Parent control accounts cannot visit "https" urls

I upgrade OS to 10.6.4 and find this problem.
I follow these steps:
1. create a new "managed by parental control" account.
2. Select "unrestricted web access" and enable Safari application
3. Logout admin and loginto the new account. Try to use: https://www.google.com or https://mail.google.com
The progress bar of Safari freezes.
How can I solve this problem?
I did not find this issue under 10.6.3

You may want to check Apples Knowledgebase Article on this... Specifically:
+*https note: For websites that use SSL encryption (the URL will usually begin with https), the Internet content filter is unable to examine the encrypted content of the page. For this reason, encrypted websites must be explicitly allowed using the Always Allow list. Encrypted websites that are not on the Always Allow list will be blocked by the automatic Internet content filter.*+
They don't specifically identify differences from one build to the next, but their KB articles are usually inclusive of the most current version. It is possible if it worked before that it actually shouldn't have and they "fixed" it with 10.6.4.

  • I made my main account a parental control account and when I accessed the account created as admin, at the Parental Control options I deleted my main account and now I can't get back in it. I need help with this problem.

I made my administrator account a parental control account, at the time of creating it, the system asked for my administrator password, to restart the computer, and the new account was created. When I accessed that account at the parental control menu I could see my main account on the list and i deleted the account from that list, and now i'm trying to get back to it but I'm not able to because every time i restart the computer brings me back to the account I created. I searched for help on the web and it says to go to users and select the account I want to restore but I can't do it. Please help.

  • Mac: Firefox software update process will not authorize in parental controlled account-Bug?

    OS: 10.7.5
    Firefox 20
Parental Controlled user account: Firefox and Firefox Plugin processes are checked in parental controls. No other Firefox processes are visible.
When logged into parental controlled account, user launches Firefox from the Dock. Message appears:
You do not have permission to run Firefox Software Update. Admin required authorization.
Admin clicked Always Allow, entered admin name & password. Firefox would not launch.
Logged out of Parental Controlled account.
    Logged in to Admin account.
Launched Firefox. "About Firefox" shows Firefox up to date.
    Logged out.
Logged back into parental controlled account.
    Firefox opens.
Is this a bug or is there some other reason the admin authorization failed?

I have a student that is having the same issue. Whenever she attempts to open Firefox, either from the dock or applications folder, she gets the permission error. I tried this under an admin account and get the same error, and it will not go past it, even with the admin user/pass. A strange icon appears in the dock for a second and the disappears, but Firefox never opens.
We have around 1600 student laptops in the school and I am seeing this on one of them. I have confirmed that she is running the latest version of Firefox and have tried to clear out the preferences, but there don't appear to be any.
Does anyone have anything useful to add to the conversation? Tyler just doesn't seem to be grasping the issue.

  • Can't login to https pages under kids' 'parental controlled' account

I'm trying to login to Netflix under my kids' account. It's parental controlled and only certain applications are allowed, web filtering is on, etc. On trying to login, however, I get "can't establish secure connection to the server..."
Firefox does the same thing; says "the connection was interrupted while loading"
What parental control parameter is causing this? Its also true for other sites, like my bank, etc.

There's a Knowledge Base article that mentions this:
https note: For websites that use SSL encryption (the URL will usually begin with https), the Internet content filter is unable to examine the encrypted content of the page. For this reason, encrypted websites must be explicitly allowed using the Always Allow list. • Parental Control accounts with Simple Finder won't log out

Since upgrading to Snow Leopard, my children cannot logout. The accounts use Simple Finder and have Parental Controls set. To log out, we must Force Quit Finder. How do I fix this? Also, empty Trash does not empty the trash.

enable full finder. go to home/library/preferences and delete the files com.apple.dock.plist and com.apple.finder.plist. then control-option click on finder in the dock and choose 'relaunch'. then start Activity Monitor ((it's in /Applications/Utilities) and force-quit Dock. switch back to simple finder and see if it works better now.

