Parallels Desktop support?

Does the new operating system support Parallels Desktop?
For work, I run the latest build of Parallels Desktop. Are there any issues installing the new operating system 10.5 on machines that run Parallels?
Thank you,
TPK

Yes it runs nicely but we uninstalled it before the upgrade the install in leopard wen like a charm use the Paralells dmg install file to uninstall the software you doent have to reinstall Wndows if you have an old bootcamp beta delete it to

You'll need to upgrade to Parallels Desktop 7 to regain compatibility.  Good luck....

It was as simple and painless as can be to upgrade PD5 to PD6.  There was no time spend accept downloading and running the install package.  A very solid piece of software in my experience.

  • VMWare Fusion and Parallels Desktop Benchmark Comparison

This is a quickie benchmark of VMWare Fusion and Parallels Desktop using Super PI, PC Mark 05, and Passmark.
    VMWare Fusion 36932
    Parallels Desktop 3094 Beta 2
    Notes:
Both virtual machines were allocated with large 10+ GB virtual disks and 640MB of RAM. The VMWare CPU was configured with two processors. The Parallels CPU was configured with 1 (two is not available). VMWare reported the CPU as 1 physical, 2 logical processors running at 2.66 GHz while Parallels reported 1 physical, 1 logical processor running at 9.6 GHz (the combined speed of all four cores on the Mac Pro). The max observed CPU utilization in activity monitor when running under VMWare was 200% and max under Parallels was 173%.
I chose not to compare 1 VMWare CPU vs. 1 Parallels CPU. While Parallels does not support SMP or multithreaded processes on multiple processors the CPU utilization on the Mac went well above 1 core (173%). For this comparison, I wanted to see results of max processing based on what the two vendors have delivered, as opposed to benchmarking the underlying "virtual or hypervisor cpu" on a 1:1 basis. This explains why VMWare was 2x faster than Parallels on some CPU tests.
Both of these products are beta. VMWare is running in debug mode (can not be turned off in this beta).
Caveat emptor on these stats. This was an unscientific exercise to satisfy my curiosity. Some of the extraordinary differences are highlighted with <--.
    Platform:

    Disk 1 - OS X, 73GB Raptor
Disk 2 - dedicated disk where each virtual machine image was created separate from the OS or any OS-related virtual memory files.

Thanks for posting these numbers - it's an interesting comparison.
I would expect the final VMWare fusion performance numbers to be quite a bit better than that of Parallels - they have almost a decade's worth of experience more than the Parallels folks in this arena, and a much larger development team to boot.
Once VMWare Fusion is released to the public, I think that you'll see a clearer distinction between the two products. VMWare will continue to appeal to the professional customer, with a more robust feature set and corporate-friendly features (and a correspondingly higher price tag); Parallels will fall more into the consumer/VirtualPC-replacement market. It will be interesting to see how Parallels will be affected when (and if) VMWare player is ported to OS X.
Interesting about the Parallels performance stats on a native partition - looks like almost enough reason to avoid the bootcamp partition approach altogether. Sharing a native windows installation with a VM in parallels is a pretty scary situation in any case, as the two environments have entirely different hardware configurations. Do-able, but there is some black magic involved (if you want to see an example of what I mean, try to move a windows installation from one machine to another w/different hardware sometime - it ain't pretty); I wouldn't try this in a production scheme unless I had REALLY good backups.

  • Will the new time capsule back up Windows on an iMac running Parallels Desktop?

Will the new time capsule back up Windows on an iMac running Parallels Desktop?

Windows home version MSBackup, cannot backup to network drives.
That was a little bonus from Bill for those who didn't fork out for Pro or Ultimate.
Like people with home versions would never need to backup to network drives.. oh no.. never!!
You need to mount the hard disk in windows for it to work.
It will help a lot if you load the airport utility for windows into your windows OS.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/dl1547
Open windows explorer and type the network address of the TC.
\\TCname.local (where TCname is the correct network name of the TC).
The TC should have all names that are windows compatible.. ie
Fred Blog's Airport Time Capsule is just wrong. It is too long, it has spaces and it has apostrophe which is illegal.
A good name for the TC is TC
The default hard disk share name of data is fine. It should not be Time Capsule or anything again that is over long .. has spaces or is otherwise incompatible with windows.
A good name for the TC wifi is TCwifi
Then you can mount it \\TC
typing that directly into the address bar of windows explorer.
There are still issues with windows naturally and running in parallels I have no idea what other issues might come up.
Tell me if you have issues.. but you will need most likely to check the network.
Open a command window and ping the TC by name and by IP address. If IP address works just mount by IP.
\\10.0.1.1 for example .. and that is the default TC IP address when in router mode.
If you still cannot access the TC my recommendation is to use a USB drive and use that.. it is 10x easier and more reliable than mixing Mac and windows backups on the TC.

