Parallels or Fusion from Bootcamp?

After looking around at possible ways to run Windows on my Macbook... I was wondering which would be better to use my already existing BootCamp partition: Parallels or Fusion?
Both are roughly the same price, and I just wasn't sure which would be best to run Windows Vista Home Premium through Virtualization.

I would go with Fusion for Vista.

  • Parallels/VM Fusion and BootCamp compatibility

I have a MacBook running Tiger (10.4.10) which has been partitioned via BootCamp so that it also runs Windows XP.
I'm now considering also getting Parallels or Fusion so I can switch back & forth between the two platforms without a reboot, and understand that I will have to add another gig of memory to this laptop in order to have 2 gig available. (This is the "middle" MacBook of the three.)
My question: I just bought a new (on disc) copy of Windows XP so I could install it via BootCamp. Would I have to buy ANOTHER XP to use with Parallels/Fusion, or can they work with the one I already have on this machine? (Don't much like the idea of having to fork out twice for the same OS on the same computer.)
I will be very grateful if someone can answer this for me, so I know whether to go ahead with a virtual programme or not. Many thanks -

    I have read that -
Parallels was making it possible to activate under Parallels again, but would be able to use both, if using XP but maybe not Vista which is where Microsoft supports Business or Ultimate but treats a VM as a normal license activation.
You should be okay, but check forums.parallels.com and www.vmware.com fusion forums and you could try out Fusion 1.1 beta which is what I was using.

  • Bootcamp to Parallels/VMware Fusion

    Hi,
A couple months ago I partitioned my harddrive in half and installed windows 7 through bootcamp. I now no longer like that I have to restart my computer to switch to windows, and I would like to use a virtual machine client.
Has anyone made this switch? I am unsure about what I should do about my partitioned harddrive.
Can parallel or VMware use my partitioned harddrive so I can avoid going through the hassle of unpartitioning the drive?
Is it a hassle to unpartition
    Thank you!

Yes Parallels and Fusion can use your Boot Camp installed Windows as their guest operating system. How to do this is fully described on the Parallels and Fusion sites.

  • Parallels, Fusion AND bootcamp

    Hello there,
I have installed both, parallels (last version) and fusion.
Both can use boot camp, if you have already windows running.
The problem is, when i start the virtual machine (parallels or fusion), i'm stuck on the windows xp user login because it does'n recon the mouse or keyboard.
Does anyone knows anything about this?
    I have a mac pro.
    thanks

  • Which is better (Boot Camp) or (Parallel / VMware Fusion)???

    Hi guys,
I want to install Windows along OS X...
    now what is better?
to install Windows via Boot Camp or via Parallel / VMware fusion??
and if through one of the virtual machine softwares, which is BETTER?? the Parallel for Desktop or the VMware fusion one???
    Thank you

I use both boot camp and vmware fusion. A neat feature of vmware fusion is you can access your boot camp partition as a virtual machine from vmware. This way, you can have both. I believe parallels might also let you do that but I have never used it. This has been helpful to me if I need to access a file from the boot camp partition quickly and easily without rebooting my computer.
I agree with dwb that xp is probably going to be the best os to run through a virtualization software.
I honestly don't think you can go wrong with either parallels or vmware fusion. There is also a FREE software package created by sun called VirtualBox.
Here is the link to there home page: http://www.virtualbox.org/
I hear and read that it is excellent as well.
    Hope this helps.
I just installed parallels and you can use your bootcamp partition for the vm with parallels as well. Its pretty slick. Use it for light applications with parallel, reboot to bootcamp for graphics intensive ones.
    Cheers.

  • Can a Macbook pro run Parallels AND Fusion?

I know this may not be the right forum, but I'll make it a quickie.
Will I damage my mbp if I install Parallels and Fusion? I would only use them one at a time for their own virtual machines -- but can having both on the same system cause damage to my precious mbp?
    thanks!

I had both installed and upgraded from Parallels 4 to 5. It erased my Parallels 4 install and replaced it (I just downloaded the demo of 5 to see if it was worth upgrading). Long story short, I hated Parallels 5 as it brought my brand new MacBook Pro to it's knees, and since it erased my Parallels 4 I uninstalled the whole thing. Now I'm using only Fusion 3 and it is quite nice. It's not as snappy as running bootcamp but since I have decided to run Windows 7 I'll have to wait until the compatible Bootcamp drivers are released before I move it to bootcamp.
That's just my observations. I thought Parallels 4 was pretty good but Fusion 3 is better. And I don't know why Parallels 5 was such a slug but I was very unimpressedin both the performance AND the fact that it completely obliterated my previous copy with no option but to start over with a fresh install.

  • VMware Fusion Performance: Bootcamp Partition or Virtual Machine?

I'd like to run ArcGIS 9.3 in Windows XP using VMware Fusion. Can anyone comment on the virtues/drawbacks of using a bootcamp partition versus creating a VMware "Virtual Machine"?
With bootcamp partition I can gradually increase the size of the partition as the partition becomes full using Drive Genius, correct?
    What about performance?
    Thanks!

