Parent controls don't seem to do anything on WRT1900AC?

I'm familiar with the parent control interface having used Linksys routers for years.  But my new WRT1900AC seems to ignore every parent setting I seem to apply.  Any tips?
Thanks in advance for any replies.  Frustrating.

If you have a rescue email address (which is not the same thing as an alternate email address) on your account then the steps on this page will give you a reset link on your account : http://support.apple.com/kb/HT6170
If you don't have a rescue email address (you won't be able to add one until you can answer your questions) then you will need to contact Support in your country to get the questions reset.

When they've been reset (and if you don't already have a rescue email address) you can then use the steps on this page to add a rescue email address for potential future use : http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5620

    Hi Ingrid
Thanks a lot for the response.
That parameter is right now set to "0".
But on reading the documentation for that parameter, it says you should change it only if SAP recommends you to do so.
We checked in our other systems as well and all that is set to "0" as well.
Will that be Ok to change the parameter to a different value?
If yes, what is the value to be used?
    Thanks a lot

  • Parental Controls don't work correctly under Yosemite

I'm having some serious issues with Parental Controls under Yosemite, issues serious enough that Parental Controls prove to be worthless under Yosemite as currently implemented.
This is a clean install of Yosemite upgraded to current version 10.10.1.
    Symptoms:
Using the child's account with parental controls active, when the parental control blocks a website, a dialog comes up offering to allow the parent/admin to approve the site and add it to the exceptions list.  This is nice!  Unfortunately, approving the website DOES NOT add it to the exceptions list... ever.   We discovered this when launching Keynote, which kept trying to connect to an akamai.net server (probably an update check).  We would sign in with the admin account to clear the server, then it would pop up with the same dialog box again.  We did discover that I _can_ add the site via the Parental Controls prefpane, but kind of a pain.  Why have a dialog box pop up if it doesn't actually work.
Time limits don't seem to be obeyed at all in Yosemite, child played on his account for 2 hours despite being set to 1/2 hour a day.
Some apps just lock up on launch (I do NOT use any app controls).  I suspect (but can't demonstrate with certainty) that they are accessing blocked websites in the background.  Two of the hanging apps are Pages and Keynote (current versions), apps I would expect to behave properly.
For now, I have disabled parental controls, as they are worthless in this form and just make for a frustrating experience for all.  It has been disappointing that a feature that used to come in handy (mostly the time limits) has become completely worthless now.

Apple doesn’t routinely monitor the discussions. These are mostly user to user discussions.
Send Apple feedback. They won't answer, but at least will know there is a problem. If enough people send feedback, it may get the problem solved sooner.

  • Parental Controls doesn't seem to work as desired

I've read many threads on this topic, but no solutions that work for me yet. I've setup time limits for both kid's accounts. Initially, I thought they were working. However, after each account "timed out", and I allowed additional time using my admin ID (even 15 minutes extra), the time limits no longer seem to work, at least the bedtime login limits. At first, using exact same settings on each account, and AFTER bedtime, the first account that I had allowed extra time for (2 days ago!) allowed login after bedtime.
Next, I tried this on the second account, allowing only 15 minutes extra time. Now my son can login to that account after bedtime. Looks like I can't trust the bedtime controls.
I've disabled parental controls shut down, used command option PR to clear memory, still same problem
Has anyone been successful using parental controls, or do I just stop trusting it?!?

