Parent templates

G'day
My parent templates are not loading up and therefore not
accessed through contribute CS3. This is stopping me from creating
new pages using the templates. The templates files are .dwt files.
In addition when I want to repeat an editable region and I click on
the icon I get a message saying : "You can't add items to repeating
regions because the draft's parent template is missing or not
available to users in your role. Please contact the website
administrator................... which is me, for assistance. In
the administrator preference section I have clicked the box 'Use
dreamweaver templates' and nothing appears in the show/hide
template box either. In the allow users section I can locate the
templates folder but it is empty. I'm wondering whether I need to
go back into Dreamweaver and recreate the templates- what a pain!
Any suggestions on why and how to remedy?
Thanks in advance
Thanks in advance

Hi,
Please do the following:
1. Create a folder named 'Templates' inside your site folder
on server.
2. Copy your templates(.dwt) in that folder.
3. Launch Contribute.
4. Click on File->New. Templates will be available in New
page dialog.
-->If you can't see templates in "New web page or blog
entry" dialog, Select your site in "New web page or blog entry"
dialog and Click on Refresh templates->For selected
website/blog.
Hope this helps.
Thanks,

  • How to remove Editable region from nested template?

I'm trying to remove an editable region from a nested
template while retaining it in the parent template. DW doesn't want
    to let me do this.
    Example:
    - I've created an overall template call ALLPAGES.DWT
    - In it, there's an editable region called "related links".
    - The "related links" will stay the same for all my main
pages (welcome, news, info, etc), so I'd like to create a nested
template called MAINPAGES.DWT where the field is locked.
    So here's what I did; I started a new page from ALLPAGES.DWT
and then I created a template MAINPAGES.DWT from it. Now I want to
remove the editable region "related links". According to the DW
manual, I should be able to highlight the region and go to
Modify > Templates > Remove Template Markup, but that
    option is greyed out!
Apparenlty the only way of removing the editable region is to
create a smaller editable region within it. But that's unnecessary
and sloppy. How can I remove the region entirely?

    I really disagree with this.

I spent quite a bit of time using them, tweaking them,
    understanding them,
and watching the problems that others have had here on the
    forum. My
compelling conclusion is that there is nothing you can do
    with nested
templates that you cannot do more simply and with far less
    trouble by using
other methods, some involving other kinds of template
    regions, and some
involving simple use of Library items, or better, server-side
    includes.

This is not only unkind, it's completely erroneous. Far and
    away, I am the
single most enthusiastic proponent for the use of templates
    on these boards.
Perhaps a read of my book would help you rid yourself of your

  • Document-relative Template paths in templated files?

Is it possible to make Dreamweaver use document-relative
paths to parent Templates rather than root-relative? My site
definition is setup so such that the local folder is the root of
the web site. However, on the server the site is actually in a sub
folder, so the real web root is not the same as this web sites
    root. So, something like this:
    Local root folder = C:\...\Project Name\www2\
    (Local templates folder = C:\...\Project
    Name\www2\Templates\)
    HTTP Address =
    http://www.mysite.com/clients/client-site/
    (Remote templates folder =
    http://www.mysite.com/clients/client-site/Templates/)
The end user will be using Contribute to manage the content
on this site, so I'm using Templates to control some aspects of the
site. My problen is that the path back to the Template is being
    written as a root-relative link:
    InstanceBegin template="/Templates/navigation-sub.dwt.php"
When I then connect to the site using Contribute and try to
edit a page, I get an error saying that it can't find the template
(which is true because the template is actually in
    "/clients/client-site/Templates/navigation-sub.dwt.php" and not
"/Templates/navigation-sub.dwt.php"). I have the Links Relative to
Document option checked in my site definition, but that appears to
only apply to regular links and not paths to Template files.
Murray had mentioned some technotes that addressed this, and
I think I found the ones he was thinking of, but they seemed to
only address regular links and it wasn't clear if the Template
paths were affected by the solution (which was to set the Links
Relative to Document option which I mentioned above).
So is it possible to tell DW to use document relative paths
to its template files? I know you're thinking "Why not just create
the local folder with the client and client-name folders," but this
wouldn't work as the site will eventually be moved to the clients
own website where the site files really will be in the site root.
This is the whole reason for using document relative files in the
first place. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

