Parallels vs. Fusion - Which is better (lighter) on my Mac?

Can someone give me insight into which is cleaner on my Mac?
Which one works better with the mac?

Having just gone from Parallels Desktop to Fusion 3, I can tell you that Fusion 3 is much easier on the system.
I own both of them and have since they came out. I haven't used Fusion as much because the early versions had bugs that would take 100% of my CPU, even when Fusion wasn't actually running. Plus, Fusion advertised accelerated graphics but, after purchasing, informed me that my Macbook didn't qualify for that.
Fusion puts its program files where they are supposed to go. Parallels Desktop puts the files all over the place, which makes it very difficult to uninstall.
Both programs put files where they are supposed to go. Both put the application portions in /Applications and the system portions in various system folders. Because both rely on system extensions, both need to be uninstalled using provided uninstallers.
Parallels Desktop relies on third-party software. Fusion does not.
Considering that both Parallels and Fusion are 3rd party software, what's the difference?
I am of the view that Fusion is far superior to Parallels Desktop in every aspect.
I am very suspicious when people claim that Fusion is far superior to Parallels. I have them both and I can state for certain that they are pretty much equivalent. Fusion did have some serious bugs in early versions but those seem to have been fixed.
I use and prefer Parallels. I have 8 Parallels VMs that I use on a regular basis to do everything from web site development to writing embedded software. It has never failed me - not even once. Fusion has failed me on a number of occasions when I've tried to get some value out of a license that I purchased, but didn't use.

  • Paralles vs Fusion which is better for PC gaming?

Has anyone used either of these platforms for gaming and which do you think works better. Sounds like parallels since it appears faster, based on the discussions on this board, but curious.
    Thanks.

I assume you are asking for the intention of running this on an MBA? Either one is going to be terrible on the MBA for any sort of 3D gaming. This machine is really not what you want for playing games.

  • Which is Better? Mac or PC?

    Which is Better?
Intel iMac   Mac OS X (10.4.5)

    Hello,
I'm not going to argue that a Mac is better, but I do have a response to:
looking computers and the software is great however
they have major compatibility issues. for example
many websites do not support mac's Ex.
    www.aircanada.com
I have never had any problem exchanging documents or viewing web pages with the Mac.
All my document exchanges have worked flawlessly, and work going both to and from Windows PC's.
But, you need to make sure you are using the right program on the Mac if you want to share files with PC users.
As for the website compatibility, the site you provided as an example will work just fine. They just don't want you to know it.
What that website is doing, is running a check to see what web-browser you are using. Beyond that, they are also running a check to see which computer you are using.
So, what you need to do is make sure that your browser tells their website what it wants to hear.
So, in Safari, you can use the "Debug" menu to have Safari report itself as the Windows version of Internet Explorer.
Go to the Debug menu, then pick "User Agent", then choose: "Windows MSIE 6.0".
If the site still won't load, then go to the site first, and perform the selection again from the Debug menu.
Basically, what you are doing is changing what Safari identifies itself as.
Additionally, the website that you listed does list that it is compatible with Mac OS 9.0 or later. So, it should work provided you pass it's checks.
If for some reason it still won't work, contact them since they say that it is compatible with the Mac.
The only sites that absolutely will not work with a Mac are sites that use "Active X" to take over control of your computer or communicate directly with the operating system. Fortunately, those sites are getting rarer and rarer.
The only site I've run across in recent times that uses Active X is Microsoft's Windows Update site (which you wouldn't need with a Mac anyway).
As for enabling the "Debug" menu in Safari, if it is not already there, you can do that by:
    Closing Safari
Open "Terminal" which is located at:
Hard Drive --> Applications --> Utilities --> Terminal
Then type the following at the command line:
    defaults write com.apple.Safari IncludeDebugMenu 1
If you would prefer an automated method of enabling the Debug menu, you can always download the free Safari Enhancer program which includes a setting for this feature:

  • Which is better (Boot Camp) or (Parallel / VMware Fusion)???

    Hi guys,
I want to install Windows along OS X...
    now what is better?
to install Windows via Boot Camp or via Parallel / VMware fusion??
and if through one of the virtual machine softwares, which is BETTER?? the Parallel for Desktop or the VMware fusion one???
    Thank you

I use both boot camp and vmware fusion. A neat feature of vmware fusion is you can access your boot camp partition as a virtual machine from vmware. This way, you can have both. I believe parallels might also let you do that but I have never used it. This has been helpful to me if I need to access a file from the boot camp partition quickly and easily without rebooting my computer.
I agree with dwb that xp is probably going to be the best os to run through a virtualization software.
I honestly don't think you can go wrong with either parallels or vmware fusion. There is also a FREE software package created by sun called VirtualBox.
Here is the link to there home page: http://www.virtualbox.org/
I hear and read that it is excellent as well.
    Hope this helps.
I just installed parallels and you can use your bootcamp partition for the vm with parallels as well. Its pretty slick. Use it for light applications with parallel, reboot to bootcamp for graphics intensive ones.
    Cheers.

