Parallels To Run Mac OS

I am running Snow Leopard on a 2009 8core Mac Pro. As some of my graphics software requires Rosetta I have no intention of upgrading to more recent OS X versions. Besides, I enjoy the way Snow Leopard works and do not particularly enjoy many aspects of the newer OS versions.
I have Windows 7 in Bootcamp, needed for some of my software. It works well.
Due to an upcoming update to some software that I use that will only support Mavericks I am considering the option of installing Parallels or VMWare Fusion and running Mavericks in emulation when Mavericks comes available.
Am I mad? Parallels etc is intended for running Windows and Linux on OS X. Is it going to be possible to run OS X 10.9 on OS X 10.6? Would it cause conflicts having 2 OS X versions on the same computer? And because Apple abandoned OS on disks how would I get the new OS into Parallels anyway?
Would appreciate feedback from anyone who is doing something similar.

I may have spoken too soon; as I have never attempted to run Lion or Mt. Lion in Parallels.  I have only used Snow Leopard and Snow Leopard Server in Parallels (and Leopard in Parallels and Tiger in VMWare).
My assumption is that one would have to install Snow Leopard first and then use the App Store to install Lion or Mt. Lion.  But it appears that may not be the method for installing Lion or Mt. Lion into Parallels.  Any experience you both have on this aspect of the subject would be appreciated.  The Snow Leopard EULA prohibits running Snow Leopard in virtualization in Snow Leopard.
Apple separately has contracted with the virtualization companies to keep them from allowing the easy installion of Snow Leopard client into their products, but as Kurt points out there is no such EULA prohibition on us end users from virtualizing Snow Leopard client in Lion or Mt. Lion on a Mac.  It is just difficult to install.
If you can install Lion or Mt. Lion into Parallels directly without the use of Snow Leopard, I have no opinion on this issue, as I have not studied their EULA's.
I had theorized that perhaps Parallels would be able to access Firewire scanners through the Thunderbolt port and I am glad to hear that actually works!  I guess in theory, a Firewire to USB connection can now be made in Thunderbolt as well.

Not moot, if you mean in the sense that it would be a defense to a copyright claim.  "Benefit" may be an element in a "fair use" defense, but in and of itself is not a defense to a copyright violation.

You can run Windows 7 in Parallels. You do not need to run Boot Camp Assistant to install Windows if using Parallels. Visit the Parallels site for instructions regarding running Windows in Parallels.

First let me make it clear my iMac is running native OS X 10.8.5 and all Adobe Creative Cloud Apps are install on the iMac running natively in the OS X system environment. I only have Parallels Desktop 8 for Mac installed to run Microsoft Office software in Windows 7 when needed (because PowerPoint for Mac sucks big time compared to the PC version)… absolutely no Adobe CC Apps have been installed on the Parallels virtual PC environment.
I have been having problems with Creative Cloud Desktop not updating so I uninstalled it and tried to install the latest version from Adobe. I then get the following error:
    We've encountered the following issues:
There seems to be a problem accessing a critical file/directory during download. For troubleshooting tips. please visit our customer support page. (Error code: 204)

This has happened all last week. Because we have been so busy at work I waited until the weekend to contact the 24/7 chat support.
This was going well. I was sharing my desktop with the agent who was adjusting the permissions of some folder. The problem came when he launched chrome on Parallels and not on the MAC and tried to install the PC EXE version of CC desktop. When I pointed this out to the Agent he instantly stop the screen share and stated in the chat box that virtual computers are not supported and I must find my own solution without giving me an opportunity to explain.
Every time I tried to start the chat again I was cut-off while trying to explain that Adobe CC was running natively under a native OS X and the Virtual PC was a separate to this
Only after my 4th attempt (having per cut an pasted my arguement into the chat box) did a get any further. The Agent refused to continue to try and fix my problem but did say the Adobe engineers are aware of the "204" error
Has anyone else had this "204" error installing Creative Cloud Desktop or can  direct me to a solution it would be much appreciated

Unfortunately I am still getting the 204 error
I download the Creative Cloud Desktop App at home and brought it into work to install — which failed
I then tried to install the same file on the only Mac in the office not on Creative Cloud and it installed with out any problems
I then tried plugging my iMac into the same ethernet socket incase it was a problem with the ethernet socket. No luck it still had the 204 error
These are the Adobe download log files which show errors but they me nothing to me

Thanks for your observation. I realize they are different versions, but when I use the "Software Update" menu, this is as far as it would update. Is there some way to update the iMac beyond what "Software Update" does? I've tried it several times.
    Please Note.
Upgrading OSX 10.6.8 (Snow Leopard) to 10.8.3 (Mountain Lion) is not an update. It is a paid upgrade. Just as with 10.7 (Lion) you must purchase it from the App Store with yor Apple ID and install it after backing up your current computer state for safety.

  • Can i run Mac OS X on Mac Mini under a "bare metal" Hypervisor?

Unfortunately, I can't leave Windows because of heavy amount of legacy software which cannot be easily transfered to Mac OS X (for example, databases running on MSSQL).
On the other side I like Mac Mini hardware for its size, noise level and power consumption and want to try Mac OS X (buying it only to replace Max OS X with Windows would be insane).
So, to avoid buying a separate computer, I want to run both operating systems simultaneously under a "bare metal" Hypervisor (VMWare ESXi, Hyper-V etc.).
Using BootCamp to run either Mac OS X or Windows doesn't fit my needs. Running Windows as a guest OS in Parallels - doesn't fit them too.
Both OS should be able to run at the same time, and Windows should be on 24h a day.
I know that a hypervisor can be installed on Mac Mini. I know also that running Windows on it won't be a problem.
The only question is - will the Mac OS X Lion run under hypervisor?