OK, apparently I'm not explaining myself enough here because
you guys keep giving me the same answer to something that I've
already said isn't a viable solution. Let me explain in greater
detail why just updating the local folder structure won't work.
Let's assume that I did do what you suggest. My local folder
could technically stay the same but I'd add two additional
directory levels ('clients' and 'client-site') to match the site
structure on my testing server. I then move all of the existing
files into the lower 'client-site' directory *except* for the
Templates folder because DW likes that to be at the "root" of the
"site". So now assume my local site looks something like this:
C:\...\Project Name\www2\ (DW would consider this the "root"
    of the site)
    .....clients\
..........client-site\ (i'll refer to this as the client root
    for simplicity sake)
    ...............articles\
    ....................doc_a.html
    ...............images\
    ....................img_a.jpg
    ...............index.html
    .....Templates\
    ..........client-template.dwt
If DW is writing the Paths back to the Template file using
site-relative paths then file index.html in the client root (i.e.
/clients/client-site/) would have the path back to template
    client-template.dwt written as follows:
    InstanceBegin template="/Templates/client-template.dwt"
Also assume that img_a.jpg is the client logo that will be
used on all of the pages and so it is in a protected part of the
template. The document-relative path from the template
client-template.dwt to the image would be:
    <img src="../clients/client-site/images/img_a.jpg">
Of course since my site is defined to use document-relative
links then this path would resolve to just "../images/img_a.jpg"
    for index.html.
OK, so far so good. I upload all of this to my testing
server, give my client a connection key for Contribute and let them
test away. They love it (naturally) and want to move everything to
production. This is where your suggested solution falls apart.
In order for the site to continue to work as-is I would have
to copy the entire directory tree (/client/client-site/etc) to the
clients web site, so what should be www.client-site.com/index.html
    becomes www.client-site.com/clients/client-name/index.html. I also
have to copy over the Templates folder, stripping out any other
Templates that might be in there (my own site template for
example). Not only is this cumbersome, but the client hates the
fact that there are all these subdirectories in their URL (as
finicky as clients are) and they think it is unprofessional. My
whole purpose for developing using document relative links is so
that no matter where I plop the site, it will work as intended.
OK, the first fox for this that comes to mind is to take just
the site files (so everything under /clients/client-name/) and plop
that into the root folder on production. All of the existing files
should work fine since they use document-specific links. However,
the client still needs to use Contribute to edit these documents so
I have to copy over the Template folder. I can put that into the
root since all of the paths back to the template are root-relative,
right? Wrong - because all of the links in the template still point
to the files as if they were in '/clients/client-name/', which they
no longer are. So any new files based on the template will contain
broken links, and any updates to the existing files might also
    result in broken links.
So then I need to keep two versions of the site? And if I
make a change to the template on the testing site, I then have to
reconcile the changes to the production version? Way too much. And
all of this would be irrelevant if I could just use
document-specific links back to my templates.
Does it make sense now why updating the site structure isn't
as optimal of a solution as you are making it out to be.

  • Identifying Files Based on a Template

    Hi guys,
Would anyone know how to search for or generate a report to
show which files have been created based on given template.
When you save changes to the template, you get a list of
those files that can be updated with that change, but the list
isn't copyable and disappears as soon as you click on OK.
    Maybe I'm missing something obvious!

do a find in source sitewide for that_filename.dwt
the first comment in the child pages has the path to it's
    parent template.

  • Template not updating meta tag info.