Visit MacTech.com and read their two benchmark reviews of Parallels, VM Fusion, and Boot Camp.
You cannot "gradually increase the size" of a Boot Camp partition. To change the size you must first delete the existing partition then create a new, larger partition. Doing so will delete the entire Windows system, so be sure to back it up beforehand.

  • Parallels Vs Fusion: Feedback?

I am getting a new MBP next month and am looking forward to running some windows programs. Parallels and VM fusion are both improving with time, but I wonder what feedback people can give on the current versions of both programs compared.
I am trying to figure out which one is best to get, I am leaning toward the fusion but...

I am curious. You are not the first to mention using Fusion or Parallels with a BootCamp partition. I thought the point of BootCamp is that it runs Windows without virtualization software and that Parallels and Fusion are meant exclusively for the OS X partition. Am I missing something here?
You will find there are some programs that run best without virtual software, Mainly ones that are graphic intensive. Those I run under BootCamp. There are other stuff I need to do that I can just pop into Fusion and check it there. I do this when I am working on a web page or something that I need to be sure will look good in Internet Explorer. This is the time to use Fusion. By using the BootCamp partition you will only have to have one copy of Windows on your Mac.
Doing a free trial download of both before buying the box does seem like a good idea. I hope they don't conflict with each other when both running on the OS X partition.
As long as your not running both at the same time you should not have a problem.

  • Parallel vs fusion

I am looking for the best possible way to use Quickbooks on my Mac.  The mac version of Quickbooks is horrible!  I do not want to have to reboot each time I need to go into Quickbooks.  There isn't a whole lot of information out there on the pros and cons of Fusion from VMware or Parallels.  Can anyone give their insight?

  • HELP! How can i restore/recover files from Bootcamp with Boot Failure - Missing operating system error?

    Hi,
I am having a few problems with bootcamp on my imac. When i tried to move the bootcamp partition on windows 7 into free space, it crashed and turned off. Ever since i have had the error 'Missing operating system' and it fails to boot. I have some very important files on the bootcamp partition. Is it possible to recover these files or even to restore the bootcamp partition to it's original state? I do not have a backup of my bootcamp partition. Another problem i have is that ever since i tried to expand my macintosh HD partition into free space, when i hold alt while booting up (to choose which partition to boot like i normally do), the bootcamp partition has stopped appearing. This means that i cannot even boot the windows 7 bootcamp partition anymore!
So basically here are my 2 questions:
How can i restore/recover files from Bootcamp with Boot Failure - Missing operating system error?
How can i make the Bootcamp partition appear in Startup Disk and when i hold the option key while starting up my computer to allow me to boot windows 7?
Any solutions are very much apreciated!
    Thanks!
I know that bootcamp (disk0s4) hasn't been fully deleted since it appears in disk utility (i cant do anything to it though)
And here is the error i see when i try to launch bootcamp (back when i was actually able to boot up bootcamp to the error screen)

WinClone 3 is OS X and saves Windows image it makes for restore - that should work but you will have to try and you would need to make a new image unless it also works with a native Windows system restore image. It is now supported and has come a long way.

Paragon Clone OS works and does disk-to-disk clone just like CCC you end up with two bootable drives. But does not work with your setup. It would let you clone and move your Windows install to an SSD or another disk drive though and be bootable.
During its clone process it checks for errors which is very helpful and lets you know - something CCC and others should adopt more of.

I wish for our/my sake you had re-read and rewritten the long 'story' and broken it into a brief list of facts we needed.
    OS X
    Windows
Backup (though external is much safer) and you want bootable OS X clones as well as TimeMachine

    https://support.apple.com/kb/HT1553
There are a number of things to do like chkdsk and others as well as Windows DVD to do automatic system repairs and find out why.
AppleHFS - the abilty to mount and read HFS volumes can be notorious.
I would rearrange and redo your storage setup and how you use the 4-5 internal hard drive bays.

  • I am running Snow Leopard 10.6.8 with bootcamp 3.3 on my Imac 2011. I need to updgrade to mountain lion. If I first upgrade to mountain lion, how do I go about upgrading from bootcamp 3.3 to latest bootcamp for mountain lion?

I am running Snow Leopard 10.6.8 with bootcamp 3.3 on my Imac 2011. I need to updgrade to mountain lion. If I first upgrade to mountain lion, how do I go about upgrading from bootcamp 3.3 to latest bootcamp for mountain lion?
I have seen a lot of discussions upgrading from Boot Camp 4 to 5 but no answers upgrading from boot camp 3.3 to 5. My worry is that if I upgrade from snow leopard to mountain lion, that my bootcamp partition will no longer be able to boot up. There seem to be a lot of threads suggesting problems that are possible. Has anyone gone through this upgrade with success?

Before doing any installation restart OSX from your 10.6 Snow Leopard DVD and use Disk Utility to Both Repair The Disk and Repair the Permissions of your Macintosh HD.
Next remove your Snow Leopard DVD and restart your iMac into OSX.
Update to the latest version of OS X Snow Leopard by clicking the Apple icon and choose Software Update to install Snow Leopard v10.6.8, the latest version.
Use Time Machine to make a Full Backup of your Macintosh HD.
Shut down and restart into Windows by holding the Option key at the chime and selecting Windows.
Now use Windows Backup to make a Full Image Backup of your Windows Installation to a removable drive.
Shut Down and Boot back into OSX.
Open the Mac App Store from your Dock to buy and download Mountain Lion. Then follow the onscreen instructions to install it.
Upgrading your OSX to 10.8 should not effect the Windows Partition at all since you are only upgrading the Mac side. You should not have to run the Boot Camp Assitant 5 Utility in OSX at all.
Your Boot Camp 3.3 Windows Support Drivers et. al only effect your Windows installation and should continue to run fine after upgrading.
Which version of Windows do you already have installed on the existing Boot Camp Partition?
Is it 32 bit or 64 bit?

  • Parallel Data Extraction from R3 to BI

    Dear Experts,
I am trying to execute Parallel data extraction from R3 Development to BI development. It was previously done smoothly .Without any changes its stop in parallel .Your suggestions are welcome.
    Regards
    SurendraJain

    Hi Surendra,
thanks for your reply, I am not a basis expert but a BI person. You did not detail the solution when you resolved yourself, so i was wondering if you can share some bits over here.
I would have appreciated if you would have give some details - there are quite a few parameters in RZ11.  What is the technical name of the parameter you are talking about ?
You mentioned about checking the parameter - I mean what needs to be checked, any specific values need to be there.

  • Windows 7 disappear from bootcamp after  maverick installation

Windows 7 disappear from bootcamp after  maverick installation. What should I do to recover?
I did try co reinstall windows but it make the installation new (nothing remain from the previous). Old windows partition seems lost.

Hi Jack.........ok ive managed to create a link to that video on how to install bootcamp.....this is the tutorial i used and i managed to gain 100% completion on bootcamp 1st time no messing......like i said in my previous reply did you save the windows support files from apple....(Critical).....ok no point in messing about i suggest you start again from scratch........these are the things i used and YOU will need to complete bootcamp
mem stick or cd-r / dvd-r......original copy disc of win 7 ...i never used an iso i used original disc....allow a minimum of 30gb of space for your win 7 partition.....if you want bootcamp so you can use big programs like windows based games i.e.....Crysis/Call of duty etc etc ..then you will need to consider that  you will need to allow a bigger partition to allow your HD to store the files.....this is the reason i installed bootcamp and so i made my partition    i have a 750GB HD so i made a partition of 300gb for windows 7 and left the other 450gb for Mac....so you need to partition enough for what you want bootcamp for remember once you get bootcamp working you will need to install ALL Important Windows updates Including Win 7 SP1......once everything is installed you will have bootcamp up and running lovely.....u can then boot up with either win7 or mac......click this link and watch carefully and do exactly as shown ok and you should be fine...if you have any probs contact me again ok.....let me know how you get on ok..:)...http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=fvwp&v=QFIWtXTl4d0&NR=1

  • Upgrade from Bootcamp 3.0 to 3.1 does not work - error 2229

    Hi,
I´m running Snow Leopard and Win7 on my MBP 2008, each at 250GB HDD space. I installed both together. Before, I had Win Vista and Mac OSX Tiger installed and hardware worked in both OS´s. But I had to exchange my HDD and install everything from scratch. Ever since, I can´t use right click on Trackpad or Bluetooth properly in Win 7. In Snow Leopard, everything works fine.
I found out a couple of different ways trying to fix this, but nothing worked. Now I found the hint to install this here http://trackpad.powerplan7.com/ but this requires the previous installation of Bootcamp 3.1. Problem is that I have Bootcamp 3.0 installed (with bugs, as said before - meaning trackpad etc. is not working properly).
Anything I try fails - I can´t install single drivers from Bootcamp CD (it says it worked, but nothing happens), I can´t upgrade to Bootcamp 3.1 (still the error "2229")...
So I´m lost at the moment and try to always have an external mouse with me, that´s USB connected.
Does anyone here know better ?
    Thx,
    Simon

I dontknow if this will help you or not, ut back when the BootCamp v3.1 update came out, there were a number of people who could not get it to install. For many of them it was that they had a third-party software installed which added a display-adapter to their system (LogMeIn, etc.) If you have anything like that installed, try un-installing it first, then reboot, and try the bootcamp install. If that works, then you can easily re-install the other software again (although you may need to uninstall it again fr the next bootcamp update).

  • Parallel batch jobs from ABAP

    Hi all -
Any good suggestions regarding the simplest way to submit and track parallel batch jobs from ABAP?  I have used the function modules in function group BTCH (E.g. BP_JOB_CREATE, etc.) in the past with good results but are there any more current and simpler approaches (E.g. class based)?  Running WAS 7.0 / ECC 6.0.
    Thanks,
    Pat

This may not be the right forum for such a query. Post the query on the Managing oracle Applications forums.
I am not aware of the GL jobs, but if a concurrent program is not uncompatible with itself, there is no problem running multiple jobs at the same time.
    Thanks
