Parameters to be monitored on a RAC Database

Hello,
We have 5 , 3 Node RAC 10gR2 Cluster Databases on HP UX. I want to setup a monitoring on the , using the Grid Control.
Can anyone please let me know What are the parameters or thresholds that I should monitor like any locks , queue waits etc..
Thanks

Hi,
It is very difficult to tell someone what you have to monitor and what the thresholds that you will consider porper or not.
In fact, you must know your environment to know what you want to monitor. Each environment has its characteristic in special.
Not an easy job, but Oracle has facilitated this work by providing some resources.
To know what monitor you need to understand the following concepts:
Metric Thresholds
Some metric thresholds come predefined out-of-box. While these values are acceptable for most monitoring conditions, your environment may require that you customize threshold values to more accurately reflect the operational norms of your environment.
Metric Baselines
Metric baselines are statistical characterizations of system performance over well-defined time periods.
Metric Snapshots
A metric snapshot is a named collection of a target's performance metrics that have been collected at a specific point in time.
Adaptive Thresholds
Once metric baselines are defined, they can be used to establish alert thresholds that are statistically significant and adapt to expected variations across time.
Understanding the concept of how the Grid Control monitors a target. Will be easier for you to monitor your environment.
I recommend you read the chapter System Monitoring

  • Unable to startup 12c RAC database, can't open spfile in ASM

    hello,
I'm testing 12cRAC database on RHEL5 and need your help to troubleshoot and fix the following issue  -
DBCA fails at the end of the configuration to create and startup new RAC database with the following errors
ORA-01078: failure in processing system parameters
ORA-01565: error in identifying file '+DATA/TDB1/spfileTDB1.ora'
    ORA-17503: ksfdopn:2 Failed to open file +DATA/TDB1/spfileTDB1.ora
    ORA-15056: additional error message
    ORA-17503: ksfdopn:2 Failed to open file +DATA/TDB1/spfiletdb1.ora
    ORA-01017: invalid username/password; logon denied
I also tried executing script (which was created by DBCA) to create the new DB  manually and got the same results - it happens during first attempt to start it up using SPFILE after new DB was successfully created (it was started up using pfile)
Clusterware with ASM install was successful, binaries were also installed without issues,
cluster seems healthy, I see correct files within ASM using asmcmd etc ..
got stuck here and need some directions ... very confused by ORA-01017 password error
wonder if anyone had same or similar issues ?
    Thank you !

    Fixed.
Thank you everyone for suggestions and recommendations -
ASM is accessible using asmcmd and I can see all the DB files incuding spfile, they were created by DBCA, alert log showed same information I posted
After extensive troubleshooting and testing the issue was idedntified and fixed - 'dba' group needs to be the primary group for 'oracle' user, not the secondary one. I suspected that something was not right with 'oracle' user access to asm based on that strange password error. There is more I need to check as the issue and fix with swapping groups seems strange. Secondary group is not enough ti have proper rights ??? my first reaction was - seriously ? wtf ?
Anyway - I need to move one now ...
    Thank you again !

  • Can not start Rac database

    Hi,
Oracle RAC database 10.2.0.3/RedHat4 with 2 nodes.
In the begining we had an error ORA-600[12803] so only sys can connect to database I find the note 1026653.6 this note said that we need to create AUDSES$ sequence but befor that we have to restart the database.
When we stop the datanbase we had another ORA-600 and it's impossible to start it!!
Here is a coppy of our alert file:

  • Data Guard configuration for RAC database disappeared from Grid control

After adding a logical standby database through Grid Control for a RAC database, I noticed sometime later the Data Guard configuration disappeared from Grid Control. Not sure why but it is gone. I did notice that something went wrong with the standby creation but i did not get much feedback from Grid Control. The last thing I did was to view the configuration, see output below.