I use DW MX on PC w/XP Home OS -- in the event that this info

    do most SE's locate sites/info?
By using links from other sites, or domains that have been
    submitted to

    weeks at most.

    brain...
Here are seven common mistakes that will result in changes
    not propagating
    from Template to child -
    1. Rename the Templates folder
    2. Move the Templates folder to some other folder level in
    the site other
    than root level
    3. Move a template out of the Templates folder.
    4. Make changes to an editable region of the template (which
    will not
    propagate)
    5. Assume that template changes can be uploaded to the server
    without also
    uploading the changed local files
    6. Corrupt the site cache so that the link between template
    and child page
    is broken
7, Improperly create your child pages by simply opening the
    template,
adding page specific content, and resaving the template with
    an *.html
extension rather that its *.dwt extension. (you can tell if
    this is the case
by looking at the code on a child page - if you see anything
    like <!--
TemplateBeginEditable... then this is what you have done)
The 6th problem can be repaired by using SITE | Advanced >
    Recreate Site
Cache, and the six others can be fixed by just not doing
    them. Have you
    done any of those?

  • Unable to set template properties

I have a site which is based off of a responsive design (HTML5/CSS3/jQuery). I've setup a nice template for our Contribute users however I get the "Unable to set template properties" error when I would try to enter the template properties. Additionally, repeating regions don't work at all. No error, nothing. They work great with Dreamweaver, but not Contribute.
I previously had this issue with an older (non-responsive) site which was based off of a Dreamweaver CS5.5 built in template. However with that site, I would get the following error when trying to work with a repeating region, "You can't add items to repeating regions because the draft's parent template is missing or not available to users in your role. Please contact the website administrator." I was able to fix this with the following Contribute 6.5 settings.
Users can ONLY be able to create new pages from copies of select pages. I just made blank versions of the templates I wanted people to use, and just saved them in the /Templates directory.
Be sure creating new pages from site templates is turned OFF.
Be sure creating new pages from content types is turned OFF.
This is not the case with the newer site. I've tried both transitional and compatibility modes in the Contribute site settings but still nothing.
Anyone experiencing this or have any fix ideas?

    Update:
Looks like I'm going to have to settle on not using nested templates. I gave it a try with on a page from a single un-nested template and both template properties and repeating regions worked.
So now I'll be including all the global code via PHP includes rather than a master Dreamweaver template. Not sure how that will effect broken link reports or global link updates but it looks like it's the only solution for now.

  • Pages and Child Templates Not Updating

I'm having a problem in Dreamweaver CS5 where pages and child templates are not receiving updates made to the parent template. When I update the template, sometimes some files using that template will update, and some will not. Repeatedly updating the template sometimes forces the changes, but other times it does not.
For instance I was working on a 50 page site earlier, made up of 1 master template with 5 child templates. I made changes to the master template, and it went through the update process, saying all the child templates and files have been updated. However when I open some, not all, files, they are not updated.
I manually went through the entire site and hit 'update page from template', and that seemed to work. I opened a different site with only 1 template, did an update, and it only updated some of the files. I updated the template again, saved, and it then proceeded to update a few more randomly selected files.
This was happening sometimes in CS4, but in CS5 it has become a bigger problem. Please let me know how this can be resolved.
Edit: This is on a freshly reinstalled CS5 with all updates.

Sure. It's Dreamweaver MX Templates by Brad Halstead and myself - ISBN 0-7357-1319-7.  I spend quite a bit of time explaining nested templates.  Sadly, nowhere do I say you should avoid them.  But you should.
There is a master template that controls top level navigation and then five child templates that give different left-side navigation based on which section of the site the user is in. You can see this in action at www.homerenergy.com.
You should see how easy this is to do with server-side includes and a single template file.  It's the best of both worlds.
You can see this in action at www.homerenergy.com.
Yep.  http://validator.w3.org/unicorn/check?ucn_uri=http://www.homerenergy.com/&ucn_task=conform ance - even if you would leave the nested templates in place, you would sure want to fix those.
The section-specific navigation is very easy to manage either with template conditionals or with server-side includes.  You can see this site - http://www.ent-sys.com - where I have done the section navigation on interior pages with template conditionals.
However, your site is small, and simple.  Nested templates can work OK in such circumstances.  But I have never seen a use of nested templates that couldn't be done more simply with some other approach.