  • Parallels Desktop 3.0 on Snow Leopard

We would like to upgrade to the new Snow Leopard OS.
However we are presently running Parallels Desktop 3.0 for Mac on the OS X Leopard software. Part of the decision to upgrade to OS X Snow Leopard will depend on being able to do a smooth transition for Parallels when we do the upgrade.
Has anyone gone through this yet and if so can you tell us if you have encountered any difficulties with running Parallels 3.0 once you have done the upgrade.
    Thanks ... Lyndale

I can attest to the fact that Parallels 3 will not work with SL. I learned the hard way three days ago. I jumped on SL as soon as it was released in my locality. Alas after completing the upgrade I realized I couldn't open my Windows XP VM. Having many mission critical tasks based on the VM, my quick fix was to upgrade to Parallels 4 (something I had always hoped I would never have to do).
For the most part the upgrade to Parallels 4 in SL was a breeze. There were no problems with the VM side. All applications were functioning and there was no trouble with the data. The caveat: Parallels Tools is not fully functioning no matter how much I tried to reinstall it. I encountered the following:
    1. Mouse synchronization not working between host and VM (I'm stuck with having to hit ctrl + alt to release cursor all the time)
    2. Dynamic resolution tool not working (guest OS window not resizing automatically)
    3. Coherence is not working
The other tools seem to be working fine: clip board and time synchronization, shared profile and applications tools, and parallels compressor. It is more of a convenience issue of seamlessly working between host and VM, but a convenience I sorely miss. It appears from Parallels Forums that a significant number of users are experiencing this trouble. No working solution for me yet, but let me share the three options offered by Parallels Support:
METHOD 1: Uninstall and Re-install Parallels Tools using the VM Control Panel => Add and Remove Programs (http://kb.parallels.com/en/4841) followed by reinstall of Tools from the Virtual Machine Menu of Parallels Desktop.
METHOD 2: Uninstall Parallels Desktop using the latest dmg file (build 3846) then re-installing using the same. You won't lose your VM with this trick, but it didn't work for me still.
METHOD 3: Alternate method of re-installing Parallels Tools by connecting the VM to an ISO image (prl-tools-win.iso) in your /library/parallels/tools folder (placed there during initial install of Parallels 4) then installing tools from the VM side.
Apparently the above workarounds have worked for some. I am still hunting for the solution that will work for me (any suggestions from the gurus out there?). I miss Parallels 3 now, but I'm still hoping I never need to roll back to 10.5.8.
Consider these when thinking about your planned upgrade.

  • HT3986 Windows on MacBook with Parallels Desktop 7

I need to install Windows on a MacBook 13" 5.1 bought May 2009. Operating system Mac OS X 10.5.8. Processor 2GHz Intel Core 2 Duo. Memory 2GB 1067 Mhz DDR3. What Windows software do I need to work with this laptop and Parallels Desktop 7?  Does in need to be 32 bit or 64 bit?
    Wouls appreciate any guidance.

I think you would be able to work with either 32 or 64 bit windows, but you would need to double check with the Parallels support list.
If you do not already have Parallels, there is also VMware Fusion and VirtualBox (free from Oracle (formally Sun)).
I would suggest you think about adding more RAM, as running a VM can be very memory hungry.  RAM upgrades are not that expensive.  Check with Crucial.com and MacSales.com as respected Mac RAM vendors.

  • After upgrade to OS X Mavericks, Parallels Desktop 9 problems

After updating to OS X Maverics, I began to have problems with Parallels Desktop 9.  After several re-installs of Parallels, I asked for Parallels Customer support.
I was directed to start terminal and type in
    sudo su
    and then press return
    in Terminal type in
    id -a
    an then press return
my Terminal output was as follows:
    sh-3.2# id -a
    uid=0(untitled 1) gid=0(wheel) groups=0(wheel),12(everyone),61(localaccounts),100(_lpoperator),402(com.apple.s harepoint.group.1)
    sh-3.2#
In the Parallels support articls (http://kb.parallels.com/118079)
if the output starts with "uid=0(guest)" it means Mac OS X recognizes the system administrator with the root permissions as the guest user. Please consider contacting Apple support to resolve this issue.
    How do I fix this?

