing up 3rd level backups
    6. I just bought a Blu-Ray drive for 4th level backups that I can send off site.
    7. I have all these other Mybooks. Two of them are mirrored but only one is a 1TBx2 Sata drive. The rest are IDE. I guess I'll just use these for misc things? Maybe just plug one into the Xbox for watching movies?
    8. My neighbor down the hall has a similar setup and is using a Mac Mini to stream things (through Front Row) like Hulu and videos another room to his TV. Mine doesn't seem to stream fast enough. Since I have the MBP that I will use rarely since I got my desktop I was considering using that instead of Apple TV or a Mac Mini but it's too slow? Maybe I set it up wrong?
PLEASE HELP? I don't know what I'm doing.

    Hi,
For backup, video work, photography and expanding the Mac Pro storage capability the FirmTek SeriTek/5PM would be my choice. The bundle that you pointed to will work if 130MB/sec. is fastest enogh for your needs. The card is only $70 in the bundle which makes it a nice deal.
    http://firmtek.stores.yahoo.net/sata5pm2se2.html
If you want 200MB/sec, performance I would go with the Sonnet Tempo E4P or the HighPoint RR 2314 if you desire RAID 5 redundancy.
    http://www.amug.org/amug-web/html/amug/reviews/articles/sonnet/mac-pro/
    http://www.amug.org/amug-web/html/amug/reviews/articles/highpoint/2314/
Trying to use NAS via the network will be 3-7x slower than the SeriTek/5PM. The SeriTek/5PM is a much better choice for backup, video and photography. NAS is good for low energy, always on, low use server needs. However, you can simply turn Mac OS X file sharing on and the Mac Pro will provide performance faster than any NAS.
Drobo - Why do people even consider this option?
The performance is USB speed even with a FW800 connection.
Users have reported losing data with firmware updates.
And the unit is one of the most expensive, slow performing options available. I cannot image ever wanting a Drobo
    Backup Software:
I like SuperDuper. I also like using the "Restore" tab in Disk Utility to clone one disk to another. The key to good backup is to keep it simple and regular.
    MyBook - NOT
If your storage needs exceed more than a single FireWire backup disk you really need to go with eSATA. The SeriTek/5PM and the Mac Pro combination provides virtually unlimited storage capabilities as the tray system allows new hard disk sets to be easily loaded or dismounted.
    Have fun!

  • BT Netprotect Plus and Home Network.

I have just upgraded to BT Infinity and BT Netprotect Plus. My old Desktop, with LAN, and my Netbook ,wireless, both run Windows XP and previously had Mcafee Internet Security on both. Prior to the 'upgrade' the home network was fine. Now in lets call it 'Mcafee', Home Networks, My Home Network, the Desktop sees the Netbook as having an 'old' version of Mcafee although it has been uploaded three times, the latest today. This stops me in my tracks trying to get the network working again. BT Help was no help, apart from, offering to charge me to sort out something which was no problem before. Any good ideas out there?

  • Trouble connecting older Gateway desktop to home network

    Hi all-
I am trying to connect an older Gateway 5200s desktop (that we have used for internet previously) to my current home network, but I'm not getting any internet connectivity.
Home router is Actiontec M1424 wr rev E.
the old Gateway uses Windows XP Prof v 2002 SP3
The wireless network adapter is 1394 Net Adapter and also the Intel R pro/100 VE network connection
(the Intel adapter says a "network cable is unplugged" and I never knew what that meant- connections have worked in the past)
My current home system is a Dell desktop running Windows Vista home
The old Gateway is up and running, but I just cant seem to figure out what the internet connection problem is.
    Any thoughts?
    Thanks

Did you connect wirelessly before with this machine?  Whose wireless adapter is the 1394 network adapter? - typically that means a firewire adapter that is not wireless.

  • Wee Problem with Parallels Desktop and the Westmere Mac Pros

Just got my new Westmere 8-Core Mac Pro last Friday, and spent the last four days in agony.
I used Migration Assistant to transfer over my accounts from my old Mac Pro, but it crashed hard -- so hard that I had to reformat the hard drive and do a clean install of the system. So I decided to do a clean install of all of my programs as well, and the Westmere crashed on the Parallels Desktop installation. And, again, it crashed so hard that I had to reformat the hard drive and do a clean install of everything all over again.
Today, I read a review of the Westmere Mac Pros in Macworld (http://www.macworld.com/article/153704/2010/08/quad8_core_macpro_2010.html?lsrc=top2), and learned:
We ran into a problem running Parallels on the Westmere-based Mac Pros, so we could not complete the Speedmark 6 suite of tests. When booted into 64-bit mode (as the new Mac Pros do by default) the systems would crash with Parallels installed. Booting into 32-bit mode would allow the systems to start up, but we still couldn’t use Parallels. We eventually tried a complete wipe and reinstall from the Mac Pro’s systems disc and downloaded the very latest version of Parallels to eliminate any other potential problems, and had the same issue. Apple and Parallels are aware of the problem and assure me that Parallels is working diligently on a fix. The application worked just fine on the new quad-core Mac Pro with the Nehalem processor.
Hoped I saved somebody some time.

    Hi akapod,
Looks like they may have the fix out.
Mac Pro (Mid 2010): Kernel panic when installing or restarting Parallels Desktop 5 for Mac
Please let me know if it's available and fixes it.