  • Parental control account hangs on login after idle

I've got two parental controlled acounts set up on my kids computer which is running 10.8.3.
If they don't log out and the system locks from inactivity, when they go to log in it hangs. I havent' been able to confirm, but it might only occurr when there time limit is reached while they are logged out.
I can share the screen as an adminitstrator and kill the logind process to recover, but this happens almost every time.
Is anyone else having this issue? Any ideas how to fix it?

I had the same problem. Examining the console log showed that I needed to agree to some terms of service, but no terms of service showed up to agree to. On the iCloud panel I signed out and then signed in again. I had to agree to remove a bunch of stuff to sign out. When I signed in again the terms of service panel showed up and I was finally able to log in. Hope this helps!
    Some error text from console:
    com.apple.iCloudHelper:
    ErrorID = "MOBILEME_TERMS_OF_SERVICE_UPDATE"
description = "This account needs to accept the ToS"
(even though mobileme is gone, I guess the errors haven't been updated)

  • MacBook Pro 15 (Late 2013) - OS X Parental Control Account keep showing in Arabic language!

    Hello,
I brought MacBook Pro 15 (late 2013) at local Apple Store. After setting up Mac, I observed that in Parental Controls, the default account name is showing in Arabic language. I verified Mac language settings and are set to English.
No 3rd party apps installed except Microsoft Office, Adobe Flash Player and VLC Media Player.
Is this new kind of malware?
Any further help would be appreciated. Thank you!

  • Parental Controls: Account Setup

I am trying to set up an account using parental controls for my kids. The one problem I am having is that there are certain files I would like them to have access to from my account (particularly photos from iPhoto and Photobooth). No matter what I do, I can't figure out a way to grant access to these files. Any ideas?

I have not tested this in 10.5.8 but 10.5.6 (I think), found that if you turn off parental controls for that user and then on again, the app will be reset... you may need to go through the allowed list of apps again.

  • Changing home page on parental control account

Set up an account for my five year old. Used parental controls to customize access to select websites. Every time I login, it goes to apple start homepage. From Safari, went to preferences but change homepage is not highlighted. How can I change it?

    Welcome to Apple's discussion groups.
You may need to temporarily change that account to a "standard" one, make the change, then set it back to the more-restrictive setting.

  • Parental control accounts

    Hi,
Please could somebody explain how I would allow my daughter (whose account I have setup with parental controls) to change her desktop background without me having to key in the admin user & password.
    Thanks very much.

hmmm, thanks for your reply, but I don't want to give her access to ALL of system preferences... can I just allow access to the Desktop ?
Non-admin users can only modify system preferences that change their own account settings. No global or other users' settings can be modified from a non-admin account unless the user knows the admin account's password. So if you give her access to the whole System Preferences app, you don't have to worry about anything getting messed up for anyone else.
But if limiting the user's System Prefs access to the Desktop only is what you really want, you can do this with Workgroup Manager, which you can download as part of the Leopard Server Admin Tools.

  • ITunes 10.5 Parental Control Issue - Cannot Disable Check for Updates

We are looking at updating to iTunes 10.5 in a large company.
Normally we add the following key to lock parental controls and disable the check for software updates.
This locked or greyed out the check for updates check box. This does not seem to work in the 10.5 release.
This did work in iTunes 10.4.1.10.
Here is the registry key we are using.
    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Apple Computer, Inc.\iTunes\Parental Controls\Default]
    "AdminFlags"=dword:00000101
    kParentalFlags_Locked
    0x00000001
    1
    kParentalFlags_DisableCheckForUpdates
    0x00000100

Other parental control options seem to work.
    Any suggestions?