VMWare ESXi should support Lion and Mountain Lion, both in terms of it having been done and beeing allowed by Apple's license.
Note: Apple's license only allows hosting two virtual OS X machines on a single host.
In addition to ESXi, there is also Parallels Server for Mac Bare Metal Edition. See http://www.parallels.com/uk/products/server/mac/baremetal/technical-resources/ I merely mention it for completeness, I would stick to ESXi since it is 'free'.
You could consider running OS X as the host operating system and Windows as a guest VM using VirtualBox. VirtualBox can be configured to start automatically and invisibly on the Mac host. You could then use Microsoft RDP to connect to the running VM. Its services like SQL Server would of course be running and accessible as normal.

  • Use parallels to run windows with iMac as monitor

This is a complicated question, so please read everything. I have a new late 2012 Mac Mini. On the Mac Mini, I had MS Windows installed with Bootcamp so I could run a 3d cad program. I want to use my iMac 21 inch computer in target display mode as the monitor for this. I hooked up the mini to the iMac with a thunderbolt cable and started both machines up. The Mac Mini is set to boot up in the windows side of the partitioned hard-drive. Because of this, the iMac doesn't respond to the mini when hitting the command/F2 key to try to place the iMac in target display mode. I could try to start up the Mini on the apple side of the partitioned hard-drive and see if I can get target display mode to work with the iMac, but that doesn't solve my problem, which is, that I need to use the windows side on the mini with the iMac as the display.
So, I'm wondering if I switch from Bootcamp to Parallels to run the windows partition, will this solve the problem. I'm thinking, that because you can switch back and forth between the window and apple partitions in Parallels without having to reboot, I can start both computers up, place the iMac in target display mode, then switch to the windows side and work there... all using a thunderbolt cable.
I've been on the phone with Apple support, and they don't know for sure if this will work, but they think it's worth a try. I'd rather do this than have to buy and use a monitor for the Mini. HAS ANYONE DONE THIS AND HAD SUCCESS??? IS THE CABLE AN ISSUE HERE? IF THIS DIDN'T WORK, DID YOU FIND ANOTHER WAY?
Thanks, and I look forward to hearing from anyone who can shed light on this.

I am purchasing a new Mac-Mini and want to run Parallels Desktop for Mac. I previously was using Virual PC for the Mac. Does anyone know whether I can use the windows professional onthe Virual disk to load windows in the Parallel program?

The short answer is technically yes, but not easily (depending on your threshold of "easily") and more headache than it may be worth. Check out the following threads (one from the Parallels support forums, the other from elsewhere in Apple Discussions that offer input and a solution. For the steps in the post in Apple Discussions you do need a copy of Windows running somewhere for this to work.

Also - although doing this is technically possible, I'm not sure you wouldn't be in violation of the Virtual PC EULA in doing so.

  • Parallels performance on Mac Pro

I'm strongly considering a Mac Pro purchase to replace not only a Dual G5 but also a Dual Core Pentium Dell. I run large format posters and prints from my home office. I only have the Dell because the RIP software (Roland Versaworks) is Windows only. Can anyone running Parallels on either a 3GHz or 2.66GHz give me some insight as to performance of ANY apps that you may be using Parallels for.
My setup would include either the 2.66 or 3GHz, 4GB RAM and the 250GB HD for starters. I'm going to customize storage with HD I purchase seperately.
It would be real nice to be able to get those two heaters from under my desk!

The folks at Parallels have said they will release an

    Not 100% correct.
From the Admin user go into the terminal and enter
    sudo nvram boot-args="-legacy maxmem=XXXX"
where XXXX is a number. Parallels suggest 1024 or 2048, but for me I had to go-to 4096 before it worked. Then reboot. This puts the Mac Pro back into 32 bit mode.
You can then start parallels again and create & run your virtual systems.

  • Parallels Program for Mac

am looking to purchase a new computer for my business and with the Specs it has to have Windows 8.  I would love to be able to purchase a Mac but wanted to
see if anyone has had any experience with the Parallels program running Windows on the Mac?
    thanks!

    1.  You do have the ability to purchase a copy of Windows 8 and install it to the mac using bootcamp.  Then the computer would boot up to windows, and operate as a windows machine until you reboot to OS X.
    2.  Parallels and VM Ware fusion are both good products, which allow you to run Windows (and other OS's) within OS X.  There is a performance hit (system slows down) depending on the amount of ram you have, but it is fine for most software.

Is there a preference I can change or some kind of app or program I can download that will help me with this issue? This is extremely problematic for me as I am searching for files all day everyday. Thank you!

    Hello,
It isn't the fw in Network you want o use or look at, that's for something completely different.
My first suspect is the Power Adapter on the LaCie has gone.
At the Apple Icon at top left>About this Mac, then click on More Info, then click on Hardware>Firewire, what is listed there?
    Reset the Firewire bus
If your Firewire or USB isn't recognizing any device.  A solution which has worked for some whose hard drive became invisible in 10.4 was simply to follow these four steps to reset the Firewire/USB bus:
    1. Shut the machine down.
    2. UNPLUG the power lead to the computer and any firewire/USB drive or devices.
    3. leave it for 10 minutes.
    4. Connect back up and reboot.