I have the same problem. I got too many hours into this when I finally called Parallels tech support. My output from the command looked like that below. Thing is I have 2 other machines running Parallels and they look the same.

  • Using Parallels Desktop 6 With Snow Leopard?

I believe that Parallels Desktop 6 will enable me to use Windows apps on my iMac.
However, I am clueless as to how the process works.
Do I simply install PD6 in order to use Windows apps or do I need to install a Windows operating system as well?
If this latter is the case, how on earth do I go about it without wiping off my OS X?
Any advice and help would be welcome.

    Hi Ian,
Apple BootCamp allows you to install Windows on its own partition on your internal harddisk.
It does not allow installation of Windows on external HDs.
    http://www.apple.com/support/bootcamp/
BootCamp lets you run Windows natively (using the real hardware) whereas Parallels virtualizes certain hardware parts (like Ethernet controller, graphics card, etc.).
Therefor BootCamp Windows is always faster than a Parallels Windows and so better suited for Games or 3D-CAD software.
Depending on your Windows usage, you might not even feel the speed difference.
Downside of BootCamp is that you have to reboot your Mac to use Windows whereas with Parallels you can run it alongside OSX.
While the Parallels application has to reside on your internal harddisk, you can point the WIndows VM to reside on your external harddisk.

  • Parallels Desktop v3.0 corrupts downloads on Mac Pro but not on MacBook Pro

Parallels Desktop for Mac version 3.0 is corrupting downloads and updates on my Mac Pro, but not on my MacBook Pro. Symptoms include the message "The digital signature for this package is incorrect. The package may have been tampered with or corrupted since being signed by “Apple” when downloading a software update. Downloading a dmg software package fails at the end of the download with a "Verification failed" message. Trying to mount the package manually fails with codec overrun error. These are symptoms of a corrupted download.
The problem disappears when I uninstall Parallels. It reappears if I reinstall Parallels. My Mac Pro and MacBook Pro are nearly identical in installed software. I have reviewed the problem with AppleCare in excruciating detail (an hour yesterday and another hour today with an AppleCare Specialist). It is a new issue to them. We have send a support request email to Parallels.com.
This has been a difficult problem to troubleshoot. I had tried every suggestion that I could find on the forum under "Digital Signature is incorrect", "Verification failed", "codec overrun", etc., without success. I won't go into the painful details of the troubleshooting process, unless encouraged. But I will update the forum when I know more. Meanwhile, if you have any ideas please pass them on.

The problem has been solved by replacing the Linksys WRT54G Wireless-G Router with an Apple AirPort Extreme 802.11n Wireless Base Station. After completing the installation I was able to successfully download my test .dmg files on the both the Mac Pro and the MacBook Pro with Parallels 3.0 installed.
Before I had made this change I had worked with a Parallels tech support expert. (By the way, they were very responsive.) We had tried a number of things without success, including disconnecting and restarting the cable modem and router.
I don't know why this change in routers worked. It couldn't be related the WEP encryption on the Linksys versus the WPA2 security on the Airport Extreme because the problem was not with the wireless connection to the MacBook Pro. The problem was with the Mac Pro, which was connected via an ethernet cable, in both cases.
I am now happy, but confused.

  • Can't Hide Mac Mouse in Parallels Desktop 4.0

I have recently installed parallels desktop 4.0. I am running both Windows XP Pro and Ubuntu 8.10 (not at the same time, but as my other operating systems of choice). I am having problems with the mouse. Whenever I click on the parallels window and start to work inside of the installed operating system, the Macintosh mouse goes to the exact center of the parallels screen and WON'T disappear. How do I hide the Macintosh mouse in parallels? I only want to see one mouse at a time. This is very annoying.
Also, almost equally as annoying, whenever I have parallels open, and when I do want to use Leopard, the Macintosh mouse doesn't work normally. I cannot simply click and drag the mouse over menu bars. Rather, I have to hold the left click button down the whole time in order to get the mouse to behave like it normally does. Does anyone know of a fix for this problem?
Any insights you might have are greatly appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Nate

Obviously it's not a forbidden topic. However, we are asked to provide support for Apple's products because this website is provided by Apple for Apple product users. You can understand that Apple has no vested interest in our supporting other products. Besides, Parallels has an excellent forum to provide user support, and that should be the appropriate destination to find assistance with their product.