I bought a macbook air and parallels desktop+windows 7 to install maxsea (for sea navigation). This software requires SQL server 2008 express SP1. However I can not install SQL server because of an issue on the performance counter.

  • Need some help with WRT54G2 and Home Network

Ok, I've had the WRT54G for a long time and recently updated to the WRT54G2 but now can't access file and print sharing that's running Windows Vista from Windows XP using wireless.
    Here's my set up,
Desktop running Windows Vista connected to router (This is the computer with Folders and Printers)
    2-Windows XP Laptops connected wirelessly
All 3 are set on same workgroup can be seen on Windows XP machine when going to, My Network Places, also all can get on the internet.
Any ideas what the problem could be? I'm guessing a setting somewhere but I haven't been able to find it.
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

    Hey Gary...
I just upgraded my set up to a WRT54GS from an older linksys router that only had A/B. I have two wired desktops and a wireless desktop in my network..all running xp and all sharing files. I had no issues with the file sharing prior to the upgrade but once I changed over the computers could see eachother, access the net but not share files...Chances are it is likely a firewall issues...
Try turning off windows firewall...that might help..
Also depending upon your antivirus there might be settings in there that you would have to change to allow for file sharing.
In my case I did some research and read that if you are running Norton 2009 on the computer that you want to share files from to try uninstalling and reinstalling the program..Had something to do with firewall settings in the program.....I did that and ouila...now all my computers are sharing again...

  • Parallels Desktop and Bluetooth

I am running a Macbook Pro with parallels desktop for mac running widows XP Pro. My problem is that I can't get the bluetooth that's built in to my MacBook to be recognized in Windows XP. I have a smartphone and I sync it with microsoft outlook (the entire reason I bought parallels and Win XP) A friend told me to find the drivers for the bluetooth unit built into the mac, but I cannot find them anywhere. Any help?

You need to post this question on the Parallels Forum. Parallels is not Boot Camp. There is no need to install a Blue Tooth driver for the Mac hardware. But you do need to activate USB in Parallels. You will find help with this at their support site and by reading the documentation.
The Apple Discussions only provide support for Apple products.

  • Parallels Desktop and OSX Lion?

I have os Snow Leopard and would like to upgrade to Lion. I heard that Parallels Desktop 5 doesn't work on Lion. What do I need to do to install Lion and upgrade to Parallels 7 without reinstalling all the Windows programs that I am already using?

Parallels 7 full supports Lion OSX. I wouldn't use 5 because it is not supported, version 6 should also work .
Try ebay , I got my Parallels 7 for $49
    Good Luck

  • Trouble setting up new router and home network

I used to have a home network. I managed to mess this up real bad, but it was working. Put in 16 port D-Link router. Main computer connects to internet and I can see all the computers. One Mac mini can access internet over the ethernet connection. MacBook Pro can access internet over Airport extreme but when connected over ethernet it won't connect. IMac and an older Mac Pro (G5) both running OS 10.4 won't connect by either airport or wired. Computers are all set to receive "using DHCP" Also on network is a Laserjet HP 4101 which no longer will print. What am I doing wrong here?

Problem partially solved by doing the following.
Modem to ABS. ABS has three ports, two of which connect to computers. Third port goes to a hub with 4 additional hubs. I can't seem to get anything to work through D link 16 port switch. Seems like I have a nice new D link paperweight since I can't get it to work. I am not sure why. Unfortunately with the 4 port hub I have no more room to grow the network and that is why I hope the D link would work.
One last problem one MacBook won't connect to airport. Other computers seem to connect to airport just fine. FYI to get everything to connect up and work required a full reset of the hardware and computers. Basically shut down computers, ABS, routers modem, hubs, including removing batteries for up to 30 minutes and reconnecting and turning them on. These things seem to have a memory and keep looking for connections that used to be there but are no longer. This full reset perhaps could have fixed things a while ago and I could have some of my money still in my wallet. Comments?

  • TS1741 How do I get my Apple TV to view movies if there is no Internet connect but my router and home network is fine, but my IP's drops connection always without fail twice a month for 5 hours?

I have an ISP that goes down two or three times a month like a hooker with a hundred dollar bill.
How in the crap do I keep the I tunes movies that I've purchased. And backed up to my Server which also shares a
Folder on the main Computer on a 10(TB) Hard-drive. I have two windows. Windows PC's three Apple computers
    And 4 NAS BOXES,
I HAVE almost every type of computer you can imagine, to include NOTEBOOKS.
the (Network Access Storage). Have several different ones from hardware to software, or intel to D--Link.
With a total of 64 TB in hard drives, not that it matters but the boo tables are using firmware boot drives

In iTunes Preferences you should be able to change the location of where media is stored to any accessible local or network drive.
You can also store media in several locations once downloaded by re-adding files store on other drived by reference rather than copying to teh iTunes media folder (once things are in iTunes, find them in the iTunes folder, copy to the desired destination drive, then delete from within iTunes interface itself - next re-add the files by reference.  This used to work by holding alt or similar when dragging and dropping to the itunes icon or setting iTunes Preferences not to copy on import).
The issue for AppleTV is that when the internet goes down it won't be able to authorise the locally streamed media to play - also you'll need at least one computer running to stream via Home Sharing.  Even if you put media on a NAS iTunes is a helper app that fetched the media being played and sends it to AppleTV.  NAS itunes servers don't work for Home Sharing.
