Parallels to the rescue with Windows7 install

I was trying to install Windows7 beta on a fresh HD. I wanted to make a Boot Camp disk and install Windows 7 beta. I used the procedure per Boot Camp Assistant but when it rebooted with the Win7 disk in the drive all I got was a black screen with the numbers 1) and 2) on the screen and a question asking me to choose an option! No explanation just choose door number one or door number two!
To make matters worse, I could not choose anything. I plugged in a USB keyboard and mouse but no luck. My Bluetooth keyboard was also useless. Huh?
So I thought that at least Parallels might help since it would use the keyboard drivers ok.
I created a new Virtual Machine and chose Express Install. I gave it my product key and walked away. In a few minutes (~15 mins?) I had a working Win7 installation! (64 bit version)
It was easier to install Windows in Parallels than in Windows!
I used Parallels 4 with the latest update (the update process worked great) and I only have 3 Gigs of RAM installed.
I was only testing Win 7 and since it wont run any games that depend on Punkbuster I won't use it for my primary Boot Camp. I still have a working Boot Camp drive with XP on it for that. When Win 7 is finally released I'll investigate it again for Boot Camp compatibility but until then Parallels is just fine for me.
Thanks Parallels

Hello Hatter -
Thanks for the awesome advice and tips. Per usual, you redefine Apple Forum hospitality!
I will indeed look into the tutorials you passed along. As for the Server 2008 - that's going to be a long, new learning curve to me.
I was just learning about Windows server in my last tech. job - but I know nothing about Windows Server 2008. I barely had a grasp of some of Active Directory - and that was a year ago...
The hatter wrote:
http://blogs.vmware.com/teamfusion/2009/01/windows-7-on-mac-with-vmware-fusion-a -practical-guide.html?eurl=http://www.youtube.com/myvideosedit2
Fusion doesn't yet support Windows 7, but using Server 2008 configuration (and turning off 3D) it can be loaded.
No prob for me, I've bailed-out on Fusion. I like it for emulation, but I won't use emulating software - as it ignores my video card - a $2000 tax I'm not ready to pay for emulation... And I need 3D - as that is what SolidWorks is all about.
You and I have pre-2008 Mac Pro with EFI32, the screen is the UEFI 2.x menu which needs to be edited, which I have not managed. Or, install Vista SP1 and do an upgrade in place; or, install 7 on another drive / partition while running Vista which works.
I'm hopeful something can be done!!! I'd really like to use Windows7 64bit within BootCamp - once W7 comes out of Beta. It's my only hope for true 64bit unless I cave and purchase Vista 64bit. I'm just gun-shy of Vista - all those nasty bits about drivers and fuss and all...
But your last bit of advice grabs me: "install 7 on another drive..." (other than my BootCamp drive, right?) - then partition another drive for use with 7? I'm a little foggy on what you're suggesting there - sorry
:-P
I'll watch the tutorials and give things a try - AFTER I pass my CSWP test in a week - and can afford the down time to do all of this.
Cheers -

I'm using Parallels 3.0 and plan on buying an iPhone. The most important feature is the synch with my Outlook in Windows XP. I'd rather use my docking station than buying further Exchange Server Stuff.
    Does the synch work reliable?
    Greets Till

I have an iphone and was told that the surface rt cannot be sycned to my iphone like my

  • How do I update/restore my phone to a different version with no internet access on the machine with iTunes installed?

I have downloaded the version of iTunes needed, and the iOS version I wish to use from work, but am unable to restore the version of iOS as iTunes seems to be blocked at work, and I do not have internet at home, aside from on my phone.
Thanks in advance for the help!

You can ONLY restore to the latest available software.
If you have ios 5 on your iphone you can update from the iphone itself.
Otherwise you would need to restore from a computer with itunes and the internet.

  • Name of the table with all installed add-ons

Hi, I think my question may sounds weird, but I would like to know if someone know the  name of the table which contains all installed add-ons on a computer (I would like to know the datasource of the window 'Add-ons administration').
    Thanks in advance, François

    Hi there,
I think the table structure goes as follows:
    Company DB:
    - OARI (addons assigned to that company).
    - ARI1 (users assigned to company addons).
    Sbo-Common DB:
    - SARI (list of registered addons).
That might not be exact but I'm sure you could get it clarified by SAP if you need..
    Hope this helps.

I would like to continuously read values on FP-AI-100 while my sequential program is running. When I put the VI out of the sequence, the value is only read once, at the end of the sequence. I'm using Fieldpoint devices and can send my program to anyone could help me.