My daughter's time limits were restricted to 30 min per day only, however she found out that rebooting the Mac, 2 or 3 minutes before her time expired, allowed her to start again with a new 30 min session again... over and over.
Time limits file gets corrupted more often than expected, so I solved my issue with the time limits by recreating the file, as follows:
    a) Login with your credentials, assuming your accounts has Full Admin rights.
    b) Launch a 'Terminal' session. Mine was located at Finder -> Applications ->Utilities -> Terminal
    c) Login as root using your credentials with the following command:
Last login: Tue Mar 23 21:20:02 on console
    imac-3155:~ myadminuser$ sudo su -
    Password:
    imac-3155:~ root#
    d) Now, as root, go to the following directory:
    imac-3155:~ root# cd /Library/Managed Preferences/mydaughtersname/
    imac-3155:mydaughtersname root# ls -al
    total 80
    drwxr-xr-x  10 root  admin    340 May 18 20:49 .
    drwxr-xr-x   3 root  admin    102 May 18 20:45 ..
    -rw-r--r--   1 root  admin     86 May 18 20:45 com.apple.applicationaccess.new.plist
    -rw-r--r--   1 root  admin     81 May 18 20:45 com.apple.dashboard.plist
    -rw-r--r--   1 root  admin   1598 May 18 20:45 com.apple.familycontrols.contentfilter.plist
    -rw-r--r--    1 root  admin      398 May 18 20:45 com.apple.familycontrols.timelimits.plist
    -rw-r--r--   1 root  admin     80 May 18 20:45 com.apple.familycontrols.logging.plist
    -rw-r--r--   1 root  admin    226 May 18 20:45 com.apple.iChatAgent.plist
    -rw-r--r--   1 root  admin     75 May 18 20:45 com.apple.mcxprinting.plist
    -rw-r--r--   1 root  admin     97 May 18 20:45 com.apple.systempreferences.plist
    -rw-r--r--   1 root  admin  11821 May 18 20:45 complete.plist
    e) Delete the file containing time limits config
    mac-3155:Managed Preferences root# rm com.apple.familycontrols.timelimits.plist
    f) Logout from Terminal
    g) Logout from your account
    h) Now my daughter was able to log back in and the 30 minutes Time Limit was Up and running working as expected, regardless how many times she tried to reboot the Mac...
I hope it helps to those out there.

  • Want to use parental controls to prevent myself from being able to be on certain websites, but i can't do so on my account because i'm the administrator and parental controls don't work with the administrator. How can i do this?

go on certain websites, but i can't use parental controls on my account because i'm the administrator. How do i prevent access to websites?

Thanks for the reply, BUT --- i can't fool myself. I can make all the other accounts i want, but i'll still be able to get into the admin account and therefore have access to the websites i don't want to have access to. Is there a way to block websites from ALL accounts?

  • Parental controls don't let my children make a user nor save on their user

I have the latest iMac i5 with the latest Snow Leopard update and my children are restricted by parental controls only by time and internet usage.
The problem that I have is that when playing games they cannot create a new user. Secondly, when I have created a user for them in an unrestricted they cannot save their game data on the user.
How do I get this to work while they are still restricted by time limits.

definitely. only an admin user can create a new user on the computer.
Secondly, when I have created a user for them in an unrestricted they cannot save their game data on the user.
do you mean you created a standard user for your children? and they can not save some game data when logged into that standard user? that would have nothing to do with parental controls and would likely be a problem with the game they are playing.
How do I get this to work while they are still restricted by time limits.

  • Dodge/burn brushes don't seem to do anything

    Hi all,
I'm sure I'm doing (or not doing) something wrong. When pull up the dodge or burn brushes, I get the "brush" (two concentric circles with a "+" sign in the center, right?), and I drag the brush over portions of my photo (I sometimes hold down the trackpad, too), but no matter what I try, nothing actually seems to change on the photo.
I'm an old film photographer, and I used to dodge and burn all the time in the darkroom, and I'd love to have this ability in Aperture. Surely I'm just doing something stupid. I've fiddled with the "strength" and other sliders, but I'm just not seeing any effects.
    Any ideas? Thank you!