Here are the steps followed to add the standby database in Grid Control
    Maintenance tab
    Setup and Manage Data Guard
    Logged in as sys
    Add standby database
Create a new logical standby database
Perform a live backup of the primary database
Specify backup directory for staging area
Specify standby database name and Oracle home location
Specify file location staging area on standby node
At the end am presented with a review of the selected options and then the standby database is created
Has any body come across a similar issue?
    Thanks,

    Any resolution on this?
I just created a Logical Standby database and I'm getting the same warning (WARNING: No credentials available for target ...) when I do a 'Verify Configuration' from the Data Guard page.
Everything else seems to be working fine. Logs are being applied, etc.
I can't figure out what credentials its looking for.

  • DBA panel not working correctly for RAC databases

I hope this is the correct forum for this stuff... I learned that there is a DBA panel in SQL Developer - which is a great idea. But then, trying it on a RAC database, the output is quite confusing. For example, the init parameters are desplayed twice, or better: once for every instance. But a display column to identify the instance is missing. I assume that the query goes to gv$parameter but doesn't make use of the INST_ID column. Or am I lacking some configuration trick...?

This probably has nothing to do with your problem but something is screwed up in the way CSCC handles Configurator panels.
Converted a panel made for CS6 using Configurator4. Got it loaded into CC. It was not quite right so I made some minor changes. The changes never showed up in CC. Deleted the original folder under Panels, changed the name of the panel and reinstalled. Whoa! The original deleted panel was the only one that showed up under Extensions not the new one. This in spite of the fact that that folder no longer existied.
I have tried all sorts of maneauvers but the fact is that the original panel is the only one that PS recognizes even though it does not exist on the drive. It is locked into PS and nothing I have done will change it.

  • 2 RAC database in the same box

    Hello,
I have a RAC env composed of 2 nodes. The database name is dbfunc1 and it is in 11gR2 version under Redhat Linux 5; this is a test env.
Now we need to create another RAC database in the same hosts with database name dbfunc2 with exactly the same structure, same parameters, etc... this RAC database will be used for the same product but for test level 1 purpose. I am thinking to create an XML template for the dbfunc1 using dbca and then create silently the database dbfunc2.
My question is: is it possible to use the already created and configured listener in the hosts or I must create a new listerenr listeneing on new ports to support the database dbfun2? Perhaps, both DB will use the SCAN listener ...
    Thank you
    Diego

DiegoYou can have both configuration i.e. one local listener for host for both database or two seperate. But as a best pratice you can create seperate listener for new database just to have proper load balancing.
Its obvious that finally SCAN listenr will handover its connections to host listener, so if you have only one then there would be more connection (handle by local listener) as compared to past(when you had only 1 database),
Now you have 2 databases so connections would be more.

  • RMAN backup in ORACLE RAC database

    Hi there,
We are using RMAN backup strategy for taking backups from one node(eg.node1).Database is RAC database, version 9.2.3. and OS is Solaris 5.10.
this is the configuration which we use, as follows:
Connecting to Prod.Database using catalog database.
    rman catalog=rman/rman@CATDB target=sys/oracle@PRODDB(node 2).
    RMAN> show all;
    RMAN configuration parameters are:
    CONFIGURE RETENTION POLICY TO REDUNDANCY 30;
    CONFIGURE BACKUP OPTIMIZATION ON;
CONFIGURE DEFAULT DEVICE TYPE TO DISK; # default
    CONFIGURE CONTROLFILE AUTOBACKUP ON;
    CONFIGURE CONTROLFILE AUTOBACKUP FORMAT FOR DEVICE TYPE DISK TO '/rmanback/_%F';
    CONFIGURE DEVICE TYPE DISK PARALLELISM 5;
CONFIGURE DATAFILE BACKUP COPIES FOR DEVICE TYPE DISK TO 1; # default
CONFIGURE ARCHIVELOG BACKUP COPIES FOR DEVICE TYPE DISK TO 1; # default
    CONFIGURE CHANNEL DEVICE TYPE DISK FORMAT '/rmanback/CMWPROD_%s.bak';
    CONFIGURE CHANNEL 2 DEVICE TYPE DISK CONNECT 'SYS/oracle@PRODDB(node2)';
    CONFIGURE MAXSETSIZE TO 7 G;
    CONFIGURE SNAPSHOT CONTROLFILE NAME TO '/oracle/9.2.3/dbs/snapcf_CMWPROD1.f';
As the above config shows RMAN is connecting to PROD DB (node 2). But we need to take backups (datafiles and as well as archive logs) from two nodes (i.e from node 1 and as well as node 2).
Is there any possibility for taking backups from two nodes?
    Thanks,
    Balu.