I want to use microsoft office on my mac. I need it to run on windows platform. Which is better: boot camp or parallels 7 ?

    Welcome to Apple Communities
You can install Office for Mac. If you don't want it, Boot Camp uses all the hardware, so it has the best performance for Windows, and Parallels allows you to run Windows in Mac without reboot and without Boot Camp. To use only this, download Parallels

  • Which performs better for windows development, bootcamp or parallels?

I have an imac at home and am using parallels to host a w7 vm, wherein I do some web and db development.  It is quite sluggish at times.  I think i may need to tweak the config to perhaps allocate more ram to it but i'm not sure.  I just picked up a macbook pro gen2 i7 and before I install a w7 vm or parttition i was wondering which is better, parallels or bootcamp?  I do like the interactivity that parallels gives me with respect to files between the w7 vm and lion, but am wondering it that is perhaps the achilles heal when it comes to performance.
what's the preferred route by other developers out there?
    Thanks!

that's what i thought.  thanks for confirming.  it sounds like i might be able to use parallels ALSO later on to access the windows bootcamp partition, based on reading another thread.

  • Knoll light factory or Optical flares, which is better for Lens Flares?

Before I spend my money, I'd like to know which one has better lens flares, which is better etc. etc.
That's really not a smart question, if I may say so. Both feature an editor that allows you to construct pretty much any flare you like. You really should download the demo of Knoll and try for yourself and then compare that to OF by looking. The rest of the process is more you needing to understand how flares work and how to make them look good. That is exactly Navarro's point - you could have thousands of presets but none of them might be usable in a given situation because they are all to flamboyant and more fiction than reality. in such a situation, the tool creating them doesn't really matter much...

  • Parallels/VM Fusion and BootCamp compatibility

I have a MacBook running Tiger (10.4.10) which has been partitioned via BootCamp so that it also runs Windows XP.
I'm now considering also getting Parallels or Fusion so I can switch back & forth between the two platforms without a reboot, and understand that I will have to add another gig of memory to this laptop in order to have 2 gig available. (This is the "middle" MacBook of the three.)
My question: I just bought a new (on disc) copy of Windows XP so I could install it via BootCamp. Would I have to buy ANOTHER XP to use with Parallels/Fusion, or can they work with the one I already have on this machine? (Don't much like the idea of having to fork out twice for the same OS on the same computer.)
I will be very grateful if someone can answer this for me, so I know whether to go ahead with a virtual programme or not. Many thanks -

    I have read that -
Parallels was making it possible to activate under Parallels again, but would be able to use both, if using XP but maybe not Vista which is where Microsoft supports Business or Ultimate but treats a VM as a normal license activation.
You should be okay, but check forums.parallels.com and www.vmware.com fusion forums and you could try out Fusion 1.1 beta which is what I was using.

  • Parallels or Fusion from Bootcamp?

After looking around at possible ways to run Windows on my Macbook... I was wondering which would be better to use my already existing BootCamp partition: Parallels or Fusion?
Both are roughly the same price, and I just wasn't sure which would be best to run Windows Vista Home Premium through Virtualization.

I would go with Fusion for Vista.

  • Which is better an android or apple

Which is better getting an android smart phone or an Apple I Phone?

As the poster Horses 547 said its a matter of personal preference. However I own and use both. Printing via air print is smooth and easy on an iphone. Printing on a android phone is iffy and tedious and you will have to find an app to print since there is no native app to do so. I purchased http://www.printhand.com which costs around $12 from the app store. but it is in my opinion the best printing app out there for android. I use it on my android tablet as well and its great. This company is the maker of the print app on iphones.
The iphone is a little harder to put your own ringtone on the device. However very easy from the Itunes you put on your computer and hook into.
Another thing an iphone does is if you use their cloud service or pay for a song it is available on all your ios devices. Iphone, ipad, or ipod or up to five computers registered through itunes on those computers.
Google play music also can sync with all your android devices.
Iphone don't have external Micro SD card slots, so the storage on the phone is all you have.
Iphones use imessage which does not count against your text allotment  to another iphone or ipad user. it send regular text to non iphone users.
Another thing is Face Time but I found a better program called oovoo at http://www.oovoo.com or in the Google Play Store for free.
Iphones are paper thin but I have an android that has a larger view area and is also paper thin and light. Depending on the android phone it may have a removable battery, whereas iphones are sealed as are some new androids. I have found the sound for music better on my iphone, and videos are crystal clear. Again on some better androids the music and video is comparable .
There is really not many differences but it up to the user.
One last good thing is iphones are updated via Apple, no long waits for OS updates like is done with Android devices, and android devices on Verizon.