Frank and Kirby's tips for checking the effect of the brushes are spot on. You should also check the Brush Range on the Brush HUD to make sure you're affecting ALL (if you're brushing over highlights and the range is set to shadows, you obviously won't see anything happening).
Here's a tip you can use once everything's working: don't forget Curves, especially for burning (which I find a little soft for my taste). You can create a Curve that boosts or drops much more precisely than the Dodge and Burn brushes. And Aperture 3's ability to create more than one instance of an adjustment means you can have as many Curves as you like, each targeting a specific zone in your image. This makes for much more powerful dodging and burning IMHO.
And for edges, applying the Vignette and then erasing some portions of it is also quite effective, depending on the effect you're looking to achieve.

  • On certain websites, controls don't seem to work. When I click "next" nothing happens.

On at least two different sites so far..when I encounter a control such as "Next" nothing happens when I click on that control. On one site, Newsday.com, which is a newspaper, they display some top stories and below the frame there are arrows, ">" and "<" to see the next story or previous. These do not work at all.
I noticed that the default setting for my extensions and add-ons has come Java programs disabled. Could this be the problem?

Although the names are similar, the Java add-ons are not used by Firefox to interpret and run JavaScript. Firefox handles JavaScript directly; you do not need Java for that. You just need to make sure JavaScript is enabled here:
orange Firefox button (or Tools menu) > Options > Content
When you have a problem with one particular site, a good "first thing to try" is clearing your Firefox cache and deleting your saved cookies for the site.
    (1) Bypass Firefox's Cache
Use Ctrl+Shift+r to reload the page fresh from the server.
Alternately, you also can clear Firefox's cache completely using:
orange Firefox button (or Tools menu) > Options > Advanced
On the Network mini-tab > Cached Web Content : "Clear Now"
If you have a large hard drive, this might take a few minutes.
    (2) Remove the site's cookies (save any pending work first). While viewing a page on the site:
    * right-click and choose View Page Info > Security > "View Cookies"
    * Alt+t (open the classic Tools menu) > Page Info > Security > "View Cookies"
Then try reloading the page. Does that help?
It's possible that one of your other add-ons could be interfering, although I don't know why it would. To test that theory, you can disable all your nonessential, unrecognized, or unwanted add-ons on the following pages:
orange Firefox button (or Tools menu) > Add-ons > Plugins category<br>
orange Firefox button (or Tools menu) > Add-ons > Extensions category
After restarting Firefox, do you notice any difference?

  • SoundFonts don't seem to do anyth

    Hi,
I downloaded a few soundfonts from http://www.personalcopy.com/home.htm and installed two of them. Then I played several MIDIs and didn't notice any difference. Then, just a minute ago, I tried to play the MIDI "AceOfSpy" that comes with the SB X-Fi Fatality board (it is in the 3D MIDI folder) and the song was all screwed up. I went in and deleted the installed SoundFonts from their banks and the MIDI was good as new again.
What am I missing here? I thought those custom sound fonts would make my MIDIs sound better. They didn't help at all.

    roger,
good to see you here online too
That may be true, but "max bitrate" and "quantization
floor" cannot give you any control over the final
file size. Only the "average bitrate" can do this.
while it is frustrating when you end up with an m2v that's too big for the disc it was supposed to fit onto, my clients tend to make a bigger fuss out of blockiness and other compression artifacts
and probably the ultimate encoding is a good balance between all 3 parameters - so far however encoders seem to fall into two categories, both emphasizing a different subset of these or a different combination of these.
which works for you may then also depend on your way of looking at the problem...
Divide the file size (in bits) by the duration (in
seconds), to get the average bitrate that your
encoder generated, as opposed to what you told it to
    do;-)
that's what failed for me with compressor - resulting in 5+GB discs for 1h50m of material, using the 120 minute per disc preset....
btw audio was ac3 at 192
This is why you can trust BitVice not to generate bigger files than you ask for.
still looking forward to that version 1.7 of bitvice later this week to finally see how it will do on a quad g5

  • Applications added in Finder & System Parental Controls don't show up

I am the admin of our computer, and have multiple Managed accounts for my kids. I have limited the applications available to them in the Finder & System. However, i recently tried to add applications to one of the accounts and they don't show up when i log back into my kids account. I have tried logging out of the Admin account when done. I've tried restarting. But they won't "stick"!? Any ideas?
    iMac G5   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

Thanks Barney, I tried that but all that comes up in Spotlight are the log files that show the file paths! I don't know how Steam works. Are all the files held by Steam on their server perhaps?