  • 10G RAC Database Configuration Querry??

    Hi All,
I have installed the 10GR3 Grid and deployed the Agent to a system which has 10GR2 RAC Database with CRS installed.
    1) When i try to configure the cluster database, should we use the VIP TNS entries as the Connect string or the Physical Node TNS Address.
    2) After i have configured it i do not see Listener shown for either monitoring nor i am able to add manually.
    3) Will any CRS components be monitored through Grid? For Me i dont find any though the CRS HOME oratab entry is enabled.
Please share your ideas and experience.. on this..

    Regards,
DBEdit spfile and set cluster_database=false before starting database in upgrade mode(optionally you can unset other cluster parameters).
So you upgrade using only 1 instance of database.
Once the upgrade is finished start the other instance as well and set cluster_database=true
Also see preupgrade process - http://docs.oracle.com/cd/E11882_01/server.112/e23633/upgrade.htm#i1011979

  • ASM in RAC database

I couldn't find this thing any where..
Are there any mandatory initialization parameters that must be set to start ASM instance in RAC Database?

However, asm_diskstring is really not necessary to be set as it limits the disks for recovery. In most cases, the default value "null string" will be sufficient. It helps to find all disk in operating system that ASM has the read/write access. However, specifying values to it might help you manage the disk group easily as it does not spend much time to find the disks. This can be modified using alter system.Beg to differ. It is often critical that the right diskstring is set in order to ensure that ASM only detects the disks/LUNs/devices that it should be used. Especially as the same set of LUNs will also be used for the OCR and Voting and (possibly even) OCFS2 disks. So you want to make sure that ASM does not "+accidentally+" used LUNs that are not intended for ASM use.
Using ASMLib is one means to "+mark+" disks beforehand for ASM usage... but ASMLib is an optional install (and as far as I know, not included with the EE RAC installation as an option either).

  • TCP.VALIDNODE_CHECKING in RAC Database

    Hello,
I would like to know what is the equivalent of using TCP.VALIDNODE_CHECKING (along with TCP.INVITED_NODES and/or TCP.EXCLUDED_NODES) in an Oracle RAC database (version 11.2.0.2) that uses a SCAN listener.
My understanding is these parameters are used to control which client machines are authorized to connect to a database instance. However, in a RAC cluster, as there will be more than one instance involved, how can I control the client nodes being able to connect to the database or not? Can the above parameters be still used by individual instances in the cluster? If yes, do they have to be same across all the nodes in a cluster? Or is there a centralised option, either provided by Clusterware in general or Scan Listener in particular to implement this feature?
I checked the documentation and forums but could not find any relevant information.
Would appreciate any help / pointers.
    Thanks in advance.

IP address filtering is one of many network security aspects. SQL*Net only addresses the very bare basics - and it does not even do that well. It is not a proper firewall. And a proper firewall, like iptables, is exactly what should be used.
For example, if you check the IP address in the IP header, then you should also check the combination of tcp flags, do state matching, respond to only valid icmp, and so on.
Simply and just checking for a "valid" IP address is an extremely weak and somewhat silly approach to IP level security.
iptables for example can be run on each RAC node. Or the entire cluster can be protected by a heavy grade commercial firewall at network level (access via external firewall needed to access the RAC).
Using SQL*Net to do this.. well, that is a bit ridiculous IMO.