I can't test demobox.vi but I made 2 parallel while loops ; the first one execute then the second, but never both at the same time... I join my program if you want to look at ; (step five of the sequence)

  • HP laserjet 1200 using windows7, cabled to the printer with a usb to parallel adapter

HP laserjet 1200 using windows7. My computer has USB ports, but no parallel port, so the computer is cabled to the printer with a usb to parallel adapter. Sometimes works fine, sometimes system states printer as ready, but will not print. Reboot hardware and on restart, I got one page to print. Next attempt to print puts the document in cue, but just sits there -- no error message. Finally, after multiple restarts, I got it to print (have no idea how), but now I had to print 20 pages one page at a time. It will not print more than one page, even if I select to print 20. Next time I start the computer I don't know if the printer will print. Do you need to use the same USB port each time, Or are the USB to parallel adapters undependable?
    This question was solved.

    Hey renradd!
Unfortunately, parallel to USB adapters can be undependable. Other than a new printer, I'm not sure what would provide you with a fix for this problem. You might try another adapter if you have one, but if that still doesn't work I would look into a printer that your computer could support.
    Hope this helps!
If I have solved your issue, please feel free to provide kudos and make sure you mark this thread as solution provided!

  • HT4818 Can you use both Bootcamp and Parallels with the same Windows 7 installed

I have Parallels installed with Windows 7.  Can I use both Bootcamp and Parallels on the same machine depending on whether I just want to work in Windows all day (Bootcamp) or alternate during the same session (Parallels)?

You can, yes. But there is a complication: once you activate windows it will only be activated for one of the two methods you use. So, let's say you install into boot camp and activate windows. You can then install Parallels and it will find your boot camp installation, but when running in Parallels, Windows will report that it is not activated. Or, you can activate it in Parallels and when running in Boot Camp Windows will report that it is not activated. The reason for this is because Windows thinks it is running on different computers depending on how you boot it. This may not be an issue for you if you run Windows a lot one way and just occasionally the other way, so be sure to activate Windows in whichever method you use more often. Hope this helps!

  • I just installed the new CC apps. Since they get installed parallel to the old ones instead of upgrading, do I un-install the old ones with the un-install app in the old folder?

I just installed the new CC apps. Since they get installed parallel to the old ones instead of upgrading, do I un-install the old ones with the un-install app in the old folder?

    Easyebe,
Are you using a Mac machine or Windows PC?
If using a Mac machine, go to Application-->Utilities-->Adobe Installer-->old apps names and run the uninstaller for old apps.
If you are using Windows PC, go to Control panel-->>Program and Features and uninstall the old apps.
It will uninstall everything related to old apps, but your setting must be imporated to new version of apps.

  • Issues with a T61 harddisk, UNMOUNTABLE_BOOT_VOLUME, cannot also get in the Rescue and Recovery

    Dear Lenovo Support Community,
I have a T61 with XP pro on it. This is the history of my harddisk problems with it:
(the harddisk is HDD0 Fujitsu MHW21160BJ G1 and everything in laptop (HW and SW) are same as the factory sold one)
    1. Unfortunately I had not made any recovery cd/dvd when the computer was healthy
    2. Some time ago, after a crash, and during the chkdsk in the following boot up, harddisk showed 12kb bad sector
    3. Due to more crashes and not being able to login once, went to rescue & recovery and only recovered OS to an old and healthy state. Kept my data, lost all the new programs installed but got the OS fine and running. --> I guess the bad thing that may have happened is that recovered OS may have used those bad sectors as well, but this is just a guess.
    4. Problems, slow downs, the 12kb bad sector, issues kept coming back every couple or few weeks. Repeated the rescue and recovery OS installations another two times.
    5. Few days ago, all was good, but needed to restart, but this time a blue screen came up with UNMOUNTABLE_BOOT_VOLUME. This screen comes up even if I try to go into safe mode, with networking, or even with only DOS prompt.
    6. Tried to go to rescue and recovery (version 4), it took a really long time and was telling me that something wrong with the file \minit\setupapi.log and after a long long time that it got in the page for rescue and recovery, it was not doing anything by clicking on any of the buttons.
    7. Took the hard out, connected it through an external enclosure to another computer, the main drive could not be read at all, I/O error, not distinguishable.
    8. But the SERVICE drive was understood and I could even run chkdsk /F F:\ on it and it repaired the file mentioned above (\minit\setupapi.log).
    9. Put the hard back into T61, went to rescue & recovery, this time the error on the file was not showing up, but since the step #8, I have not been able to get pass the initial screen of rescue & recovery. It doesn't go in at all.
    10. Found it through Google search, the famous post on this forum about fixing the Master Boot Record. Got the little program, burned on a CD, went through all of its steps, finished as described in the famous thread, but I am not sure if it has been any help to me so far.
    11. In few other occasions, connected the hard through the external enclosure to another computer and found online and used programs like Disk Doctors Windows Recovery Data and EASEUS Data Recovery Wizard and was able to just read inside both NTFS main disk and FAT32 service disk (windows can also read the service disk but cannot read the main disk). Using the free version of EASEUS, I could even read and save my personal data since my last backup, so I am good to even format the T61 hard but still I don't want to give up on that.
    12. While the lenovo harddisk is in it, in a restart went to BIOS (F1) and ran the harddisk diagnosis, It said: "Pass: Controller Diag, Error code 0000: Read verification failed". And after the "Test complete", it gave a red message in the middle of screen that "<<< An error was found. Call for service >>>"
    13. As mentioned in #1, I don't have Lenovo's recovery Windows XP CD(s) for T61, but I have some other windows xp installation CD's, I thought I can put them in CD drive, boot up from CD, and try to recover or repair the windows, It seems that they tell me there is no harddisk in your computer!! When I press "R" to go to recovery console, it tells me: "Setup did not find any hard drives installed in your computer."
My questions for dear members of this forum are:
    1. Can I recover my T61 harddisk with the above description? It is being read nicely with the recovery programs, so it should have not been damaged seriously. Please guide me to other things that I can try?
    2. I can see and read the Service part of the drive from Windows (no recovery program needed) while connecting the drive through external enclosure to another computer. Can I run a program from the Service part of disk and make those T61 Recovery CD and DVD?
    3. If I purchase the Recovery CD(s) from Lenovo, would they be doing any magic or help in my case described above?
    4. Can I make recovery CD(s) from another T61 laptop and use them for mine?
Thanks all for reading my long post and helping me. God Bless.
    Best Regards,
    AL_K