  • Parental Control Account-Safari gets a blank window

I have multiple accounts on my machine for my family, and until recently everything has worked fine. I recently upgraded to Lion, and with it noticed that my son's managed account could not load any web pages (in Safari). Pages will attempt to load, hang, and ultimately stop before anything is loaded (no page data shows in the activity/source windows). Most recent Lion update solved nothing.
Everything works fine in my user account, and created a fresh account and works fine there, too. Changed that new account to "Managed", and the problem showed up again. In Firefox, I get the error "The connection was reset while the page was loading". Not sure if it is simply setting it to a managed account that did it, or if it was a specific setting.
Not sure what could be causing this. Related [possibly], several applications keep popping up requesting authorization (like every 5 seconds, no exxageration) such as Logitech Control Center, Techtools Pro, Adobe Updater, etc. regardless of if I authorize.
Any thoughts? Haven't ever encountered a problem like this before.

Same problem here.  My kids account loads blank pages for most websites.  If I make them adminstrators it works fine.  Did you find a solution?  I have this problem now in Mountain Lion but did not have the issue in Lion.

  • Hiding helper applications in a Parent Controlled account

I don't mind having helper applications run in my 5-year-olds' account. I would prefer, however, that they not see the applications. Any suggestions on how to allow the helpers to run without them being accessible to the user?
    Thanks,
    Laura

I still need a bit of guidance with this please.  When I enter the expanded finder and open up the "Kids" Library folder, under Managed Items/My Applications, it lists all the duplicate application shortcuts.  I've deleted these again.  Put them in the trash, logged out and restarted.  Once logging back in, again, I have duplicates occuring. What is going on??  Please help.  I'm not sure what else to try or do.  There has to be a simple fix to this.  Doesn't there?

  • How to enable usage of Jabber (& Google Talk) accounts w/Parental Controls

    Hello all,
As someone who just spent a few hours trying to figure out how to get iChat in a Parental Controlled account to work with Jabber (and Google Talk) accounts, and seeing that there were no good solutions posted on these boards earlier, I just wanted to share a workaround which could potentially work for some people.
You can find the solution posted on my wiki: http://wiki.lensovet.net/EnableJabber_accounts_in_iChat_with_Parental_Controlledaccounts
Of course, the usual caveats apply: make sure you have a backup of all your data before you proceed, and I take no responsibility if things go awry. If you have any questions, please post them as replies to this thread.
Good luck! Hope you find this helpful.

    Hi,
The reason I ask is that in Snow Leopard you can Add the Jabber/Google account's Buddies to the Allow List and they will work.
In Leopard this cannot be done (The Parental Controls vary in this extent).
In either case Bonjour also does not work.
Can you confirm you can Enable your Bonjour Buddy List (even if you have no other Macs) ?
Some people may find it useful to use to call kids, via Bonjour, for Tea or Dinner but still use other features of the Parental Controls.

  • Netboot and a Parental Control managed account

I am trying to set up a group of kiosks (Mac Minis) using NetBoot off of OS X Server 10.5.2. I've created a netbootable disk image with two accounts. One is an admin account, the other is a managed account with Parental Controls.
My thinking was that I could lock down the managed account and limit the websites that can be visited as well as apps that can be launched using Parental Controls. Everything seems to work fine except one important piece. Neither Firefox or Safari can actually access the internet. I always get a connection error from the browsers. If I run network diagnostics, it returns green on all levels. Similarly, in a Terminal window under that same account, I can ping the webservers I'm trying to get to.
Does anyone have any ideas why Parental Controls on that account seem to limit the ability for the browsers to see the Internet? It works fine when the original image is booted locally. Are managed Parental Control accounts not compatible with NetBoot? Any suggestions?

Ok, this gets more interesting. Based on more testing, I believe there is an incompatibility between Netboot and a Parental Control account. I tried doing a port scan using Network Utility (ports 0-1000) in a variety of accounts both local drive boot and Netboot. The results are further below.
For some reason, the Parental Control account on the Netboot device does not see port 80 (http) off the computer it is scanning. As you can see there are three different cases. The http and https protocols are where the discrepancy occurs. Anyone know if this is by design or a bug? I find it hard to believe I'm the only one trying such a solution but this seems to be a pretty significant roadblock.