  • Where is the template for a dynamic VI?

Whenever I create a dynamic VI in a class, the block diagram comes up with a spacing of 12, even though I have it set differently in the Options. This is terribly annoying. I can fix it manually for each VI, but I'd like to just fix it once and be done with it. I expect these are created based on a .vit somewhere, but I can't seem to find it. Does anyone know where the parent template is?

    hi there
i searched for all *.vit (Tools -> Find VIs on disk). i think
    ...\LabVIEW 8.2\resource\Framework\Providers\LVClassLibrary\CLSUIP_MemberTemplate.vit
is what you are looking for.

When I open a self created template page (all regions editable) I lose the background image from body. Everything else loads fine.
First time I'm trying the template option.

I made a change to the root folder today when I noticed DK2011 was caps and possibly not prooper protocol so I created a new folder which was captured in previous post now known as dksite.
Here is another pic with my root folder and you can see templates and images open with the background image showing which is the_voice_mansiongood.jpg.
The background image comes up in the dkmainpage tempate but does not show in a new page created from the parent template.
Here's the code from dkmainpage template (parent) below.
I fear I'm making things insanely confusing.

  • Importing a Template

I am trying to import a template without hardcodoing the physical path.
Parent template lives where usual report files are, for example:
    http://localhost:9704/xmlpserver/development/Reports/Test/Test.xdo
If I point the URL to the Template thats in this location I get the following error.
"Resource /xmlpserver/development/Reports/Test/Detail.rtf not found on this server"
I am able to access this template if I put it in a webserver and access like this.
http://localhost/jedi/test/Detail.rtf and it asking for download.
I am trying to put this Detail template in the same location where all the report files are and want to import it without hardcoding the toal path for obvious reasons.
I tried to use <?$CURRENT_SERVER_URL?> but its not finding the template even if I access directly with this url.
    http://localhost:9704/xmlpserver/development/Reports/Test/Test.xdo
and getting this error as I mentioned.
"Resource /xmlpserver/development/Reports/Test/Detail.rtf not found on this server"
There are 2 ways I could import the template,
    1. by hardcoding the path liek this
    <?import:file:///C:\oracle\BIP\xmlp\XMLP\Users\development\Reports\Test\Detail.rtf?>
    2. or by accessing it from webserver applicaiton like this
    <?import: http://localhost/jedi/test/CommodityDetail.rtf?>
Disadvantage over the second step is - I need to put the report files in some other location.
I want to import the template from the usual report location without hardcoding the path.
I am sure this is one of the common requirements.
Could anyone throw some light on this please?

    HI
Could you please send me the example "how to import the sub template" ?

  • AEM CQ5.6 - page properties editing functionality depending on templates

    Hello everyone,
I want to provide a view (UI touched) to the editor/user different page properties depending on the template within CQ 5.6. Let's say I have three templates which have a bunch of common page properties. Additionally they have some different properties. In the end the user should see (with UI touched overlay) different page properties depending on different templates. This is regarding to the page which already exist and also when the user want to create a page based on a special template.
What I have done so far:
    1) For existing pages.
For exsiting pages I have overloaded and addapted /libs/cq/gui/components/siteadmin/admin/childpage/childpage.jsp
Additionally I have overloaded /libs/wcm/core/content/sites/bulkproperties/items/content/items/tabs/items depending on my template.
    2) No solution found for creating of new pages
Is there a way to solve this issue in easy way? I guess the overloading "solution" on the UI touch is a way to excessive.
If there is a way to solve it, please provide how to do it.
    Thanks in advance
    Vladimir
To make it more clear I made a screenshot of what I want to do. Please note there is no need to touch the /libs.