    Step One: Install windows
    Step Two: run system update
Step Three: Your done (optionally have a beer and relax)
Sorry, step three was a bit of humor I added.
Actually these recovery CDs were produced before the first T61 was made, probably in 2006. The T61 line was replaced in 2008.
You can activate with the code on your COA, I've done it many times, just make sure you do a full (new) installation, not an upgrade, from an oem disc.
If you do end up using the original product recovery disc set, your steps are more like this...
    1. Install disc one...   wait 30-60mins
    2. Install disc two...   wait 30-60mins
    3. Install disc three...  wait 30-60mins
    4. Install disc four...   wait 30-60mins
    5. Install disc five...  wait 30-60mins
    6. Install disc six...   wait 30-60mins
    7. Install disc seven...   wait 30-60mins
    8. Install disc eight...  wait 30-60mins
    9. download latest service pack for windows and install (over an hour)
    10. Install (replace old version)  system update and run.
    11. go to windows update and update several years worth of patches and hotfixes. (1-4 hours)
    12. kick back and have a warm beer and cold pizza, if there is any left after I finished hours ago and celibrated already.
Also, after going through all that, you've not only installed windows, then replaced nearly the entire operating system, but you've also used valuable harddisc space to make several redundant copies of the outdated files, drivers and apps.
Please understand, I'm not saying the recovery discs are a bad design, they work great, and back in 2006-7-8-9 I'd happily go through all that work, but today all the stuff on them is to old so it's futile to go through all that. It would be really nice if Lenovo updated the install discs, and we could download the latest version to use, but they basically just leave them untouched after the model line is released, so nothing on that disc is newer then about 2006.
I'll also add that both George and I have done this well over 100 times each, so we wouldn't be suggesting this if it wasn't the best option, but in the end you'll have a working system no matter which route you take to get there, so the only question to ask yourself is...
Do you like your beer cold and your pizza hot
Good luck, and enjoy your endeavours

Please stop asking about that on this forum.
There are plenty of informations on the Internet if you want to do it but nobody here will help, because is against the forum's rules.
And, you can't buy Mountain Lion if you do not have a Macintosh with at least Snow Leopard installed.
There is no physical media. Mountain Lion is provided by Apple through the Mac App Store.

  • Can I uninstall parallels 5 from a mac book with lion installed

can I uninstall parallels 5 from a mac book with lion installed

Just to add to the conversation with some helpful information.
Prior to install i was more worried about finding a Quicken replacement than anything (decided on iBank).  I installed Lion and then realized as I was going through my system that Parallel 5 set up for my previous employer.  As suspected, it did not work. So I upgraded Parallels planning to eventually set it up again in the future including reinstalling the version of windows.  When I finally logged on with after the upgrade, all my files, etc. was still there.  Shocking but true.  Double check to see if this occured with any one else.  Good luck.
