Parallels Desktop - what is the speed impact?

My fuzzy impression (no numbers to confirm this) is that instead of the Mac being a full-blazing 2.33 GHz machine it maybe slows down to like a 1.8 - 1.9 GHz machine when a Windows XP VM is running in Parallels Desktop.
When I suspend the VM things speed right up again.
Is that other peoples' impressions too?
Thanks,
doug

Yea I have noticed similar behaviour. Actually not just with parallels but everything. When i boot up my free ram is around 1.7GB (out of 2GB)... even if I dont touch parellels but instead launch mail, aftereffects, skype, firefox etc... and then close everything down I still only have 1GB ram free!!
I dont really know much about mac osx memory management but I think it might be something to do with the 'inactive' memory. From what I understand this is memory which is no longer needed (potentially its free), but the system keeps it reserved but as 'inactive' in case the application is launched again and needs it - so it launches and inits quicker. If a new application needs memory and there is no actual 'free' ram then the system uses the 'inactive' ram for the new app. - If I have understood it correctly its all pretty smart!!
So basically the amount of ram available to your applications is the sum of 'free' and 'inactive'... and if you add the two together I think you'll find that you are back up to where you were before you launched parallels.
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=107918
P.S. more detail on my prev note about parallels: If you have your VM set to use 1GB of RAM, you'll see that is directly allocated in your systems 'wired' memory - even if you are running nothing in your VM, 1GB is allocated from your physical ram and cannot be swapped, so your mac apps will always suffer 1Gb less of physical ram. If you change the option i mention about disk caching thisll probably change.

What is the speed capabilities of the 3 gn time capsule ?
i'm increasing the input to 30 MBS

1,000 Mpbs using Ethernet, about 300 Mbps using wireless.
Your 30 MBS connection is likely 30 Mbps, not MB. Huge difference.
Mbps is the standard measurement that most service providers use to describe the speed of their service.

  • What's the speed of mackbook pro HD link? is it ATA100? is Fireface 400

What's the speed of mackbook pro Hard drive link? is it ATA100? is Fireface 400/800 faster than the link of the macbook pro hard drive?
I'm a recording artist. I'll use my macbook pro to record sounds, because my macbook pro 's disk is too small, I deceide to buy a fireface 800 hard drive like Lacie. Is it ok to record sounds in logic directly into the fireface 800 hard drive? or it's still better to record sounds into macbook pro's Hd.
    which one is faster anyway?
    Thanks!

It makes little difference whether the drive is SATA 1.5 or 3.0 because the MBP controller only supports SATA 1.5. SATA 3.0 drives will work but simply not at the faster speed.
The FW800 interface is capable of up to 100 MB/s interface transfer rates. The hard drives however are not able to achieve that speed in typical real world throughput. The most expensive high speed SATA drives (3.5", 7200 or faster RPM) may come close to saturating the FW800 bus. But smaller notebook drives (2.5") will not. So if you plan to use a notebook sized external drive just get one that will suit your storage needs. If maximizing throughput is important then get a 7200 RPM SATA notebook drive and put it in a FW800 enclosure. Be sure to get an enclosure that uses the Oxford chipset.
You can find suitable enclosures at:

  • What are the areas impact query to run for ever/long?

    Hi All,
When I have to talk about long running scripts or procedures I focus on DTA which suggests on Indexing and infact I think this is the main cause. What are the other areas which we need to consider for Long running queries and troubleshooting tools we need
    to use do you think?
Ofcourse blocking impacts but am purely thinking at query perspective.
    Thanks

  • What is the possible impact of running BDLS in wrong client?

    Hello,
I've been doing a system refresh from PRD to QUA and as a part of post refresh actions I've run BDLS for each client I have in the system. That system has 4 clients (500,600,700,800) so I've run BDLS 4 times (PRDCLNT500 -> QUACLNT500, PRDCLNT600 -> QUACLNT600, PRDCLNT700 -> QUACLNT700, PRDCLNT800 -> QUACLNT800). The problem is that I've run all four reports from the same client (500).
When BDLS finished and I've been checking the spool reports I found out my mistake - there were over 5.000.000 updates in correct report (PRDCLNT500 -> QUACLNT500) and only 3.000 updates in wrong ones (all other reports).
After this I've started BDLS for the remaining clients (600,700,800) correctly.
<b>The question is - could there be any possible impact on data consistency?
If so - what impact could I expect?
Would be wise to run the BDLS reports in inverse mode (changing the logical names to the original ones) in client 500?</b>

I expect that all tables marked with star (client independent tables) have no impact (they would be changed anyway).