  • Which is better - Mac book pro or air book ?

Which is better a Mac book pro or an air book.  What is the pros and cons in using ??

It depends on your preference and how you will use it. Example, if you're a designer, engineer, doing a lot of video editing, sound editing, then you'll appreciate the horsepower the Pro which means "Professional" can offer you. If you're a student, or someone who'll be using primarily for document making or presentation, then the Air would fit you, plus a bonus with the name Air which means "ultra light". The big difference though is the processing speed of the two laptops. The Pro uses full processor speed, while the Air for thermal concerns uses a slightly slower processor.
Good Luck picking the one which will suit you

  • Which is better for gaming and why?

    Hi,
I was researching budget gaming laptops(around $1000, INR 55000) and came up with two choices.....
    1)HP Pavilion g6z-1d00 Notebook PC
    http://shopping2.hp.com/en_US/home-office/-/products/Laptops/HP-Pavilion/A2B39AV?HP-Pavilion-g6z-1d0...
    2)HP Envy 14-2130nr Notebook PC
    http://shopping2.hp.com/en_US/home-office/-/products/Laptops/HP-ENVY/QE295UA?HP-ENVY-14-2130nr-Noteb...
Could anybody please tell me which is better for gaming (main purpose and best performance)?
The HP Envy looks great but I don't know much about AMD Quad Core.....
Also, is it possible to upgrade the graphics card on the HP Envy ( AMD Radeon 6630 to a better one) via a HP centre?
It seems to run most games quite well, but I need it to be able to play new games for at least 4 years more (college), while not factoring in the costs for any possible graphics card upgrade....
    Please help!!

    Thanks Huffer _ very useful.
I wasn't aware that there was a heat problem with the i7 processors, my dv8 runs at around 42 to 52 degrees, mind you I don't really put it under much load. I use it to play Blu-ray ISO files on my projector and for photo editing (Adobe CS4), it's an 820QM.
I have also changed the thermal compound to ICDiamond and drilled holes in the speaker cover to improve air flow, that made a difference too.
     @ abhishekmaha
Don't take my comment to seriously, although I think it has some truth to it, it was meant to poke a bit of fun at you.
Heat has always been one of the biggest factors when it comes to any computer, designers try to make them thinner, lighter and cheaper and those types don't work for gaming very well. They're OK for the occasional one, but not on a regular basis. I believe that if you game on any machine that was not meant for it, you will not get 4 years out of it _ 2 years.
I wish I could tell you different, but I am not going to lie to you.
Heat basically affects 3 things on a laptop, the solder that holds the components on the motherboard, any mechanical moving parts, eg the hard drive, fan _ and the battery. You can remove the battery to prolong its life when gaming.
Heat breaks down the solder over time and the mother board simply stops working as far as the hard drive, it stops spinning because the tiny bearing(s) in there dry out and seize up.
If you don't want to use a cooling mat then prop up the back of the laptop, hanging it over the edge of the table will expose the fan intake, but will block off other vents.
60 degrees is a bit warm too, 50 is better or rather, the cooler the better. What ever machine you get, make a note of what the temps are when you first boot up and when it's hot. The idea is to get an average so you can judge when it is dangerously getting hot.
P.S. Be sure and give Huffer a kudos too.

  • I wonder which is better

I wonder which is better - Airport Extreme or Time Capsule for use at home.  I have a year old Macbook Pro (10.8 OS), am getting a new Macbook Air for use at work, and will be adding a second ipad.  Originally iI was researching to find an exgternal backup, but the Extreme sounds interesting.

Install under BootCamp and you need to alter the boot sector of the drive.  Also you cannot create any more partitions.
But Parallels can use the BootCamp Windows as is "image", giving you the choice of "how to use it when".

  • In session and call tansaction methods, which is better . why?

    hi
in session and call tansaction methods, which is better . why?

    see the link:
    <a href="http://www.itcserver.com/blog/2006/06/30/batch-input-vs-call-transaction/">batch inpunt VS call transaction</a>
"The most important aspects of the session interface are:
    <b>Asynchronous processing</b>
    Transfer data for multiple transactions
Synchronous database update. During processing, no transaction is started until the previous transaction has been written to the database.
A batch input processing log is generated for each session
Sessions cannot be generated in parallel. The batch input program must not open a session until it has closed the preceding session.
The most important features of CALL TRANSACTION USING are:
    <b>Synchronous processing</b>
Transfer of data from an individual transaction each time the statement CALL TRANSACTION USING is called
You can update the database both synchronously and asynchronously. The program specifies the update type.
Separate LUW (Logical Units of Work) for the transaction. The system executes a database commit immediately before and after the CALL TRANSACTION USING statement.
    No batch input processing log"
I hope I have been able to help you.
    cordial greetings.