  • Backlight controls don't seem to control it?

When I receive calls, the backlight doesn't come on.  Even though it's set to in options.
When writing emails, no matter what I set the timeout to be, it times out (and backlight drops) in about 15 seconds.
    Help.
    Rlp

When you receive a call, the screen should light up and show you who's calling.  However, the keyboard/trackball may or may not depending on the amount of ambient light in the room.  You can test by placing your finger over the led at the top right of the device.

  • Internet Recovery Parental Controls

    Hi,
I've noticed that while using Safari in internet recovery mode, some pages are blocked by parental controls, but the parental controls don't seem to follow the controls set up in the admin account.  Anybody have any ideas of where those settings are set?  Is there a way to change them?
    Any help is appreciated!

Open firmware password may be the way to do it.   Mind you, a clever enough person can bypass that, but it takes more effort than it usually is worth.  Put a hidden camera in the room if you are worried something will happen, and backup the data only when you are present.  And if you forget the open firmware password, you may have locked yourself out for good anyway.

  • Parental Controls not working in Mavericks

Browsed related posts & didn’t find an answer.
“Kids” iMac is a 24” mid 2007. Was running Snow Leopard with Parental Controls enabled and working 100% for 3 years.
I never disturbed it because it was working fine for them.
Recently had to upgrade it to Mavericks to run TurboTax (my wife’s account is also on that machine).
Now the Parental Controls don’t work. Timer doesn’t work & all logs are blank. When asking for website permission, it never remembers after I allow it.
I am really frustrated with this.
My iMac is a 24” 2009, also running Mavericks. I made a dummy managed account, and it functions properly.
I’ve gone through the usual steps: turned Parental Controls off/on, restarted, repaired permissions, etc.
I did make a dummy account on the kids’ machine as well, and it worked one time, but just the one time.
Is there a fix, or an update or anything?
    Thanks in advance

I upgraded my Mac Pro from Mavericks to Yosemite and am having lots of problems with the Parental Controls settings with Yosemite.  By far, it was been the worst Parental Controls experience I have ever had.
I have had to turn off the time limit hours for my kids accounts, as that just aggravates the time limiting features on the OS.
The general time limits for say 1.5 hours a day seem to work, except when I try to extend the time.  When I extend the time, the OS seems to accept the modification, but as soon as the account is up and running, it logs them out immediately, and I have to do it again.
I also had to grant access to run all applications on the machine, as I couldn't just grant access to say the Arduino IDE, and have all of it's sub programs be granted automatically.  When I dump the settings in XML format, it seems like those sub programs are on the Ok list, but the OS keeps putting up alerts if I want to allow access or not, and it's just too painful to actually use anymore.
It would be nice to get some comments from Apple that they are aware of the issues people are running into, and they are trying to fix them.  Everyday there's some other quirk we're running into where I need to turn off some setting I used to have on for my kids.

  • Parental Controls - Logs of Websites Visited Empty.

Recently gave my old Black MacBook to my 10 year old son.
Set up parental controls and all seems to be fine, except the Logs of websites viewed is empty.
Doesn't matter if I look at them on his MacBook or remotely on my MBP. How can I fix this? Any advice please? He's getting to an age where curiousity is taking him to some darker corners of the internet I'd rather he'd didn't see yet. Mostly these sites are auto-blocked but there are some I'd like to know he's visited so I can block them manually.
    Thanks.

I've never cared for Apple's implementation of Parental Controls and recommend a full feature program like K9 Parental Controls for Mac. It's free for home use. Just don't forget your Admin password. It's required for uninstallation.