  • Install 11gR2 RAC Database Problem: Invalid source path /.../Datafiles

    Folks,
Hello. I am installing Oracle 11gR2 RAC using 2 VMs (rac1 and rac2) whose OS are Oracle Linux 5.6 in VMPlayer according to the website http://appsdbaworkshop.blogspot.com/2011/10/11gr2-rac-on-linux-56-using-vmware.html
I have just finished installing Grid infrastructure and start to install RAC database 11gR2.
I have downloaded 2 files from https://edelivery.oracle.com as below:
    V17530-01_1of2
    V17530-01_2of2
When I start to install the RAC database using the above 2 files but get the error below:
    [ora11g@rac1 V17530-01_1of2]$ ls
    database
    [ora11g@rac1 V17530-01_1of2]$ cd database
    [ora11g@rac1 database]$ ls
doc install response rpm runInstaller sshsetup stage welcome.html
    [ora11g@rac1 database]$ ./runInstaller

: No such file or directory
    [ora11g@rac1 database]$
As we see the output above, the error is Invalid source path /../stage/Components/oracle.jdk/1.5.0.17.0/1/DataFiles.
    My questions are:
First, are the files V17530-01_1of2 and V17530-01_2of2 the correct files for 11gR2 RAC database ?
Second, how to solve the issue "Invalid source path /../stage/Components/oracle.jdk/1.5.0.17.0/1/DataFiles" ?
    Thanks.

    Folks,
Hello. thanks a lot for replying.
I go up one level ( / ) and run the command again as below:
    [root@rac1 /]# du --max-depth=1 -h
    Its output:
    8.0K ./srv
    83M ./sbin
    9.0G ./tmp
    4.9G ./usr
    157M ./var
    20M ./boot
    8.4M ./bin
    3.3G ./u01
    252M ./lib
    8.0K ./selinux
    12K ./mnt
    16K ./lost+found
    164M ./dev
    0 ./misc
    29M ./lib64
    8.0K ./u02
    100K ./tftpboot
    12K ./media
    0 ./proc
    248K ./root
    0 ./sys
    117M ./etc
    3.3G ./home
    3.5M ./opt
    25G .
    [root@rac1 /]#
As we see the output above, it seems that 25GB disk space is used and /tmp occupies 9GB.
I have remove the files under /tmp but after reboot OS, the same files come up again under /tmp.
Some folks use 12GB for each of their VMs and is enough to install Grid and RAC Database.
    My questions are:
Why my VM with 30GB disk space does not have enough disk space to install RAC database ?
Can any folk help to solve the issue ?
    Thanks.

  • Can I put ALL my applications into one RAC database

    Dear all,
Is it possible to share all of my workloads between a single RAC database or would it be better to run more than one RAC database on the the same cluster if they have very different characteristics (e.g. OLTP vs DSS or sensitive vs non-sensitive data). Oracle seem to imply that they have cut down their number of physical databases drastically but have they been able to do that because the workload is very homongenous, i.e all ERP stuff? Should it be possible to accommodate all workloads by having different instance parameters or does that defeat the object of being able to fail over a service from one instance to another?
    Views/experiences please.

Hi, generally it is possible to put everything into one RAC database, especially if they share the same data. So you do not have to transport data from one database into the other.
Furthermore the resource allocation can perfectly be addressed with the resource manager of the database together with services. The workload has not to be homogenous.
However it might make sense to connect the DSS users to different nodes in the cluster than the OLTP users (via. services).
On the other hand there might be non technical issues which would make seperate databases more attractive. Like Patching could mean downtime of all applications. Like certifications of software, which would not allow you to upgrade your database, like ERP needs 10.2.0.2 while DSS would be better off with 11g) and so on.
There is really no right or wrong.
Still to get the most of the benefits out of a cluster the fewer databases you have.

  • Apply templates to RAC database

    Hi,
We have both production and development templates for our databases that we apply across the enterprise. Different settings let us monitor at different thresholds. These are all for stand-alone single instance setups. Now that we are building out RAC environments, should we create templates for rac instances and then a cluster database? How are you people doing this?
    Thanks
    Alex

Thank you for the reply. There are differences between the templates attached to the cluster database and the instances in the rac database. There are also differences in the templates for the rac instance and the regular non-rac databases. Not much consistency unfortunately.