Thanks. I got similar response from other SAP experts I've consulted. But I do not understand what are the changed records? If there would be no changed records - I would agree there is no impact. But when I've by accident changed 3x3000 records - it is hard to belive that there is absolutely no impact.
    Can you please explain?

  • What is the speed/performance comparison between Soundbooth CS5 and Audition CS6?

Obviously, I don't need to be convinced about the difference. However, in demonstrating and working with Audition I didn't take a note of these speed differences. Does anyone have this information for business justification reasons?
I am looking for the speed of a sound file (*.wav, approximately 1-5minutes in length) rendering in Soundbooth CS5 and Audition CS6 as well as a comparison of doing 10 files (approximately 1-5 minutes in length each) in Soundbooth and in Audition CS6 (using batch processing) to *.mp3 with basic processes applied. Basic processes that I am checking are Noise Reduction, Trimming front and end silences, Normalization, and rendering to *.mp3 (from *.wav). If anyone can do this for me, that would be awesome!!

    travis_smith_ wrote:
Hello _durin_, yes all those are great arguments that I've already included; however, some people like to use accurate measures/times/processes...they want numbers.
So, do you (or anyone else) happen to know the render engine speed of 1 file in Soundbooth v. 1 file in Audition?
What Durin hasn't perhaps made quite clear is that you'd have to do this on just one machine to come up with any comparisons at all - and if that machine isn't identical to yours, then it's going to be meaningless anyway; some of the processes (like NR) will vary considerably between two different machines, even running the same software. There is no way on earth that this would be an accurate comparison, and I don't think it would convince anybody who actually understood what was at issue. This is the politest way of saying that it's not going to happen... and if Durin, as Audition's Product Owner, isn't prepared to commit himself, then nobody's going to.... BUT:
Now I am moving towards the argumentation that it should replace everyone's Soundbooth, which is why I need the justification. I would run the tests myself over the current set of files, but with the license gone, I cannot.
Your real justification isn't going to be based on anything like dodgy process measurements at all, but this: Soundbooth is discontinued - there's very little, if any, support for it now, and there will be no updates to cope with OS changes, etc. Audition, on the other hand, is a long-term, well-supported software product that's under active development, and this is clearly intended to continue. Also there are business package deals to be done (like active subscriptions, etc) that simply weren't available to Soundbooth users, which companies can use far more flexibly. I think you'll find that arguements like this will cut far more mustard than any odious comparisons of 'speed' will.

  • What is the speed of data transmission when using Data Dashboard?

Hello, everybody, I've seen that doesn't matter if an iphone or a chinese tablet is used, the speed  of data transmission with Shared Variables and Data Dashboard is almost the same, and is low speed. Does anybody know how could I measure this speed of transmission? Thank you in advance.

    Hello there;
The update rate of the Data Dashboard for 1.0 is fixed  1 second for webservices and 0.2 seconds for network shared variables, depending of course on how much information is streaming on the network . On the second version of Data DAshboard you can specify your update rate within a range
You can find that info in this KB

  • EA 6500 - WHAT IS THE SPEED?

    How is it divided the speed of EA 6500? 450Mb (2,4GHz) + 450Mb (5GHz) or 225Mb (2,4GHz) + 225Mb (5GHz) in 802.11.n ?

Can't find detailed info however on 5Ghz I believe this is the following speed:
    Ultimate Speeds - Up to 450 + 1300 Mbps
I presume that maybe on 2.4Ghz either 300Mb or 450Mb is the max connection rate using N mode. Same would be on 5Ghz on N mode only. Mixed mode on 5Ghz which would include AC, speeds should be up to 1300Mb.

I'm not sure what you're asking. If you're asking us to tell you the IMEI for your particular iPad, that's impossible. None of us, your fellow users, will have any access to such information. If you're asking how to find the IMEI for your iPad, that would be labeled as such on the box, or found by these additional possibilities:
