Parallels Questions

Hi all,
Parallels gurus would you be kind enough to respond to these questions for me please:
1) Is 1 Gig of ram enough to run Parallels smoothly if i'm not running ram crunching apps all the time?
2) If the MBP is connected to the Intenet will both OS's simultaneously be online? For instance, a movie is downloading on a P2P file sharing software on the Windows side can i switch to OS X and surf the web with Safari at the same time?
3) If the installment of Parallels has been done will my currrent data on Windows in the MBP hard drive be migrated to Windows Parallels automatically or do have to do it myself?
Sorry if my questions sound a bit foolish - but i'm a total virgin to Paraellels. I really fancy installing it cuz i do a lot of downloading on the Windows side and work on some apps on the Mac. Just can't be bothered switching back and forth all the time.
Thanx in advance

Most of the questions seem pretty well answered, but I'll go ahead and throw my two cents in.
1) Is 1 Gig of ram enough to run Parallels smoothly
if i'm not running ram crunching apps all the time?
Yes, but it's still a little slow depending on what you're doing. I have a bout a dozen machines deployed here at work that run Parallels to run exactly one app that hasn't been ported to the Intel Macs yet. They have one GB of RAM in them with 256 MB allocated to Windows and they do ok for that one app.
I have one user who actually does office in that kind of configuration and it's a tad sluggish. Useable, but sluggish.
2) If the MBP is connected to the Intenet will both
OS's simultaneously be online? For instance, a movie
is downloading on a P2P file sharing software on the
Windows side can i switch to OS X and surf the web
with Safari at the same time?
I'd like to give you an unqualified yes, but I can't. In the vast majority of home and corporate networks, you should be just fine, but in networks where there is either no DHCP or if DHCP addresses are reserved by MAC address, then you'll have to either configure the Windows instance to use a manual IP, set the DHCP server to hand out an address to the virtual machine's MAC address (which can be found in the preference pane for that instance), or set your Mac up for internet sharing and use "host-only" networking on the Windows instance.
So, long story short, yes but you may have to jump through a hoop or two to get it to work.
3) If the installment of Parallels has been done will
my currrent data on Windows in the MBP hard drive be
migrated to Windows Parallels automatically or do
have to do it myself?
I believe you'll have to install Windows into Parallels and then manually move all your stuff. Parallels doesn't have any tool that I'm aware of to let you directly migrate data from a Boot Camp partition into a virtual hard-disk file.

  • Urgent Parallels Question

    Hello,
Hoping to find help here as the Parallels board requires such a delay of response.
I have been using parallels to print from GoToMyPC, which is a remote desktop viewing program which can only print from PC due to some java setup. Everything had been working fine (with some adjustments) until I upgraded from Parallels version 3 to 4. Now, suddenly, I can't print. I tried working with GoTo's help desk, but once they saw Parallels, they wouldn't support me. They said that if I could boot up totally into Windows they would - but not through Parallels.
Any guidance here? I need to print this way early this week.
    Questions.
    1. Any ideas?
    2. If I do need to boot up straight into Windows (without using Parallels), do I need to reinstall a second copy of this Windows on my computer? This will waste space, no? How can I do this? Do I need to create a whole partition, etc?
    3. Any ideas of how to fix this without having to log into the PC without parallels?
    4. Any idea of what would have changed in this upgrade?
I called Parallels support and after speaking to a guy for an hour, he finally figured out he couldn't help me and upgraded me to a higher level person - which will contact me via email in 3 days or so!?
I appreciate your help! Thanks so much.

Fixed my parallels issue. Thank God!
Here is what fixed it (in case anyone else suffering from this finds this post):
    I downloaded Bonjour for Windows.
    Here is the info:
Set up your printer via Apple Bonjour like it is described here:

  • Parallels question. Does it share running software with Mac X.

I never used parallel before, my question is does it share software running in windows xp/parallel with mac os.
For example, When if I disable Mac Airport, and run & turn on internet in parallel windows. When I switch to back mac, will it be connect to internet, even airport is off?

Airport is not software, and if you turned this off in one application, it would affect everything else.

  • Parallels Question/Virtual Box

    Hello-
Not to sure where to place this question in the forums, but I was wondering if anyone has used Parallels as well as virtual box so they could say which one is better. I have a PC program I want to run on my Macbook Pro, witch is Proshow Producer a honken slideshow program for PC and far superior to Imovie.
I found out that virtual box is free, but wasn't sure if it will be up for the task. In fact, I don't know if Parallels will be up for the task either.
    Any help would be appreciated.
    Thanks,

It depends mostly on how much RAM you have and what you will run in those virtual machines. And also how much you can tolerate strain/lag. 4GB of RAM is the minimum you should have, I think. I have a 2008 Mac Pro with 6GB of RAM, and it can run simultaneously VMWare Fusion (which is slower than Parallels) with Windows 7 and VirtualBox with Debian or Windows XP without noticeable strain.
I don't know about Parallels 9, but Mavericks would most likely make it slower.

  • Bootcamp/Parallels question

Ok, I've got Boot Camp on my blackbook successfully booting and running XP. My question is, can I run parallels using that same installation of XP or will I need to install XP AGAIN on another separate partition? I wanted to hear some input about this before I installed parallels. I love BC but sometimes it's nice to run a windows program virtually without shutdown and restart. I have a working copy of the latest version of VirtualPC, does VPC suck on the intel macs? Thanks!

Presently you cannot use another Windows installation with Parallels. They have such ideas under development for a future version, but it's not available on the current version.
Virtual PC does not run on Intel Macs.

  • Parallels question

How much ram did you allocate for parallels. I have set to 400mb. How much do you use. I have 2mb installed in my computer.

You can use the two-finger touch of the pad to give you a right-click. It needs to be enabled in keyboard preferences in OSX. Parallels recognised it automatically and so right-click works for the touchpad.
    Pretty neat.

  • A Question about Compatibility with Parallels

Hello, all. I wasn't too sure where to post this, and I saw someone else posted a Parallels question here so I figured it wouldn't be a big deal. I have a MacBook Pro 15 Inch that I bought in May this year, and I was wondering if I could use Parallels to install Windows XP on it. I'm not sure if it will work because Apple apparently designed my computer to only work with Windows 7 if I were to install it through Boot Camp, but since I'm not really in the mood to shell out two hundred bucks for that OS, I was hoping I'd be able to just get Parallels and install Windows XP without any post-installation issues (like being unable to connect to the Internet and such, like the problems one would run into through a Boot Camp install if they didn't install the drivers). Could I use Parallels on my Mac instead of Boot Camp and install Windows XP?
Also, I have a minor question that I think I might already know the answer to, but I just thought I'd ask anyway while I'm here. Could Parallels Desktop 4 work with my computer?

               Yes.
Could Parallels Desktop 4 work with my computer?
Verify that you machine meets the below requirements:
Hardware and Software Requirements for Parallels Desktop version 4
    Hardware Requirements
Any Macintosh computer with an Intel processor (1.66 GHz or greater). To run 64-bit
operating systems in virtual machines, an Intel Core 2 or later processor is required.
Minimum 1 GB of memory, 2 GB of memory is recommended.
CPU must support  Intel-VTx Virtualization feature
Almost on all CPUs used in Mini Macs Virtualization is supported, but in several early Mac Mini models it may be disabled in firmware.
Please see article http://kb.parallels.com/en/5653 how to enable Intel VT-x Virtualization support.
Note: Your Mac must have enough memory to run Mac OS X and your Mac applications,
plus the memory required for the virtual machine's operating system and the applications
installed in it.   About 300 MB of disk space on the boot volume for the Parallels Desktop installation.
About 15 GB of disk space for each virtual machine.
    Software Requirements
Mac OS X Leopard v10.5.2 or later
Mac OS X Tiger v10.4.11 or later

  • New IMAC w/Parallels Windows

Unable to load windows programs ? When going to "My Computer" in windows mode, the CD Drive does not appear. There is shown a 31/2
floppy drive, which of course, in not on an IMAC ? From the internet while
speaking to a Macaphee representative, I was able to download and install
the virus, firewall, etc provided by Comcast. It is the software I have left over from my very old PC days I am unable to upload. Using the MAC desktop all systems work properly. ??? Thanks

    Welcome to the Apple Discussions.
You need to go back to your Parallels installation instructions. After installing Windows in the Parallels virtual machine you need to install Parallels Tools, or something of a similar name, which installs the Parallels drivers in Windows that allow it to access the iMac hardware.
A better place to post your Parallels questions is in the Parallels Desktop for Mac forum, since it isn't Apple software.

  • Insert using parallel

what does this last statement mean?  it is as though the query runs just like without any hints.
    oracle doc:
    Using Parallel Execution
    Examples of Distributed Transaction Parallelization
This section contains several examples of distributed transaction processing.
    Example 1 Distributed Transaction Parallelization
In this example, the DML statement queries a remote object:
    INSERT /* APPEND PARALLEL (t3,2) */ INTO t3 SELECT * FROM t4@dblink;
The query operation is executed serially without notification because it references a remote object.

A serial direct path insert was actually faster in that particular case."
Question 2 : Isn’t this a normal behavior of distributed DML where the driving site is always the site where the DML operation is done? And this is why the BUFFER SORT had to buffer all the data from remote to the driving site (local site here)?

  • How to partition 120 GB hard drive MacBook for OSX+Win (BC+Par.)? Fat/NFTS?

After many happy years with my PowerBook G4 12" (I will miss it definitely, as compact and cute as it is ;-() I'll now switch to a new MacBook 2.16 GHz with 2 GB RAM and a 120 GB hard drive.
I will have to use Windows (not yet sure if XP or Vista), as I need special software not available for the Mac, so my choice will be Parallels, so that I can work in Os X and at the same time use those Windows Apps I need.
However, I also want to be able to boot Windows-only with BootCamp, so I already learned I have to install Windows on its own partition.
    So my question is:
How shall I partition the hard drive?
    * If I have one big partition for OSX + documents and the rest (maybe 30 or 40 GB) for Windows, I won't be able to access my documents from Windows, right?
    * So I would have to keep the data I want to access from within Windows on a PC formatted partition (if I don't want to pay for a software like MacDrive)?
Or can Windows running in Parallels read from a HFS partition?
    * Does this mean: if I want to access (read and write) my documents in OSX and Windows, I have to keep them on a Fat32 partition?
-> This could be the partition where Windows is installed (but I'm not sure if I feel comfortable with that solution) of I would need a 3rd partition (Fat32) for data which would cause quite a big "segmentation" of the hard drive.
How did you resolve this problem?
Unfortunately, I don't see that I could really "separate" data I only have to access from Windows and those I only want to access in OS X, so in my opinion for me they all have to be in one place.
    Looking forward to your comments,
    Martin

Running Vista using parallels 6.0. Parallels mounts fine, but when I try to launch Vista I get a blue screen for a few seconds that says "UnmountableBootVolume" I have read on other help forums to clear this I will need to launch Vista from the original software disk by holding down the "R" key or "f3" or "delete" key. None of these work when trying to launch vista with the disk in the cd drive. How do I launch Vista from the original cd on a macbook pro. What is the magic key to make this happen?

  • FW navbar buttons not working correctly in DW

    Hi there,
I have created a navbar in Fireworks with buttons and have exported it to DW. It has rollover behaviours and drop-down menus. I have watched a few tutorials on how to do this and export it to DW. I seem to be doing everything right, but when I preview my html file in the browser or in live view, the rollover behaviours don't work.
Also, I get this issue when I check the Browser Compatibility:
    Unsupported value: 'inline-table'
Affects: Firefox 1.5; Internet Explorer 6.0, 7.0; Internet Explorer for Macintosh 5.2; Netscape 8.0
I would be happy to send my files to anyone willing to help me out.
    Thanks!

    Danke!

Is this a parallel question? http://forums.adobe.com/thread/847161?tstart=0

  • Contacts app defaults back to All Contacts

This is a long term frustration, I just searched a couple of combinations of keywords without finding a relevant thread, maybe not the right keywords used.
In any case, I have over 1700 total contacts, about two dozen groups in Address Book on the Mac. I sync via MobileMe which best I recall requires user to sync all contacts and groups, vs. only specific groups. I only need the 1100 contacts in one group on the iPhone.
But the gripe/question is why Contacts on the iPhone keeps setting itself back to All Contacts. I go into Contacts as an app, or via the phone, and am in the desired sub group, but later on after using the phone if I go back in there, it's jumped back up a level to All Contacts, with the resulting slower display and response times. I know I'm not inadvertently taking it back up there myself. I just need it to stay in that one group all the time.
A parallel question, off-topic a bit, would be how to sync only selected groups to MobileMe? or not possible at this time?
    Thanks! Kudos!

I also have this problem since updating my iphone 5c to 8.3.1, except that I keep resetting the ringtones, and they appear to be set; and then when my phone rings, sometimes it is the previous text tone, or the original default ringtone, and sometimes it is the right ones I have set.   It doesn't correct itself until I power cycle the phone.... It's super annoying because it happens at least once a day... If anyone has a more permanent fix for this please let me know.
    Thx