For the template to have a custom page properties in addition to the fields that belong to template that it inherits, a dialog has to be defined in template implementation and the required (new) fields should be defined in there. By doing so, the page properties will show the fields that are in parent template + that in the current custom template in question.

  • Unable to insert .flv Template Child Pages

Unable to insert .flv Flash video in template pages
When you attempt to insert a Flash Video file (.flv) into a
child page created from a Dreamweaver template, you see the
following error message: "Making this change would require changing
code that is locked by a template or a translator. The change will
    be discarded."
The Adobe recommended solution: “ 1. Make a parent
template page that already contains the Flash Player detection
code. 2. Insert the Flash Video into the child page created from
the template, without the Flash Player detection code. To do this,
uncheck the "Prompt users to download Flash Player if necessary"
checkbox in the Insert Flash Video dialog box.”
This solution does not work. It doesn’t work because
the checkbox is grayed out - it is impossible to “…
uncheck the "Prompt users to download Flash Player … checkbox
    What Can I do?
I want to uncheck that grayed out “Prompt” box.
    How can I do that?

I am unable to duplicate what you are describing.
When you go to insert the flv, you Insert/Media/Flash
    Video... and the box
    is grayed out?
The unchecking of the box solves the problem, why yours is
    doing that I dont
understand. I assume you are in an editable region in the
    child?

  • Acrobat 9 Pro and changes to Normal style in Word

I am using Acrobat 9 Pro with Microsoft Word 2007 on a Windows XP system. On PDFing a workbook recently, I noticed that after successfully creating the PDF several of the styles in my original document had changed from Arial to Times New Roman. Further investigation showed that the Normal style had been changed and this had rippled through the document.
I corrected the font and re-saved, closed and opened the document but when I ran Acrobat again it once more changed Normal to Times New Roman: this seemed to occur after the distillation was complete as the fonts were correct in the PDF.
Further investigation seems to suggest that the issue is something to do with no master template being applied to the document. The connection to the parent had become broken due to moving the document. On applying a parent template, the issue seemed to go away and the font did not change after running Acrobat.
Can anyone tell me if this is a known behavior of Acrobat or was it simply a result of sloppy document management (it's OK, I won't take it personally). I did a quick search on the site and saw nothing similar.
    Charles Addison

Thanks for the reply. I would agree about 2007; however, I'm fairly sure it is to do with the template that is currently attached to the document. I suspect that because no template was stipulated, it reattached to the Normal.dotm when acrobat was finished PDFing. Since stipulating the template to be used I have had no further problems.
I just love Office and it's "quirky" ways.

  • Force InDesign to default .indd file name to match .indt name

    Hi
I work for a photography company that uses dozens of InDesign .indt templates to create customised .indd documents and then PDFs for printing. Employees access the templates from a local server, and then save the .indd file with a specific name in another location. So far, so normal.
Now, it's critical that the .indd file be named correctly in order for our printing software to recognise it. At the moment the default file name for a given .indd in the 'save as' dialogue will be something like 'Untitled-36.indd', which we have to very carefully change to the appropriate name for the rip to read it.
The .indt files already have the appropriate name, so is there a way to force InDesign to save the .indd with the same name as its parent template by default, rather than 'Untitled-XX.indd' like it does now? It might seem trivial, but it would actually save us a lot of time, not to mention the print errors, if this were possible.
We're running CS6 on Windows 7 machines, and accessing the templates and saving documents to a Linux server.
    Thanks!
    Ryan.

You cannot change the behavior for naming when saving from templates.
There is no structural difference between a .indt file and a .indd. the different extension simply triggers a default opening method: .indd opens as original and for safety (so you don't accidentally overwrite them with content) .indt files open by default as untitled copies. IF and it's a big IF, your people can be counted on to never hit Save (only Save AS), and always to navigate to new folders to save the documents, then saving the templates as .indd (and you can just change the extension on existing ones) would preserve the names. Marking these "templates" as read-only should add a layer of safety.
